Reviewing the NEW Joying 10.1" Android 10 Head Unit With Apple CarPlay and Android Auto!

- Today I am doing a quick review of the brand new Joying JY-UQS10N4 Android 10 head unit with a massive 10.1" 1280x800 LCD, built-in Android Auto, and Wireless Apple Carplay in my 2009 BMW 335i. If there's anything you want more information on please leave a comment below.
This head unit runs a new UIS7862 1.8GHz 8-core processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB Flash Memory. It adds 5GHz WiFi and has both a SPDIF and optical digital audio outputs.
NOTE: It appears that they now offer this with 4G LTE as an add-on option

@@stavencapp one thing I've learned in my 25 years in car audio is that price means very little. There is crap in all price ranges and good shit in all price ranges. Now as far as android based head units I've found that Joying makes some of the best. Pioneer, Kenwood etc do not make units with nearly as many options even in the $1,200 models. Now if you don't care about being able to surf the web or use apps like youtube or need a built in dsp then yes there are better units out there. Pioneers units have a better flow and are much more streamlined. You could also use a tablet with car audio software and a separate dsp unit to do everything the Joying does but that will run you dbl the price. The most important thing for a head unit is the quality of the signal it creates as long it does this well, which the Joying does, then you can add it to any overall build from high end to basic. The features the unit has then just become personal taste. The model I will be using for the build I mentioned in my first post has a 13.3" screen and the whole screen rotates from landscape to portrait mode which really gives the wow factor my customer is looking for.
@@mixnation79 These units in my experience don't last long. The soldering isn't great and as you know cars in some areas have extreme temperature swings.
As always YMMV. The good part is they are quite inexpensive. Maybe the newer ones are better quality.

Unfortunately life has really gotten in the way over the last eight months so I've not had the time to work on the channel. I'm *hoping* to get back to it soon. As for rooting and ROM's you should check out the Android Auto forum on XDA
Great concise reviews, looking forward to your in depth one. I understand that Joying have locked down the bluetooth, so it is unlikely my current bluetooth OBD will work with it. I would be interested to know if the same is true for the DAB+ adapter. Joying's one is at least twice the price of and identical looking generic unit. DAB+ works great here in the UK shame they don't build it in instead of having to use one of the USB ports.
I don't have DAB+ here so I can't offer any opinions about it. Unfortunately life got in the way with over the last eight months so I've not been able to put time into the channel to get that next video put out.
Great video. I just installed the 8” single din version in my Civic hatchback. Was looking for your deep dive video of the unit but can’t find it anywhere. Did you happen to post it or still in the works?
I have a fully loaded in jeep for two years now I had one issue with mic on phone. My fav feature is the mechanic mode where you can disable video safety features.
Excellent introduction. Can I ask what is the maximum SD card capacity it can support (read/write)? I do agree that it would be great if the screen can be tilted.
I installed the 9" wt knobs running android 10 version in my camry SX 2012.
I only have one suggestion. That is when i am playing bluetooth music and i launch the music or video app, my music stops. It is a little annoying since I'm just browsing. It would be good if the Bluetooth music continues to play until i Press play on music or play a video.

How did you deal with the external microphone installation?
I cover it in my older 8" unit install video, but I just ran it up behind the A-pillar trim. I actually purchased a retrofit microphone for the BMW from Kufatec that installs in the factory microphone location. www.kufatec.com/en/
Thank you for your honest and thorough review. I have my eye on the model for the CRVs. One curious question. I noticed on your front display you have the temperature displayed in Celsius. Can that be changed to Fahrenheit? Because I noticed you checked Fahrenheit in your setup but it still showed Celsius.
Do you mean the temperature displayed in the status bar? In my case, the head unit pulls that temp from the car's thermometer. The units do switch to Fahrenheit, however the "C" doesn't change to an "F."

I find it very interesting as most of the new units recently launched. I've got a order a teyes unit which 6gb ram, 128gb storage.
I noticed that Joying have upgraded the 10.1" screen to 1920x1200 resolution, which is pretty amazing

A new video from John Nguyen on a Dasaita unit indicates that Wireless Android Auto now works on units that had been sold as Wired AA, only. Any chance your Joying can do Wireless AA, too?
I've not tried wireless but I think he's using Headunit Reloaded to pull that off.
Hi Matthew, how well would you say it withstands heat? I live in Las Vegas and summers concern me in regard to the lifetime of the unit in 120°f of heat.
How do you get updates to software or firmware? Do you use pc and then download to head unit, or do you use head unit wifi? Also where do place.thr 4g antenna?

