As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter what mic Prof. Dan uses. His beautiful rich voice could make a tin can sound awesome. Keep up the great work, God has definitely blessed you with the gift of music. Blessings!
Awesome song choice, you sounds great. This is like perfect scenario for U47 magic when you want to vocal to sound larger than life. I think a U87 sounds ordinary and congested without eq to open it up. The radio filter network, with the low pass at 16khz, the 3khz push and the build up from 400-800hz which you don't get with a U67. But thankfully, a vintage U87 in particular takes eq so well. It shines with how it works on practically any singer, and the non-AI on loud sources like guitar amps and floor tom, how it lacks sibilance and how it fits in a mix. Whereas the U47 basket is prone to pops, honk with loud singers and the high mid lift brings sibilance in cardioid with certain singers. It works well mainly on acoustic sources and in front of drum kit, sounding too big on lead vocal for some genres. Anyway, just wanted to defend the U87, ha.
Great comparison, Dan. I prefer the U47 here. The U87 is definitely clearer, and cuts through the mix for, but for this song I don't think it SHOULD do that. The 47 just melts right in.
Recently discovered your channel - amazing voice, amazing music and very useful comparison! To me the main difference in the mix is that the U47 has an upper mid 'cut' through the mix which works really well for you, not harsh, just present. Maybe a little richer in the lows too that balances out the clarity in the high mids, I can see why the U47 is the 'end-game' mic for male vocalists like yourself, but can also see why U87 is a safe choice for a wider variety of vocalists that could take EQ really well! I'll be coming back to these videos for reference quite a lot in future, such great music, thank you!
Sounds fantastic. I'm curious what reverb you're sending this vocal to, I can't find anything online about getting these late 50's and early 60's reverb sounds. While maybe this isn't the most reverb-intense example, the size and tonality is there on this verb. I'd assume some sort of plate, but I'd love to know what you think more specifically, Professor Dan!
I can't speak for him but I've used the Universal Audio Pure Plate and it's been pretty great for a vintage reverb sound. There are some reverb plugins that emulate real studios' echo chambers. Sadly the Universal Audio Capitol Chambers one can only be used through Universal Audio hardware. If that one ever becomes natively available I'll get it in a heartbeat!
Beautiful performance, Dan. Very nice! I really like that you 87 on your vocals. It’s smooths it out somehow and made it sound pleasing. I’m looking at getting either a U 47 or a u 87 for my vocals. Unfortunately, I have kind of a nasally thing in my vocals and I think that the U 87 would help tame that. What are your thoughts?
I may be slightly crazy here, but I believe I can detect a little more "air" between your voice and the U47. I know the mics are spaced about equally from you but I seem to hear the effect as though the 47 was positioned farther away. And I like the additional air as it seems to provide a little more of the room you're in. Wonderful singing, Dan.
They both sound excellent but the 47 would be my pick, for your awesome voice. Was wondering which preamp you used and if you recorded with any compression 👍
@@ProfessorDan Thank you for the reply, Love the CAPI pre amps, I built 4 of the VP 28’s about 10 years ago and I just love them. I also bought and built 2 of the Bumblebee rm5’s after watching your demo a couple of months ago. Thank you for that🙂 Keep up the great vids
This was a treat. What a lovely voice. Wish more people would sing these old country tunes.
I have listened to you sing this Five times!!
Thanks so much, Fred. And thanks, too, for subscribing!
@@ProfessorDan,
👍😊
I every week.
Well, all I can say is, what a fantastic country voice you have. That was just a fantastic performance. 👏👏👏
Six times and I put it on my Twitter feed!😊

My conclusions: Great Singer !
Me sumo por el U47. Genial grabación, suena en vitrina la voz, saludos desde Chile, felicitaciones.
Nice voice, nice microphones. Jose Luiz Filo. Brazil.
Wow! Nice to hear real music/ singing after a long time ! You sound great on both. 87 has more clarity. Lovely song but wish it was not sad 😢😊
Man, that was a great performance! Also a great A/B... you can really hear the strengths of each well. Thanks, and great job!
Yer voice is butter. Well done. 47!!!
I originally found your channel looking for mic sounds but subbed cause I love your singing man
Thanks, man. I really dig old microphones!
@@ProfessorDan just built my own vintage u-87 circuit with a u-47 capsule from mic-parts. Absolutely love it!
@@TeleNobels How are those mic-parts kits? I've been thinking of building one myself.
What a voice! Awsome! Greets from Switzerland PS: both mics sound fantastic
What a treat to hear the song/singing. For a vintage sounding track like this, I like the U47. The U87 would be great on other styles/arrangements.
This is awesome! Beautiful fiddling, and singing!!!!!

Well said!
Great finding. For low frequency and low tempo songs U47 is a great choice.
I find it the exact opposite
U47 has better 3D and space in the mix. Very nice singing!!!
Thanks a lot!
Dayum’ good cover! Thank you for keeping Bluegrass and real Country Music alive!
Big Fan!
Thanks for tuning in, Uncle Fred!
U87 .
Wow! Thank you for keeping trad vocals alive!
Man what a VOICE!- Both mics sound amazing on that voice but the 47 on you is BUTTER!... that's the sound!
Both sound great. That U47 is special.
Thank ye, kindly.
U87

I love your voice and the way you sing much more than both mics.
Beautiful vintage mics but the singing is really incredible, Loving it Mr Dan 🤠
Oh man...I don't know 🤷♀️ which one should I buy? Heeelp. PS. You have a great voice!
You should have thousands of Subbies!
87 !!!!
You are awesome dude!
No...you are!
U47 by a mile!! Sits in the mix way better, and yet, is more 3D at the same time!
Hey a guy comparing microphones who can actually sing amazing!!! 🤩👍
Watched twice and saved the Vid!
Nice singing !
Thanks!

Me too, I think it’s the tube
You're a good singer. I prefer the sound of the u47. It is more balanced.
So the mics sound identical?
They both sound excellent but the 47 would be my pick, for your awesome voice. Was wondering which preamp you used and if you recorded with any compression 👍
Thanks, Russ. I used a CAPI VP26 preamp with no hardware compression. There might be a touch of FabFilter compression on the vocals to level them out.

Great singing !!
You would sound great on a $10 mic
The voice and singer are 99%
The mic is 1%
Great job with the song. I don't have a finely ear, but I thought U87 sounded better.
The U87 is a fantastic mic.
