Went into a silver vault last night for the first time, and my friend and I only recovered like three or four chests before the vault closed on us. Your guide, however, is excellent, and after watching I feel perfectly prepared for the next vault. Thanks for making this video, dude! It's *really* on-point with basically no nonsense at all - nice and short, but still a perfect explanation!
So, my friends and I have been getting back into sea of thieves, and played this mission twice. First time, we looted every chest on instinct, but noticed the medals. We figured solving the puzzle would stop the door. Well, after a very frustrating experience getting chased around the map by a reaper, we finally made it to the vault, immediately put all our focus to solving the puzzle (didn’t notice the door open) and got trapped inside with minimal gains. I then came straight here. Needless to say, this video was immensely helpful
Sorry to hear your first couple run throughs were not the most successful raids. You should be good to go now though and will hopefully make it out with tons of loot! Good luck!
this video was great, the amount of guides who ''explain'' the puzzle in a garbled way that makes so sense, or completely ignore it in the video is astounding, but you did a really good and thorough explanation
Why isn't this the top video when I search for this, the other videos were absolutely crap. No charisma and no actual content. You, Rare Thief, gave me what I needed. Thank you and god bless. Signed. Margaret Burns
I LOVE the vault quests especially on open crew, cuz open crewing is becoming more like the early days when your crewmates were competent. Although my first vault wasn't too successful, as we couldn't work out the puzzle but still found the medallions.
I googled "Sea of Thieves vault puzzle" because I wanted to try and do my first one today, and this was the first thing that popped up. Very good guide!
400+ hours in game and today I learned how to solve it. I never did it alone because of not knowing how to do it. His website is the is the ultimate guide of everything
@@RareThief We successfully cleared most of a gold key vault with your guide! Sadly, all the treasure got stolen by hackers afterwards. But we know how to do it again now, at least! They took our two masts down with a single shot each (not two hits, two _shots_ ), two times in a row while we were moving, and killed us with single sniper shots from their sloop while some of us were several feet under water and trying to get close to their ship. They never missed a shot, neither on us nor on our ship, no matter the distance.
OMG! Thank you so much for creating this how to guide. I have a friend that usually solves the puzzles for me, but never actually explained to me how they did it. So now I know how, maybe I'll get those ancient chests now. :D
I swear those chests of Ancient Tribute are cursed. Either that or the game just hates to see me succeed. Because recently, for the first time ever I solved the puzzle and got one, and things went south SO fast. I'd been playing for the best part of two hours, solo slooping, and everything had gone perfectly. No player attacks, no Krakens, no storms, and I'd successfully dodged every Skeleton Ship and Fort that had threatened me without a single cannonball actually hitting my ship, even somehow outrunning a particularly determined Megalodon that had gotten close enough to clip its nose into the stern of my ship. I decided (wisely, as it turned out) to stop at an outpost and sell the assorted loot I'd collected whilst finding the map pieces, just in case. Then I found the vault, cracked it open, got the Ancient chest and a fair number of others out, and loaded up my rowboat. The nearest outpost was right next door, the job was as good as done, and was just nicely lining up with my usual logoff time too. That's when a storm arrived, and just so happened to be approaching in exactly the right direction to block the route to nearest outpost AND the next nearest one. I rowed frantically back towards my ship but paused when I saw the glint of treasure further up the beach I'd just left. Fortunately I had the sense to check what it was with my telescope, and sure enough it was a message in a bottle - useless to me right at the end of a session, and I swear it felt like the game was deliberately baiting me so I'd get stuck in the storm for longer. Returning to the ship, I set sail directly into the tempest, confident I could make the short hop to the outpost without serious difficulty. But this particular storm felt stronger than any I'd ever faced in Sea of Thieves before, as if the ship was categorically determined to go anywhere except the one direction I needed. And in the midst of all this, a Skelton Ship showed up! Not a random roaming one like those I'd avoided earlier, but one SPECIFICALLY spawning right next to me! Worse, its cannons were apparently blessed by RNGesus himself, because two consecutive shots hit me directly, both almost launching me clear off my ship and leaving me perched right on the brink of death. I had no time to retrieve any food when I was already battling with the wheel. But I was not to be beaten! I had anticipated that, despite my determination, crossing the storm could still prove somewhat troublesome, so I had left all the treasure aboard the rowboat. Seeing now that my sloop was surely doomed, I launched the smaller craft and rowed on, leaving the ship to sail off unmanned. The Skeletons blindly followed it, leaving me free to land at the outpost with my haul. As I grabbed the first chest and started up the beach, I suddenly realised I was in the middle of a storm, on my absolute last dregs of health. I dropped the chest (the damned Ancient Tribute one itself, no less) and ran back to the boat, but JUST before I could grab a life-saving banana from its inventory, the inevitable happened and I was killed by a bolt of lightning. As my ghostly self waited for the ferry door to open, I swore I would get that loot back and cash it in even if I had to cross the whole damn map. When I respawned, my sloop was waiting for me, having already been sunk, proving just how dire things were. To my surprise, I had spawned just one island away from the exact same outpost, and on the opposite side to the storm. At this point, this felt less like some overdue good luck and more like the game taunting me, saying "you're so close, just make one last effort!". But I returned anyway, practically running my ship fully aground out of sheer indifference to anything other than selling those chests. And sell them I did, for they lay just where I had left them, feeling like an even greater prize than ever after that ordeal. So you see why I accuse those Ancient chests of being cursed? I've had some bad solo sessions before, once even seemingly being followed back and forth by the same storm from island to island, but nothing, NOTHING like that fustercluck. And by God I pray that such a string of ill fortune never strikes me again, at least not when I'm playing solo...

