Brian Goulet's Trip To LAMY Germany
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 лис 2024
- In December 2017 Brian Goulet had the opportunity to travel to the LAMY headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. Being that this was the first time he’s ever left the US, he wanted to do a vlog-style video of his journey, breaking the typical format of Goulet Pens videos. Watching it, you can get a good sense of what it was like to travel 18-hours each way to get to Germany, and what Brian got to see as part of his all-access tour of the iconic pen manufacturer. Enjoy!

i love how different this video feels! you can see how fun this felt and the music made it feel much more vloggy :)
Atom Briones that’s exactly what we were going for! -Brian
Best part of travel is getting back home. I had to basically ‘live’ on planes, trains, and autos for over twenty years and really don’t miss all the hassles and exhausting schedules. Being a touring musician is a great life but I am now happy to mainly stay home and play with my collection of ink and fountain pens. Glad to see you had a safe and productive trip, Mr. Goulet.
I love the filming! And your little daughter is sooo cuteeeee! Thanks for this!!!
Perfect timing.... As my LAMY 2000 literally arrived at my door just a couple of hours ago. Can't wait to use it. Also, thank you, Brian.
I think you will love this pen. I received mine recently. After almost three weeks of continuous use I couldn't see any ink through the ink window. After another week the pen is still writing with no sign of ink starvation or dryness. I have no idea where the ink is coming from but I am determined to write this thing dry. The medium nib is smooth and a pleasure to use. Have fun with your new pen!

There is a possibility it was designed that way on purpose. Such as how the "E" on a car's fuel gauge doesn't actually indicate an empty tank. Simply there to let drivers know it's time to immediately fuel up or actively look for a gas station. Though if they can't find one, they still have a surprising amount of fuel still left in their tank for now.
Perhaps the same with the 2000. The window being clear indicates enough ink to get you through the rest of your work-day. But be sure to fill her up when you get home. Being a piston filler, this would make sense as you can't simply swap out a new cartridge for an empty one. Been using a Monteverde fountain pen at work. Also have a 5-pack of Parker Quink cartridges in my work-bag. When I start using the 2000, that won't be a viable option anymore. And i do more writing in one work-day than most people do in a month. A big emergency reserve indicator of ink is going to be very useful to me.
I did it! I emptied the Lamy 2000! After running on "Empty" for more than a week and writing "The quick brown fox . . ." on several pages the pen is finally dry. Funny thing is it wrote as if full up until the end then it skipped a few times and quit abruptly. What a great writer! This is becoming my new favorite pen.
NGMonocrom so a month later, how do you like it?

Still like it quite a bit. Though that legendary Sweet Spot can get a bit annoying at times. But worth buying, I'd say. With the exception of the Pilot Vanishing Point, there is no other modern-day (Post W.W.II) iconic fountain pen design out there. Let's face it, with technology going at the rate it is.... there won't be any new, future, iconic models either. Every collection should have one of each. And unlike many other iconic designs, these two are still in Production. So they're affordable.
One odd bit of advice, Macralon (not sure of the spelling) is basically fiberglass mixed with resin. If you enjoy a bit of honey with your baked goods or your tea, be sure to keep it far away from your LAMY 2000. Honey reacts with fiberglass on a molecular level and with break it down from whatever shape it has been turned into. There's a rather obscure and quite frankly horrific true story that took place in the music world decades ago involving a woman, and a bowl made out of fiberglass in which honey was poured into. Though since this is a family-friendly channel, I won't go into the details.
Those long overseas flights are so hard; I can never sleep either. Thank you for sacrificing time with your family for this. (That hug with Rachel at the beginning killed me. So many memories brought up.) Germany looks amazing though.
Lamy hasn't really been on my radar up to this point, but their factory looks remarkably efficient and clean, and they appear to really take pride in their work and love what they do. I may have to give one a go. You may have gained at least one new customer for them with this trip.
Instant thumbs up for being a loving husband and a great father, Brian!
dragonboy123000 that’s what it’s all for -Brian
What a great video. It was almost like I took the trip with you. Thank you for sharing.
Donna G that’s the idea!! :) -Brian
Wow, a really great video! Especially seeing Germany and the Lamy factory. I REALLY love the old-fashioned Christmas Markets they have over there!
Thank you, Brian.