Hey Matthew, great review. Ended up purchasing one of these units and it seems to work great. The screen is definitely too bright at night. What did Joying provide as a fix for this? I reached out to their support and they recommended installing a third party dimming app. Was hoping for a fix that would work when my head lights would come on instead of relying on a third-party app.

The day/night setting, assuming it's connected to the car properly, can be set in Settings -> General -> Backlight Control. It can be either time controlled or "small light control" which means it will switch when you turn on your headlights. ua-cam.com/video/eOP-XFMWaZE/v-deo.html
For the minimum brightness, you can change it by going into the factory menu (password 3368) then go to the Backlight Current Adjustment (password 5768) imgur.com/a/dfYheae
There you can adjust your minimum value. Be careful though, if you drop it down too far the backlight will shut off. I found that 31 was the very minimum I could go, however this will probably vary between units. Also, when the backlight is set very close to the absolute minimum, you may notice a slight flickering on the screen. A value of 35 for me makes that go away.
I have a 2010 328i and I’m not sure if I have a logic 7 system. I heard it’s hard to install a stereo. I want to install this unit you’re reviewing but I don’t want to waste my money if I can’t. Another question does this unit come with the decoder for the steering wheel function or is it separate? Thanks I’m advance
Matthew have you compared this to the Ototo S8 gen 2 with similar specs?
I am looking at an 8" unit for a 91 Benz 300sl and a 10 is too large. The Joying is not quite as long which is good BUT seems to have only up and down install flex where the Ototo allows me to set it slightly angled side to side and can't it out a little too.
For me screen clarity in the sun with the top down is an issue as well as steering wheel controls,these old guys have no canbus. Both companies have controls available. Boss makes a perfect floating/,adjustable screen but the specs on audio, and screen are not all that great,they need to upgrade the screen and processor.

In your other video you showed the screen is visible with polarized Sunglasses on. Does this screen work the same way?
I also wonder if the previous versions with the buttons on the side work with polarized Sunglasses. No buttons are not an option for me ;)
Let me answer my own question: I have bought a Joying 9" version with buttons on the side. The screen is an IPS display which works with polarized sunglasses.

Yes it does. You have to have either the dim wire connected or a CAN decoder box, just like any other aftermarket head unit.

Great review! Really considering this for my setup. I wanted to ask about the bluetooth restrictions you mentioned. Do you think it is something software related that makes it unable to connect to certain devices? I am really hoping to use something like this with my jb4 bluetooth. I also wanted to ask if you considered using a dash kit like the scosche BW2338B. It looks like this may be a cleaner solution. Appreciate your help!

The Bluetooth on all of these units, from various manufacturers, is locked down. You won't be able to use it with the JB4 unless something changes, and I unfortunately don't really see that happening.
I personally didn't use that dash kit because it was off centered and I wanted the screen to be centered, especially with its size.

Hi, i just had a couple of questions about it. Can i install spotify on it? And also is it possible to play music on my phones spotify through bluetooth? If so, does the bluetooth automatically connect when i turn it on and whilst using bluetooth can i use maps without the music stopping?

I believe so. Looking at the PCB it looks like the signals that go to the internal amplifier chip also branch over to the RCA outputs. I can't say for sure though so you may want to reach out to Joying.

This video was made awhile ago but hoping you can help me out. I’ve got one of these for my Ram 1500 and for whatever reason my screen setup doesn’t seem to be like what yours is in the video. I can’t find certain settings and I’m not able to modify my Home Screen with new apps. Any recommendations? Internet does not have a lot of info and I don’t have my user manual
Have you tried Car Launcher on this? Curious how it runs. It appears they are out of the 10.1 inch screens but they have the 11.6. I plan on putting it in a custom console in a 68 F100 and don't have steering wheel controls but like the screens with no soft buttons on the side. I'm hoping to use the soft volume slider widget of Car Launcher to control the volume. Will a bluetooth remote control work like maybe a Fire TV Remote?

Yes you can. When you swipe down from the top one of the options is to turn the screen off. It will turn back on when you touch the screen again.
I like this too much last week install in my car super but there is no on off switch just screen off when u touch a little he wakeup again .

Is it possible to add or embed our own software application over the Android operating system in order to control newly added subsystems through a USB port? Is it possible to add a new USB driver to Android OS so that we can control outputs and monitor inputs of our own hardware through USB?

