Same discussions we've had with Löw in Germany during his tenure. 2008 runner-up, 2010 third place, 2012 semi-final. Never really was a big fan of his managment but eventually he's won the world cup in 2014. If you had Tripper or Walker at LB in Football Manager wouldn't you play them as IWB. With Foden staying left Winger until the IWB moved inside and could feed the Winger cutting in. This happened around the time of the disallowed goal.

my biggest problems with how Southgate manages the England team are.
1 - agree with Luke about Shaw going, this was pointless and should of taken a fit left back like Mitchell from Palace
2 - what was the point of taking Mainoo, Wharton and Palmer when they aren't playing enough even though they were in incredible form end of season especially Wharton and even the likes of Eze and Gordon - those 2 showed more in a small amount of minutes then Saka and Foden (foden shouldn't be out wide)
3 - I personally don't think he has ever really shown flexibility in the style or formation we play. don't need a holding player, our defence has been the best part in our 3 games

He has created more chances than literally anyone else on the England team in a position that 'he isn't comfortable in'
Not saying he should be playing in midfield, he should be playing over Walker at RB because he offers so much more than he does going forward and is serviceable defensively, and yeah like you guys said, play a LW for God's sake, get people running in behind
Another thing, if Shaw isn't fit, play Gomez over Trippier, he proved this season that he is a damn good LB for a team that was fighting for the title this season, and he offers a threat going forward while being defensively solid

@@Nasko00so what's the best position for trent? He's not the best defensively out of all the available RB. He can create chances, but didn't do well as a CM. If England are expecting offensive services from him, i don't think RB is his best position. Especially with Southgate's tactic.

You play him at RB and have one of the midfielders come in and support him. Liverpool did it for years and he was the main creative force in a side that won every trophy they could, got to 3 champions league finals and got 90+ points on 3 separate occasions in the league

Central Midfielder: Rice, Trent, Bellingham, Foden and Kane.
So basically no room to play passed for a playmaker. Even Toni Kroos wouldnt do anything in such a setup.
No one to use the room left behind by f.ex Kane.
You mentioned in the video that Kane doesnt have any touches in the 18-yard box.
But if he continue to drop as deep as he is doing he wont get those touches.
Whenever England is in a position to cross the ball in Kane is nowhere close to the 18-yard box.

Great stuff. Reminds me a lot of our last few years with Flick. Every player out of position, not doing what they are supposed to. England is just unlucky because the players are so good that you get the results anyway. Imo Kane needs to stop getting so deep, than you just play like Germany. Kane/Havertz, Wirtz/Foden, Palmer/Musiala, Bellingham/Gündogan. Instead of overlapping left, you overlap on the right since Foden roams around a lot. Walker duos with Foden. If you need something different you sub Saka for Foden and TAA for Walker.

CB - Stones
CB - Guehi
LB - Shaw if fit if not Walker
CM - Bellingham but with the license to go forward

I would switch Trippier and Walker. Trippier can overlap Saka or Palmer on the right to put balls on the strikers head and is good enough defensively. Walkers pace can get him past defenders on the overlap on the left with enough time and space to cut in if he needs it or to sit back for cover.
Then Gordon in on the left wing. Mainoo in the middle with Rice. Foden or Bellingham as a 10. Both should be good enough for that if the wings open up the space in the middle of the pitch. I am also tempted to put Watkins up top but would probably stick with Kane for a start and see how the team adjusts to the other changes.
Id actually play saka at left back against slovakia, we dont need a defensive player, we need someone bombing up the wing and its a job hes done for arsenal. Rest of the defence the same, id drop foden and bring in gordon then have palmer on the right. Mainoo for gallagher is a no brainer. Full team

One of the biggest issues I felt has always been not rotating and subs too late. By the end of the tournament players have played eighteen nearly every minute or not at all and it makes it an impossible task

( Kane should be middle) I’d allow Kane to drop deep when necessary, letting the 3 attacking mids to make runs beyond him.
Walker can bomb the left although I’m a bit hesitant to have him out there, I’d still be willing to put Trippier in.
TAA putting balls over the top to a Foden/Gordon. Or finding a deep Kane who can look for runners.
Mainoo joining the attack and playing 1 2’s when safe to do so.
Foden and Palmer occasionally switching position to keep the opponents guessing. I’d even be tempted to switch their position altogether, but I wanna see Foden in the 10 first.
Gordon and Palmer finding a balance between making runs and cutting in, the main issue this squad has is being so 1 dimensional.
Saka and Bellingham have to be dropped as they are by far our 2 worst players and offer NOTHING. Bellingham looks lost, Saka will do a run and then cut back and pass back, offers nothing to this team.
I wouldn’t even be mad if Kane was dropped for Watkins.
Bowen should come on in 55th/60th min if we are struggling as he has the legs and strength to terrorise late game

Disagree about Trent. Yes Trent should play at RB but he hasn't been nearly as bad as you are suggesting at CM. He was England's most creative and England looked much worse when Gallagher played. He was doing well defensively as well. It's not Trent's fault Foden and Saka are allergic to making runs behind the defense when making those line-breaking passes is what Trent excels at. I guarantee you Trent would've already created a goal if it was Gordon on the left rather than Foden.
Trent is the scapegoat.
I disagree, TAA is not an international standard defender, he’s probably ok against weak opposition , but up against any top winger, he’s rinsed time and time again. We see that in the PL nearly every week. He’s overhyped because of one corner taken quickly and the fact he can do the basics of passing well.

