It's Joel I’d check one out that’s the only car I wish I would have considered before getting my Z4. Jeremy Clarkson got one at least worth checking out.
I have had an M240i in mineral grey with red leather for three years. It is an awesome car and always puts a smile 😊 on my face. It is very fast and understated which I like, you won’t be disappointed if you buy one.
picked one up a 6 months ago, same color scheme (but all black interior) and couldn't be happier. I smile every day driving this thing. I have the manual version (very hard to find in the US, I was very lucky) and put a remus catback exhaust on it. Sounds and drives like a dream! Great daily, and it's fast as shit when you want it to be 🙌🏼
What no one takes about with this car and i only noticed when driving a 4 and 5 series is how good the visibility is. Apart from the front pillars all your see around you is glass. The rear window fills the mirror completely. In the other cars you end up feeling a lot more enclosed if that makes sense.
I have had my M240i for 2.5yrs and love it. Perfect all rounder for a daily car, unlike an M2 which is more of a weekender. I tested the M235i alongside the M240i and the B58 engine was noticeably better. Also, recommend once you’ve narrowed the options down, then drive the top two back to back so the experiences are fresh in your mind!! Nice video 👍🏻
Yeah. I'm 18 months in one now and agree. Comfortable enough to be a decent daily and beastly enough when you want it to be. Straight 6, RWD, sensible display and a real handbrake - wonder if I'll ever see that again in a 2 sized vehicle? The twins scroll turbo was as much a revelation to me as it appears to have been to Joel but does die off a little at the top. Meh by that stage I'm usually tying to work out where my stomach has gone anyways. All it needs it a proper diff imo and it would be perfect. Not dull at all - Joel's copious use of his heavy right foot and cheesy grin would suggest he's being a little tongue in cheek. ;)
I have had my M240i from new for around 8 months. Love it, defo not dull. Took it on a track day in Feb. Nothing could beat it, my mates manual M140i couldn’t keep up.
I daily a m240i and it’s far from dull, great cars in a reasonably priced package, yes it’s not a true m car but it’s still a great bit of kit you can have lots of fun in when needed. I’ve never heard anyone say they was disappointed with buying one
If you think a 240i is dull you’ve probably been pretty lucky with cars you’ve experienced, I’ve got a z4 3.0i too and I’d swap to one of those in a heart beat, can get a 235i for £15,000 now
I had a testdrive with a M2 Competition last week. The car is super fast, probably as fast as my Corvette C6, but by far not as emotional as I would like. Even if Z4 is slower it makes not less fun as this modern digital very quick cars. Defenitely suggestion for you, try a Porsche 981 S or GTS. This are amazing cars.
LOVE MY 2021 M240I x drive!!!! This car is FAST. Handles like a dream. Looks so sexy and is a real size coupe. Not a dumb 4dr gran coupe that BMW is making tons of.
I just bought a 66 plate m240i pretty low spec but only 10,000 miles on the clock, estoril blue with red interior and i love it. I had an alfa GT 3.2V6 previous to this car which will be sorely missed but couldn't think of a better replacement
I just bought a 66 m240i convertible in black from bmw sytner pick it up Friday it’s only done 21,000 miles full bmw history tell me I am in for a treat I traded my fiesta eco boost in towards the price before the wet belt went bang on those engines .
