***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.
I'm so glad that It looks like it won't be causing you problems more than today, We all hope and pray
Watching this from Thailand in 32c temperature it gives me the shivers. It takes me back to when I lived in England in the 1940. We had no electricity and our lead pipes used to freeze up. I used to make small paraffin lamps out of shoe polish tins and leave them in our outside lavatory to stop the pipes freezing. It was something else to worry about other than bombs falling on us. But the snow and clear skies look beautiful where you are. Take care.
One of the things I like most about your channel is your relationship. You both seem to love each other and work together for a better life. Both pitching in to get the job done. No gender driven agendas, no his job or her job. Just working hard to keep things running smooth, as most farm families do. Well done.
Yep, they are amazing. God was really showing off when he made them.😊❤
I completely agree!
Totally in agreement! 🤩
When I was very young in the 1950's my father had a model A car, we didn't have a garage. In winter he put a couple of sacks over the motor at night to keep it a bit warmer. It always started, if you forget to remove the sacks before starting it they will catch fire along the road as the engine gets hot. Good old days ☺️🌻
Ok. Tips from Alaska.
1. Buy a plug in battery blanket for your batteries for tractors and vehicles. Just plug them in when you know a cold fronts coming. Especially at night.
2. You can also get a magnetic heating pad for your oil pan to plug in when it's cold.
3. Build a fire outside, or use propane stove to melt clean snow while you're doing other chores to have warm water for milk cow cleaning.
By the time you move your hay, feed, your water will be ready.
4. You can also install block heater plugs in the freeze plug holes on your engine block that keep your block warm.
5. If you install those, battery blanket, oil pan pad, block plugs, you zip tie all the cords together, then plug them into a 3 way plug.
You position the male end through your grill and then plug your extension cord into that.
Those heaters aren't expensive and easily installed except the freeze plug heater.
You guys are doing great!
I really enjoy your videos.
When you know a cild snap is coming, it pays to keep a heater, heat lamps and beefed up insulation in your pump house.
And keep your water trickling in the faucet farthest from your water shut off to your house.
When you know a hard freeze is coming, take up 20 gallons water ahead of time.
God is good ALL the time! I love to watch his work in our lives! He placed a hedge of protection over you.
To farmers and homesteaders everywhere....thank you!
As a well driller, pump installer, and master plumber, a regular hair dryer on the pressure switch and small connection fittings will thaw out fast. Often that is where your pipe is frozen.
build a fire ring and add a pot and boil water for birds.
Great idea! ❤
Running water is such a blessing…
I moved from Las Vegas to Couch Mo (about 100 miles from you) and was afraid of my well house freezing. I bought a small atomic wall clock from Walmart and put the outside thermometer in my wellhouse. The one I bought has an alarm that can be set for minimum and maximum temp. The alarm has only gone off one time and I just went out and replaced my heat lamp bulb. Not expensive and gives me a lot of peace of mind in the winter.
One thing I like about this channel is mistakes happen and they don’t try to hide them so others can learn from their mistakes.
We’ve all been there
We wrap our pressure tank with an electric blanket and then another old blanket around that in our pump house. The electric blanket has such little draw that it’s more economical than a heater.
Good idea👌
The main thing I love about your channel in comparison with some others. Is that you show things like this, mistakes, mishaps, and all around reality on the farm (homestead). Sometimes everyone wakes up to a ticked off rooster, cranky hens, the tractor not starting, 12 more inches of snow, and last but not least ... plow man hitting the mail box again! Thats life on the Homestead. It makes us feel not alone. Thank you for being refreshing and showing the realities of homesteading. You both are a Blessing.
Oh my, last year we replaced the entire mailbox structure. We made the main post 1' taller and added so many more reflecters that it lights up like a street light on a country road. The plow truck hasn't hit it yet.
Fingers crossed, lol.
Kevin & Sarah are part of God's Blessings to us... very grateful! ☮️💞✝️
Right! Unlike some other "homesteading" channels, that try to make it appear as a simple, glamorous lifestyle that anybody can just jump right into. Especially folks that have never left the city or picked up a tool. I sometimes wonder how many people have lost their livelihood or lives due to that misrepresentation.
When things don’t go as planned, when they do get back to normal I have noticed how much more grateful I am for it.
Glad to see everything worked out for you two.
