Aloha Trent! My story is a long one so I'll try to make it really quick, I earned my private pilot's license when I was 21 life happened and now I'm 57 years old and I've just completed my first flight review in 28 years last week. I came across one of your videos I believe it was this one when you recapped your story in the beginning and as you I also went the way of creating multiple companies and selling them off as I needed. With that being said you were smarter then me I ended up with no money and bankrupt through covid and that's when my wife and I decided to move to some raw land we had on the big island of Hawaii and do some "camping". At 57 years old I'm not looking to get on with in Airline however my wife makes a decent living and I can see myself settling into a nice cfi/cfii position here in Kailua Kona where we have a lot of people coming and going receiving various certifications mainly helicopter. As of the last entries in my log book from many years ago I was at about 250 hours and I wanted to share my story with you for a couple of reasons, the first is obviously our parallel life stories are very interesting and I can appreciate quite a bit of your story but also I can say at 57 years old getting back into flying is what I call making a dream come true 2.0! If you want it bad enough it'll happen. The main reason for me introducing myself is that I really wanted to say thank you for laying all of this out for the rest of us to enjoy because just the instrument portion of getting back into flying is a bit overwhelming and I'm really enjoying how you're breaking it down for us not only taking us along for the ride but also sharing your Insight and knowledge! So let me just say thank you, thank you and of course thank you for what you're doing for us there's quite a bit more to my story someday I hope to share it with you. Aloha and Mahalo Nui my Aviation brother ~Greg
Trent, thank you for taking me on this journey with you on your aviation experience. I'm also in the process of transitioning to being a pilot full time as well; I'm just waiting to get my class 1 medical first before I get my hopes up. Your passion and determination help to fuel my own passion to start school and finish up as this truly is a precidented time to be in aviation. I may have missed the boat when I was a young 20 year old, but I'm older, wiser, financially stable, and determined to fulfill my dream of flying in the majors. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to the next video. cheers.
No such thing as a best school. Just a a good school/instructor is all you need. I’d suggest a part 62 school. If you want to come to Boise in Sept, I’ll train you :)
Trent you are an inspiration to many including me. Thanks for all you’re doing. I’m 45, going to flight school and loving it. You have streamlined my study and timeline. I can’t thank you enough for sharing your knowledge and experiences. PS, congrats on passing your instrument rating!
Hi Trent! My name is Molly. I’m 54 years old about to take my instrument checkride- late in life career change. I LOVE Dan’s videos and have watched them all several times. I have JUST found you today on You Tube! I LOVED this first video. I am also a newly certificates AGI and IGI because I discovered that I also learn best when I have to teach the material. I look forward to joining your group and watching more videos! Great job!
Hi Molly! Welcome to my channel! Thanks so much for watching one of my videos! I really appreciate you taking a moment to comment! I read every comment personally 🙌
Congratulations Trent on passing your check ride. Sharing your experiences and tips are a tremendous help, so thank you. I've just found a CFI that I like and am compatible with for my PPL. First flight after 23 years was last week and I still can't stop grinning. I was expecting to be treated like a first time student, but no. She ran me through the gamut from take off, climbing and descending turns, slow flight, power on and off stalls, steep turns and landings. When she said, nothing I did in the cockpit scared her, I felt elated and surprised at myself to be honest. I now have the confidence to make this a reality. I was sitting on the fence about getting my PPL but your first video pushed me over into wanting to make this a career change. Thanks again.
Hi Trent - I’ve been following you since your first video appeared in my UA-cam recommendations. Our path is pretty similar as I also received my ppl when I was a college graduate and at 53 I’m currently enrolled in a flight school working on my instrument on a path to be a commercial pilot. Truly appreciate your videos and the knowledge you have been picking up along the way. Looking forward to your journey as you work through the program.
Good job Trent. I’m 74. Got my PPL in 1972. Work and family got in the way. Haven’t flown for 30 years. Am now researching flight schools in the DFW area to get recurrency training and biennial.