Anzan Hoshin Roshi you’re very welcome! Thanks for commenting on all our vids here too, you’re always one of the first! -Brian
What a BEAUTIFUL place, definitely on my bucket list now. I'm sure shooting that video was a pain but THANK YOU SO MUCH for showing us. That factory was AMAZING💥💥💥
Madrenna Griffith it wasn’t a pain, it was an absolute blast. Hope to do more of it in the future! -Brian
Loved this, Brian. Thanks for taking us along with you. What a trip! 😍
I really enjoyed your trip, Germany is a beautiful country and the natives are so friendly. Very impressed with the quality of Lamy products. Many thanks for sharing your adventure.
Yaaaay, It seems like I have been waiting forever for this!
Your little girl is the cutest little thing
Elena PINEDA yay! One more vid to come too ;) yes Ellie is about the cutest in the world, at least my world! -Brian
Absolutely enjoyed the tag along with you! Mighty fine job of editing. Thanks for the trip.
honeydooda that editing is all Andi! She rocked this one -Brian
This was such a fun video to watch! It looks like you had an awesome time Brian and all that behind the scenes at the Lamy factory was wonderful. You definitely were lucky to go when you did to see a lot of the festive season in Germany. I hope if you go on other trips we get to see more of these fun Vlog style posts as they are really genuine and show you just having a blast on your travels.
Should have one in the next few weeks of Brian & Drew's trip to see Edison Pens! - Colin
Amazing Brian. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
That was wonderful. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the great vlog! I loved seeing the scenery in Germany along with the fountain pen factory footage.
Sharon Pickett more factory footage to come! -Brian
Oh right! I almost forgot that you never left the states before. I can see that you're really enjoying your first time :P
Rionaldy Triantoro it was a lot of firsts for me! -Brian
So bizarre. At first I was like "hey, I know that airport!...oh right, he's in Richmond, but then when you got to Germany I thought "hey, I know that hotel!" - which is much less likely. I remember staying there many years ago, maybe around 1996 or so. Oh, and of course at Lamy the waiting room chairs would be Wassily Chairs. Re: the nice pens at a department store, I remember growing up in DC (we're probably about the same age, so not THAT long ago) the local Staples had Montblanc fountain pens.
TheRacerRich this airport was actually Dulles up in DC, I had to drive from Richmond to DC to fly out. Long trip! -Brian
Yeah, I know, just less surprising that you'd be at IAD when I remembered what city your business is in.
Looks like you had a really great time. Thanks for sharing!
That was great!! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience in Germany. I loved all those pen displays!
Watchhead11 you’re so welcome -Brian
Thanks for sharing. Need to add to my bucket list as a place to visit.
Tracey Wright for sure. It was awesome -Brian
What a great video, and an amazing tribute to Germany and Lamy. I'm from Germany, living in the US now and I can appreciate how much effort you have put into showing what this trip and Germany is all about. Loved every single second of it! Thanks Brian! You're a vlogger now :-) Please keep them coming!
JMILINA haha, NOW I’m a vlogger? Okay, I’ll take it haha ;) -Brian
Haha, I'm so sorry, this was supposed to say: "travel vlogger" hahaha, you are a "travel vlogger now". It was supposed to be a compliment and losing the one word somewhere...well, I hope you know I was giving you a compliment ;) I'm a big fan of what you guys are doing :)
Great video Brian! Thank you for this insight into Lamy and Germany.
Thank you, Brian. - Great video! - Fine touches like this sets you apart.
Fabio Barahona thank you -Brian
One of our favorite cities. And...the Lamy store is in the main drag; so, there is always something fun to find. Don’t forget to check out Pelican if you can.
Thanks Brian!!! Absolutely love the video keep up the amazing job
That was awesome and enjoyable! Seeing Lamy factory and glimpse into their pen production was great. Never been to Europe myself, so it was nice to see a little of Germany too. Thanks.
Jung Roe one more in depth factory vid to come! -Brian
Brian thanks for this, and also to Andi for putting it together. What fascinated me were the machine used to make the pens and nibs, really impressive. I gather some are actually designed "in house" by Lamy.
Loved the scenes from the markets, and seeing the pen display's in the department store brought back fond memories, as this is something one does not see in NA.
Peter Hofmann yes, lots of custom equipment there! More to come, we have one more video that’s going deep into the factory -Brian
Looking forward to it
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful.
Nice video. Thanks for taking the time to shoot it and edit it so nicely.
Richard King you’re very welcome! -Beian
I love Germany . Lived there during my childhood. Kids learn to use a fountain pen first and only later on they start writing with ballpoint pens. I still keep my Pelikan Pelikano model of the seventies and it is working fine as ever. My very first fountain pen. Now I have a collection of more than 30 FPs, from different brands, models and prices and love them all.