@@ells-aviation it sounds good but it’s not particularly loud, I’ve gone from a 3.2 Alfa v6 from about 18 years ago so that sounded a lot better it took a bit of getting used to the m240i. It also pumps the engine noise through the speakers which I lost since getting the sound system upgraded. Obvs there’s things you can do to the exhaust to make it louder
Extremely scary, like I’m a BMW fan till death. But BMW was not playing around when they made the M240i. Shits fast as hell with bolt ons. I have a friend who has a grey putting out 480hp and shit feels faster than 480hp. He’s is AWD as well. Like when he accelerates I can feel the seat belt tight lol. It’s a bullet of a car
great video. i've been eyeing one of these for a while because it seems they could function superbly as a daily while stile being enjoyable to take out for a spirited drive. i haven't heard of any major issues on this b58 platform unlike the very common oil leaks along with the charge pipe issues you get on the N55 so that's an even bigger plus to spend the extra cash on one. that combination of digital and analog dials on the 2018+ models looks beautiful to me but I agree with you that the M2 does look nicer and 'meaner' in a sense. cheers mate
No denying it's fast, thing's rapid! German cars are great but a lot of them don't have souls and I think this fits that bracket. When you think of an E46 M3 that thing has so much soul, modern BMWs German cars in general are so clinical. One thing that it can't be is raw, it's too bulked up with tech. If that car was completely stripped out racecar style it might be a bit more up my street 😂 Nice video Joel can't wait for more
@Rubedo Alaberti Sorry I wasn't saying to use a racecar as a daily, the point I was trying to make is that it's built to be a performance car and performance cars should have personality the M240 just doesn't have any. Stripping out all the BS and having something a tad more raw was my idea of adding personality to a performance car. But yeah nobody wants to drive a racecar as a daily
Totally, but still having the Z4 and also getting an M6 - they will be my raw cars. The M240i seems to be a good in between. But need to try some other cars too
The M240i is one of the best BMWs, it’s the real successor of the BMW M3 E46. It’s a fast as hell stock, but with a tune? Piping? Bolt ons? You’d legit have a bullet of a car, I can’t wait to get one next year. I myself drive a 228i AWD S package and for a 4 cyl it’s fast, when I first drove it I was surprised on how fast it was a nimble and min sport plus? A totally different car. 2 series are by far amazing and BMW really did a good job
With my E82, I also felt like I was sitting so high up after my Z4M, so totally get where you're coming from with that comment. As we spoke about, I did seriously think about the M235i / M240i as a replacement for my Z4M. I think these 2 series coupes are stunning cars and if it was not for me wanting to make my 135i into a 1M clone, I think I would have chosen a car just like this, but with a manual box. Really looking forward to which car you end up with down the line.
I agree with a few comments here, it's like any other super hot hatch these days, fast, but clinical and soulless. They all have the same pops and bangs and lack character. No point if you can travel fast without working for it like older BMWs, manual shift and all. I'd vote a basic, but interesting barge as a second car, which would make you appreciate the zed more and make it more of an occasion when you do drive it.
I’m looking forward to seeing you in a 235i and reviewing it if it’s actually much different. I’m looking to purchase one this summer but I’m not sure if the extra thousands are worth dropping on the 240i. Or should I spend those bucks on tuning a 235i instead??
B58. Enough said... Hahaha. Which did u go for in the end? The amount you'll spend trying to get higher power out of a 235i will probably be as much as a 240i with more power(downpipes and a stage 2)
This should be the perfect car for me but it leaves me so cold...can't believe you prefer it to an M2. I've driven an og M2 and i thought it was OK but definitely missing the soul of old bimmers but surely must be more fun than this..
Ive had the M240i in manual now in auto, you wont get better as a baby m car ask Joe Achilles, he put one of these up against the M2 and found there was nothing in it. As for the M235i the M240i is a little better (Flame suit on) This car will give you what you want, a daily with plenty of power on tap instantly and its definately a license looser for sure!

As a daily car yes this fits the bill as it is a bit soulless just like most new cars, they all sound the same, drive the same and don't have the character of an old school Bimmer. As a work horse or somebody who wants a fast car this car will be a great choice, you now have to fight to keep your drivers license!
