Thank you so very much for making these videos! I am 50 years old and just registered for a professional pilot program. I have very few actual flight hours. So basically starting from scratch. I’m planning to complete my commercial pilot license this year. Before I came across your videos I was a little nervous that I might be making a crazy decision. I feel encouraged and hopeful again!
currently working on my ppl, about to take my checkride. I see alot of my instructors with 1500 hours still not getting picked up. its somewhat discouraging but your information just gave a boost to keep on pushing. thanks T.
First day flight instructing, 300 hours. Can be dejecting that everything slowed as I've wrapped the training. However, timing for that 1500 in a year or so could be stellar. Patience. Thanks for the content, Trent!!
Great video. I have to say from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making these videos. Your method inspired my own success when everyone around me was telling me I’d need twice the time I was proposing. I started training on March 11, two weeks ago on Nov 4 I was granted my Commercial Pilot Instrument ASEL temp cert. CFI and multi expected by end of year. Not nearly as fast as you, but it has been a fine pace and I’ve felt like I’ve had the time to explore offshoots such as diving into Advisory Circulars, nitpicking the FAR/AIM, and exploring accident case studies. I have also do quite a bit of home simming on the Pilot Edge network which has helped tremendously. You are an absolute beast for the pace you have set. It’s the benchmark! Thanks again for all that you do Trent!
A note on Southwest is that the hiring they did do later this year is purely Destination 225 cadets they are getting through (and that program has been closed for years). They closed actual hiring mid-summer, and it's not going to open back up until 2026 at the earliest. Almost all of their issues are Boeing and the Max 7 not being certified.
When I had a meet and greet with SWA last month, what they said in no uncertain terms, was pretty much in line with what you just said. This is definitely good intel.
I just attended RTAG in Dallas and most airlines are not hiring right now. They do project next year will return to a more normal level for new hires. With that said, there were three thousand people in attendance! Most with tons of hours,so lots of competition for those slots!
great channel & quality, informative videos. not necessarily easy to find in today's landscape. keep doing what you're doing! channel will probably blow up once you get to make some day in the life pilot videos hahaha
The problem my friend is worse than you describe. There is a shortage of parts for A320 & B787 engine overhaul. Latin american and america/canadian airlines are no different to the rest of the world. Taxes are huge in Canada, forget going there to work, not to mention an absurd housing shortage and out of control inflation.
@ Trent. For the lates situation update about Canada, just search on you tube and there are half a dozen really good videos on why Canada is failing and has deteriorated in leaps and bounds. As for the shortage of engine parts, I fly for a flag carrier that wants to grow it’s heavy fleet but instead is stuck with grounding 2 B787 next year due to OH shops not having spare components on the shelves. This is not on the web, it is right out of many meetings with engine parts suppliers and several engine OH shops in USA and abroad. Plus the shortage of qualified Techs to work at these shops has greatly diminished after pandemic. The older guys either retired or passed due to Covid, and not enough young guys are showing up at the door with resumes in hand willing to earn upwards of $60 an hour to start. Lets see how Trump wont fix this either. There is plenty skilled labour for this in Latin America, but USCIS doesn’t care either…
Not only is Spirit not hiring, they are fuloughing. 130 pilots on the street now and 320ish scheduled for Furlough in January. Plus a few hundred more captain downgrades.
He told me that I’m slated for a training class in February. They also tell you that they’re going to send you an email 60 days before the start of your training class. I have not yet received an email so I do not yet have an exact class date.
Trent, as someone extremely interested in jumping into the airline industry from financial forecasting, i really appreciate the reporting and supporting evidence of the current hiring situation. My one question that i have though is how does the flight school pipeline look feeding these airlines? You mentioned they're bursting at the seams. Are there any reports out there that quantify the number of pilots in training that would indicate how much supply is being increased that will flow into these upcoming positions? Just trying to gauge whether or not the industry will experience the bull-whip theory and if current trainees (supply) will satisfy upcoming positions (demand) before i jump from a career in finance to living my dream of aviation. I would appreciate your thoughts.