Do you still use this radio? How are you liking it so far, especially with the lack of volume knobs? I know you like them from the previous stereo and I'm a volume knob guy too, but I'm worried that not having volume knobs will annoy me, but I may adjust to not having one just fine.
Overall I'm still liking the unit. I do miss the volume knob or dedicated soft button but I've adapted. Having the steering wheel controls is the only real saving grace but it's still not as nice as the knob, especially if you're wanting to mute when in a different application so you can't easily hit the pause button.

Ah, I didn't think about that because my car doesn't have a mute button on the steering wheel and they can't be remapped

Yes, the play store comes by default. As for the launcher, I imagine you could use any 3rd part launcher to make it look however you want, but I can't verify that.
What did you need for wiring adapters? What dash kit did you use? I have the same car

As for the wiring harness, I used the one I had from my previous Joying Android 8.1 unit. They sell vehicle specific harnesses that include the CAN decoder box (probably about $60) but you'll have to email them about it because I don't see it on their website. I know it's included with vehicle specific head units so they certainly make it. That harness is what makes it all plug and play. NOTE this will not work if you have the Harmon Kardon / Logic7 system. Is there a 7" 2din HU with the same UIS 7862 processor?
I have a camera button similar to the touch assistant button in mine. It’s the newest 9 inch version for Nissan. Any idea how to turn that button off? Also how to wire my reverse camera properly?
I haven't seen this camera button so I'm not sure what to tell you. The OEM camera's don't generally integrate into aftermarket radios. My car didn't come with one so I purchased an aftermarket camera which is hooked up to power from the reverse lights (through a relay) and the RCA just goes to the head unit.

That was a third party dash kit. This particular unit only comes with the radio body and the screen but you can purchase a number of vehicle-specific units that come with a dash kit already integrated.
so i am looking at buying a new head unit for my 2016 Nissan rogue, what brand would you recommend. looking at joying, idoing, dasaita, and a few other companies. i know most if not all are just a rebrand, but would like to buy from a good company
I've been happy with Joying but don't have experience with the other manufacturers. I would look at forums like XDA to see what experiences people have had.

i got the same head unit my question is that i put a att sim card in my sim card slot and when i connect android auto to my headunit and want to play pandora or yt music it only plays one song and it disconnects from the internet nore the android auto how can i keep it connected at all times so i can play pandora or what ever when i am going to work at night let me no please

What third party apps are you wondering about? It has the play store and you can install most things from there, however I have noticed that Netflix and Hulu don't work.

I just installed and tried MOBDRO and it worked, at least in my quick test of trying a movie stream.

Hi, I just got this and connected the reverse camera but not working. How were you able to make it work? Also how do you connect to CarPlay? I though you just plug in usb.. I’ve added the app and still doesn’t work
The reverse camera needs power and video connections. I believe there's also a setting to enable auto-switching but mine was enabled by default. Otherwise I'm not sure how much help I can be.
Do you know of a unit like this one that has capacitive buttons? I would be okay with this unit but can't find it anywhere. Thanks for your help!

Did you have any issues with the backup cam? I got it installed with a canbus but I only get a black screen. It doesn’t say “no signal” or anything like that.

How is the phone calls? Do you use Internal or External mic?
This unit doesn't have the integrated mic so I use an external one. I actually used a third-party microphone that fully integrates into the OEM location so I can't comment on their microphone quality. However, the call quality is acceptable according to people I talk to. Not great but not bad either.

If you are using a amp the deck has no impact on sound .
I'm not sure what Dino is talking about because the DSP functions work on both the speaker and rca outputs. For me, the main draw of the Joying is its digital output. the Coaxial out can connect directly to many DSP units. They have way more control over the sound plus more output channels. Most of the Joying DSP only have 16 band EQ with no separate controls for left and right. They also only have a basic high pass for the main speakers and a low pass for the sub. I don't know the slopes, but its very basic. It does have 4 channel time alignment which is good. If this is all acceptable for your needs then you will enjoy it. For more control, an external DSP is the answer.
u had the ignition on all the time on video?u can´t install a wire to no use the ignition??
You could if you wanted to but all aftermarket head units generally use the switched 12V wire to handle turning on and off. Otherwise you'd risk killing your battery.
Can you do multifunction programming for your steering wheel buttons? Like have one button do something when you tap and do something else when you long press?
Not on the BMW. The integration with my car does not allow for custom button programming but that may be different for other vehicles.

Any idea how to change the temperature from Celsius to degrees on the home screen
The factory widget doesn't actually work. In the status bar at the top there is no way to switch the C to F however it reads in F from my car's temperature sensor. Rather annoying IMO, but not the end of the world.
Do you know if I can use the jb4 app with the otg cable? That will literally be what determines if I'm going to buy this head unit or not.....
I don't know but I would imagine you can... One of the USB ports is listed as USB OTG but I don't own a JB4 so I can't test it.