I really appreciate this channel. I'm 34 and working on my PPL right now. There's a lot of young bucks getting the certs right now, and this channel helps me push through the feeling of being too old to go commercial. Thanks Trent, hope to hear your voice over the radio soon!!
Hey Trent, I'm getting ready for my Intrument checkride and I really appreciate the suggestions! I'm 51 and enjoy sharing this adventure with people like you for my career 2.0. Stay safe out there!
Love this, Trent! Im 3 weeks into my instrument part 141 school. I needed some motivation and this helped me big time. Im going to try your methods out. And Congrats on reaching 500 hours recently!
Thanks for your video. I'm now 56 w/ an FAA PPL and will begin working on my Instrument and Commercial after 3 decades of 'life'. I greatly appreciate your video.
I always lean towards over prepare then doing just enough. The way your studying not only prepares you for the test but th info actually is absorbed and stays with you during in your (and maybe one day soon my) pilot journey
Trent 🛫 I started following your channel 6 min after you uploaded the 1st video. I'm 55 and due to your commitment and positivity I to am working (from 0) towards my ratings. I also found that the Jeppesen, Sportys, Shepards, and the channel you use with the orange icon are the best 🏆 as well as the ACS guides! All your information is sooooo on piont i hope everyone here takes heed to your advice. Please continue to upload everything you think of! Ty and all the best 🏆🥇🛫🇺🇸
Hi Trent. I'm only a year younger than you. And because of your videos, it's rekindled my old childhood dream of becoming a commercial pilot. I binge watched a bunch of your videos and have learned so much about the different programs and pathways available for people to get to the airlines. It kinda feels like you're passing along insider information to your friends. I'm inspired. I look forward to following you as you document your journey. I wish you continued success. -- Orlando
Wow, Trent- your Google doc is pretty incredible & the fact that you’ve shared it with your channel viewers even more so. Mental organization is my weakness so your document is that much more valuable to me. Thank you very much for what you’re doing! Incidentally, I’m 50, been in the aviation industry for 30 & have 6000+ flight crew hours and have always secretly wanted to be a professional pilot but couldn’t see the path. 🤷🏻♂️
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment. It all helps my channel to grow and help more guys/gals like us!! BTW, I’ve got a free email course on how to become a professional pilot as fast as possible. The course covers things like how to study to the written exams, how to pick a school, how much to expect to spend, how to get financing, etc….If you’d like to gain access, just go to FlyWithTrent.com and become an email subscriber.
Trent, again Kudos to your analytics of how to study/train. You are spot-on about utilizing all your senses to study; sight, sound and writing/typing. I mentor people beginning in aviation, aspiring for aviation knowledge, getting additional ratings and career progression. My way of studying was 54 years ago, but very similar, whereas in our modern time, there’s so much more resources than only books that I had available. My first simulator experience was at my airline, on a DC-9. Today, the cool sims are invaluable, and should be used as much as possible. Prepping for written tests and check rides is one necessary evil, but the primary thing is understanding the big picture, flying smart and legal, and within one’s personal limits for your current level of experience. As I’m old school, I believe that even when flying in a modern, we’ll equipped airplane, you MUST know how to do EVERYTHING solo, with no help from a right-seater pilot or autopilot. Then, you can utilize the extras you have in your particular airplane, to reduce workload. Dave, 28,000 safe flying hours😉
This is the first video of yours I have seen and it is a huge inspiration. I am 37 years old with about 400 super cub hours in Alaska and making the transition to being a commercial pilot. A&P by trade and finally making the jump to doing the job of always wanted. To me, the written has been the most difficult portion and the way you break down the testing requirements is perfect for my way of learning. Keep up the great work!
Talk about dedication to studying, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else use that many resources to prepare! You certainly earned that instrument rating, congrats!
Thanks for all the very valuable information. I am a 47 year old private pilot working on my instrument rating. I also want to continue with other ratings and your insight is invaluable.
Congrats on your accomplishments and thanks for sharing. After flying about 1500 hours over the past 15 years I've finally decided to start training for instrument and commercial. The info you're sharing is useful.
