    I’m currently in recruit training at 17 years old and moving into my second week of commando phase. From my experience as one of the younger lads at ctc, I would definitely recommend that the younger lads should think about joining around the age of 19-23. I feel a lot more disadvantaged to the rest of that lads in my troop due to their life experience, confidence and leadership experience. I struggled a lot through out phase one and found it harder than most older lads did. The Royal Marines isn’t a job, it’s a lifestyle and most younger lads don’t realise that.

      My son is 15 and is a PO2nd Class in his Sea Cadet unit. He’s already 6’2”. Should he wait a couple of years to finish his growing? He’s supposed to be around 6’ 6” when he’s done. It’s hard to keep up when your growth spurts are 3” at a time. And recommendations on how to improve his running times?

    When I was 16 wanted to join the paras, I'm from Colchester which is their hometown and one of my teachers spent 6 years in 2 para, anyway he took me up to the merville barracks one day just to talk and get some info about what its like to some of his still serving mates who by this time were mostly senior NCO's as he was in around late 90s early 2000s, when I asked about joining at 16 they all said not too, even the ones who had joined at 16 them selves. For a few main reasons being, at 16 your body may not be ready to be put through the training unlike at 18-20 years old where you are almost fully developed, two getting some more qualifications behind you by doing another 2 years in education is a good idea just in case the worst happens and you cant join for whatever reason you have more options, also good for when you leave. The final main one that they all seemed to agree on is that you are giving up some of your best years of your childhood so enjoy them and think about the military say 2 years later once you have also matured a bit and got a bit more life experience.
    This is just my experience talking to paras about joining at 16 so yea not the marines but the same still applies I imagine, not saying its the right opinion or anything but someone may find it useful. That being said I'm now 18 in the process of joining the marines after 2 years of college and I feel like I 100% made the right choice as I've had extra time to get my fitness up and just matured as a person more.

      This is a great contribution, Adam. Thanks for spending the time to write this, I enjoyed reading it. I found the most interesting point is the provision of your younger golden years. The military isn't going anywhere, it'll always be there. When you join you essentially give your life to the military and they decide the course of your service life. So why not pursue an education, travelling, a hobby, live a little by your terms and then commit your life to the military. I would even suggest joining in your early twenties is preferable?!
      Considering this comment mate you seem like a mature, switched on individual and perhaps even joining as an officer would be attainable for you. Just a suggestion to explore if you wish. But anyway, good luck with your application pal 👍

    I joined at 16 back in 1988, found it harder than the older lads especially in the field only being about 9 stone piss wet through.
    Passed out as an original with 552 troop on the corps birthday 88. Left as a C/Sgt in 2011, can be done but completely depends on the individual but shouldn’t be put off joining as a turbo sprog, the corps made me what I am today, a proper nails, essence middle aged clunge magnet👊👊

    I think people forget that the Royal Marines won’t disappear in 2 years etc. No need to rush into it, but if you want to of course do that but you are still incredibly young and waiting until you’re a bit older wouldn’t do any harm

    I joined as a Junior Marine in 85 and felt like a fish out if water. Had a great career with the Corps and I would do it all again but probably have waited until I was 18-23.
    There's a lot to be said for getting some life experience and being physically and mentally strong.
    Each to their own, if you pass out before 18 years old you'll miss out on Operations anyway and sit on rear party until you come of age.

    If you’re taking care of yourself , physically and you’re in TOP shape, is it too late to join at 30 years old ? I have a plan for a football career in my 20’s but I know for a fact I’m naturally gifted with athleticism so biologically I wouldn’t be 30 years old id be more like 23 in body

    • @georgemc6441
      @georgemc6441 2 роки тому

      Lad you’re thinking too far ahead into the future, if you’re naturally gifted at football and have a chance at pursuing that then 100% do that. Then at around 25-28 if you want to try the marines still then they aren’t going anywhere. But prioritise first, not many people are good enough for a football career
