The PO sneaking suit was super figgin cool and totally unique at the time. The legs kinda threw me off as it was kinda weird that the legs were armored, but the rest of the suit isn't, iirc. My fav sneaking suit is the PO suit's evolution, the PW sneaking suit. It is basically the same, but without the random leg armor it just looks sleeker, which would go much better for sneaking around as opposed to heavy armor around the legs makin a bunch of noise. Everything about the PW suit is just so damn clean, and seeing it in GZ was such a treat.

I think the two psp episodes are really underrated but I loved them. Also I think the low performance psp hardware gave them some kind of nostalgic mood that reminds the first ps1 original metal gear solid.

The fps wasnt a result of low power hardware as both games can run at a constant 30 fps on actual psp hardware, Konami just locked the framerate to 20 fps for some odd reason.

@@christiancryers Portable Ops is like a smaller Ground Zeroes (which I prefer over linear).
PW is linear like 3, 4 and Rising. That's not a bad thing. But PW is especially linear besides bossfights. Very small tunnel like levels. Even 3, 4 and MGR opened up sometimes.
I know it's the PSP restrictions but still PO did it better imo. If they remake PW it should be either like PO/GZ, or be like the other linear games. Hell maybe give open world another shot. But they should take inspiration from the likes of GTA and Ghost Recon Wildlands. MGSV kind of did it badly.

There is one thing that most people don't realise when comparing Portable Ops and Peace Walker. It's not an entirely fair comparison. When the PSP launched in 2004, to save battery life Sony limited game developers to using 266MHz of the PSP's CPU power. This limitation was removed in 2007 and games made after that time can use the full 333MHz of power that the PSP has. So Peace Walker was for all intents and purposes developed for a more powerful system.
I think it was a mistake for the developers to use a 3D camera for this game. It wasn't a standard in the series to have this at this point, with the only game to do so being MGS3: Subsistence. On a system with one analog stick a fixed camera like Snake Eater would have made far more sense. This also goes for the PSP version of Peace Walker.
Regarding the canonicity of Portable Ops, in an interview in 2014 Kojima said that it takes place in the timeline but that not all of the details are canon. He went on to say that for him the difference is between the game he directed and the games he didn't. Portable Ops isn't included in the Deja Vu mission in Ground Zeroes or the official timeline released in 2015. The only thing is, if it indeed isn't canon, why didn't Kojima just say straight out in 2014 that it isn't canon when asked about it? The whole thing just doesn't make any sense.
It isn't helped by Peace Walker appearing to have its cake and eat it. It simultaneously acts as if Portable Ops isn't canon but also acts as if Big Boss went through the character changes he did in Portable Ops, with him leading a group of soldiers at the start. Going from MGS3 to this is a pretty jarring transition, as he has shown absolutely no inclination to be a leader at the end of MGS3. Portable Ops helps to fill that gap. If Kojima wanted to make it non-canon he should have done a better job of explaining this in Peace Walker. This is coming from someone who love Peace Walker and has put hundreds of hours into it. That said, there are parts of the story of Portable Ops that I'm definitely glad aren't canon, which I won't discuss since you wanted to avoid spoilers.
Portable Ops is actually a better game for me to play through than it is for most at the moment. I recruited loads of soldiers on my first run through the game, so my units are filled up now. So I can just play through the game and not recruit anyone except for Johnny.

For your first scripted work, you knocked it out of the park! It's great to see such an underappreciated title to get the recognition it rightfully deserves. On another note, the whole issue with fans deeming non-Kojima directed titles to be mediocre or *not worth* playing is unfair. Games like MG Acid, Ghost Babel, Rising, and Portable Ops were both faithful and unique in their own respect. The only outlier would have to be Metal Gear Survive, but that was nothing more than a cash grab in my opinion. Hope you get to make more videos in this fashion :DDDD