Loved the way that when he got there he was like "we're here...LAMY". i love lamy pens too so i totally understand your excitement
Elven Art so excited! -Brian
Pish to those few that wanted to seem more of the "work" side of things; you produce enough of those on a regular basis. I enjoyed seeing your reaction to Germany...and having live here for over two decades, I know you picked a great time to do it! Glad you enjoyed it and keep up the good work!
Well, we can have our cake & eat it too! Think this vlog gives a nice perspective of Brian traveling to Europe for the first time, and we'll have another video to show off LAMY production & machines in all their glory. - Colin
Loved the video. Have an awesome week.
Will look forward to more trips to Germany for kaweco or Faber castell?
Brian Goulet is my hero !
Brian, I do believe you're living the dream :D Thanks for the footage!
Also that bit about pens sold in department stores not common in the US is news to me, since we have them here too and I just assumed they were the norm. I've seen even brands like Visconti in some of the higher end department stores #themoreyouknow
fantastic,thank you for this ...
That's one super video !!!.... thanks !!! ☺☺
Love the travel vlog!
thank you! great trip! :-D
Thanks for filming this Brian! I have never traveled overseas, so I enjoyed the virtual vacation without jet lag or calories, lol!
Lu Smith this was my first time! What an experience :) -Brian
I hope you enjoyed your visit in Heidelberg. Beuatiful city, just 20 min from where I live.
Quite interesting fact by the way:
Despite the automation shown in the factory, the Lamy Safari Ballpoint and Mechnical Pens (I dont know about the pens though) still get mounted by hand. Most time that happens in a workshop for disabled people, in one of which I worked a few weeks last year. Quite interestering experience.
This was such a great video! I really hope you do more vlog-style stuff in the future!
We have another vlog coming later this month on Brian & Drew's trip to the Atlanta Pen Show! - Colin
Love the vlog style of video!
I have been watching you for 5 years
Great video of the trip. Looked fun.
David Jacobson thanks! I had a blast -Brian
The Goulet Pen Company Brian, my daughter in law was in Heidelberg last fall and was in the flagship store. She bought me a Petrol set. I asked to let me know when her work sends her back. But your video showed me how wide-eyed I’d be if I got to visit there. So many pens to fill the Lamy collection. lol
I've been looking forward to this video since you mentioned you were going. It's great to see Lamy in action and the Heidelberg store. We'd love to see you tour the Pilot or Sailor plants in Japan or any of the Italian pen makers.
I think Brian might be eyeing a Pilot trip at some point, would love to see that as well. - Colin
Wow, what an amazing trip! I bet you missed your family so much.
Great video! Thanks!
IAD! I’m always so excited to be there
Loved the video! Great vlog! ❤️
Christmastime in Germany...what could be better!!
Outsider I felt like I was in a snow globe! -Brian
Outstanding video, Brian. Thank you for shooting it for us. Slightly off subject....should you ever get the chance to go through Iceland again, hopefully your layover will be long enough to do a little shopping at the airport gift-shop. Icelandic wool is the absolutely SOFTEST cloth in the world. While in the Air Force, I was a member of an airborne radar surveillance aircrew and we would deploy to Keflavik a few times a year to pull alert duty there. We'd be scrambled to intercept Russian bombers over the North Atlantic. On one deployment, I bought my wife a pull-over sweater with matching tamasham (sp) made with Icelandic wool that was really beautiful and SOFT.....like baby's hair and their prices are truly affordable. I have no doubt that Rachel and your little girl would LOVE something like that. Icelandic folks are really great people, too.
William Dungan Jr. aw man! I wanted to so bad, but as you could tell here, I had like no downtime there. Next time! -Brian
Nice well made video
Looks like it was a great trip!
Oh Yes, old beautiful Heidelberg
I'm German in heritage so its nice to see it again
Darn, you were so close, and I just couldn't make it to the pen meetup- Hope there will be a next time sooner or later.
Daniel Spielmann so sorry! Next time ;) -Brian
Great video! In The Netherlands during early winter, the sun rises at about 8:30 AM :-)
Really enjoy your Travel, Trip videos like also the one to Pilot USA. Wish you could do more "remotes".
I hope someday be able to go visit germany and take one of my beloved lamy pens with me, as an small: "going back home" for it.
Thanks for all your effort in the making of this video Brian! Very good production ( I'll advise you to get a small exterior microphone..) and a pain that only 500 people press the "like" bouton. Anyway, don't worry you are doing an excellent work in this small world of the stilophillia . Thanks
I still have hope that they will bring back the Dark Lilac ink. It's so beautiful. I scored only one bottle and I'm not even using it because I don't want to run out. I realize that's crazy. Would it really hurt them to add Dark Lilac to their permanent line? Please!