I totally agree with you, that’s how I generally feel towards newer cars. But yes, this would make a great daily, and although not in the same way as my Z4 or other cars, it can still be rewarding to drive
mate, the a45 gearbox is absolute garbage, not to mention the car is heavier than most of the hot hatches, but i won't lie,it masks that weight pretty well with a stage 1,but m240i is the best car in its category.you can pick up an lci model in the 20 range, and a stage 2 is getting you at least 450break,which kills everything else in its category.I'm trying to get one before the end of august
This is a nice review. You sold me, except it's not a convertible. But I can see that that issue is not a deal breaker. I'll be interested to see if there is a vehicle that will change your mind in the future. Happy hunting!
There’s a reason bmw engineers used the n55 platform for the m2 and not the b58, the n55 is a Superior engine which makes the m235i a better vehicle than the m240i. Case closed. But I do own a m235i so I’m extremely biased. Lmao
I live in Australia and when I was looking there was a bit of difference price wise between the F30 35 and 40 series cars. 2xxx was out as I needed a 4 door sedan re kid so I was able to secure a F30 335i and the whole 335i vs 340i power debate is overrated and typically exists on paper; they are both awesomefully fast and pull like wounded bulls, and the N55 supports all the same engine mods the others do. I also wasn't keen on the silver interior and thought the M-sport outside (for the 3 series at least) was a bit ordinary (everywhere) so I got the Sportline model with black and redline trim , blacked out the front chrome inlays and put an M-Sport steering wheel in it (same as the one in this video). That and the fact a 335i in Sportline will cost you less and give you the same car :) It's a 2012 335i with 110000 kms and aside from a transmission issue (under warranty) has been reliable. BTW you're videos were a major part in my Z4 E85 3.0si delivery which is due in a couple of days so a huge thanks from Canberra:)
It's Joel I hear they are quite comfortable. I was in your shoes a couple of years ago. I got offered a company car and wanted a daily rather than just using the Z4. I ordered the new 5 series, even though it was very comfortable and a great place to sit, unless I was doin a long journey I would always end up grabbing the keys for the Z. Maybe a cayman isn’t a good alternative, but having a Z, M6 with a 2 series doesn’t seem like much of a change between your existing cars. I love BMW, my car history going backwards is: Z4 3.0i e85, 520i G30, 520d F10, 320d F30, 123d e87.... but I wouldn’t choose to have 3 different beamers on the drive at once. Nice problem to have in any case 😄
I came out of a heavily modded Carerra 2 I had for 16 years. I considered a Cayman and the M240. I bought the M240 because of its much more reasonable price and because of the B58 vs a flat 4. Took delivery 4 months ago - I still haven't stopped grinning. It's not an M2, but in sport mode the ride/handling stiffness and accuracy is more than enough. A great package, and one that BMW will probably abandon soon.
@bmxingsheep you ain’t blowing the doors off nothing with 320bhp. Bmw greatly underestimates their power and the 235i and 240i have been dyno’d stock having 320whp. Now with simple bolt ons and a stage 1 tune you’ll get 400whp easily.
They are decent cars but I don’t get y bmw is throwing the m on all there cars now when that ain’t a real m car and before anybody says I have a m4 competition convertible.me personally I’d get the m2 better shape and has a real m power under bonnet
@Rubedo Alaberti I'm not sure how the M4 is a family car. have you ever tried to get into the back seat of that coupe? when i sit in my wife's 2009 328xi I have to put the seat all the way back and it almost touches the back seat. I think you might be referencing the M5 which us huge these days? I hace 90 525i and its about the same size as a modern 3 series
Having come from a series 1 A45 ill 100% agree with this....the A45 was capable 24/7 but the M240i is something else altogether......never looked back once
Automatic?? You're going to get bored as hell very, very fast but save a shit load of money of not needing to replace the clutch ALL the time. No sunroof?? :( It's a keeper, Joel. But why in every video are you driving in the passenger seat??
@@itsjoel I was making a joke. You know, being funny since I'm from the States. Oh by the by, I was looking at the 2015 M35i at 22k in miles for 24k. And one more thing, it's a convertible!!!! :)
That’s one plus point of the M235i to be honest, that engine has proved itself reliable over a longer period. The B58 is obviously newer and not as proven.