Love the depth and insights into your previous stage of flight training. I have been curious as to the nitty gritty of an accelerated training experience ( eg failing exams, study materials etc.). I appreciate you sharing your story!
Great progress Trent. Very pleased for you. Reading through the comments I can see you are inspiring a significant group to pursue their dreams. Well done. It is uplifting to witness.
Thanks for this video. Even though I just started studying for my PPL, I like to have a roadmap and this video helped a lot. Congrats on becoming instrument rated.
Thank you!!!! You are a beast!!!! I am starting the ground school process right now and your videos are very encouraging. I'm a 52 y/o fireman who will be retiring in a few years and this is my new journey. Please keep the knowledge coming.
Congratulations on your Instrument Rating! I'm 59, have been flying 2 years, and working on mine now. Thank you for the great insight on organizing the study and all the resources you shared. I am standing-by for oral/checkride and the sim training videos . Keep up the great content.😀
Wow! This is the first video I have watched of yours and I hit the Jackpot! I got my PPL at age 67 and am close to my IFR check ride at age 70. I too have found FlightInsight videos to be awesome. Dan has the best visual content that I have come across. I would like you to do a detail of your oral portion and a video on the flight portion of your IFR Checkride. Thank you for your time and sharing your incredible detail on the ACS-- this will save me many hours of searching for content.
Excellent video! I am a couple of years older than you and also decided, not long ago, to pursue my passion for flying as a hobby. Got my private license and trying to get my instrument rating but I am overwhelmed with information in setting up a study plan. Your video was very useful. Thank you.
Great video man. I am only 24 right now and even though I don’t have all the financial freedom to pay for this journey, videos like yours are such a great help !
Trent, congrats on the instrument rating! I just passed my PPL checkride, moving right into instrument. Thanks for the great info, that google doc is GREAT!
This was a helpful video. I, too, had to stop my training and am working to get back into getting my instrument. Thanks for sharing your learning experience!
This is gold information for us Aviation dreamers, thanks so much Trent, I’m sure you’ll keep doing great on your ratings coming up, will be looking forward to hear the next videos as time allows you to make them! Million thanks again..
Trent, thanks for all the information..I purchased Shepard Air, downloaded the info from Pilotscafe for the instrument as well as your Google doc’s thanks a million.
I just found your video by chance but i’ve been working on my instrument for a while and have been quite overwhelmed with the amount of stuff i have to know and i haven’t felt like my studying has been leading to the results that i want. This plan that you have outlined here i think will really help me not be as overwhelmed i have been. I’ll check back in once i’ve taken my check ride!
Hey Trent thank you so much for this video. The other day I failed my commercial checkride during the oral portion and it was for the exact same reasons for what happened to you during private - my study method did not work for me and simply reading and watching videos did not work and for commercial, a much higher level of understanding and expertise is required. Learned it the hard way unfortunately and I am glad to hear I’m not alone. I’ve started a new study strategy which is very similar to what yours is by writing stuff down and basing everything off the ACS.
@@trent_dyrsmid I’m not sure what you have planned for your next video, but I would love if you had one on checkride failures. We make mistakes sometimes and I think it’s definitely important to reiterate it is not a big deal and pilots should not get discouraged!
Oh, just found it again. I sent you a message on facebook trying to find this video. I kept finding the older one. I'm getting organized and wanted to do the spreadsheet idea with the ACS stuff. Thanks again for the idea.
I would absolutely like to have you go through all of your experiences as you are very articulate and describe things quite well. Thank you for your work!!!!
Amazing stuff Trent, congratulations on your rating. I am about to get into it and this is a great resource and outline of what is meant to be one of the most difficult ratings. Best, Mark
Hi Trent! Amazing content. Thank you so much for being a bright light and for guiding so many of us through this journey. Can you please share the link to Collin’s document?
I neglected to ask Collin for his permission to share the doc before hand (because I didn’t think he’d mind), and when he found out that I posted the link, he asked me to take it down.
Amazing information. I know you gear your videos more towards older people wanting to get into aviation but I’m 21 and am working on my licenses. I barely finished my ppl and now working on my instrument rating. This is so beneficial to me. Love your dedication to making these videos.