I think it's only a matter of time before that ink comes back considering the success it had. No insider information, but they'd be crazy not to! Also, use the ink up if you love it! That's what it's whole purpose. - Colin
wow, you have stayed at " europäischer hof hotel" `really nice hotel in Heidelberg. I have been there for the 60 th birthday of my father...and yes, I live in Heidelberg :)
Great video of Heidelberg but I would have liked to see more info on the Lamy plant and more insight as to the inner workings of the plant.
Still have one more video to go! Should show more of the factory in that. - Colin
You have such a beautiful family!
LAMY and a Brown Standard Traveler's Notebook (if not a Midori) - right? Excellent video of your trip
Deb Smith I’m actually rocking the olive traveler’s notebook! Used to be Midori, they spun off the brand to just be called Traveler’s Company now. Same product tho. Seems fitting for this journey! Works great in any color tho -Brian
That was a cool video nice job.
Awesome.
Wow, impressive!
beautifully filmed.
Marlene Zenker thank you! -Brian
Do your children watch your videos? This also is like a snapshot of what you do when your children gets older.
mega evolution not often, but this one they did. They got bored tho haha. They’re only 6 and 8. -Brian
Great video. Enjoyed taking the trip with you. Hope you ordered some Lamy 14k gold nibs while you were there. 😉
The Goulet Pen Company
I only need one or maybe two 😄
In a world before Corona. I miss this time....
Thanks for sharing your EuroTrip! What are those goggles with the green glow at the beginning?
They're called Retimer glasses, supposed to help with jet lag apparently. - Colin
Love the video. Can you do a video of lamy manufacturing pen. I would think that would be interesting
Kosh K that one’s coming up soon -Brian
I gotta ask - did Brian end up flying business class when he went out of country with Rachel? I feel like that’d be a nice treat for her especially given her travel anxieties.
I have a friend from Heidelberg. I'll have to try to reconnect and visit. LOL
Looks beautiful! - Colin
What's being blurred out on the machines at 14:02?
Ozzman500 Lamy asked us to blur out any of the names of equipment they use, they’re trade secrets -Brian
Amazing trip! Thanks, Brian. If this pen thing doesn't work out you can become an international tour guide! : )
Andrew Camacho haha, not a bad plan b! -Brian
what were those glasses on the plan?? Also- cool video :) love seeing inside a pen company's production
Andrew P they’re called Retimer glasses, to help with jet lag! -Brian
Small Goulet FTW!
justalurkr ;) -Brian
Brian Neistat? Casey Goulet? Either way. It works for me. Keep it up Goulet gang.
No One Cares I will take this as a high compliment! ;) love Casey’s work, Peter McKinnon too. Andi and I talk about them a lot! -Brian
I’m in the D.C. area (the DMV-eye roll), where are you located?
We're based in Richmond! - Colin
"Pancakes with home-made garlic cream or with fruity applesauce." (I am assuming they are potato pancakes.) Did you try them?
Richard DeClue not those particular ones, unfortunately! -Brian
Is the Lamy factory open to visit for tourist?
Dude! Icelandair for your first overseas trip. Just like I did...
Aww should have taken the princesses with you. Germany is a nice place.
And you had a Nussecke
I really would love to! Someday ;) -Brian
Feel like whoever edited this and Brian had different ideas about when you should be able to hear Brian speak 😂
Brad davis Andi was working with what she had! I’m a total video amateur, and just didn’t give her the best audio. Garbage in, garbage out ;) -Brian
I just noticed the Goulets have the -exact same kitchen- as Snake Discovery does. What? O.o
Nice to see a vlog without people walking around with facemasks....
WOAH loud Christmas sweater.
Christopher go big or go home! -Brian
I would suggest to make a video more informative. In your next visit into a corporations tour please give us more information of what we are seeing in the video. Please look at TGV urban Gentry channel here on UA-cam and how he explains all the process of making watches. This also can be done with the pen corporation tours. Thanks for what you do and the videos you pu out!
I think you'll see a lot more of that in the next LAMY video that Andi's working on. More a 'how it's made' than this vlog style! - Colin
Awesome ok! very excited to see that one! Thanks!!!
I have that same exact banana holder. :)
Is that IAD?
1:58....Does anyone know what those green-lighted goggles Brian's wearing on the plane used for?? Sorry, I'm not a traveler. I avoid plane travel like the plague!
They're called Retimer glasses, to help with jet lag. - Colin
The Goulet Pen Company Oh wow! Thanks!!
