Gotta say the quality of this broadcast is incredible given it's almost 50 years old now. And how good is Brian Moore and Jimmy Hill's commentary, grew up with these guys in Australia. Big Dick Malone defending like his life depended on it 😂🤣..
I was 9. Watching in Dublin. Never forget that day, it was blood and guts all the way. The image of Bob Stokoe running down to hug Jim Montgomery after the final whistle is burned on my memory. Brian Moore's great commentary added to the occasion.
My Grandad is from Galway and I watched the final with him. I was only 5yrs old but I can still remember the joy and the scenes. Ya see the lad who ran on the pitch at the end with the flag around him ? That was my uncle, my Grandad son.
I am a Leeds supporter born and bred, even i have to say one of the best finals ever. Was there that day as a young sixteen-year-old. We met three Sunderland fans after and have been friends ever since. So to Brian Alan and Andy ....Cheers.
this 70s footy...absolutely shi**s all over todays limp wristed effort! .......having lived thru late 60s footy till present day..I can categorically say..... 65 -88 is perhaps the greatest era...... less money in it.... more pride passion and loyalty from fans and players alike, and hardly any over paid foreign players!!!!!! ....... the FA Cup final was THE game of the year........ never be anything like it ever again !
What memories, Dave Watson like a rock, Bobby Kerr like a mad Duracell bunny, Ian Porterfield with the only goal of the match, and Jimmy Montgomery, with that epic double save, another thing that's over looked about this final, there were a lot of Scotsmen on the pitch that day
I can still remember BBC1 Scotland, who were showing the Old Firm final, saying during commentary something along the lines of "We don't want to spoil it, but if you think this final has everything, wait for the highlights from Wembley after this, where something extraordinary is happening! " That didn't give the game away much!
Hundreds of times better than the Banks save they keep raving about, That save won the FA cup given the power of the two shots, it is the greatest save ever, and I am from Newcastle
Totally disagree with the original comment about Jimmy's classic saves being "overlooked' I don't think they've ever been overlooked and people when talking about this match remember Ian's goal, Jimmy's saves and Bob Stokoe at the final whistle running arms out to Montgomery.

I'm not lying or exaggerating look at the records if anything it was more than a million from Durham all the way to Roker Park it was unbelievable
Yes, he was at ITV from 1968 to just after this final, when he moved to the BBC to present Match of the Day. Jimmy went on to suggest 3 points for a win, rather than 2, and this was taken up in 1981 in England, but it was another 10 years before other countries did. Indeed, it wasn't 3 points for a win in the World Cup until the 1994 tournament.

With the tackle on Bremner in the box, now the commentators would say "That looks like a penalty" but Moore is straight in there with "No penalty!"

beautiful times for me as a mackem kid
That tackle just after 2.00 mins and not even a yellow card. These days would have red with a 12 match ban!!!

Not really. It's been hailed as one of the finest pieces of goalkeeping quite often.
Timeless
That tackle by Richie Pitt though. Have it lad!! He’d get 6 months inside for that now!!

You've seen the moment a hundred times. You know the result. Yet on every watch you can't see Lorimer not scoring. An amazing save by Montgomery.
great support from Sunderland, The leeds end looks strange the whole middle section has no colour
Remember this match on TV when I was Ten
Clark gets mullered by the centre half , free kick. No cards , no big girls blouse nonsense, just gets on with it
it was a real man's game then........not the over payed, over rated, big girl's blouse's today.
All you'll hear are Sunderland fans we took London as well as Wembley over that day
Anything showing Leeds getting beaten is welcome on UA-cam .
Someone has issues ....
11 years on and a goal like the one at the end was given…I wonder if the same ref would’ve disallowed it
