@FilmSpeak I think the biggest thing the movie does so well compared to modern superhero films is that it doesn't take its world or characters for granted. We've become so desensitised to flying robots and ancient gods battling in famous cities because so many films just phone the world-building in. Very "they've seen this before, so they'll get it" energy. Constantine really takes its time to cement and sell its world and the characters that live in it. It never takes the audience for granted. It really wants you to believe in it. Couple that with some standout performances from some early 2000's icons that were just hitting their stride, and a surprisingly eerie score by the same guy who gave us the Pirates of the Caribbean score? Instant, cult classic perfection! 👌
I absolutely love this film. It’s just so freaking good. I revisit this one frequently, I think Keanu is kick ass, the concept is interesting, the lore is cool, the stakes are palpable, all the supporting characters are great. I haven’t watched a single John Wick film but I know I will revisit Constantine. I appreciate that you are making the case for it!

Constantine is one of my favorite movies of all time. Keanu plays an asshole really well, wish we had more than just Cyberpunk 2077 and Constantine to show for it.
A couple more great suggestions in this thread, plus I really can't name a movie he's been in where the VFX aren't decent (or dated in a charming way).
Personally, I think what makes this movie really good is that it allows you to digest the big scenes after they happen. It lets you really think about what just happened while trickling in the next few scenes so that you're not bombarded with too much.
Something I love about the casting of Reaves is knowing some of the most tragic experiences a human can undergo are experiences Reaves has had. The way he taps into the grief, the anger, the contempt, and the exhaustion of a man isolated in his experience of truly unfair circumstances that basically no one can relate to? Damn if that isn’t an actor playing himself.
As entertaining as Lucy in the TV series is, he is such a brat. This is suppose to be a creature as old as time, not a sarcastic adolescent angry at daddy. I will always enjoy Lucifer from Constantine.
At fifteen, I was not ready for this movie but I watched and was in awe by the end of it. Scared the shit out of me at first but learned to appreciate what used to scare me.
People think this movie is BORING!?! I’ve seen this movie enough times I stopped counting and I’ve found it to be a visual and emotional masterpiece every single time
Saw a little bit of this as a 9 yr old and fell straight to sleep. Couldnt understand it at all, i wasnt mentally aware enough to even comprehend the complex emotions being portrayed. Less than 20 years later and im back, wanting to watch the film and give it the absolute respect it deserves
If you're not jingling keys in front of the audience while making quippy one liners every five seconds you're not exciting enough for the modern audience.
Better DC movie than any of the actual DC movies. I love Constantine. Everyone involved was clearly invested in the project and the attention to detail is fabulous. I love hearing the director talk about the scene where twin Isabel dies and her pupils dilate, is an absolute joy. Hoping more people check it out with a sequel in the works 🤞🏻
Love this movie. Fell in love with Tilda Swinton as Gabriel. The end credit scene is a regular random image in my mind. I've re-watched Constantine more than a handful of times since I first saw it in the theatre.
Gabriel is such a perfect example of the villain being the "hero of their own story." Humanity should be grateful for the opportunity to be "worthy of his love." The entire plan makes perfect sense, from a twisted point of view.
One of my favorite movies…In my humble opinion, Keanu makes movies which speak to him. I don’t think that the public is always on his wavelength. Which is ok. And Keanu is such a generous guy he is fine with the criticism. He doesn’t have to worry about his legacy. I see that people are looking back at the films and TV shows from the last 20 years and watching them thru a new perspective. And I am here for it.
Wow a Constatine review was well overdue. It has struck me that through the memification of most of Keanu's actions, and his distinct method of playing introverted characters, people often regard to his craft as "bad acting" like you mentioned. Which sure, he's not the greatest actor of all time, but he's not the wet cardboard people think he is, especially in his delivery in the John Wick saga, playing off subtlety. And his sometimes stilted delivery seems quite natural for the character, who doesn't speak by words but his actions so it makes sense. People also tend to forget the dedication he puts into his stunts, which is the definitive reason John Wick became popular. Regardless, people argue whether his iconic roles like The Matrix and John Wick could have been so great with him replaced as the lead actor, and the answer being a definitive no warms my heart. He's such a nice guy, and not a lot of people know he's been through quite a lot through his life. He had to deal with the death of his best friend, unborn daughter and girlfriend, and yet he still remains one of the most supportive and wholesome people out there. He doesn't really deserve the hate he gets.
