Great video! My kids are 20 & 21 and I still keep a fully stocked first aid kit. It always amazes me how many people don't even have simple bandages in their homes.
I made a little make up bag - really small for when my daughter turned 11 ;) band aids, a couple of sanitary pads and a couple of painkillers - I made sure the bag didn’t look anything special and it was just for the bottom of her school bag.
Couple of extras we keep in the first aid kit is sanitary products (pads, tampons & wet wipes). Yeah, my girls usually pack their own in their bags, but sometimes you may need a lighter option or so on. Having those have proven to be very helpful.
I have some pantyliners i keep for possible injuries now. I'm a diabetic with neuropathy in my legs and feet. One day i was walking back from a garden my husband was putting in and i thought i'd just brushed past some random item and went inside. When my husband came inside he saw blood dripping from my leg. I jabbed myself pretty deep. I didn't feel any pain whatsoever, though. All this happened when covid first brought everything to a stand still. I didn't have any 2x2's, 3x3's, etc. but found a stray box of panty liners. I just cut them in half and we treated my wound at home until i could get into my doctor.
What an interesting video. Thanks for sharing this. If you want to get rid of the packaging just cut off the back of the box with dosage and directions and put that in the box with the medicines. Nice job, Jen. 🌺
Great tips! I've been in the medical field around 20 years, I would also keep all medications in their complete packaging if possible. Because it not only has it's uses but dosing, warnings, expiration dates and other important information. I am also working on getting a first aid kit together 🙂
I go through entire containers of Vaseline all the time. We use it for so many things, especially in the winter. I also use naproxin for everything headache cramps, back ache. I remember the crushed pills in applesauce or peanut butter. I still do that for the niblings
This is a very thorough kit! Thank you. I have bought Midol and use it for headaches now. Works great. I also gave memories of my mom crushing Asprin (when you could still give it to children) between spoons adding a little sugar and water. I'm going through my kit and checking dates and adding a few Mort items. Thanks!☺
Thank you. We're moving out of a big, 2 story house into a tiny apartment due to finances, etc. I currently have two big baskets filled with gallon sized bags of various categories. Absolutely no where to put that! But when I saw your boxes and categories, I'm going right now to see if that will work. I never thought of little food containers!
I did this for my daughter when her and her husband got stationed in Japan. She loved it. And of course mama included stuff that she wouldn't of thought of.
Love this! We need to update our stuff. Do you remember the red stuff that our parents and grandparents used to put on our cuts. And i remember my grandfather using butter for burns.
Definitely helpful to me! I have a meds basket we use daily with vitamins and such but I wanting to put together a 1st aid kit for the bathroom. Our kiddos are older now so not so much falls and scrapes. I just like to be prepared. I have my elderly mother with us and I just want to be more organized and prepared.
Coban came in handy for me when I took the tip of my thumb off with a mandolin slicer. It can be wrapped tightly if you don't have any compression bandages. It's also inexpensive.
Your post was so helpful. I just went to dollar tree two days ago but for my garden items but I will be getting my first aid items from there. You have been a great help to me. Can't wait for another post
I have a first aid kit that I bought a few years ago and luckily have not had to use….usually when we get hurt, it’s the ER for us. Like finger going into the food processor. But I digress…..I am going to get that kit out and see what’s in there and if it’s any good . Thanks for the video…I bet it has gotten lots of people thinking
This kit is awesome! We do a similar checklist before our camping trips every year. Because when you're in the middle of the woods, it's incredibly useful having an updated first aid kit.
Love this. Friends, if you’re in Canada, and have an emergency, please be kind to our health care professionals. They are doing the best they can. Our health care is struggling very badly right now.
Love the kit, I love dt finger bandages. I did have an allergic reaction to dt triple antibiotic ointment, it was weird. Evidently in my old age i now have a sulpha allergy. I used school pencil boxes for first aid, cold, etc. I got a whole bunch when they were pennies during back to school sales. I got clear. I even put period stuff and just keep in each bathroom.
Oh I learned this the hard way. A few summers ago my son closed the door on his thumb. We didn't have anything to wrap his hand in when we were taking him to the hospital. We had to wrap his hand in a tea towel 🙈 as soon as we got home I ordered a kit and keep right at the front of the press so I can grab it quickly. Xx
Yes Jen this is so true. Our daughter just had her first baby and been wanting to send her one of these. It’s just me and my hubby and I still keep one of these kits stocked.
When covid first came out, I could not find my medicine cabinet thermometer. At one point I was a restaurant cook and I had a pocket thermometer. I took my temperatures with that. I think it goes from -20 to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
Love this content. Probably not a dollar store type item but a little first aid booklet in the kit is helpful to have on hand when an emergency occurs.