Really appreciate you sharing your ACS outline! I have my instrument checkride July 20th and will be using all the resources you've provided in the description! Thank you, Trent!!
Trent, just started working on my instrument rating and really appreciate your videos. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Not on a new career track but plan on earning my instrument and commercial credentials anyway. By all means create a video detailing your oral and practical exam - it will definitely be well received. Cheers from Texas!
Interesting listening to your backstory. I first started flying lessons in Casper, Wyoming in 1998 (when I was 28). Only did 36 hours with 5 hours solo and 3 dual cross countries, so I didn't get my PPL. When I returned to Liverpool (UK), I didn't continue and then a just after lock-downs lifted (in 2021), I restarted from scratch. I've only done 26/27 hours so far and focussed on ground school all last year. Had other (financial) prorities so haven't flown since. The Civil Aviation Authority did away with selecting 20 questions from a question bank of 120 questions (which I thought was too easy) but then went from one extreme to the other. Now you have to study the entire books (9 of them) to pass the ground school. While I don't mind studying - and I found it quite enjoyable - they seem to ask questions to catch you out rather than test your knowledge. Even though I'm an aerospace engineering graduate, I failed 2 of the 9 exams albeit I passed the 2 after retaking them. I found that some questions were ATPL and many are English comprehension with very similar answers which makes you guess which one, so it's a coin toss. I have no intention of becoming and commercial or airline pilot but still hope to complete my PPL, Night, IMC (that's a UK only IR-restricted) and twin engine. The full IR takes a lot more effort and it may not be necessary for me.
Thanks for sharing a bit about your experience with flight training in your region. Sounds significantly more difficult than what we have here in the US.
Trent you are my motivation. I'm getting rust off this week after a year break to finish my PPL, left at solo... I'm a bit behind you. Gotta get my butt moving, need to catch up. I'm 3 years younger so you are my milestone pace 😉. Great content as always. Cheers! Victoria
HEY TRENT ! Hector Segovia here. Íd love to see the oral and check ride also, i think would be very helpful for a lot of people like me that we are tying to convert our country licenses to FAA and have no clue about the structure to follow. I’m currently doing a full conversion from Mexico to FAA, just passed the written IR and now that the check ride is coming id like to be more than prepared for that. Thanks a lot for your amazing info!!
Thanks for posting this Trent. I have never really paid close attention to the ACS because I didn't really know how to read it. All the "codes" were confusing and distracting. But since you laid it out this way, it makes so much more sense. I like your google doc method and I am going to do the same thing!
Trent, thanks for another great video, look forward to seeing many more. I’ve been in aviation for 27 years now mainly in maintenance and about 425 hour as a private pilot, looking to make the change to a commercial pilot as well. Wishing you the best on your adventures. Thanks for the great tips.
Trent, thanks for the inspiration and the resources that you provide! I just turned 50, and I am ready for the career change to aviation. I am making arrangements to hopefully begin my aviation journey later this summer.
@@trent_dyrsmid yes sir I’m grinding through Sportys now for my instrument with Sheppard Air as a supplement to take my written in the next week or so then doing all my IFR training at night with my instructor so we both build night hours!
I'm 71, retired, and ready to go the whole 9 yards. Well maybe 7 and a half. (For entertain purposes Only) When I started years ago there was no GPS, only paper charts and VOR. I plan on buying Diamond DA62 w/ glass cockpit, so Instrument Rating is a no brainer. Thanks for the encouragement.
Liked and subscribed!! Thanks for the info Trent, I'm taking my instrument check ride in August and am thankful for your study input. Congrats on passing your check ride 💪🏼

Thank you!!!! You are a beast!!!! I am starting the ground school process right now and your videos are very encouraging. I'm a 52 y/o fireman who will be retiring in a few years and this is my new journey. Please keep the knowledge coming.
You are so welcome!
Love the content, Trent! I’m 53 and you have inspired to pursue my dream of becoming a professional pilot. I’m just beginning my career 2.0 journey.