Hes done bad movies. Hes done great movies. He's never been talked about in a negative light from anyone on those sets. Think thats why we all grew to appreciate him. He was very genuine.
If I haven’t already watched Constantine a 1,000 times, this video essay would’ve sold me. Matter of fact. I’m bout to watch Constantine now. Great job… Keep up the good work.
I absolutely LOVE this movie! It truly is one of those hidden gems of hidden gems, but I love everything about this movie and it truly has stood the test of time and I love going back to it every once in a while to just relive the story telling and different take on the religious ideologies that we have in the world. It truly is remarkable.
This movie is a great depiction of how a character is written and acted. Peter Stormare, Gwendolyn Christie, and Tom Ellis are all the same character. I dont mean they all play Lucifer, I mean, they all play DCs Lucifer. A character that was modelled after David Bowie, and yet they've all brought something to the role.
Constantine was so awesome. It's a movie I can just pop in and watch whenever, anytime/anywhere. There were so many crazy scenes in that movie, like they were always doing some crazy shit. Such as when he needed to be left alone with the tub of water and the cat, or needed "The Chair", etc, you just never knew where the movie was going.
I loved Constantine when I watched it. After hearing your analysis, I can see why. It draws many parallels with my own spiritual journey. I rarely watch movies more than once. Going to have to give Constantine a second watch :)
I watched this movie as a teenager when it came out with my family and we all loved it. Never thought of it as boring. The world is masterfully crafted to point you feel like you live in it. Instant cult status for me since day 1.
I watched this movie in a chicago movie theater full of largely a black audience, They loved this movie, and in the end everybody applauded. My black people love keanu. I remember the running joke of almost kissing throughout the movie was especially a highlight amongst the audience and they clapped so hard when Angela flipped it on john and the subtle ending of him pulling what seemed to be a cigarette but turned out to be gum. I think we all knew we had watched something special.
This film is definitely in the Top 10 Dc Films that people should watch cus its aged like Wine like Keanu & seeing this movie 2 years ago this was a phenomenal film visually and the script especially with the jokes and Shia LeBeouf doing a funny yet optimistic sidekick plus Rachal Wise doing this bad ass in real life but joining along this Heavenly War ! P.S. I'm even more excited (hopeful fingers crossed) that they are doing CONSTANTINE 2 as a reemergence of old DC films
I didn't even know it was based on a comic back when I first watched the movie. Or the next three times. I just loved this movie as a stand-alone. Still do. Tilda Swinton in a male role absolutely blew my mind, especially since she completely SOLD it. Movies should do that more often. To sum it up, 10/10, best Anti Smoking Commercial I ever watched. (Also omg I think I can actually distantly remember RIPD)
I remember a line from the "Hellblazer" comics, back in the 90's, might not get it exactly right. Constantine : "I don't know why people think angels are beatific. They scare the shit out of me." Tilda Swinton's androgynous look is perfect, and she turns in an excellent performance.
@@Arcahnslight They should do it with actors that could pull it off. They are very few and far between. But not impossible. It would just be neat to see again, it has been so long
This has been one of my all time favorite movies since it came out. Its so incredibly well done and timeless. Thank u for covering it so wonderfully and reminding ppl about its worth. Awesome job man!
First time I saw Tilde Swinton. I've never seen a more perfect depiction of an angel. Ethereal. So raw, honest and real. Yet also off, inhuman. I would love to see her in a similar role.
Gabriel is one of the highlights of this film, as well as Lucifer. Will have to watch it again, but I remember liking Tilda Swinton in "The Dead Don't Die", a quirky horror (sci-fi?) film.
Oh, this is one of my favorites. The movie props are excellent and the score has been in my playlist since it came out. You can see the the passion that went into making it what it is.
Bro, this video randomly came up in my feed. I was so blown away by Constantine. Everything you said about its brilliance is true. And then I just forgot about it until today. Gotta watch it again. Your take is perfect.
I watched Constantine when i was i child and watched it since many many times, it immediatly became one of my favorite movies and i am happy that it became more popular ! Thank you for the video !
The day the earth stood still is a masterful recreation of an old tale. I always bring it up when people are hating on remakes. There are both good and bad takes on recreation is how I see it.
