I think my favorite bit of characterization for the cast comes at the very end when Andi is destroying the mansion. she starts out smashing all the glass artwork and the rest of the cast joins in, including Miles, because to them it's just a game. it's just them getting out a bit of aggression without long lasting consequences because it feels good. but then she keeps going, she smashes more and more expensive work, and the rest of the characters start getting genuinely uncomfortable. they don't ACTUALLY want to disrupt anything, they want the illusion of disruption, of resistance. shattered glass is messy, but it's a benign mess that can be quickly swept up. you can't un-burn the house down.

When she started smashing the glass, I thought she was trying to see which of the sculptures was made of Klear (or at least to scare the rest of the group into thinking it). Making a sculpture out of "magical disruptive genius chemicals" seems like something that someone as narcissistic as Elon (sorry, "Miles") would do...

Very good point. Miles talks about being a disruptor but certainly doesn't want HIS life to be disrupted. He started out wanting to break the system, but now he is rich he is the system, and is as conservative as any of the old-money types from the first film.

    • @danieldrummond3016
      @danieldrummond3016 Рік тому +32

Agreed! I've been thinking a lot about that 'smashing' scene -- Andi smashes the glass (something small), then continues through the other art pieces as the others join in. But when she gets to the Mona Lisa -- "THE thing", as Miles would say -- no one wants her to destroy it and they all flee or try to stop her. She's the only true disruptor, the only one willing to get up to that line regarding Miles' 'system' -- and then cross it. That's why I love how she gives Miles the crossed 'double bird' just before she goes after the painting, just as he did when he explained his 'disruptions' to Blanc earlier on. Kudos.

I think a big part of Blanc's very visible frustration over Miles was that at the beginning Blanc said he needed a "great case." He ended up with two very very simple ones.

One thing that should be mentioned - the main players’ relationship to Peg; the stressed out, overworked lackey of Birdie; the plain-Jane wallflower who always knows where the fire extinguishers are. She has obviously been to many of these events held by Miles, yet when she speaks to him directly, he can’t even remember her name. Everybody gets their own monogrammed glass with their favourite beverage - except Peg, who gets tossed a paper cup without even being acknowledged (side note - later on, she’s writing her name on that cup, as if she’s desperate to be like the entitled asshats around her.) She is one of the truly competent and efficient people in this film, but she’s not one of the rich ‘disruptors,’ so she never even gets heard. She obviously has enough influence over Birdie that Birdie feels the need to hide her emergency phone like a child, and can put her point to Birdie about the statement Miles wants her to sign concerning the sweatshops. Yet, in the end, her own employment and income is entirely dependent on Birdie being a beautiful idiot.

@@CaptainVideo1960 then who would be holding Birdie accountable? Who would WE relate to? Her importance was the fact that she was underutilized. That's literally the theme of her character and almost EVERY assistant who works in or around Hollywood. To make her more important would completely negate that-- she isn't a mastermind, a disruptor, or main character. She's just there, struggling, and in the end her future is as ambiguous as Birdie's as it should since Peg-- herself-- is not the type to be as extreme as Andie or Helen. To see a gradient of women, to distinguish between ambition vs greed vs narcissism, to enjoy the nuance of that, I feel the movie was successful in abundance.

    A few observations:
-Another way Miles shows us who he is is in his choice of words. When he's introducing Klear, he doesn't say something like "I want to make sure this planet is livable for future generations" or "I want to free the world from petro-states' shenanigans and reduce the possibility of conflict" or anything. No, it's all about the legacy HE wants, how HE wants to be spoken of in the same breath as the Mona Lisa. It's all self-centered language, not other-centered.
-It's interesting to contrast the "disruptors" with Blanc. He's well-off and has celebrity friends, but his friends are in the creative arts, and seem kind, compassionate, and generous. Ironically, I made the same mistake as most of the characters while watching this movie. The whole time, I was waiting for the big reveal, the big detective speech that would reveal everything and wrap everything up in a neat little bow. When that speech came, however, that didn't happen. His goons stayed by his side because they had too much to lose. When Helen torches the place, I was left sorta dumbfounded, expecting something better, more sophisticated than what actually went down. Only after I watched this video did I realize that the whole movie was setting up that conclusion. I took the glass onion as a metaphor to be used in the context of it's mystery, not the movie's message as a whole. I was so focused on peeling back the layers, I didn't look to see that they were clear.

Lionel and Claire's rightfully freaked out reactions seem like overreactions the first time, just because of how cocky Miles is being. But, when you see it again and you know that Miles is just an idiot who doesn't understand anything, the first thought is "holy shit he just threw hydrogen gas in his own home, who DOES THAT he's so STUPID." Actually, that film reminded a lot of an Agatha Christie novel written in 1933. In which a rich man with a lot of enemies was so intelligently and effectively stabbed in a specific point in the neck everyone thought the murderer knew what he/she was doing (maybe a doctor even). In reality, the murderer was the most obvious person ever. Moreover, that person was a very silly, self-centered, simple but nice and confident person (who also took refuge in audacity) and just got really lucky, killing the man on the spot (then two other people who were getting in the way of his/her happy dreams) and nearly getting away with it. And at the end, rather than being upset he/she was found guilty, the remorseless murderer was more concerned about their future new posterity and hoping to get a lot of people attending his/her hanging. Yep... Human nature wouldn't change I suppose.

