Both are incredible sounding mics. To me the 87 sounded nice and tight and clean - but the moment I heard the 47 on your voice I was like "oh that's the one." Huge and powerful presence that made it feel like you're in the room with me.
cool! i needed this so thank you! u87 seems to need just a point of more gain to be really close to the 47. i made a patchwork between the two tracks in the daw and if im not looking it is really hard to notice the changes. Thanks for this video
I measured the lufs but sure it will never be completely the same ofc. What I've noticed is that most vintage Neumanns actually sound very close to each other especially if you process them! Thanks for watching
Not really. The energy just sits in different frequencies. the U47 is a bit forward... Frequencies closer to the human voice... Your hearing is attuned to those. The U87 has quite a bit more highs and a little more energy in the high- lows. The U47 also has both even and of harmonics... Where as the u87 only has a transformer with mostly 2nd order harmonic saturation. Their both great mics... The U47 is extra special in my opinion.... It's great with man sources... Especially vocals...But maybe doesn't shine quite as brightly for some applications.... It also takes EQ, very, very well.

The 87 sounded a little congested in the low mids. The 47 sounded surprisingly more present than the 87. I was not expecting that especially just after listening to the 47 vs the FET47 comparison, where the FET47 was noticeably brighter than the tube 47.
Since I recorded them both at the same time/same take I had to be a bit further away, only 30cm or so but the u47 is famous for its proximity build up which isn't as audioable in this example. The u87 seem to have allot more 400hz. U47 also is a bit more even which is nice (tube!?) But they're allot closer then I remembered. I borrowed the u87 since I sold my pair a couple of years ago. Yeah know that I've owned and tried all vintage LDC from Neumann (except m49 😭) I have to say they're extremely similar with some Eq in a mixed environment. I think I could take a fet design even closer to one of their tube mics if I added some harmonic saturation to that signal. Thanks for listening 💪💪

Dawg. Im Listen to this on my tv! And dude u can completely here the difference. The U47 Blows the U87 out of the water! Like other ppl was saying. It feels like im in the room with u. It has body, presence. Good top in. The vocal is alot smoother. The u87 sounds more compressed which could probably be better for rap vocals. But for singing that u47 (tube mic ) just sounds alot better. Amazing. Great video!
Not directly but I've owned both and the vintage is allot better. Vintage doesn't have the same bad capsule peak at 2.5-3khz it has better lowmids. Hopefully I can make a YT comparison in the future!
Thanks for doing this! Surprised by all the superlatives for the 87... sounds like an absolute telephone in the mix compared to the 47 for me here. Doesn't mean it doesn't have its uses, but here the 47 just makes it sound like a toy. Just mho.

@@Jjf109nine mics are quite personal so if you found a mic you love it's great! I hold my m269c as the best mic I've tried. It's fun non the less! I recently tried a tube mod to a u87 vintage and WOW. Completely transformed the mic. You should try it if you have the chance
I have never heard a Klaus Heyne U87. But I would like to hear that against an Andreas Grosser U87. Just 200€ for the mod and it sounds so good, much more open etc. I'm pretty sure, that the Klaused U87 is not better.
@@jochenh.7428 You cannot even compare a Klaus Heyne mod to Andreas Grosser, since the mod costs more than the mic itself and the quality you get is a 15k mic. Klaus does not do a generic mod. He listens, adjusts, listens, adjusts, listens, adjusts. For one week he does this only. The mod takes months and you have a 3-4 year waiting list. If you are lucky to get in. Klaus has the best ears in the industry, he knows how it should sound. Bruce Swedien used Klaus Heyne mics, so did Al Schmitt, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston etc… You cannot compare these two and I come from Hamburg, so no disrespect to Andreas here. With a Klaus Heyne mic you push up the fader and it sounds like a finished record, the best sounding, most emotionally engaging record you have ever heard. It‘s that good. All of these mics here and the shootouts cannot hold against any Klaus mod. Out of 5 mics, Klaus said that mine came out the best. The first time I heard it after the mod, I started to cry…I rarely cry in life.

True naumann U 47 fet sounds natural and warm. U47 is kung of condenser microphones. U 87AI can't compete it.

The 47 sounds more 3D and it's midrange glows. The 87 just sits there.

Yeah the U47 is usually described as "the baritone" mic! John Legend is a good example!

I wonder how the u47 compares to a u87 ai
From memory the u87ai had a bit more 400hz and more 3khz resonance then the u87 vintage but I haven't done an a/b comparison
