Now, all four main personnel of this show are gone, Mike Darow (1933-1996), Sandy Hoyt (1939-2002), Alex Trebek (1940-2020), and Alan Kalter (1943-2021).
Mike Darow (January 8, 1933 - December 7, 1996), Alexander Morrell Hoyt (March 21, 1939 - August 5, 2002), George Alexander Trebek (July 22, 1940 - November 8, 2020), Alan Robert Kalter (March 21, 1943 - October 4, 2021).
Taping locations for The $128,000 Question: 1976-77: The Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, New York. 1977-78: Global Television Network Studios in Don Mills, Ontario, a suburb of Toronto, Canada.
This was a "contemporary" version of Norman Leyden's original themes for "THE $64,000 QUESTION"; these are the 1976-'77 orchestrations by Charles Randolph Grean, featuring various cues; "Opening Theme", "Contestant Introduction", "Entering the Booth", "Think Music ["Suspense"]", "Closing Theme (part one)/Promotional Consideration credits", "Ticket/Contestant Information" bed; "Closing Theme" (part two). This was during the period when Mike Darrow emceed the show in New York.
When Alex Trebek took over as host and the show moved to Toronto at the studios of Global Television, Grean's music package was re-arranged and re-recorded by world-famous Canadian trumpet player Guido Basso.
I watched it on then-ABC affiliate WLKY in Louisville every Tuesday night at 7:30pm for the first season and every Wednesday night at the same timeslot for the second season, which has been a CBS affiliate since 1990, and which has carried other syndicated game shows such as: -Let's Make a Deal (ABC daytime and syndicated nighttime) -Catch Phrase -To Tell the Truth '80 -The Challengers -Break the Bank '85 -Strike it Rich '86 -Concentration -Tic Tac Dough (Martindale/Caldwell) -The Joker's Wild (Barry/Cullen) -Wheel of Fortune -Jeopardy! ...to name a few!
I got alot of favorites......Match Game, Price is Right, Joker's Wild, Tic Tac Dough, Hollywood Squares, Wheel of Fortune (the old school NBC channel 5 version), Sale of the Century, Starcade, Press Yo Luck, Card Sharks, Let's Make A Deal, and The $25,000 Pyramid!!!!
I recall seeing this in NYC on Staurday Nights on channel 5(WNEW), ca 7PM. When we moved to Louisiana, WBRZ(2) in Baton Rouge had it on Wednesdays at 6:30PM. And I recall Viacom distributed this show.
"The $128,000 Question" (1976-78) was the unsuccessful sequel to the 1950's classic quiz, "The $64,000 Question" (1955-59). Former NBA star Jerry Lucas (1963-74) was a contestant in season one. He won $32,000 on the category of the Bible.
When we were young, we sure remember watching The $128,000 Question, when KPHO-TV5 Phoenix aired this show Sunday Nights at 6:30 PM in 1976, but this game show did not last long as it ran only two seasons. And this theme song heard, uses all music elements played into this game show's theme song from this orchestration.
When I was young, I sure remember watching The $128,000 Question, when WLKY-TV 32 aired this show Tuesday Nights at 7:30 PM for the first season immediately following Concentration with the late Jack Narz and Wednesday Nights at 7:30 PM for the second season.
2:48-3:41, "Join us next week when Barbara Ann Eddy will be going for $64,000 in order to qualify for our season-ending super playoff for a possible $128,000, we hope, on The $128,000 Question. Goodnight and so long everybody!"-Mike Darrow (Season 1) and Alex Trebek (Season 2). "All contestants will receive the home game version of The $128,000 Question. Promotional consideration furnished by the Hotel Toronto, a Western International hotel. This is Alan Kalter (and Sandy Hoyt) speaking!"-Alan Kalter (Season 1) and Sandy Hoyt (Season 2). (Insert Viacom "V of Doom" logo and music)
SCTV did a spoof of The $128,000 Question called $129,000 Question. It was hosted by that smarmy Moe Green (Harold Ramis, God rest his soul) and Joe Flaherty was the hapless contestant who was in the booth being asked questions by Moe who would deliberately say "Your wife" many times to Joe's contestant role. It was funny.
The reason for that bug was because the clip was taken from a bio series on CBC called "Life & Times". The particular bio it's from is the one on Alex Trebek.
2:28-2:46, "If you feel you qualify as an expert on any subject at all, not just the ones you see on our program, then drop us a line. Tell us first your regular occupation, then your category as an expert and send your name and address along with a photograph to: Contestants P.O. Box 1280 Radio City Station New York, NY 10019 That's (repeated address). Include your phone number and photographs cannot be returned!"-Alan Kalter (Season 1) and Sandy Hoyt (Season 2).
But WLKY in Louisville carried both the Darrow and Trebek versions! During the time that Darrow hosted, WLKY aired it at 7:30pm every Tuesday night, and when Trebek took over for Season 2, WLKY moved it to Wednesday nights at the same time slot: 7:30pm. The irony of that was The $128,000 Question always aired right after Concentration!
Judging by the CBC-TV "bug" on the slide this show must have been shown more recently in Canada than the U.S. I vaguely remember a short lived syndie version in the U.S. which I think used this theme..
I think that was a special that aired on the CBC in Canada about Alex Trebek, God rest his soul, who hosted The $128,000 Question for its second and final season in 1977-78.
sugarbear522, i get what u sayin now, i probably would be scared of the logo myself if i 1st seen the logo. kind of getting off subject, what is your favorite game show?
RIP, Mike Darrow and Alex Trebek.
Also, RIP Sandy Hoyt and Alan Kalter.

I'll be damned... I've remembered this song from the time when it was NEW. I haven't heard it until 8 JULY 2009. Thanks for posting this!

It was supposed to be the remake of the $64,000 question, however the $100,000 name that tune just premiered so they had to doubled the top prize

Performed by The Charles Randolph Greane Sound! I even had the single (Ranwood Records). :)
not only that but the format of the numerals shows it's not a US based program. We use a comma where you use a decimal point and vice versa
It was on in New York - WNEW channel 5 saturday about 6 PM - I think followed my Jack Barry's Break the Bank.
Then-ABC affiliate WLKY (now a CBS affiliate) carried both the Darrow and Trebek versions.
SCTV did a spoof of The $128,000 Question called $129,000 Question. It was shown on KCRA channel 3 at 7:30 PM. Not sure what day. If anybody knows for sure, please comment.
Extreme long time I heard this. TYVM
The reason for that bug was because the clip was taken from a bio series on CBC called "Life & Times". The particular bio it's from is the one on Alex Trebek.
Ironically, Mike Darrow was no stranger to Toronto-having been one of 1050 CHUM's many DJs.
I recently re-bought the home game of this show on eBay!

sugarbear522 i know what you talking about. the dreaded V of doom. when i was growing up, i wasn't scared of the logo.
This theme song was from the original $64,000 Question, though reorchestrated for the 70s.
And that rearranged theme song was recorded by Charles Randolph Grean for the first season and Guido Basso for the second season.
It was seen Mondays @ 6:30 on KHOU (CBS 11-Houston, TX). But we only had the Mike Darrow edition.
But WLKY in Louisville carried both the Darrow and Trebek versions! Do you have the TV guide listing? We had both editions. The second was probably on another channel or day.
And does anyone have the promos for The $128,000 Question on WLKY?

I would be scared as God knows what when I saw the closing of this show as a 2 year old......solely based on who distributed the show. Hint. Hint.
It was Viacom that distributed The $128,000 Question.
lucky you