This is an awesome review of the movie- it truly is one of my favourites. When I first saw it, I didn’t know it was a comic-book based movie. It’s a true masterpiece
CinemaStix did an amazing analysis of the post production of this movie called "so that's why they cut all her scenes from the movie", that breaks down how more than half the scenes in this movie were cut down and repurposed for entirely different sections of the film from where they were originally intentioned.
0:01 I'm glad there are people out there that actually remember this and haven't been permanently brainwashed by meme culture. Because much like when I mention there being a brief period when Silent Hill 2 wasn't universally lauded as a masterpiece(and was intially viewed as a dissappointment and inferior to SH1), whenever I bring up this faded memory of Keanu's career, people swear I'm mistaken or making stuff up and respond with vitriol
I do love CONSTANTINE, and would be first in line for a sequel. I think another movie (series) that should get a hat-tip for inspiration is Christopher Walken's "Prophecy". Also, I enjoy Dylan Dog. Was it great? Nope. But it was entertaining and I really like Brandon Routh as the hero. If Superman Returns had been a better movie, I think Routh would've been a star. And finally, you left out one of the BEST Marvel movies, and one that really propped the soor open for greater success: BLADE.
My main problem with this movie, comic, and video is simply how poorly it understand Christianity. They are not tackling Christianity, they're tackling an atheist strawman of religion with Christian aesthetics.
I agree with this, and I am not even fluent in Catholicism. This is definitely an atheist interpretation. The reason that one act is the only irredeemable sin is precisely because it removes any chance of redemption permanently.
I thoroughly enjoyed Constantine in my teenage years for its fantasy action. Appreciated it more in my 20's for its pacing and visual storytelling. Now in my 30's, I find it impossible to find another fantasy or comic-book film that evokes existential dread paired with perfect comedic/tension relief after emotional moments with a perfect soundtrack to boot. Constantine is the definition of a fine wine movie. Great video essay. 🙂
I really appreciate Keanu and love some of his films, but as a DC comics and Hellblazer fan, I never cared for his version of Constantine, or l should say, Keanstantine. It was a good supernatural thriller, but a poor Constantine movie. Keanu is simply not right for that role, and never will be.
It absolutely captures the heart of the character. LOVED this when it came out, still love it. I own and have read the 300 main issues, the annuals, the one-offs, the terrible New 52 shit, the expectedly good Sandman Universe run. I didn't mind Matt Ryan's take, but it's a lot closer to the New 52 and Rebirth version than what Delano, Ennis, MIna, Diggle, and Azzarello (to name a few) did to make the character we loved.
9:15 no offense, dude, and I know you're no theologian, but this is just absolutely wrong on so many levels. This is a very, very, shallow view and misinterpretation of the Bible, scripture, and Christianity. It is also not "blindly believing" in something, & Christianity is a relationship with God. I recommend studying more on Christianity even if you aren't a Christian. It's important to understand human world views rather than strawmen, which by nature paint a bad image on a worldview or make those who follow it somehow seem less intelligent for believing and following a world view.
Keanu is like a brick of gold hidden amongst layers of mud. Even though sometimes it was a little hard for me to watch certain parts of the film in my house, Constantine is an overall amazing character for Keanu to play. I can tell he loved it and he really wants to do it again.
The fact that some people don't know thus film blows my mind. Everyone I speak too LOVES this film. I would say its one of Reeves' finest! I hope one day we do get another Constantine film ❤
Saw this at the theatre when it came out. Agree about the camera work, and the inclusion of "Take Five" was great. Gonna have to go back and watch it. Really is a good movie.
Constantine has been and always be my favorite movie of all time. I love it! Way too much. The subtle themes the introspective look upon a person's mentality. It was just interesting and it had its own style of presenting a story. I love away too much
Lucifer and Gabriel in this movie are such a delightful subversion of the usual trope. They are both clearly of divine origin, above the everyday concerns of mere mortals, and at the same time they are both fallible to the simplest human vices. It's such a fine line and they both walk it so well! And then there is Constantine, the cynical good guy, and in every scene you can see how Keanu is just a little uncomfortable being the asshole, and it fits John's character perfectly. What a hidden gem this movie is.
Man I remember watching this on the theater at 11 when it came out, and going home and seach for every comic from Constantine that I could find online. This movie really set me as a fan of comics and a huge fan of Keanu!
"Cant be your cab driver forever, john." Though I would have loved to hear more about Chas Kramer, this was an amazing video. It's such an amazing movie!