Doug…. my evidence is anecdotal at best, but here’s what I know. From speaking with a few Flight School owners their business is definitely down. This doesn’t really come as a surprise because as soon as hiring slows, it would be a natural consequence that enrollments would slow down as well. I would encourage you to do your own research to get a feel for this. If you want hard data, use Google to direct you to the data on number of student pilot certificates issued by the FAA. Unfortunately, the newest of this data is from 2023 so it will be of limited value.
Thanks, @trent_dyrsmid! I truly appreciate your insight on this and the additional guidance. That's a great idea about checking how many certificates have been issued. Like you mentioned, the data will have a significant lag but depending on the data available I can compare and contrast year-over-year changes in issuance. Perhaps highlighting a decent trend. Thanks for your thoughts, I love the channel and your interaction. Godspeed!
Because it doesn’t exist. I’m based in Western Europe and I can’t find a flying job, been qualified over 10yrs now with no luck. I wish I had access to the US job market
@ - it’s fine, story of my life. I’m based in Ghana at the moment but I have a UK CAA licence & passport. It’s nowhere near as good, I trained with an American guy who is similar age and ethnicity to me, he’s now a captain at Delta. The discrimination in certain places is unreal, shame really but such is life
Newly christened CFI here. Really like all the facts and statistics. However, “pilot shortage” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it like back in 2021 when new hires were going from right seat at regional, to right seat for a major, within 12-24 months. I think the airbus and Boeing issues are definitely the most prevalent issues for the current hiring landscape. With this being noted, there are still A TON of flight schools with 1500+ hour CFI’s right now. Making it very difficult for me to find a job as a new CFI. This is vastly due to the ‘21-‘22 hiring boom and the fact that a lot of those people are still taking up a lot of space as FO’s. Good video, but the term “pilot shortage” struck me as a bit click baity given how much things have changed in the last few years.
The thumbnail didn’t contain the word shortage…and according to Boeing and the FAA, there is a shortage….but as we all know, just not in 2024. Thx for watching!
Great video. Love the statistics ! Do you think that with a hiring boost at the airlines in 2025 and 2026, there will be more hiring of corporate pilots because of pilots leaving corporate and going to the airlines?
Yes, and I say that because eventually Boeing will sort out its problems and deliveries will resume and when deliveries resume, Pilot hiring will also resume.
Hey Trent, love the videos can you look into interviewing pilots that fly for international carriers to compare the QL and pay? I’ve heard a lot of different things mainly second hand horror stories from pilots who only have ever flown domestically. My back ground is in Mandarin Chinese and I always wondered about the possibilities of flying from here to there. Things im interested in is, how do the regulations differ, QL as mentioned previously and how difficult is it to transfer from a domestic airline to international and back
QUESTION: Trent: I don't think I understand why ongoing retirements create *more* demand than the current demand. Even though Boeing & Airbus have problems...why wouldn't retirements just be replaced as normal??
It comes down to demographics. Thanks to the number of baby boomers that were born, there is a significant wave of retirements of those boomers at this point in time.
I have a question. Does the IATA consider plane shortage in their seat-kilometer equation? I imagine that dramatically skews the statistic if they don't
The FAA is the best source for that data and you can see it here. As you can see, the most recent data is from last year. www.faa.gov/data_research/aviation_data_statistics/civil_airmen_statistics
@ I have been on Pilots Global looking at the various jobs worldwide. Canada seems to post a healthy amount; not major airline gigs but a variety of smaller operations. Look like a small trend to my eye.
Please paste the link to the documents. Thanks! I'm going to read that study...who is funded by??...doesn't make sense on the surface for such a big shortfall in 2026.--Boeing's deliveries will just continue at a steady rate once approved; which should be a negligible increase IMO, depending on the "release" rate the FAA allows Boeing.
Since it's less centralized than part 121 I'm sure accurate data is harder to gather, but it would be interesting if you find anything since that's one way people build time to work up to the majors.

Boeing and Airbus (for the most part). The public knows travel demand is high and the airlines won’t be able to keep up until the majors properly recover.