Edward Norton was exactly right for Not-Elon. Dave Bautista reminds me of swole influencers like the Liver King (who just had to admit to taking steroids). Kate Hudson, as you noted, was terrific in her role, which her mother would've played just as perfectly in a previous generation. And Janelle Monae deftly switched between essentially three roles: Andy, Helen, and Helen-as-Andy. It was just delightful. As an English teacher, I picked up on Not-Elon's malapropisms and outright made-up words right away, and so I knew he was a stuffed-shirt pseudo-intellectual from the start. It made me think about other pseudo-intellectuals who have somehow found audiences that hang on their every word, who have also convinced themselves that they're the real deal when, in fact, they're not.

One of my absolute favorite parts was not just how the mona lisa got burned, but that it was only helen who thought about doing it and only her who wanted to go thru with it. this isn't just an indictment of billionaires' place in our society, but of the whole "i'm all for BLM but please don't smash the windows of my favorite starbucks" crowd. Everyone at the party - the lesser 1% - knew miles was shit and were totally down for smashing *his* shit. But they didn't want the whole system to go. Of course, in the movie, the whole system was not destroyed. But I think the mona lisa, with all its high cultural significance, and the repetitive cuts to it that remind us how the whole room is designed to protect it, is clearly a stand-in for a broader critique of "the system" than just one billionaire being taken down. It's not about miles, it's about the whole apparatus that put the mona lisa on a pedestal in the first place and then lent it out to some asshole just because he had the money to do so.
If you want to protect the mona lisa, you failed at making a system that could do so, but valorizing it in the first place is already an indictment of how corrupt the system is in the first place.

What an amazing compelling movie this was,
You had Daniel Craig once again leading another mysterious murder mystery and he plays his role amazing in the movie as do all of the other actors/actresses who are Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista and Madelyn Cline just to name a few and they were all very good. This movie has a very good well thought out story to it and you get to learn about all of the different characters in the movie which is good and their are a couple of shocks and twists in the movie too which are interesting. Also their is a lot of good humour in this movie that is very funny I must of laughed quite a few times.
So what starts out as a fun murder mystery game on a private island turns into a real murder investigation that sets off all sorts of events which are very interesting throughout the movie you learn how everyone and everything is connected and you learn some truths and some lies too which made for a amazing movie. Do I think this was as good as the first one my answer yes I think it was as good as the first one I wouldn’t say better but equally as good each movie has their own really good things about it so yeah.

Unfortunately, this movie is nowhere near as good as the first one. Now, clearly Ben Shapiro made an absolure fool of himself with his Twitter rant about this movie, but it really wasn't that good.
I was quite impressed during my first viewing. But the second time? With all the knowledge available, so I can pay attention to detail, it was quite messy. The writing just wasn't that good.
      A) Everyone on the island has motive to kill Andi, right from the get go. The existence of the napkin is proof for their pugury.
      B) (minor detail): As a scientist I was hardcore triggered that they could carry around 'crystallized hydrogen' for that long. It would have evaporated almost immediately, unless it was either -260°C or something around 500-600 atmospheric pressure. Both of which would have killed everyone instantly.
      C) The timeframe of Andi's murder is completely messed up (they get very specific of what happens when multiple time, and it practically never adds up).
      D) Johnson doesn't trust the audience at all. Whenever a past scene is referenced, it HAS to be shown again. Even the scene where Blanc hands Helen the Hydrogen (a completely out of character decision btw "Well, I failed, how about you potentionally kill everyone in the room? Good luck."). We see him hand her the drink and something obscured (which obviously has to be the Hydrogen) alongside a direct reference to the Hydrogen. And then, not 10 minutes later, we see the exact same scene again, only this time we actually see the crystal. I felt almost insulted.
I could keep going, but you get the point.
That being said, it was fun, the message was well delivered and pretty unique, yet relevant and one the nose. The red thread of the Glass Onion as the metaphor of all metaphors works on (ironically) so many layers in this film.
It just feels like Johnson sacrificied a thought out mystery plotline (like Knives Out was) for the intricate metaphor.

So when Blanc asks could the box have been reset and sent, Bron immediately says hang on and then just repeats what Blanc just thought of as confirmed fact and then adapts to this new occurrence. (This is sourced in many places, probably the most telling is in Paul's book "Many Years From Now" where Paul says about "Glass Onion", "...it was his song, his idea...it was a nice song of John's.")
By the time of the recording of what we call the white album, the three main song writers of The Beatles were mostly working on their own.

I thought it was equal but not the same as Knives Out.
Although I was more emotionally entangled with Marta's story in the first film (and loving how the first sets us up with wanting Blanc to solve the mystery and then manipulates us into wanting the perpetrator to get away with it only to reveal there was still a mystery we were distracted from... the doughnut hole doughnut inside of the doughnut hole of the doughnut that was inside of the larger doughnut's doughnut hole), I found the second film more engaging by having fewer characters we spend more time with.
To explain, I was more emotionally invested in the first movie; but by having fewer characters in the second and letting us more time to get to know the suspects, I was more entertained by the ensemble. Plus the second movie was more entertaining in a humorous sense. In the end, the first movie was Marta's story where the second felt more like Blanc's (rather than "Andi's").
So, what I loss from the first film was made up for by other things gained; and it equaled out.