This was the film that got me into Hellblazer. Though it had little in common with the source material- Constantine is not a guilty pleasure. It is an actual pleasure to watch! It's easily one of, if not, my favourite Keanu role.

Constantine is one of my favorite movies of all time and I'm really glad that you brought some more attention to it.
I saw this in my youth when it came out and loved it. Guess i was ahead of my time.
Oh, this is one of my favorites. The movie props are excellent and the score has been in my playlist since it came out. You can see the the passion that went into making it what it is.
Wrong. The first John Wick was Dracula 1992. John was bitten by female vamps and gained age powers. After he lost Mena he changed his last name.
Nice crossover theory. That Dracula movie is my favorite of Dracula movies. Another gem that we never hear about anymore.
Tbh I just pretend Keanu from Dracula matrix and the John wick films are the same guy
Bro, this video randomly came up in my feed. I was so blown away by Constantine. Everything you said about its brilliance is true. And then I just forgot about it until today. Gotta watch it again. Your take is perfect.
This guy talking about movies with some passion like i used to watch Every Frame a Painting for,
Subbed
I watched Constantine when i was i child and watched it since many many times, it immediatly became one of my favorite movies and i am happy that it became more popular ! Thank you for the video !
The day the earth stood still is a masterful recreation of an old tale. I always bring it up when people are hating on remakes. There are both good and bad takes on recreation is how I see it.
Hey no shade! I enjoy that film too, though it's been YEARS since I've rewatched it.
Keanu was terrifyingly alien.

I'm glad there are people out there that actually remember this and haven't been permanently brainwashed by meme culture.
I didn't like the amount of times Shia LaBeouf's character said "John". Apart from that, was a good watch. Saw it at the movies 🎥 🤓
Literally watched it for the first time last week, had never heard of it before. Excellent timing
Thank you for the Prophecy love! It's a classic!
I am glad to see a positive review of Constantine, I know people have panned it over the years. But I always remember really enjoying it.
The NBC series adaptation is also VERY good!
Thank You for making a video about Constantine. I Love it---- Keanu admitted loving it too.
At 9:10 if that is what you think Faith is you don't understand what the Bible actually teaches. Faith is not without evidence.
Sure, now ask your god to stop pedophilia and rape happening in Churches all across the world.
I rewatch this movie from time to time. Every frame in that movie is study worthy.
That's crazy how you said nothing in so many words
@azadconsumescontent it's crazy that your reading comprehension is that fried.
My thoughts exactly
That's actually well put. You have a valid point as well
Actually, I agree and disagree. Yes it's a "relationship" with God. But you also have to acknowledge there is blind faith involved.
Watched this in the theaters and it has remained a favorite of mine this many years later.
This will always be apart of my favorite movies of all time, Keanu has been a favorite of mine ever since watching this.
Just showed it to my partner, was so good to rewatch! I love this film, glad someone is talking about it
Saw this at the theatre when it came out. Agree about the camera work, and the inclusion of "Take Five" was great. Gonna have to go back and watch it. Really is a good movie.
I love Constantine! It's a movie I can watch over and over again and enjoy it every time, just like The Fifth Element. Brilliant movie!
This movie Resonated so deeply with me in my young teenage years.
I remember having this film on dvd and watching it over and over again as a kid. Its a beloved movie for me and i will cherish it aways.
Thank you for showing love to this film....
Into the light I compel thee... Sickest thing I've ever seen. Shook to this day from the concept.
This movie was amazing and I wish it got more credit, thank you
Constantine has been and always be my favorite movie of all time.
To this day, one of my favourite movies. Well done.
This film is a masterpeice imo, has such an ambiance and style. All the actors did an stellar job.
Everything in the movie worked pretty well:
the cast
the soundtrack
the special effects
the dialog
this was one of my favorite movies as a kid, good to see something about it rn
"Cant be your cab driver forever, john." Though I would have loved to hear more about Chas Kramer, this was an amazing video. It's such an amazing movie!
I’m glad you made this! I’d give anything for Constantine 2.
Did you know the majority of people didn’t know about the end credits scene?
This was the film that got me into Hellblazer. Though it had little in common with the source material- Constantine is not a guilty pleasure. It is an actual pleasure to watch! It's easily one of, if not, my favourite Keanu role.
Criminally underrated film and definitely among the best Keanu vehicles. Will always be one of my favorites.