That’s awesome! Best of luck!
Thanks for taking the time to put this video together.
You bet!
Very valuable! Working on my instrument rating now.
Glad to hear it!
Congratulations on your Instrument Rating! I'm 59, have been flying 2 years, and working on mine now. Thank you for the great insight on organizing the study and all the resources you shared. I am standing-by for oral/checkride and the sim training videos . Keep up the great content.😀
Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
Glad I could help! I may do the video you suggest at some point.
Excellent video! I am a couple of years older than you and also decided, not long ago, to pursue my passion for flying as a hobby. Got my private license and trying to get my instrument rating but I am overwhelmed with information in setting up a study plan. Your video was very useful. Thank you.
Good to hear!!
Great video man. I am only 24 right now and even though I don’t have all the financial freedom to pay for this journey, videos like yours are such a great help !
Thx very much!
Trent, congrats on the instrument rating! I just passed my PPL checkride, moving right into instrument. Thanks for the great info, that google doc is GREAT!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing, been out of the cockpit for two years, hope to start my IFR training later this year. Appreciate all your efforts
Best of luck!
Congrats on passing your Instrument Rating! Thanks for sharing the resources and techniques! I will update my approach as I prep for my PPL oral!
🙌🙌
I'm studying for my instrument rating now, I can't wait to check this one of the list.
🙌 thats terrific! Blue skies ahead!
This was a helpful video. I, too, had to stop my training and am working to get back into getting my instrument. Thanks for sharing your learning experience!
Glad it was helpful!
Congrats on all the certs. I start in March in a 12 month program, and your resources should be a huge help. So thank you for that!
You are so welcome!
This is gold information for us Aviation dreamers, thanks so much Trent, I’m sure you’ll keep doing great on your ratings coming up, will be looking forward to hear the next videos as time allows you to make them! Million thanks again..
Thanks, will do!
thanks for such an infomative video !
Glad it was helpful!
Congrats on your accomplishments and thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome!
Trent, thanks for all the information..I purchased Shepard Air, downloaded the info from Pilotscafe for the instrument as well as your Google doc’s thanks a million.
You’re welcome!!
🙌 thats terrific! Blue skies ahead!
🙌 thats terrific! Blue skies ahead!
@@trent_dyrsmid I’m not sure what you have planned for your next video, but I would love if you had one on checkride failures. We make mistakes sometimes and I think it’s definitely important to reiterate it is not a big deal and pilots should not get discouraged!
I don’t have one planned for that at this point. There are quite a few like that on the ‘Tube already.
Oh, just found it again. I sent you a message on facebook trying to find this video. I kept finding the older one. I'm getting organized and wanted to do the spreadsheet idea with the ACS stuff. Thanks again for the idea.
You bet!
I would absolutely like to have you go through all of your experiences as you are very articulate and describe things quite well. Thank you for your work!!!!
Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment. It all helps my channel to grow and help more guys/gals like us!!
Thanks for all the information. Getting organized to get my Instrument Rating early next year and this is helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Learned so much in just this >20 min video! Thanks for sharing the resources and knowledge. Safe and sunny skies!
Glad it was helpful!
Fantastic Trent, thanks a bunch for this. +1 for Flight Insight, Dan is such a great teacher.
My pleasure!
Thanks for the insights Trent. Lots of ways to get information for IFR.
You bet!
Great video, Just passed instrument written and this video was helpful as I am mapping my path forward to my check ride.
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing stuff Trent, congratulations on your rating. I am about to get into it and this is a great resource and outline of what is meant to be one of the most difficult ratings.
Best, Mark
Hey Mark, thanks very much for watching! It is definitely the most technically challenging, but I think the CFI is probably harder overall.
@@trent_dyrsmid No worries! Thanks a lot-- Best Channel!!
🙌
Hey Trent, keep up the good work. Really appreciate how you think outside the box with your content.
I appreciate that!
Amazing information. I know you gear your videos more towards older people wanting to get into aviation but I’m 21 and am working on my licenses. I barely finished my ppl and now working on my instrument rating. This is so beneficial to me. Love your dedication to making these videos.
Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
Congratulations! I take my Instrument check ride in 2 days.
Good luck!!
Really enjoy your content. I’m looking forward to your many successes! Way to go!
Thanks so much!
Thank you for the information. I am getting ready to start my IFR ground training.
Best of luck! Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
Really appreciate you sharing your ACS outline! I have my instrument checkride July 20th and will be using all the resources you've provided in the description! Thank you, Trent!!

Dropping the value bombs, thanks Trent! You are super inspirational

Thanks for the video Trent. Always look forward to your posts. You’re living my dream right now. I’ll be following in your footsteps in about a year.
Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
Trent you are my motivation. I'm getting rust off this week after a year break to finish my PPL, left at solo... I'm a bit behind you. Gotta get my butt moving, need to catch up. I'm 3 years younger so you are my milestone pace 😉. Great content as always. Cheers! Victoria
Victoria! Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
Enjoy the video. Considering aviation as my career 2.0 so I appreciate all your advice.
Glad it was helpful!
Keep the good work! I’m with you and starting my commercial training!!! Merci!
🙌 thats terrific! Blue skies ahead!
Thank you so much for the orientation for new pilots.
Happy to help!
Noted! Thanks so much for watching one of my videos! I really appreciate you taking a moment to comment! I read every commemt personally 🙌
Trent, you provided exceptional information and thank you for sharing how you studied and providing the download files. Fantastic!
Glad it was helpful!
Great job, hope to get the instrument someday. Long story but been working on it for years. 66 and going to keep working.
Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
wow! I will def use the doc as a reference. This is very helpful ! thanks for putting in time & effort for it!
You're very welcome! Thanks so much for watching one of my videos! I really appreciate you taking a moment to comment!
I really appreciate your videos and the well thought out format and sharing of information 🙂
Glad you like them!
Congratulations Trent!🎉 Keep on pushing. You are an inspiration to my flight journey.
Thank you! Will do!
Thanks for posting this Trent. I have never really paid close attention to the ACS because I didn't really know how to read it. All the "codes" were confusing and distracting. But since you laid it out this way, it makes so much more sense. I like your google doc method and I am going to do the same thing!
Glad it was helpful!
Best video yet ...really appreciate the content!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
Congrats bro on your Instrument Ticket....keep the videos coming.
More to come!
Trent, thanks for another great video, look forward to seeing many more. I’ve been in aviation for 27 years now mainly in maintenance and about 425 hour as a private pilot, looking to make the change to a commercial pilot as well. Wishing you the best on your adventures. Thanks for the great tips.
Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
Trent, thanks for the inspiration and the resources that you provide! I just turned 50, and I am ready for the career change to aviation. I am making arrangements to hopefully begin my aviation journey later this summer.
Best of luck!
Thanks Trent! Love the content and YES WE WANT A VIDEO OF THE ACTUAL CHECKRIDE AND ORAL EXAM!!!
Noted. Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
@@trent_dyrsmid yes sir I’m grinding through Sportys now for my instrument with Sheppard Air as a supplement to take my written in the next week or so then doing all my IFR training at night with my instructor so we both build night hours!
🙌 thats terrific! Blue skies ahead!
40 Year Old checking in. Also got my PPL in my early 20s, also thinking career 2.0, also in Idaho. Going for my Instrument in a couple of months
🙌 thats terrific! Blue skies ahead!
I'm 71, retired, and ready to go the whole 9 yards. Well maybe 7 and a half. (For entertain purposes Only)
When I started years ago there was no GPS, only paper charts and VOR. I plan on buying Diamond DA62 w/ glass cockpit, so Instrument Rating is a no brainer. Thanks for the encouragement.
That is one very nice aircraft. Please bring it to Boise so I can train you in it!
Liked and subscribed!! Thanks for the info Trent, I'm taking my instrument check ride in August and am thankful for your study input. Congrats on passing your check ride 💪🏼
Thx!
This was very helpful.
I've been studying for my IFR checkride and this gave me new ideas. Thank you!!
