      Thank you so much!!! I love that!! I definitely want to try! I have such a hard time keeping up with planners because I love to plan, but then I'll get busy and not use it for a few weeks. :/ Do you have any book recommendations to use? I looked at target but all they had were lined journals.

    • @mmarquez1100
      @mmarquez1100 7 років тому +1

      How to Hand Letter you can definitely use lined journals if that's all you can get a hold of. The most popular ones are the leuchttrum 1917 and the moleskin. They are little pricey considering you're just starting. I got my first one at Michaels. It was seven dollars in the "trending section" which has different cute bullet journals. They have grid and dotted journals. Thing is they're kind of small and it doesn't lay flat. That's something to look for. Size. Whether it lays flat or not. Lastly, paper quality id say. You can also order one from Barnes and noble that will be cheaper than the popular ones. Just make sure it's dotted or grid. Worst comes to worse... You get a nice blank sketch journal which you can find everywhere! But you would have to use a ruler for everything! If you don't mind spending $15-20 on the popular ones, head on over to Amazon :)

    • @HowtoHandLetter
      @HowtoHandLetter  7 років тому +3

      Thank you so much - that is the nicest compliment! I'm not sure where you are in your lettering journey, but making sure that your pressure comes second nature is the first key! Once that is second nature, it's a lot easier to bounce around and create different lettering styles! I'm working on a freebie worksheet of 10 different ways to write each letter, so watch out for that in the next couple of weeks! You can also look at the stems of your letters (like h's, k's, etc.) and try to switch up the variation there. I feel like in my lettering journey, I've changed the style of those about a million times ;) Good luck!

    This was a great guide. My suffering in forming k, m, n, p, q, u, w, x, y was great. B and d curvature also brings up problems. This would be great if capital letters would be demonstrated as well. I noticed I had real trouble connecting the letters even if I paused to make my line with great care. Thank you so much for the demonstration! Also your video title is a great exercise to write most of these letters! ^____^b

    I know this sounds silly but what if your left handed is it done differently?? I cover my letters as I'm moving across the page

    • @HowtoHandLetter
      @HowtoHandLetter  7 років тому +9

      Hello! No, that's not silly at all! I'm not a leftie so I don't know from experience, but I do know that it can be difficult since you have to work to not smear your letters. There are a few different techniques I've seen people use as far as how they hold their pen (and some even right from right to left - amazing!). But the letter formation is still the same. Sorry I can't show you since I'm right handed, but there are a few other channels/instagram feeds out there that do leftie lettering. Try searching "left handed calligraphy" or "leftie hand lettering" and you should find a bunch of videos. You can find ElisaAnne Calligraphy or InkerellaCards on youtube, who both do left handed calligraphy. Hope that helps! And thanks for watching!

    • @redsquirrel6131
      @redsquirrel6131 6 років тому

      I'm a leftie and yes its different. You have to lay the pen on ots side because you are pushing, not pulling. So let the pen lay on its side and tilt your paper right. That really helps. Also Os can be problematic so practice those first until you feel really confident. But its pretty easy once you get the os figured out.

    • @HowtoHandLetter
      @HowtoHandLetter  7 років тому

      Hello! What pen are you using? I haven't had much of a problem with my tips going blunt, moreso fraying. But if they do, you could try holding at more of an angle and rotating the pen every so often to keep it from getting too worn on one side and not the other. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

    • @Nikki92301
      @Nikki92301 7 років тому

      Wouldn't the paper also have a great deal to do with the fraying/bluntness? I have a few tombows myself which have frayed due to using the wrong (textured/long-fibered) paper.

    We hold our pens the same way. Do you tend to find yourself writing heavy or holding your pen REALLY hard? I cant seem to loosen my grip... my lettering is awful but I can draw ok. Its really frustrating.

    • @HowtoHandLetter
      @HowtoHandLetter  6 років тому

      Yes! I have both of those problems! I am super heavy handed and it's taken me a long time to stop giving my pens the death grip lol! I used to get a super sore hand/wrist, so I think that helped me to lighten up. You can also try holding your hand a little higher on the pen. This feels kind of foreign to me, but with some practice it can help loosen your grip. I also think practicing with a dip pen & ink helps because you won't be able to easily glide the pen across the paper if you push too hard. I hope that helps & thanks for watching!