I keep 3 bins at my house each bin is labeled. Stomach, cold, first aid. For instance everything to do for any stomach problems, Cold flu, first aid all the family knows to just go to the closet and all they have to grab is the bin that is labeled for whatever is wrong. It’s been very helpful to everyone. We had to grab the first aid bin last week because I cut my finger pretty bad. Coband is awesome but hard to find. Where do you suggest getting it? Thanks for sharing! Everyone really needs a first aid kit!
I’ve been struggling with keeping my medicine cabinet well organized and I have very limited storage space. This is great advice, I’m going to get 3 small bins from the dollar store. Thank you 🙏💗🙏
I have made similar kits when my sons went to college. Usually had to refill every year. When they called me complaining that they or their roomies were sick I reminded them of what they had. The only thing I added was a couple of handfuls of Chap Stick.
Great idea! We definitely have all that with 2 boys. I also keep a kit for my oldest who has a stinging bug allergy. His EpiPen, steroid meds, creams, etc go in a separate container.
I think even though the Halls bag doesn’t have a lot, it’ll still serve the purpose of helping you in a pinch until you can get more! Also, Big Lots has a good variety of meds too!
Excuse me, when you use triple antibiotic ointment in a wound, do you have to use it consistently during a couple of weeks? To avoid bacterial resistance?
The alcohol prep pads are good for nausea too. I cannot take pills. In hospital they use prep pads on the nose and you breath that in. It really helps to stop nausea & vomiting
Thanks for those. Some great information. I need to re-do my first aid kit. My mom used to grind up aspirin and put it in apple sauce to get me to take it. It tasted horrible.
Get the reusable ice cubes, then you don't have to worry about leaking ice bags or having to clean the ice bag. Also the price dots are great to write the expiration date on. Easier to see anyway.
Such a great idea. I made something like this when my kids left the house for college. I am going to make them a new one since it’s been several years. The never have medicine at their houses. Thanks for the video and have a great day
My daughter recently moved out and we prepared a similar pack for her. You are right, running to a pharmacy is the last thing you want to do when you are not feeling well.
Yes to preparing ahead of time. There's nothing worse than being at the pharmacy waiting for something and someone walks in, coughing hard and then asking 'Do you guys have a Covid test and also NyQuil?' Makes me want to have instant hazmat powers! Btw, an oxymeter is also good to have these days. (Definitely not available at DT though 😉)
My parents are both registered grad school nurses and when my brother, sister and I respectively left home they made us a hugeeee kit like this to have at our apartment and I'm now 35 and it has followed me for this whole time! Of course I replace things as they expire but still.
I wish I'd thought to check Dollar Tree before buying basic first aid supplies at walgreens! even smaller quantities to buy (We rarely use anything up before it goes out of date!)
One thing I learned as a girl scout you can sterilize a needle or tweezers with a match or candle. Just light put the tip in the flame for a few seconds at the steel is sterilized.
Sorry I keep commenting haha- I think one thing to note is that generic OTC drugs are just as good as name brand! I was raised by a nurse and she always bought generic, so I do too.
It REALLYYYYY grinds my gears when people are like "oh no ibuprofen doesn't work, I NEED Advil" . 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ I had this discussion with my MIL the other day about Aleve. I had to turn the bottles over to show her the ingredients were the exact same. I should have just let her pay the 3 extra bucks for the name on the box.
I love this. I grew up in a medical household. These are things I always have on hand even though my kids are grown and gone. Lol. Anyone else grow up with ipecac in their medicine cabinet lol
When I was growing up, my dad had a few universal cures for anything from sore throat to broken arm- gargle with salt water, take aspirin, put camphophenique on it. Nothing cures a broken bone like a stinky bug bite liquid. 😂
I found a whole bunch of thermometer at a Dollar Tree today. I actually never seen it before. It didn't say what type of battery it uses but only when the battery expires.
Woohoo! My med kit is almost like yours except I have a lot more bandages the guys around here are extra accident prone lol. I do have several essential oils I've added also because they seem to help my grands and I allot. Watching your video did remind me I need more childrens motren though so now it's on the shopping list... thanks!
The reason my household runs out of band aids is because my kids use it all on things like oh, I bumped my knee I need a bandaid. Kid you not, nothing is there. I stopped buying the themed ones and they still do it. I buy things when I run out like cold medicine, etc. My husband gets mad at me says those things expire and you're wasting money. It sure was nice when he got sick and my first aid kit was fully stocked. I have a full cabinet for everything. I do need to reorganize it though. This is a great list to have on just in case.
I was seriously having flashbacks when you were talking about the crushed up Tylenol in grape jelly. My mom did the same thing with me. She would use either grape jelly or applesauce. I still remember how bad it tasted 🤢
I was thinking of some of the things we used when we were little like mercurochrome. Mercy it’s a wonder we are not dead. I remember my Mom calling it BooBoo Paint like that made it better!
I called it "My-cure-combs" when I was little lol. I hated when my parents would put that stuff on my cuts. It burned and my skin would be stained for days.
Yup - this daughter of a nurse never had boo-boos or tummy aches. We had minor abrasions and gastro infections. And you never wanted the RED thermometer to come out of the cabinet!
Grab the checklist here 😀 mailchi.mp/jen-chapin/firstaidkit