Thanks I did a stone vault yesterday with my friend and we looted every single chest and my friend solved the riddle we got around 35k which is good I guess for a stone vault. Thanks for teaching how to do the puzzle
Amiir... i have used most ur tips and walkthroughs to complete the tall tales and now here i am watching this GOLDEN SHIT... DUDE... U ROCK MY WORLD... guys this guy is a fu**** genius!
Thank you for this clear and well Illustrated explanation. I was in one for the first time by self last eve and no idea how to do any of this and so didn’t get the ultimate chest. Next time!
Gosh I wish I knew this before I blindly entered my first Vault on my own ^^ Didn't know about the timer or medallions, figured the puzzle mechanics out but didnt work since no medallions and would not have kept the Vault open I hear :P Sad me only put 1 little chest out the door and panicked too much to get much gold haha... Lesson learned! Thanks for the great guide!
I deemed the medallion puzzle impossible but after seeing this I think it's bugged. I matched all the pillars and tried all 4 images on the fourth pillar and it STILL wouldn't open. I gave up on my attempts and got the chests. If I matched all the image and tried every single one on the fourth and it still doesn't open then something ls wrong. I assume it was unsolvable and merely a trap to keep you in the vault until your time runs out. Either way fuck the medallions, that puzzle is glitched or a trap.
As new players we got the quest, found the 3 halves of the map, got the key and entered the vault...we didn't have the emissary flag and we didn't solve the puzzle but got many boxes. Sold them for 100-500 gold each....huge let down....don't know if we did anything wrong but we get much more gold per hour doing fortresses and shrines.
Thanks for the guide man! I had a question, how can I tell if the vault key is going to be a gold one? We keep going on them but always find silver and stone.
What level Gold Hoarder are you? The higher your level, the better chance you have of getting a gold. If you are above 50, your almost guaranteed a gold. At least in our experience.
Don't know how the player i supposed to figure out about the fourth block. Great guide, now I feel motivated to try another vault in hopes of seeling my first chest on ancient tributes. Only things I'm worried about are finding the medallions and getting sunk by another ship while doing the vault.
It's fairly evident because the 4th block is different than all the other 3. May not be able to get it the first play through, but after using some puzzle solving logic, one is more than capable of figuring out the puzzle without a 'how to'. The biggest confusion will probably arise (like said water) when the puzzle doesn't stop the water from coming up, figuring out the water comes up regardless and the door being on a timer.
I thought if I do the riddle then the door opens, I was so confused when I got the riddle right and the water didnt leave. Thats evil from Rare to do it like that.
You are so welcome! Glad we could help! Oof, sorry you couldn't find that third medallion :( Something that might help in the future is rotating the fourth block around to deduce what the third block's symbol should be. Find the first two block's symbols on the fourth block and plug in the third symbol found on that block face into the third block. There might be two possible block faces on the fourth block that could work so you might not get it right away.
Rare Thief are you positive, because other videos I’ve seen have said that the timer doesn’t start until you take some loot out of the vault, so I want to make sure
@@therealmultibaker22 We have run the vaults 30+ times now and I set a timer each time. It's 3 minutes from when the vault door is done opening. You can time it yourself next time you run one :)
Haha! The puzzle is worth it to get that chest :) The chest is worth a lot and counts towards a commendation that will unlock some fancy sails! Good luck on your next attempt pirate!
