This video made me truly understand how hard-working Edison Pen Company's members are. I'm one of those people who get frustrated when things don't get in stock in like 3 days. Especially when the machine got down and Goulet Pens couldn't get more Delphiniums, I thought they could get back-up machines. However, now watching this, I realized that even acquiring laids and making every part by manually turning the machine and assembling by hand in a relatively boutique company was a very time-consuming process that had a risk of the process becoming unstable if something went wrong. I think negative people who always complain that pen manufacturers are lazy should watch this and appreciate the workmanship of a family-based company. Thanks for the two Brian G's and GPC for uploading this video:)
Thanks Hyun! I'm glad that this sheds light upon the process and how demand can (and sometimes certainly will) exceed our capabilities, especially with the Seasonal Premieres. And it's not something that we can just cure overnight, either. With these new machines and probably 1-2 more employees we should be in a position to not have these issues in the future...but who can say right now? Not even me! And then lets say that the new machinery does keep us on top of all our demand 100%...then we are looking at more growth! So more machines after that? More employees after that? But it is a nice problem to have! :) And I think that it was clear in the video that I don't want to manage people all day and I don't want to become a huge company. I want to have my hands in the product, which could certainly mean having this issue from time to time as demand and growth occurs and we remain small. But we have done a very good job with the 2018 Winter Premieres! They also had a rush, and we're still keeping them in stock! :) Thanks for the feedback and comments!
This is the best Goulet Pen video I've seen because I'm a fan of Goulet Pen and Edison Pen. I've bought a production Edison pen from Goulet, and two signature pens directly from Edison Pen. I couldn't be happier with the service from both Brian G's.
Thanks Bob! If you enjoyed that, we did another one about 2.5 years ago that was actually longer and a bit more in-depth... ua-cam.com/video/ptk29G21rAw/v-deo.html
Excellent to be a listener of this conversation. So much of it resonates here at our home. We also operate a small home based biz. To be married and be in the same biz together and not kill each other can be a feat for some couples, lol. As computer & networking specialists, we get to work in a few machine shops and work with industrial type lathes, laser cutters, etc... what it takes to set them up and keep them operating efficiently can be mind boggling. Definitely not a 1-2-3 fix when something fails. The knowledge that guys like you bring to the table is invaluable and it is great that we can all learn from each other and have these kinds of chats in forums like this! Keep doing what you are doing. You guys are rocking it!
What a great background video on Edison Pens. I've bought a few of the Signature Line pens via the internet, but what a treat it was to meet Brian Gray at the Detroit Pens show this year (2023) and purchased a Brockton Nebula with an extra fine flexible nib. Without me even asking Brian checked, tuned and tweaked the nib. It's one of the best writing nibs that I have and overall between the looks of the pen and the writing quality it is one of my favorite pens. I am looking forward to enjoying writing with this pen and to be on the lookout for more pens from Edison Pens.
Brian and Brian.... I've purchased my first 2 Edison pens in the last month or so and I have to say.... I absolutely love them both. I have the Collier and the Beaumont (Broad and Stub nibs) and they are both usually in my daily carry case. Appreciate BOTH of you and what you and your companies do and love my Edison Pens.... KUDOS to you both. It was very cool to see you both just talking shop here in this video.
I love the fact that a human hand has touched my pen during the manufacturing process ( I only own about 12 pens and 5 are Edisons). Best of Luck to the Brians. PS. South Mountain, ONTARIO has NO stop lights but we do have a stop sign!
HI Leslie. Thanks for the comments and I'm glad that you are enjoying your Edison! We'll keep doing what we do! :) And sounds like you understand very small-town life as well!
Great video. Enjoyed getting to know more about Edison Pens...looking forward to adding one to my collection one day. Love Luna, what a cute pup, great that she hangs out at the shop. Good luck with your new equipment.✒
Thanks Cheryl! And yes, Luna is still a puppy at about 7 months, but she's learned everything that we've been training her on very fast! She's a smart puppy and fun to have in the shop. :)
In my opinion, American Fountain Pen world is very activr and stil processing. I mean, like Edison or Karas Kustom, Tactile Turn..there are many new fascinating maufacturers' brand. Edison is very distinctive cause they made marvelous swirl, classic style pen. I hope someday Edison expand their brand to here, South Korea.
Hi Konvoi. Thanks for the kind words! And remember that a custom pen directly from us can ship FedEx to South Korea. I'm sure that the Goulets can do the same. :)
As a former Milaner and EHS grad, I totally relate to the "leaning in to" the Edison thing. I drove my Seattle-raised cousin around Milan once (through our single stop light) (two, if you count the one at US 250 leaving town) in about five minutes and said, "That's Milan." Her graduating class was bigger than my entire high school. Also, wow, a 17 week lead time on customs? I may need to get my order in soon in case production really takes off.
Well done... Loved this little tiny look at you both. From the back room beginning in your homes to the expansion you both enjoy. A most excellent success story.... Bloody good show gentlemen,,, well done. Best wishes to both of you. And... Best wishes as always to all pen people. LeZc @@
As did we the same day! My son Andrew was spending the entire day with us due to this including our dinner with Brian and Drew. He was quite to trooper with some long days!
Yes, we need to do this more regularly, as both of our business have been changing. Comparing this with each other and showing our fans how synergistic our businesses are is informative and fun!
Hey, so this isn't anything about your video, but about the shop. So I've almost bought a few things I want twice, but due to some other reasons, I couldn't at that moment. Today, i sat down to buy the things and shipping was so much higher! I mean, it went from 23$ to 65$, and I just wanted to buy about 75$ worth. I want to ship it to Costa Rica. Not sure if this is something temporal, and I should just wait for prices to drop lower, or something like that. Sorry if this isn't really the best place to write on, I can delete the comment if you want :)
Kader Gian. Hiya Do you know someone in the US who can buy the pen for you at your instructions, then send it to you as a gift. The shipping maybe less and check your customs import / postal duties for their limits. What I'm suggesting is quite naughty,,,, awww big deal. Just use your brains about it. Best wishes. LeZc @@

Madrenna Griffith haha I don’t know about that with the kids, but we definitely are closer than most business relationships. The Grays are just such genuinely good people -Brian
Thanks! Madrenna! And the Goulets are equally good people! It's been a great relationship from the very beginning and I foresee it only getting better! :)
Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about iridium point nibs. I have a couple fountain pens i made from wooden kits and they have iridium nibs. They write nicer than steel in my opinion but in was wondering where they "rank" for lack of a better word, in terms of fountain pen nib materials.
You know someone’s a Fountain Pen enthusiast when their fingers are soaked in fountain pen ink! I loved this one and I hope in future we’ll have more of these interviews :)
Come on, Brian Goulet, you know you should have had an Edison pen on the desk instead of that Visconti Homo Sapiens! I'm surprised the other Brian didn't tease you about that. :-)
It's definitely steep for a steel nib pen, maybe too steep for some. That said, it's a great company with really nice pens. The steel nib on the Edison's I've tried is smoother than a lot of my gold nib pens. - Colin

Edison Pen Co. Brian G's Hans are stained from ink. A true fountain pen master.

Thanks Chris! Enjoy your current Collier and potentially your future Collier! :)

Really Brian Goulet, a Visconti Homo Sapien? While interviewing Brian Gray? Lol. Great pens Brian.
Edison pens look fantastic, but I find the pricing is unreasonable...

A USA made boutique fountain pen? I find it reasonable. The signature models are a little pricey but they are also semi custom.