I love these new budget friendly videos Jen. Economy is so hard right now.
Ingot it in a couple different sizes (widths) at Walmart.
What an interesting video. Thanks for sharing this. If you want to get rid of the packaging just cut off the back of the box with dosage and directions and put that in the box with the medicines. Nice job, Jen. 🌺

Love this! I put together a first aid kit for road trips using DT stuff. The smaller sizes are so perfect for travel.
I made one for travel too, all dollar tree stuff.
We also have a finger splint in ours!
This is a very thorough kit! Thank you. I have bought Midol and use it for headaches now. Works great. I also gave memories of my mom crushing Asprin (when you could still give it to children) between spoons adding a little sugar and water. I think Midol and Excedrin have the same ingredients in them. And also Goody powders. Acetaminophen, caffeine, and asprin I think.
This would make a great shelter in place medical kit.
Mercurochrome! 😊
Very practical and helpful. Thanks.
Definitely helpful to me!
I have a meds basket we use daily with vitamins and such but I wanting to put together a 1st aid kit for the bathroom.

😩😩
Great idea Jen! I need to organize our over the counter meds and see what expired.
Hi Jen. Great idea for a video. I try to keep as many things that you mentioned in my home. You have the best vidros. Thank you. Take care
Your post was so helpful. I just went to dollar tree two days ago but for my garden items but I will be getting my first aid items from there. You have been a great help to me. Can't wait for another post

we use the calamine lotion for bug bites too!

This was such a great video! I always try to keep these on hand. I would suggest if you get migraines often to keep excedrin at hand at all times.
Thanks for sharing I will be working on this this weekend. You forgot the disclaimer/ reminder to check the dates on medication
Xx
I thought this was an excellent topic for a video. I had no idea what should be kept in a first aid kit. Keep coming with those ideas! Thanks
Yes Jen this is so true. Our daughter just had her first baby and been wanting to send her one of these. It’s just me and my hubby and I still keep one of these kits stocked.

Con and (white) some colored @ Target!!
*Coband
If you have a feed store near you, they often sell Coban as "Vet wrap."
I have made similar kits when my sons went to college. Usually had to refill every year. When they called me complaining that they or their roomies were sick I reminded them of what they had. The only thing I added was a couple of handfuls of Chap Stick.
I really appreciated this video and will use it to make a kit. Thanks Jen!