Yes you can change the wallpaper, it comes with a few different wallpapers or you can download your own.

Thanks for the video. Just installed mine a few days ago. I removed my sim from my ipad, put it in an adapter, then in the 4G connector. It recognizes it, but I don’t have wifi. Any idea?

Did this have the same issue as the 8 inch. When the unit resets, it switches everything back to Metric? Like Km/hr, Celsius and so forth?

I Hurd the rca outputs voltage is like 1 volt And bad distortion, therefore need to use a line driver to correct the problem, how does this unit hold up to aftermarket amplifiers?
Typically its 2v while the sub out is only 0.5v. They have a line driver built in through their amp. Use the speaker outputs. Kicker makes a cheap line out converter for $30 that can reduce the voltage further. So there's no real need for a line driver.
Have you been able to get streaming apps working on this? Netflix, Sling, Hulu etc, do not work. Seems to be some kind of DRM issue.
u need to download an old version of Netflix (apk) for it to work
@@sterlinbethel4666 Yes, but then only addresses netflix. Plus the version is so old it is missing lots of features like downloading movies for offline watching. All the other streaming apps still do not work.
It would’ve been nice to have seen the actual unit before install and seeing the entire casing if it double din or single does it have a sub output or just a simple set. Of output rcas things like that would make for a better video

There is a Netflix APK that you can side load. I have it working on the Joying 11.6. Just Google it.

I just ordered this unit the other day but had a question. You mentioned there's no SIM card slot. Can you use a phone to hotspot and connect to the unit by USB or does it connect by Wifi? Does Apple CarPlay connect by Bluetooth? Is it too blinding when you're driving at night or is the Eye Comfort mode enough for the drive to be okay?
I just checked the product page today and it looks like they're offering the 4G as an up-charge option for $15. I'm not sure when they started that but it wasn't there a couple of weeks ago.
I use my phone to create a mobile hotspot and connect to it with WiFi if I'm using just the head unit. If you're using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay then it's not an issue because all data is handled through the phone anyway.
I don't have an iPhone so I can't speak to how wireless carplay works. I have only ever tested it in wired mode. I would reach out to Joying for further clarification on this.
The display is too bright at night with the factory minimum brightness on the unit I received. This can be changed in the "Backlight Current" setting screen. I'll be adding that into my next video but the short version is that you have to go into factory settings (code 3368) then into the "Backlight current" setting (code 5768) and you can set the range. BE CAREFUL! If you set the minimum brightness too low it may cut out on you while you're trying to adjust it and the screen goes black. You can recover, but it's difficult. Also, going too low can cause a bit of a flicker in the backlight. Eye comfort is just a nice added bonus.
@@MatthewVaras I asked them about the dongle. I got a response saying it was $200 for the dongle since I ordered the headunit from Amazon. They recommended I cancel the Amazon order and reorder through their website but I think it’s already being shipped and I’m not sure if I trust shipping it back and/or if I have to pay for shipping the item back.
Not sure what to tell you there. If your phone can do a hotspot and/or you plan on using CarPlay or Android Auto then the 4G isn't a big deal, especially since you have to pay for an extra SIM card. It's probably so expensive because it's hardware installed in the unit so they'd probably send you a full head unit body without a screen.

@@valentinedpg I think 4g module might actually be built in to the unit so I’d need a new unit instead of just a dongle. But turns out the bands don’t really work with my network so it works out for me.

Android Auto is run by your phone. You can still use head unit apps in the background when using Android Auto.
@@MatthewVaras oh ok thank you, have you had any issues with android auto connecting when using both usb ports? i can only get it to connect when unpluggin my dab+ adapter..
@@kristian4559 Hrm, I'm not sure about that. We don't have use DAB+ in the USA so I have no way to test that. Have you tried swapping the USB ports? One of them is USB OTG and I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, however I wouldn't expect it to. Sorry I can't be of any more help.

Want to call any one then music jumped to 36 then suddenly 22
I check power volume setting
And also volume balance setting . But still too low volume on call even full .
Call stop then music suddenly goes to high . I cant understand

I'm on my second joying unit the first one was good witch was the older version of the the 10.1 screen. Now I got the 9.7 screen version with the rotating screen witch is a big upgrade from the old 10.1 version.

You can get an aftermarket steering wheel control, you can touch the speaker icon at the top which will bring up the Android volume slider or, according to another commenter, you can get a third-party volume widget. You can also get variants of the radio with different screen sizes that will have buttons built into the unit itself.