We have a spring house. Our spring. Thank you, Jesus!, has brought water to our house since the early 1920s and produces some of the finest water in our county. We keep a reptile "bulb" that is ceramic and produces no light in there year round and also have 2 heat 250 watt heat lamps on all winter. The water is a steady temp in the 50º range year round. I consider the lamps consumable and always have spares on hand. The good Lord has kept us watered abundantly and we are most thankful. Keep those lamps on, Kevin. The few pennies it costs in electric is well worth the cost. God bless.
So thankful your water is thawed!! Has been a crazy winter to say the least. God bless
You are having weather that we have here in Northern Minnesota. -11 this past week -30 with wind chill. I am very grateful for my garage. Many Blessings
People like you keep the country running. Thank you and Jesus bless
I think they keep themselves going and their family, but I don't think they keep the country running
WOW wondered how those big bales got inside of there.
Have you heard of heat tape ,produces heat to keep pipes from freezing. We had them on pipes on a trailer house in Michigan.
@@Dianatorres6990 You're not supposed to use generalized, from Box store, heat tape on underground/buried for water pipes. That could be their problem. I mean but anyway....
Yes! That's another thing we city folk didn't know. @@PeggyMeeter
Most diesels have a "glow plug" So that you warm up the plugs prior to starting. Sometimes you turn the key backwards. If that is the case on your tractor, you need to apply the glow plug for about 10 to 20 seconds depending on the temp prior to starting. Hope that helps.
Working through problems brings wisdom.
I live in S W Missouri and we have had our water dripping in the bathtub since Sunday. We have lived on our farm about 43 years and know when the temperature drops so low to catch water. We have about 10 gallons of fresh water for cooking and coffee. And we let the water drip into the bathtub for animals and flushing the toilet. We still have water dripping because it is 6 degrees outside this morning. We have an electric heater in the well house and we still have water, but we also know what it is like to have to get water from the spring. It has been miserable cold here all week.
@@1LittleMama59Very smart... blessings! ☮️💞✝️
Sometimes I really don't want to be smarter!
Looking around my house with buckets of water for this afternoons watering!
We spoke with you at last year's Ozark Homesteading Expo about how much we enjoy that you share the trials and tribulations...not just candy-coating the realities. And here you are again...thank you. We have learned so much. This is your gift. 🌟
Similar weather here in the KC area. Crazy, but only the strong survive. 🙃
Kevin, get a block warmer for your tractor.
When it's very cold, you plug it in and the
warmer keeps the block of the engine warm
so that it is easier to start.
Semi trucks typically have them.
I love the way that Kevin and Sarah talk to the animals all the time like they were children...
My grandpa called that talking to your food… 😆
I’ve had a whole “conversation” with my cats…me in English, them in chitter 😹 & I believe they understand us

@ellied1701 You can learn to speak "fluent cat" 😂 and the kitty will answer! Try it... 🤔🤗🙃

Hallelujah, the water worked!
I like seeing how cooperative your cattle are. They seem to be living comfortable, no-stress lives.
Makes for better tasting meat
Happy cows / happy farm... 👌💞🤗
Maybe off camera they do like the Japanese, and give the cows massages while playing soft music.
Montana here we just went through -23 with windchill of -32. We are having a heat wave up to 21 above right now. We went around preparing. Heat tapes, insulation, laundry done, car batteries charged, water saved up, wood saved up. We survived. Good luck.
Awesome video!
Stay warm, God bless you and yours and your homestead❤🙏🏼
Back in the 90s, we had a stretch of -22F temps for two weeks. I had an older car with a carburetor, and it would not start when it was that cold. I solved the problem by putting a heating pad in the engine compartment overnight. Most people around here have engine block heater for their diesel tractors. Some tractors come pre-equipped, but you can purchase an engine block heater for around $100.00.
I lived for four years without running water. Every couple of days I would go to my sister’s house and fill up water jugs. I heated water on my stove for bathing and dishwashing. I had a rain barrel, and used that water for bucket flushing the toilet. Fortunately, I was able to do laundry at my sister’s house. I was so thrilled when I was finally able to have a new well drilled! The cool thing is, I have a flowing well that produces five gallons per minute without pumping. Now when the power goes out, people come to my house for water!