How can I obtain this quest? I went to my level 30 gold hoarder, and I cannot see the the quest for sale in bar containing 3 quests. Is there some bigger menu where I can see all of the quests?
Hmm, so you are level 30 and couldn't purchase it? That's odd. Maybe try another Outpost. Sometimes the GH representative can not show all the possible voyage types.
If you purchase the voyage from the Gold Hoarders the key tier is tied to your Gold Hoarder reputation. The higher you are the more likely you are to get a Gold Key. If you purchase it from Larinna, I don't think you can get a Gold Key. We've been getting Stone Keys from her.
Rare Thief I meant more if ive done devils ridge, is it possible to get another devils rodge key from another Voyage again, but thanks for The answer! Great vid
Oh sorry, I see. Yeah, what Vault you get is completely random. You could get Devil’s Ridge again or you could get another island with a Vault. The key that spawns is usually for a nearby island but if that one is occupied it will pick another.
You want to find the medallions to help you complete the combination. Each time you place a medallion in the puzzle table, it reveals a symbol needed to complete the combination.
Ahoy there! Welcome to the sea :) You have to be level 25 reputation with the Gold Hoarder Trading Company before you can purchase the voyage. Once you are 25, you will find the Wayfinder Voyage for sale when speaking with any Gold Hoarder representative.
@@RareThief thank you another doubt this green indicator shows up when i only go for an open crew which indicates my mic is on or off but when i am on a closed crew and meet other pirates out there i cant understand whether its on or off there is no indication like before any idea abt that
i got into the gold vault (im gold horder lvl 63) and as i was putting in the final medalion the door closed, i got out but with the tribute chest still inside
I don't know if you'll still respond here, but I had one last night that confused the hell out of me. I had watched this guide so figured I was prepared. Me and my fiancé had a kerfuffle outside the door that resulted in both of us dying after placing the key. Did you know the interior door opens a set amount of time after the first door? I thought it opened once you got near it. Anyways after respawning and having lost some time, I got to work on the puzzle while she was moving as many chests outside as she could. After finding all 3 medallions my 3 symbols were: Chalice Lock and key Key and lock. However the 4th pillar, every single side had some orientation of chains. There wasn't for example.. One with a chalice 2 keys and 2 locks. Any idea what was going on in this one? A bug maybe?
Ahoy there! Sorry to hear you had a rough run through the vault. Aye, we did know that there is a set time between putting in the key and the door opening. We forgot to mention that in the video :( As for the puzzle not working out, we have heard of people running into bugs like that in the vaults. It sounds like you were one of those unfortunate pirates. Hopefully your next try is much smoother! Good luck pirate!
@@RareThief appreciate the response! Yeah I'll definitely know going forward, make sure the area is clear before activating, lol. Regarding the potential bug, do you think it best at that point to disregard the images and work off guessing based on last pillar possibilities? Like maybe just trial and error chalice solutions since my first was chalice?
Aye, reverse engineering the puzzle will work. Usually people do it using one medallion as you can narrow down the solution to two of the final pillar's faces. But it is possible with none. Hopefully it just works next time!
I opened the first door and watched this video come to the second one and waiting for it to open then i realized its opend and closed while im watching how so solve
so basically for this type of vault the best way to do it is to get 4 people to help first you grab all the chests while someone experienced does the puzzle. then when you get all the chests and trinkets to the door you grab the gold last. also its gonna be a pain in the ass getting your loot to your ship so make sure you parked close. and if you followed most the steps you should walk out with a lot of chests plus the puzzle chest and a tiny bit of loose change. oh and i found that being stuck isn't so bad because you can still grab coins and it gets everyone coins.
i dont think i can express how your channel and website have pretty much been my guide throughout my time on SoT thanks alot

Oh shoot! Yeah, that's a safe assumption based on experience from the Tall Tales.
I made 220k out of that vault located in devils ridge
Nice job pirate! That is an impressive amount of gold!
thx for help :D
No problem! Happy sailing!
very good video :) thanks
No problem! Good luck on your next Treasure Vault raid :) Cheers!
Thank you so much for the guide! I didn't know what to do for the fourth pillar, it doesn't help when you don't find the third medallion though XD
@@RareThief now that, is a brilliant idea
@@amber-chan6366 Good luck on your next Treasure Vault run! Cheers!