Portable ops was such a great game, and is super important to the series, lorewise and gameplaywise. For the gameplay, it gave us our first taste of building our own army, with capturing soldiers and even playing as them(Python was so damn fun). But it also gave us a ton of super important lore that shaped the future. One of my fav aspects is how it hammers in what The Biss was lamenting, "yesterday's friends become tomorrow's enemies". After MGS3 while still in FOX, Snake fought alongside a soldier who would become one of Snake's most trusted friends, who Snake had believed died. In PO his old friend, Python, is still alive and tasked with killing Snake. This whole shit shocks and deeply hurts Snake. It helps to hammer in his idea of The Boss's will, which he still hasn't his idea yet. Only later, after meeting and defeating Gene, does Snake get the idea for Outer Heaven, born from Gene's dream he passes on to Snake in the form of "Army's Heaven". After fighting his once great friend to the death, and shown new light through Gene, does Big Boss finally have his own interpretation of The Boss's will, which was Gene's original idea tweaked a bit, Outer Heaven. Then there is the other just kinda cool connections and nods, Roy Campbell and Johnny just to name a couple. The biggest being Null/Frank Yeager who would later be Grey Fox. This game is just amazing. Even tho it has been demoted to "a spinoff or sorts", the Master Books all say the same thing. Basically while the game PO is not canon, the events within, namely the entire San Heironymo incident IS INDEED CANON.

Great video! I always felt that PO/PO+ was underrated.
Man, I feel old remembering this. I played the PSP saga to hell and back, and both of the PO games were no exception. I remember just being a lad back in the day, inside a now closed game shop near where my dad lives. And I remember being in that store, looking at all sorts of games (even an Ehrgeiz moveset booklet) and had to pick between MGA2 and PO. I picked the former first, but I picked up PO later on.
From what I can remember, I used to dislike PO for being too difficult and PO+ for the OSP stipulation. In PO, you can die very fast. In PO+ you’re a sponge with certain characters (I call them legacy characters) but PO+ has issues I’ll get to later. As far as the story goes, I felt it was simple and easy to follow despite not remembering much due to my PSP being broken for years now. But I remember thinking Null was cool, I loved the environment you fought Python in, Raxa was something else, and I really liked how Steve Blum portrayed Gene “SOLDIERS! Hear my words!” I’d argue he has a lot more charisma due to his voice actor. I still consider PO canon even if it’s up for debate and Miller has that snarky comment at the beginning of PO.
Now for PO+, I never got to experience the online portion of it :/. But I did greatly enjoy the nature of the levels, being randomly generated. It reminded me a lot of Infinity Mode from Coded Arms, another PSP game from Konami that was a 1st person dungeon crawler. It might as well be called PO VR missions, because that’s essentially what it was. I enjoyed it a lot despite only having 47 levels across 4 difficulties (4 easy, 8 normal, 15 hard, 20 extreme) despite easy always having the same 4 levels. I enjoyed building up a team of powerful soldiers and even getting intel up so high that items were always marked in the pause menu or your minimap, then going to town with a delivery man soldier. Good times.
I also want to say that PO/PO+ >PW/MGSV when it comes to soldier diversity. PO and PO+ have the most diverse cast of soldiers in the entire the series. I love MSF and DDs designs, don’t get me wrong. But I’d say that the former was more iconic because you could play as SO MANY different types of characters, even made up ones like the female ocelot unit!