Thank you for sharing your homestead journey.💜🩵
Wow so sorry for your troubles. Glad things worked out. Y'all are amazing
Its been COLD here quite some time. Dads bathroom the cold line burst! So he fills a bucket in tub so he can put in reservoir. Rest of house is ok. He went to town for a part. Its a sunny 8° at noon. We have had many days at or below zero! School was closed over a week.
Dad grew up at Ava & weather used to be like u r having often! He handmilked his cows, grampa used a machine.
I used a heat plate for my waterers & a single light bulb that seemed to keep everyone safe. In older days i lost some smaller livestock (young goats).
We had a salamander to heat things up (our place in IN froze often at 1st
Blessings
Chickens regulate body temperature through their feet and that is why they don't like walking on the snow
So much fun problem solving. Nice it all worked out. Love your program
In the Fraser Valley, where our farm is, the wind chill is often -35 for days. Taking a cue from your duckling watering box, we cut two squares (1 on each side and about 5" from the top) out of a large Rubbermaid tote. Insert 1 tank de-icer, thread the cord through one of the squares, fill with water just below the cutout, secure the lid with bricks (high winds are also an issue), and plug in the deicer. The openings are large enough for our Muscovies to put their heads in, drink and blow out their beaks but not big enough for them to take a bath and freeze to death!
My grandmother always used to teach us that the good Lord cant always come to help but he will provide for you. I think you have his blessing for all you do for others he will never leave you.God Bless keep safe and warm.💖💖
The Lord always provides...
giving His blessings to His faithful! ☮️💞✝️
Kevin & Sarah buy a Utility heater! We're in Missouri and have PVC pipes and it keeps the pipes from freezing. We also have a bulb we use in the well house.
I love you guys so much. Every body is so well cared for. Wow, they laid eggs even in that cold! Stay warm 💞💞Laughing at Cletus’s protesting on the way! 😂😂
You're so welcome. I have been learning from you both for quite some years. I have a suburban home with a smaller garden, but thanks to you, I was able to produce some very useful food during and after COVID-19. I now have a greenhouse. We've canned tomatoes, gratis to Sarah - not all grown by me. I canned meals, cooked dried beans, made bread and cheese, and the list goes on. I also have a beautiful flower garden. I was sorry after I watched your last video. I would love to give you a weekend away, but I am 73, and I feel I am past it. I was raised on an apple orchard and small farm in Dover, Tasmania, Australia. What would you like to discuss?
With the water problem it did make a very interesting video! Thanks for sharing the good and the bad!
The most important thing about today was feeding and watering the animals...! So glad ALL worked out well..! You got to milk Babe and take care of the extra calf...! Life on a farm...! There is NEVER a DULL MOMENT...! You both take such good care of your animals..! ❤🐭🐮 ❤ God Bless... Shelly
I am so ready for your spring videos with all the plants and garden. I cannot wait for the harvests as well!
If we don't encounter lessons learned we never evolve. Glad things worked out.
Those magnetic oil pan heaters (versus the engine block heaters only keeping the radiatior fluid warm) work the best for gas and diesels in keeping the oil in the oil pan warm, as the crankshaft hits the cold thick oil, stopping full engine movement. Any excess heat from the oil pan, then moves upward into the engine block and radiator fluid. So this also helps stopping engine bearings over-wear from the cold oil, but also quickly lubricates the cold engine and piston rings - also saving hard winter use and excessive engine wear. As the oil pan heats up, so the engine block, but the whole engine compartment also keeps the batteries at reasonable temperature and hard cranking amps - also saving batteries at this hard time of the year.
So happy you got water now.
Yes we had frozen pipes also. And it was at the pump also. So glad that nothing burst. We live north of you in Buffalo Missouri. Praise the lord we got it thawed out in a day and a half. Those negative temperature really does you in fast. We haven't had frozen pipes for 30 years.
You have such a well thought out immaculate beautiful homestead there are several that come close for 2 people with no prior experience you’ve done a great job
My better half is an injured vet. In the military they had a term "embrace the suck" and he said it often works well in our homesteading life too.
Since the week of 20 inches of snow, single digits, and high winds...my chickens have not free-ranged. They refuse to leave the coop/run area.😮we expect a heatwave this coming week mid 30's. I'm so glad 😊 for them to have higher temperatures.
Oh blessings! God is good! I’m in the cold in MA too so I certainly understand a little bit. You’re so right! GOD is with you!
