    Good video dude! It’s great to see a video from a first time Hinderer owner, I always see videos from folks who have owned them before, so you’ve got a pure perspective. Keep it up! 🤠

    Regarding the thumbstuds: rather than pushing out at a 90* or even 45* angle (like you do on a Demko), push straight forward towards the front (kinda aiming at the pivot screw). It’ll fire! You can also use your index finger on the back stud (in conjunction w/ your thumb on the front stud) to offer a bit of extra help. Also, you can also use your index to “hook” and pull “back” on the flipper (as your thumb uses the stud... this is a great way to ensure a good “slow roll” on a Hinderer w/ a stout detent optimized for flipping). Lastly, it may be that there is some oil in the detent hole. That can create a very sticky/stout feeling detent (almost like it’s vacuum-sealed). A good cleaning may net good results.
    Regarding the ergos and cutting angle: you are just so familiar with the feel (and straight angle) of Demkos that Rick Hinderer’s organic shape and approach and how he presents the blade for cutting (ie, the downward angle) feels alien to you. But you’ll get used to it. I am in the exact opposite boat. I was raised on Hinderers (I’ve had more over the years than I can remember) and they are extremely intuitive to my hand... and when I started getting into Demkos I had to adjust how “straight” everything felt. Ha! But I adjusted and now love the approach of both makers. Just depends on my mood.
    Good luck and don’t give up on your Hinderer(s). Almost certainly it just needs some dialing-in and some some familiarity with/in your hand.

    If the scales was that metallic blue on both sides that knife would be sick but still not a Hogue.

    I don’t own an XM 3.5”, but I have a very hard time using the thumbstuds on my Eklipses (and the ZT 0562). I think they’re mostly designed as blade stops, which is why the Non-Flipper versions are so popular, because the detent is lighter on those Ive heard. Great video BTW, and the Blue on Blue looks amazing!

    Are you doing the forward thumb-flick correctly? Shouldn’t you be using the meat of your thumb, rather than the nail? I have done a reverse flick on some of my Hinderers, but they are somewhere between difficult and impossible! Using the thumb nail to operate a thumb stud is IMHO an incorrect method. Hinderers require moderate force to overcome the detent with the thumb studs.

      @@pocketpriorities I thought it was maple, absolutely stunning, I'd have it covered with tempered glass. Nice knife collection too :) I buy whatever knife I'm curious about and move em along if they're not for me. Price not withstanding. No better way to learn than owning them. Happy New Year!

    The thumb stud was not for opening it but for a lock stop.

      Hm, not sure about that, how is this thumbstud different from a non flipper version, which only can be deployed with the thumbstud?

    • @tyarnold4088
      @tyarnold4088 11 днів тому

      @pocketpriorities he's right. The non flipper versions are designed with a weaker detent.

  • @CNYKnifeNut
    @CNYKnifeNut Рік тому +1

    The detent will definitely soften up a bit, but only to a point. My Xm24 has been a heavy user for over a year and it thumb flicks perfectly, but can't be reverse flicked. Not even close.
    The trick I use to thumb roll is to hook my pointer finger around the flipper tab just enough to break the detent while simultaneously rolling it out with my thumb.
    The 3.5" XM18 is probably my least favorite Hinderer, but the XM24 is one of my favorite knives.

    I have found the detents on the non-flipper versions are lighter and much easier to thumb or finger flick. I cannot do either on my flipper XM-18.

    • @pocketpriorities
      @pocketpriorities  Рік тому

      Nice, yeah for some reason the flipper turns out to be extra sensitive to lockbar pressure too, I moved my index finger and got better at it over time.

    Use the meat of your finger and thumb to deploy via the thumb studs... your finger nails have no grip and it will hurt you everytime.

    Use it & find out how crappy Rick Hinderer does his heat treatment. People only recently found out because nobody was actually using them.. then weasel Rick legally went after some small time guy making blades out of his garage who called Rick out on a bad heat treatment after using his Hinderer for testing. Instead of fixing the heat treatment, Rick claims it's fine and continues to peddle bunk knives

      If people stopped saying bad and started saying soft it would likely get the point across better. I wouldn't say mine is bad but it is for sure soft.

    • @doejon9424
      @doejon9424 Рік тому +1

      @@drunknnirish That's only part of the problem. Rick is very egotistical & highly narcissistic. He doesn't realize that out of 100 knives he ships out, only about 5 or 10 will actually be used for EDC. He's in a weird predicament because people simply buy his knives & let them sit *or* sell them for a profit right away on the secondary market (for the most part). But in Rick's mind.. many people buy & hard use his knives. Which simply is not true. More people would have complained years ago. He doesn't think he needs to change anything, including his "heat treatment recipe". People are like mindless Homer zombies with Hinderer folders.. "Must have - won't use". I've said this before and I'll say it again.. I have never met anyone who legitimately used a Hinderer as EDC. Including several knife shows / gun shows spanning over a decade. People just don't carry & use them. It's more of a bragging right or a right of passage for a collector to say "Ya, I got a Hinderer & it's one I actually like, not just one that was available". Anyway Rick sued some extremely small time knife maker because he released a video (with proof) about how lame the heat treatment is on Hinderer knives. Talk about insecurities.

    • @drunknnirish
      @drunknnirish Рік тому +1

      I can show you a gen 4 xm-18 3.5” that has been carried and used more than 95% of knives out there. That is how I know the 20CV is soft as hell, a total pain in the ass to get a decent edge on, and that it is a problem.
      People who don’t own or carry a knife imo don’t understand the issue regardless of the side they fall on.
      As a side note you are right very few get used because when people see mine they always have the same response of “wow you actually use this thing”.

    • @anthonyberardi8904
      @anthonyberardi8904 Рік тому +1

      @@drunknnirish if the steel is so soft as you claim, then why isn’t it easy to sharpen? That doesn’t make sense, the higher the HRC, literally means it is Harder. Soft 20CV is no different than S35VN in my opinion (slightly worse wear resistant, yet More Toughness.) Whether that is good or bad, depends on what you’re going to use the knife for, etc. the only big name company I’m aware of that heat treats “correctly” is Spyderco. And yes I have plenty of experience using ZTs so-called “soft” heat treat also, and they work fine for me. 🤷‍♂️ also, they outsource their HT to Peters, and call for a spec of 59-61 IIRC (like most others). So the 58.5 or whatever it was wasn’t far off.
