Joan Crawford spoke fondly of Norma Shearer during her MGM days. While Joan was suffering multiple miscarriages and was desperate to have a baby, she was amazed by Norma’s ability to continue as a career woman and be a mother in the 1930s. They were also pictured together at events in the 1930s and then by Eve Arnold in 1959! In Joan’s autobiography, A Portrait of Joan, she says: “My first appearance before the moving camera was anonymous. I doubled for Norma Shearer in her dual role in Lady of the Night. Between times, I tried to watch everything Norma did, for she was that wonderful being, a STAR. Also, she dated Irving Thalberg, who was in charge of studio production. Thalberg would come by the set occasionally, a cool-looking, dark young man who tossed a gold coin in the air, tossed it and tossed it, with such concentration that you never dared speak to him. I didn’t envy Norma, but I did long for a friend at court.”
Shearer had been a widow for three years by the time the Women was made. It was also Shearers idea to cast Joan in the picture, the rivalry was in Joan’s head, not Shearers.
There are a lot of pictures with Joan and Norma, and their dates, out on the town. It seems that after Norma retired Joan no longer had any issues with her. In one photo, Joan is looking at Norma and smiling. I think Joan admired Norma in a way. When Joan first came to MGM, she was the stand-in for Norma in a movie or two, sometimes Joan was shot from the back as Norma. During the filming of The Women, they permed Joan's hair so the stylist would have less to do, and one time both women drove up to the studio at the same time, and they kept driving around and around because the both wanted to be the last one to arrive so they could make an entrance. One time, Joan referred to Norma as that "cross-eyed bi#ch". lol. She was a bit cross-eyed. I don't think they really hated each other though. After Norma's husband died, Norma retired as she had no one in the main office at MGM fighting to get her good roles.
Joan was A MUCH better actress and much more famous than Norna Shearer Hardly noone remembers Norma Shearer but Joan will always be one of Hollywood's greatest actresses BTW I think Rosalind Russell was great in this movie. Almost as good as Joan
I don’t know where you get that Norma Shearer is unknown now or that Joan Crawford was more famous than her. 😂 Perhaps relevant for a longer period but that happens when someone, Shearer, retires a good 30 years before the other. Your whole statement is ludicrous.

I love that line: "there's a name for you ladies...''

You were a great actress !
Most clever and eloquent way the word "bitch" was ever written.
Joan's movies made money. Norma's were more of a 'showcase'. Though I like her very much and thought she was very good.
I adore Joan ❤

Ask anyone if they ever heard of Norma Shearer then ask them if they ever heard of Joan Crawford and you will get your answer
The people that run in my circles have never heard of either of them
@@liannapfister8255 then they are all ignorant

She means Norma Shearer was just an actress and she was just a tramp.