Fortunately, you have discernment, and could hear where The Lord was leading you! Even if you didn’t know it in the moment!
When we’re tuned into our faith, coping and surviving these circumstances become, not so much easier, but far more tolerable.
God was talking,
Y’all were listening….
May your Blessings continue ,
💞💞🙏🙏🙏💞💞
Amen & Amen! ☮️💞✝️
Thank the Lord your water was unfrozen. Amen!
Great videi
Video. My dad use to climb under the house and heat the pipes with a butane torch. Many many years ago in MT.
If you have to wait for the pipes to thaw, open the tapes so when the ice melts, it won’t bust the pipes. This has saved me more than once.
I am so thankful for my daughter who checks water all day long. We are sort of used to freezing weather but I pray for all those who are not used to it.
Ooohhh... Frozen pipes! Those were always bad days at our cabin near Eureka Springs, Arkansas and we didn't have a farm or even a garden then! We had a primary heat tape go out one year that shattered all the main pipes into the cabin. I took the opportunity to move my pressure tanks indoors from under the cabin so making lemonade from broken eggs and omelets from broken eggs. Always the best route!
Congrats on 800K! Well deserving!
Truth... Kevin & Sarah are wonderful human beings! Love their channel...
There us so much Love ❤ on their Homestead! ❣️🤗❣️
I’m from Mo, and He not kidding, about being so cold your skin hurt, I was there out yesterday, getting some groceries. By the time I walked back to the car, my hands was shaking! My skin on my face, hurt!
Thank you for your honesty. Love the channel. keep up the good work
Frozen pipes...... I'm so sorry. We've learned over time that when freezing temps are in the forecast for us here in South Mississippi to collect lots of water in everything we can. Plus leave our water dripping along with heat lamps, etc. Down here in the south we don't know your pain with the winter woes but some of us have learned a hard lesson.
Good Luck with those pipes. Praying nothing is busted.
It's good that you guys show the true reality of homestead ing it's a great life but its not for everyone
After my husband passed away 6 years ago, I moved to Arkansas near my daughters. Before that I had a little farm between Birch Tree and Eminence, not all that far from Ava. Never had the pipes freeze but had to change out the rabbit bottles hourly. They would always freeze within that time. We also had to break the ice from the top of the big stock tanks each hour as well.
Thanks for sharing, even though it was more work for you as you wisely solved all the situation! Blessings & warmer weather hopefully soon🤗🇨🇦
God blessed by not letting your pipes split also.
FYI: Have your kitchen faucet (at night) on a very slow drip as you don't want pipes freezing in side the home. Also, open cabinet under sink to allow warm air to get in.
And, if your hot water freezes, be sure to open your hot water faucets until the water flows again, so pressure doean't build up in the lines and cause them to burst.
Praise God that the pipes didn' burst! Blessings!
Love the horns on your side by side!!!😂😂😂😂
Awesome! When we serve GOD HE always has a plan for us ..
Always listen to ur instincts ❤️
I think the cow that stopped & looked at the camera said thank u
oh no.. its cold here in new york state... 13 degrees
Country hero’s!👏👏👏
So happy for you that it wasn't worse.
When the tractor started I would have had to said, "Thank you Lord!!!" So glad the well thawed out and you evidently had no busted pipes. Again, "Thank you Lord!!!"
You are right! Life is good. ❤
I have used a propane fish cooker , (burner ) In my pump house when the smallest 1/4 “ pipe to the pressure switch has frozen. Warms it up and thaws thinks out really fast. I live in central Alabama and things are bad enough. I can not imagine what it takes to keep things working in Canada! Have a blessed day.
Glad things worked out well.
Maybe you should check into a magnetic block heater for the tractor. Place it on the oil pan and leave it plugged it. It would probably help get it started.
This old city woman finds your videos fascinating. Seeing the issue of using a young steer to tell when the dairy cow is in heat is something I certainly never thought of, but probably something farm folk have known forever. For me, it's just so clever. And the fact that Cletus decided his good fortune was to once again get to nurse after he'd had a short time to be one of the "big kids" is another thing we humans can find a charming nuisance. I hope Ralphie gets another friend to play with, one who won't put so much stress on Babe. Thank you both for sharing with us the actual hard work and responsibilities of caring for your animals.
