  • Juanita Moore 1999 Interview Part 1 of 3. Videographed by Luke Sacher, interviewed by Carole Langer. Please excuse the time code placed on Ms. Moore's forehead- we had them made at a dubbing house rather than making them ourselves- as we did with ALL the other interview dubs- IDIOTS! LOL!
Juanita Moore (born October 19, 1922) is an American film and television actress. She is the fifth African American to be nominated for an Academy Award in any category, and the third in the Supporting Actress category.
Moore had a number of bit parts and supporting roles in motion pictures through the 1950s and 1960s. Her most famous role was as housekeeper Annie Johnson in the 1959 remake of Imitation of Life. Moore's portrayal of the broken-hearted Annie, whose daughter Sarah Jane (Susan Kohner) passes for white, won her a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. When the two-movie version of Imitation of Life was released on DVD one of the bonus features was a new interview with Juanita Moore.
Moore has continued to perform in front of the camera, with a role in the movie Disney's The Kid (2000) and guest-starring roles on television shows Marcus Welby, M.D., ER and Judging Amy.
Moore's grandson is actor/producer Kirk Kelley-Kahn, who is CEO/President of "Cambridge Players - Next Generation", a theatre troupe whose founding members included Moore, Esther Rolle, Helen Martin, Lynn Hamilton and Royce Wallace.

One of the MOST BEAUTIFUL actresses of all time....what a beautiful part she played as Annie Johnson ......I cried a lot during her passing and funeral...WOW......what a well known person she was in her town in the movie.....Lana had no idea how known she must have been. Such a gorgeous movie. Beautiful people played in this movie. Steve played by John Gavin.....was a handsome man.....should have been a law against looking so handsome and dashing. Still today a very handsome man.
One of my ALL TIME MOST FAVORITE Movies.....
Thanks for the Post. RIP Ms Moore.

    HATTIE MCDANIELS 1893-1952
    LOUISE BEAVER 1902-1962
    JUANITA WHITE 1914-2014
ARE THE TOP GREATEST AFRICAN AMERICAN ACTRESSES IN HOLLYWOOD OF THE 1930s/,1940s/ 1950s/ they paved the way for so meny and were treated so cruelly and disrespected to badly, they were stereotyped, pigeon Toed to play only one part and were not paid what they deserved and went through so much hatered and racism, they were black actresses at the core of segregation. They were extroardinary actresses who broke barriers and were very strong women. They need monuments of them and statues to remember them. I hate that they are never mentioned as great actresses. My they all RIP. Juanita Sweetheart you deserved that Oscar, you were incredible in the " Imitation of Life" movie...you made me cry, I got so so emotional, your performance was mind blowing amazing...I watch that movie and have loved it ever since. You were robbed of that Oscar.

I have so fallen under the spell of this majestic movie. Juanita Moore is someone most special. Truly, they aren't making people like this any more! To be so moved by this film, made so very long ago, and then, with the flip of a few keys be able to have JM talk to me about the experience of IMITATION OF LIFE some 40 years later is a gift not to be taken for granted. How gracious, gentle, thoughtful and kind is she. Her words held me kind of spell-bound, taking me back to the time & place of the movie. Her appreciation of Lana Turner is so obviously heart-felt and true. I imagine these two actresses, in continuing their friendship over the years, if they didn't see each other often when they did they would be a special bond that nothing could break. Lovely. A final thought is that in having Annie die so grandly in this film from 1958, what a surprise to find her still up and around to talk to us in 1999, going on to celebrate her 99th birthday but a few years ago. That's the way to do it, Juanita Moore! Always in our hearts...

Ms. Moore is such an amazing woman. I agree with what another poster said... I too could listen to her voice all day. Imitation of Life is my absolute most favorite movie of all time. Juanita Moore's performance is really what made me hooked on this version. She is so exquisite and talented. I watched the original and found it unworthy but this 1959 remake was truly remarkable. Lana Turner indeed was a beauty. God's continuous blessings to Ms. Juanita Moore always. Smooches to her, muah!

Thanks again Luke, I will be sure to check it out. I love all of the
movies of Ms. Turner, especially the ones you named along with
Madame X and Peyton Place too. Just like Ms. Moore said, Lana
Turner was a Star, and she was definitely right, and a beautiful one
too. I know there were other movies similar to "Imitation Of Life" but
the one filmed in 1959, will always be my favorite. I loved the whole cast of that one. Thanks for responding! I really appreciate it.

Oh wow, I didn't know that! I have watched 'A Daughter's Memoir' several times now and it is, hands down, one of the BEST documentaries I have ever seen and even people who don't have an Old Hollywood obsession like myself would enjoy it very much. I REALLY, REALLY believe that Lana loved her daughter with everything in her soul... she just happened to be picked out by the God's to be one of the biggest stars in the world and that complicates normal family life, to say the least!

I'm so glad I found this video!! I fell in love with this woman when my folks made us watch classic films when we were young to appreciate good film etc. Annie Johnson was so motherly and loving and caring and made me want to love my own mom even MORE just because of the way she acted with her character. Juanita Moore is the type of woman I would love to have around to tell me stories and just spend time with her. Yeah I loved Imitation of Life!!! I'm a huge fan of this woman and introduced my stepdaughter to the film and she as well fell in love with the character Annie Johnson. Yes this is a treat and thank you for uploading this. : )

Thanks for tuning in, and for your positive comment- we're very happy
that you are enjoying the interview. :) We shot this interview in the
living room of the house on Bedford Drive in Beverly Hills where the
Johnny Stompanato killing took place... when we were producing "Lana
Turner- A Daughter's Memoir" for TCM in 2001. It's packaged on DVD with
      "The Bad and the Beautiful".

That’s exactly what I said! What a disappointment and dis-service to Juanita! During a time as a black actress in such a film that explored the challenges of racism from a woman’s point of view as well as to learn about the life of Ms. Moore... I found it to be quite disrespectful and appalling! What a way to erase this prominent black actress!😡