Why ? N55 chat would have been buzzing with this sort of chat to start with and look how that turned out....plus there's been less B58 failures in the first few years than there were N55 so ?!
I think I forgot to mention that the M240i is FAST!
Yo bro have you considered a Golf GTI?
What about a 335d?

BTW you're videos were a major part in my Z4 E85 3.0si delivery which is due in a couple of days so a huge thanks from Canberra:)
i own a 220i it's not as powerfull but it's an awesome daily.
Awesome video Joel 🤪
Thanks mate!
Can you please tell me your tire specs and wheel specs ????? 19s ???
What are these wheel and suspension specs?
does this car come with ambient lighting?
What model year is this one? Thanks!
Get one with B58 and non OPF!
Would you prefer it to a Z4M?
£34000 brand new if you shop around. Good car for the money.
I really like that!
nice review
Buy it!
Boy, that steering wheel needs a very deep cleanse!
Would you say your z4 is more fun to drive then this?
Will probably sell my mustang gt for one of these
Awesome car!
Wheel specs?
m140i or 240i?
Get something a bit different if you are getting the m6 as well. How about a cayman?
Feel like a cayman would almost be more of a weekend car as opposed to a daily.
A great package, and one that BMW will probably abandon soon.
very nice car
Where is your yz4?
why would you buy a z4 your not retired
I dusted one of these off in my 1.9 pd lump yesterday they sound banging
No you haven't. Did he know you were racing?
@@dacmm this was 10 months ago, was at 330bhp in my 1.9 tdi and would blow the back doors off an m240i
@bmxingsheep you ain’t blowing the doors off nothing with 320bhp.
Give the M4 a try. a bit larger and more comfortable, and a beast for it's size
Don’t do it!
The old A45 is not a good car, if you like cars more than you like impressing girls with a car badge. The M240/35i are considerably better.
Having come from a series 1 A45 ill 100% agree with this....the A45 was capable 24/7 but the M240i is something else altogether......never looked back once
Hmmmm 235 240 or m2 ?
Automatic?? You're going to get bored as hell very, very fast but save a shit load of money of not needing to replace the clutch ALL the time. No sunroof?? :( It's a keeper, Joel. But why in every video are you driving in the passenger seat??
Nathan they put the wheel over on the passenger side in this country for some reason
@@itsjoel I was making a joke. You know, being funny since I'm from the States. Oh by the by, I was looking at the 2015 M35i at 22k in miles for 24k. And one more thing, it's a convertible!!!! :)
@@nathangregory_ he understood the joke lol as sophisticated as it was
@@TheHesK9 Thank you for your invaluable input, K9.
@@nathangregory_ No problem, Nathan. Glad to be of assistance.
Yes it is dull if you by the boring automatic version.
What happened to this guy in the space of 3yrs?
It's also faster than Z4 35is....
I was thinking that when I was driving it, wondering how it would compare to Ben’s old 35is
whats real MPG?
18-30 depends how you drive it.
@@TeacherToolkitDemo I’ve seen some get 40 on hwy
I mean, really? 0-60 in ten seconds including the chavvy, antisocial wheel spin. A35 would waste this car.
adverts poorly timed

Reliability would worry me
I had a cam cover failure at 9k miles which caused an injector failure due to coolant leak. Fixed under warentee but bmw where a bit shit.
ChipZilla69 I’ve been reading about them, reports are generally good for this car.
That’s one plus point of the M235i to be honest, that engine has proved itself reliable over a longer period. The B58 is obviously newer and not as proven.
25k miles and not so much as bulb mate....understand its a lottery though
Why ? N55 chat would have been buzzing with this sort of chat to start with and look how that turned out....plus there's been less B58 failures in the first few years than there were N55 so ?!
lots of pops and farts?
See you are smiling about this car . Not the Ford . Watch the video back .lol