Adding another comment here regarding recruitment (and other fun facts):
There’s actually a little known detail (maybe not these days) where you can mass recruit soldiers in both PO/PO+ in one go. You know how you have a sneaking team split up into multiple groups? Your teammates will actually stay on the map in cardboard boxes. If you knock out a soldier near the box and hit the box, a red “!” will appear and the screen will turn black for a second. Afterwards it will go back to normal, with the soldier recruited. There’s actually no limit to this trick, you can recruit literally every soldier in the level using one box, which is still much faster than just using the truck. The reason why this is so successful is that PO/PO+ can be cheesed with the knock mechanic, where if you knock and get the enemies’ attention three times in a row, they will come sprinting to your position. Very helpful in Extreme difficulty.
Part of the reason why I have a love/hate relationship with PO+ is due to the OSP rule, which still persists even after you beat extreme mode. The weapons are there for online mode or boss rush mode, the former being shutdown and latter if you have a cleared save file from PO :/. It’s a needless restriction, imagine playing PW where you could bring back gear but never take it on missions. Some soldiers (Raiden, Gene, Null, Tengu) come equipped with melee weapons that CANNOT be removed, but that also means you have only 3 slots to work with.
I did find a means to cheat this with legacy characters, however. If a non legacy soldier dies in the field or loses stamina, they’re gone for good. But if a legacy character is gone, the next time you replay the difficulty they can be found as a prisoner and recruited again. Doing this after clearing special missions will allow them to spawn back in with their equipment, such as the MK.23 for Raiden or the M4 SOPMOD for Old Snake. As far as I’m aware, it’s the only instance in the entirety of PO+ where you can get these weapons without cheating. It’s very convoluted, though.
Speaking of legacy characters, you could even get Teliko and Venus (MGA1 and 2, respectively) as playable characters. It’s really neat fan service to have such a cast, and I think PO+ is the only Metal Gear game to have someone from almost every MG game prior to MGS4. Bosses from PO could also be unlocked, and man. They’re all inferior to Snake in every capacity 😂. PO is the poster child of “boss is level 999 tryhard when you fight them, is level 0 when you play as them.” Like I know it was probably due to PSP limitations, but come on! How cool would it have been to play as other bosses to their full capacity?
Python: cryogenic abilities and grenade launcher with cryo grenades that freeze your equipment. When you play as him? Dinky little grenade and the freeze effect for enemies is like three seconds.
Cunningham: railgun is slow and did pitiful damage.
Elsa/Ursula: I don’t even remember, no ESP’er abilities if I recall besides headhunter
Null: Mac10 and machete combo, can easily deflect bullets from the front. When you play as him? Can’t deflect bullets, nether can Raiden or Tengu
Gene: mind jacking and extremely fast throwing knives. When you play as him? Only a marginally better version of the Spetsnaz knife that shoots 5 knives in one, but with a pause in between -.-

I thought it was alright all those years back but I want to replay it.
The thing that stands out to me most in Portable Ops is that your soldiers actually have a notable gameplay function, and not only invisible spreadsheet powers. In Peace Walker and MGSV your soldiers are virtually useless on the field compared to Snake (and you can't swap them out on the field like in PO), serving mostly as score multipliers, aesthetics (female soldiers lol) and self-imposed difficulty. They simply move into the background of the management system, a system I do find addictive but also makes soldiers faceless and detaches you from the whole thing of managing an army. Peace Walker and MGSV don't get over the weird dissonance of being one-man infiltration simulators that also have you build up an army (but ultimately the army is just a more stacked radio support team?). Yet in Portable Ops you can walk around 'disguised' as a soldier, carry over bodies to boxes (yeah, the whole squad is sat in cardboard boxes, lol) and have your teammates handle the kidnapping. Some of the soldiers like boss characters have special items I think, but my memory is fuzzy.

In terms of sneaking suits, my favourite is probably MGS3 or GZ. I love that PO combines both suits in a way but im not a fan of the armoured legs, I wish their was a separate armoured syit for those legs instead. I like the torso of the PO suit more than the GZ one though.
The game has less content than Peace Walker on the bright side though it has way less grinding in PO.

At the time, Portable Ops was highly praised as the first portable game since Ghost Babel that delivered the standard gameplay style of Metal Gear. Since Metal Gear Acid took a turn base spin although interesting for in its own right.

Portable Ops is one of those games that gets better with multiple play throughs. When you’re on your second or third round, you don’t have to recruit (especially if you utilize the password system), and you can just focus on the sneaking.
I also prefer it to PW on the story front. Peace Walker leans a bit too heavy into Anime territory with its writing and voice direction. I get that was intentional. Kojima wanted it to appeal to the younger Japanese audience that were into portable systems, but I feel like it was a bit too late in the series for that kind of departure. PW feels like the odd one out now sandwiched between MGS4 and V (though I still very much enjoy it). Portable Ops has it’s fair share of Metal Gear silliness, but I think it’s well within the confines of the series standards prior to PW.