The wingers need to be running in behind and trying to cut in because Kane will drop back, he's a really good passer, he hasn't got the pace to run past a backline from near the halfway line.
My England starting eleven Pickford,Trent,Gaehi,Stones, Walker,Bellingham (if match fit),Rice,Palmer,Foden,Gordon, Kane. For me that starting team could win you any competition and yet Southgate's lacking the balls to use the players he has in the right way.
Very good team but boring to look on. There must be some some good left footed in the Premier league? Maybe have Trent as a left back or switch with Walker? I would go for 4-2-3-1 maybe have Saka on the left and Palmer on the right Foden in AMC. Rice as a cleaner on the midfield and Bellingham box to box. Kane as a striker. For me in a 26 man squad I would've taken Mitchell. However I would've also probably played Gomez at LB over Trippier because Gomez has played a lot of the season there. My team would be(FM24 positions)..

I agree with omega Luke and omega dad!! I play football, I play Fm and I understand a little bit of the game!! I’m from Portugal and I feel both Portugal and England are one of the most talented nations in the world but we don’t have a coach that can do a good job with a great squad with a lot of egos!! England didn’t have a nice football, pleasant to watch and neither Portugal!! We won two games but the games were weird, we didn’t have any good changes and yesterday loosing against Georgia was the last strand!! Same with England!!
But again is easier said than done, and nations are getting harder to beat
Thing is a team of talented individuals doesn't guarantee a talented team....
The squad selection was off from the start, it shouldn't be fitting as many talented players into a starting xi as possible it should be choosing the best xi that has each player in their best position.
Squad of 26 players, 2 x each outfield position 3x goalie with 3 additional sports, 1 versatile defender who can cover all or most of backline (Joe Gomez) 1 versatile mid that can cover all mid positionds and a 3rd striker
Then start with best starting xi if someone's not performing swap them for the no.2 in that position simple
Also i think slovenia 0-0 england was what I predicted i just thought slovenia defense was really good so i thought england should have gotten 7 points
England have been lacklustre and boring, only positive we can take is consistency at least! xD I have to be fair though, for years everyones been saying "We need to play Trent in midfield", I've even been one of those people, now that it's happened and not works everyone backfires saying it's a poor decision. Sounds rogue, but at the end of the day, apart from the defence and rice, no one has warranted their place in comparison to the attackers. It’s been extremely boring and as you both said, too predictable. Give these players the license to attack and show what we’ve been missing. Mainoo even at 19 is a natural in that midfield to dictate the play and get us going. Palmer and Gordon want to get forward and attack plus Watkins’ pace and pressing ability is desperately needed to get us further up the pitch

The issue is that it looked like England played to qualify from the group and not to win it. There isn’t a problem with this however we need to do something different in the RO16 as that’s where the performance becomes important for us

The 2 goals we have scored have both come via deflections which without them wouldn't have eneded up perfect for Bellingham and kane. We lack creativity because we are so predictable.

To be honest I think Trent would work. But you need gordan on the left. He created the most chances in the group stage for us despite playing like 127 minutes. If gordan was on the left it would change the game as he would make them runs in behind for Trent to perfect a pass to him. Spending so long passing between the back four and Pickford will be punished against teams that are even slightlly better than our group opponents. I hate Southgate's ultra conservative approach. Dan Burn- Not good enough and probably not better than Trippier out of position
Lewis Hall- No England experience
Tyrique Mitchell- Not good enough and probably not better than Trippier out of position
Branthwaite, Mitchell (way better in a position he’s natural to playing than an experienced player out of position who can’t attack down the left). Hell, even Leif Davis would have been a better option
@@OmegaLukeGaming Branthwaite isnt a LB and he's good defensively but pretty bad on the ball, why Tarkowski does all the on the ball progressive passing for Everton. Leif Davis is a shout but still untested at top level, but Mitchell is horrendous. Again, no England experience for either, he would have needed to take them for prior fixtures to bed them in.
@@granth1238 branthwaite can play left back and is left footed. Never underestimate how important it is to have your stronger foot on the side of going down the wing to build up attacks. Instead you have two players who cut back inside & the opposition can read it like a book and press better with this knowledge

Colwill would probably have been best bet as he's had some experience there last season but again, quite poor attacking wise. LB is a big problem area for England. Gomez would probably be best bet in terms of who's been selected.
Rico Henry or Alfie Doughty, both had good seasons and offer something different (former has pace and attacking mindset, latter can deliver fantastic crosses). But Southgate's probably never heard of them!

England fans have been the same at every tournament for my entire life. The manager is to blame or the players are knackered or one player gets scapegoated or there is some mystical force that stops them "gelling". Anything other than except that maybe, just maybe, the players aren't as world class as the media tells you they are.
Even my Poland, which has a not very good squad played better than England...

I'm portuguese and I think we are in the same situation. 2 managers that have a Ferrari on their hands but lack the skills and bravery to use it at full speed. I think they are outdated and really don't understand why current main teams play 3-2-5 on attack. They copy it but completely miss the point. On the other side you have teams like Spain, Austria and Switzerland, on those teams you see that the players know the plan, they know what they want to do with and without the ball.

When Safegate said that about Phillips I just lost complete interest in this England side as long as he is in charge - he’s been pathetically negative ever since we had that crazy high goal scoring game against Kosovo in the qualifiers a few years back. Lastly, I’ve had enough of the players and him saying stuff like ‘just block out the noise’, ‘we aren’t listening to the outside’, - as if they are like these peasants haven’t got a clue. Honestly the best course of action would be to move Trent to RB, move Jude alongside Rice, move Foden to the 10 and start Gordon at the left. The defense has looked incredible anyway so I don't think you get hurt that much by dropping Walker.

I've never rated Southgate. He took a good Borough team and got them relegated in the only club job he's ever had.