Yes! The crux is Water! In SW Missouri its been brutal- had 2 of the 3 hydrants frozen- having to run a hose 175’ to fill stock tanks, had to do 5 gal bucket brigade the day before….no electric on farm property- generator to run stock tank heaters- FAIL- have solution next year! Follow The Grazing Farmstead as we learn together- Today is the last brutal day of cold! Wahoo but Monday bring freezing rain 🫣
Maybe putting up towers with decentralized small solar panels near all of the fowl's quonsets will keep them warm with a small ceramic heater or heat lamp, and a warm water heater in their water pans.
Looks like cletus is looking for a nother honey pot
❣️😂❣️
💖💖💖 We are still too cold here in Oregon. Had our pipes freeze to because of a lack a light bulb. Lesson learned. Hair dryer helped heat up our pipes. Not suppose to be this cold in the Willamette Valley! Hope we will start warming up and sending warmer temps your way. Take care and keep the heat lamp going on! ❇❇❇
homesteaders rule is the have extra water handy at all times:)
That’s a good looking steer
So sorry about the frozen pipes!
I clapped when the tractor started lol
Hey Kevin and Sara my wife and I have a well house also and we've used a small space heater on a timer for 10 years after we has issues back when we had -10 daytime temps years ago. This plan was told to us by a oldschool farmer who ran his farm off of a well and he was so right. We run the heaters aboit 15 minutes every other hour or so depending on the temperatures more if colder and less when it starts getting warmer. Heat lamps unfortunately are not reliable enough so that's an idea for you folks it works great.
We were watching your show today and we can definitely relate to your frozen water issues. We live in Western Kentucky (Paducah). We have been hauling water to our animals for about a week now. My poor chickens waddles and combs are showing signs of frostbite no matter how much protection or prevention measures we take. It’s not only stressful for them, but us also. I can’t wait until this crazy cold is gone! My husband suggested that your husband get a heated dip stick for your tractor and also a small torpedo heater for your pump house. You can get them in electric, gas or diesel and they work excellent! Much better than a heat lamp.
If you save the frozen, cracked eggs, you can let them thaw, crush the shells then mix with the eggs and scramble. In the scrambled state the chickens don't realuze they're eating their eggs. They need the extra protein in this weather. The eggshells nixed in give them extra calcium. The weather you're having is more normal where I live. Yesterday was the 1st day in a week or 2 that I didn't have at least a couple of frozen eggs
Aw man, we had that happen in Indiana a couple times. No big disaster, but it did make us sweat it for a bit. It is scary to think of not having water for animals. I always preach to keep the big troughs full in the winter. We can always thaw and scoop from them for the smaller animals.
Instead of having to open the door and let cold/frigid air inside, mount a themometer probe inside with gauge on outside, or maybe even better yet get a Wifi thermometer where you can be alerted on your phone. Sometimes a little money spent ($20 up to ??) saves alot in repairs or inconveinance. I know its not often you get such cold spells, but I know I hate having oh crap moments at the worst possible times and conditions. I'd also consider replacing pvc with pex pipes in well house as well before next winter as insurance. Glad you dodged a real disaster, the good Lord was watching over you all!
Yay! About the water
You might consider putting in a small solid window for viewing the light from the heat lamp so you don't have to open the well house door to check the heat lamp.
Get out the butane bottle flame welder - and heat back up the faucet and pipes. One could possibly also use those chemical foot and hand heaters and wrap them around the pipes - and continually replace them getting them back to warm.
Do you ever let Ralphy have the morning milk if you can't milk? So glad the water came back on! 🙏👍
I live in Missouri, for over 25 yrs. We all have basements, we do have tornadoes occasionally, I won't live without one.
Oh man I always worry about the critters. Told my family about the plug. Good job you guys!
It's worth considering buying a crankcase heater that goes in the dipstick tube. Here, during Ohio winters, even with the heater, my diesel tractor often needs a shot of starting fluid. Glad your water thawed.
I use a similar device that sticks to the bottom of the oil pan. My diesel tractor has never failed to start even when it gets to -20 or worse.
We use heat tape on all exposed pipes & always leave a slow trickle of water on in your faucets so pipes don’t freeze.
Oh the cows....love them
Hi ,have ya'll checked into rainwater harvesting.??. GOD BLESS