I think portable ops is kinda slept on, most people consider it pretty much non-canon and that makes me sad. The other thing that makes me sad is that no one wants to entertain my theory that Ghost Babel is canon if the Solid Snake in that story is actually Liquid Snake doing a bit of identity theft to procure a Metal Gear in the years between MG2 and MGS 😂

As a Metal Gear fan boi, I find the discussion of Portable Ops' canon status as one of the most infuriating, non-sensical debates because Kojima Production had multiple opportunities to "de-canonize" it in Guns of the Patriots, Peace Walker, & Ground Zeroes/Phantom Pain yet they never contradict its story. Not only that, there are even story details of Portable Ops that are even corroborated in those games such as:
    - The FOX Unit went rogue and then was dissolved in 1970 only to be replaced by FOXHOUND. In most closing timelines, that detail is almost always there.
    - The San Heironymo Incident happened in some form or another. In Peace Walker, Kaz mentions it by name and rejoices they can leave that memory behind them.
    - Colonel Volgin being hired by a "deviously cunning strategist" in the CIA to fire a Davy Crockett at OKB-745 with the plan of having The Boss killed from the start. That strategist was revealed in Peace Walker as Hot Coldman
    - Ocelot tracked down & assassinated the remaining Philosophers on the orders of Zero to steal the remaining half of the legacy. Ocelot confirms this to Venom in a tape.
    - Major Zero creates Cipher as a replacement organization of the Philosophers to fulfill his vision of the Boss' Will with founding members including himself, Big Boss, Para-Medic, and Sigint. EVA explains this in excruciating detail to Snake in MGS4 & these cutscenes even use clips from Portable Ops as she's explaining it.

There's actually x2 those many confirmations. I can't list them here, but one explicitly says Coldman ISN'T the strategist because Coldman was unaware of the true nature of the operation. The DCI Ocelot kills was the strategist.

So many weapons, so much Maps, so much Bossfights, so much customization and micro managing of your soldiers, this game was truly great and what MGS:V should have been, instead of an open world devoit of life, with lackluster ai, a boring villain and hideous storyline, like the body double which you mentioned. Kojima really spend too much money on making the game cinematic, the story felt really lackluster.

As far as your examples though, I'm not so sure it's as simple as all that. I look alot like my father did when he was my age, so it be pretty safe to assume its be the same for hal/huey. huey being a bastard though would probably be the reason why hal never knew about his fathers association with big boss, after all, he saw him more as a mean to better his metal gear tech. As far as big boss not mentioning to snake about venom....does it really matter? All snake knows is that he thought he killed big boss but he is alive. Besides, thats the entire point of him being the "phantom".

People question the canonicity of Big Boss and Campbell's relationship in Portable Ops? Isn't that just a prelude to how they were the original leader and second in command of Foxhound in the original Metal Gears, with Portable Ops overall acting as Foxhound's origin story as this ragtag military unit, that Big Boss had to pull together inorder to take down FOX gone rogue?
Like yeah, chronologically later games don't really touch up on what sort of relationship Campbell would have had with Big Boss, but being top officers of the same special ops unit they obviously would have known each other and I don't think Campbell needs much of an excuse for not wanting to spill all the beans of his past relationship with his old superior having gone renegade later in life.
Couple of things that personally bother me a lot more when it comes to Portable Ops' place in canon, is firstly that it's technically the first chronological appearance of a Metal Gear weapon that is addressed as such, yet that gets completely glossed over in Peace Walker, even though the Metal Gear name and weapons associated with it comes up a whole lot in it, especially during conversations between Big Boss and Huey. Secondly, it establishes how the plan to assasinate the Boss in Snake Eater, starting from Volgin launching the nuke on Soviet soil at the beginning of the game, was all an inside job planned out by a single mastermind, who is never directly named or revealed after (it was at one point implied or speculated to have potentially been Coldman from Peace Walker, but Coldman is never confronted over it, or treated in such a way as to facilitate that idea).

Isn't the Shagohod a metal gear? Just not a bipedal metal gear like Peace Walker or Zeke?
For the second point though it's a retcon. Originally Zero was supposed to be the mastermind but then mgs4 changed that. So now people just assume it's Coldman which makes sense but not addressed.

    • @jondoe7036
      @jondoe7036 Рік тому

@@NobleBoss No, Shagohod's an alternative take on the same concept of a weapon capable of executing autonomous and unassisted nuclear strike, but the story makes it abundantly clear it is not a Metal Gear.
Metal Gears are all more or less based on Granin's original concept and design for a bipedal walking tank, that would function as the "missing link" between infantry and artillery and they're all designated as "Metal Gears", with arguable exception of Peace Walker, which was Metal Gear in everything but the name.