I believe my mom used a Tackle Box or toolbox that had pop up shelves in it pretty neat well stocked
This video is so very helpful. I have 4 little grandchildren, so I will be putting this together very soon. Thank you so much.
Hiii Jen!!
Loving all your new videos!
Hope all is well with you and your family ❤️
I have kinda this kind of kit,,I need to replenish the bandaids soon,,,I need to check my dt for a few stuff that u have,,,thank you 🙂
Thanks for those. Some great information. I need to re-do my first aid kit.
My mom used to grind up aspirin and put it in apple sauce to get me to take it. It tasted horrible.
Thanks Jen! I appreciate all of your helpful tips!
Get the reusable ice cubes, then you don't have to worry about leaking ice bags or having to clean the ice bag.
Also the price dots are great to write the expiration date on. Easier to see anyway.
Great idea , was a little iffey about stuff from DT, but will put something together.
Thank you Jen this was very helpful.
Always always love your videos ...keep up the good work
God bless🤗
Such a great idea. I made something like this when my kids left the house for college. I am going to make them a new one since it’s been several years. The never have medicine at their houses. Thanks for the video and have a great day
Great idea Jen. I have most of this stuff all through the house. I am know going to put it together and keep in one place. Thanks for the idea
What about using regular feminine hygiene pads in place of the compression bandage
I love this week's content. Great, useful ideas. Thank you Jen!
Coban is available on Amazon for $5 for a 3" x 5 yds roll.
Dollar tree meds are awesome! We keep them stocked
Bandage Scissors, maybe a splint and couple of safety pins might be helpful. Good point about Coban to act as a tourniquet! Your video was excellent!
This is a great video Jen! Thank you so much appreciate it
Thanks Jen! Very helpful! Great video!
My daughter recently moved out and we prepared a similar pack for her. You are right, running to a pharmacy is the last thing you want to do when you are not feeling well.
I do this! Love seeing how you do things! I actually have lozenges in a candy dish in the winter!
Yes to preparing ahead of time. Makes me want to have instant hazmat powers! Btw, an oxymeter is also good to have these days. (Definitely not available at DT though 😉)
Imagine the poor pharmacy workers who see stuff like that everyday…
My parents are both registered grad school nurses and when my brother, sister and I respectively left home they made us a hugeeee kit like this to have at our apartment and I'm now 35 and it has followed me for this whole time! Of course I replace things as they expire but still.
This was very helpful and thank you for the printout! Are you doing any kind of snack spread for the Chiefs game this Sunday?😃
I'd use a closable container for in the car
Thanks, Jen! 🙂
Top notch, very informative, Jen !! Great Job !!

Wonderful video 👏🏽👏🏽 Very informative. Thank you 😊
I found a whole bunch of thermometer at a Dollar Tree today. I actually never seen it before. It didn't say what type of battery it uses but only when the battery expires.
OMG YES- The grape jelly! I remember that well, I had to take asthma meds. Could be why I don't like grape jelly now...
My grandma put Bactine on everything. It was her version of the windex cure from My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
That was hilarious! My boyfriend is like that with Lysol spray. "just spray it"😆😆
Woohoo! My med kit is almost like yours except I have a lot more bandages the guys around here are extra accident prone lol. I made a similar kit for my daughter when she headed off to college.
Thank you so much for this!
Best video for the perfect time!!!
I was seriously having flashbacks when you were talking about the crushed up Tylenol in grape jelly. My mom did the same thing with me. She would use either grape jelly or applesauce. I still remember how bad it tasted 🤢
Very helpful. Thank you
Great idea!
Thanks so much for this!!!!!
What a great video- thanks for sharing
The DT often has thermometers plastic covers they go out of stock fast!
This is really helpful :) much better than the million random things floating around the hall closet like I have.
Really liked this. Gonna go thru what I have on hand, then go to dollar tree for rest. Thank you! Ps. What’s your opinion on expired meds. Candy
Omggg so amazing! Thank you 🙏
Great tips, thank you
I was thinking of some of the things we used when we were little like mercurochrome. Mercy it’s a wonder we are not dead. I remember my Mom calling it BooBoo Paint like that made it better!
Hehe my aunt called mercurochrome Monkey Blood. No wonder I’m a little warped.
I did the mercurochrome dance and my mother would yell at me
I called it "My-cure-combs" when I was little lol. I hated when my parents would put that stuff on my cuts. It burned and my skin would be stained for days.
Great vlog thanks for sharing it
Great video!
Greta video. Was surprised no Paracetamol? Do you not use this in the US?
I think Tylenol is a brand name for paracetamol
Same as Tylenol
Yup - this daughter of a nurse never had boo-boos or tummy aches. We had minor abrasions and gastro infections. And you never wanted the RED thermometer to come out of the cabinet!

Chicken pox I remember that lotion too lol 😂
Thank you
Awesome video