Wait so the timer starts when u walk in or when u take ur first thing out of the vault
When the door to the Vault opens.
How many chests do you neet to sell to get those Ancient tribute sails?
When the timer start? Is it immediately after opening the vault?
After the door that leads directly to the Treasure Vault is done opening. Not the door the key unlocks that leads you to the Treasure Vault.
Rare Thief Ok! Thank you! I’ve never timed it, but I just wanted to make sure before I tried to do one again
I literally didn't know about the puzzle so imma have to do it again 🤣
Haha! The puzzle is worth it to get that chest :) The chest is worth a lot and counts towards a commendation that will unlock some fancy sails! Good luck on your next attempt pirate!
Why the mission is no showing for me ?
You can't purchase it from the Gold Hoarders?
@@RareThiefyes
You need to be level 25 Gold Hoarder as well.
Sometimes the GH representative can not show all the possible voyage types.
i had a mermaids vault totem key thing but do you need one to open the actual door to the vault itself?
Yeah, you need to use the key to open the Vault. The Vaults cannot be opened without one.
@@RareThief even the second door?
Is it random what type of keys you get? For example I’ve only gotten silver keys so far and I don’t know if I have to do something to get a gold key?
If you purchase the voyage from the Gold Hoarders the key tier is tied to your Gold Hoarder reputation. The higher you are the more likely you are to get a Gold Key. If you purchase it from Larinna, I don't think you can get a Gold Key. We've been getting Stone Keys from her.
Can you do it without medallions? There are only 4 possibilities told by the four sides of the last column
Aye! It is totally possible to do it with less. You can deduce the correct symbols by flipping the blocks around.
quick question, are these infinite or is it a one and done for every key?
Ahoy there! It’s one and done per key. You’ll have to do another voyage to get another key. You should be well prepared now though! Good luck :)
Do the medallions change place every time or not?
Yep! They are not guaranteed to be in the same exact spots, but you can usually expect to find one down low, in the middle and up high :)
Thanks
No problem! Happy sailing!
Whats The diffrence between doing The combo and finding the coins
You want to find the medallions to help you complete the combination. Each time you place a medallion in the puzzle table, it reveals a symbol needed to complete the combination.
Can you explain how to get the Gold or Tier totem how do i need to Upgrade im not the best in english
You have a higher change of getting a Gold Key if you are level 50 or higher in Gold Hoarder.
I am a new player just purchased it last week which voyage is this did u start this voyage how did u get the key and stuff
Ahoy there! Welcome to the sea :) You have to be level 25 reputation with the Gold Hoarder Trading Company before you can purchase the voyage. Once you are 25, you will find the Wayfinder Voyage for sale when speaking with any Gold Hoarder representative.
@@RareThief thank you another doubt this green indicator shows up when i only go for an open crew which indicates my mic is on or off but when i am on a closed crew and meet other pirates out there i cant understand whether its on or off there is no indication like before any idea abt that
Thank you so much dog
We got you!
Does the puzzle not work for anyone else?
Sicc. Thanks!
Always happy to help! 🙂
i got into the gold vault (im gold horder lvl 63) and as i was putting in the final medalion the door closed, i got out but with the tribute chest still inside
After finding all 3 medallions my 3 symbols were:
Chalice
Lock and key
Key and lock.
We forgot to mention that in the video :(
As for the puzzle not working out, we have heard of people running into bugs like that in the vaults.
Oh no! Sorry to hear that pirate :( Hopefully you are now ready to tackle your next vault. Good luck!
how do you find the key?
so basically for this type of vault the best way to do it is to get 4 people to help first you grab all the chests while someone experienced does the puzzle. then when you get all the chests and trinkets to the door you grab the gold last. also its gonna be a pain in the ass getting your loot to your ship so make sure you parked close. and if you followed most the steps you should walk out with a lot of chests plus the puzzle chest and a tiny bit of loose change. oh and i found that being stuck isn't so bad because you can still grab coins and it gets everyone coins.
Yep, that's a great strategy right there :)
How much does the chest sell for
It's base value is 3-4k gold.
Now do you need to light the flames?
Because I had gotten all the madalions and turned all the blocks but it didn't open
Hmm, no lighting of braziers necessary. Did you press the enter solution button on the puzzle table after you correctly rotated the blocks?
@@RareThief yes.
And the thing didn't open and I double checked the blocked and it didnt work
@@justultrra3568 you probably oriented them wrong
