I am Jamaican, the term “black tax” we are not familiar with, but, the concept ie supporting our parents, I believe that’s what it is, is practiced but not an obligation. From what I have seen, most parents work and even assist their adult children to support their grandchildren. Jamaican parents when they have retired, I believe, are not expecting that support but for some there is an adult child that lives in the household or near that takes care of the domestic needs. Those parents are so resourceful, from my perspective.
Interesting conversation, I am learning about different cultures.

This conversation is well overdue on the continent, great insights! My questions are regarding land, 1) Isn't investing in land or houses a good option compared to treasury bonds for example because the land/house can be sold at even twice the price in a decade 2) I think the reasoning behind investing in land is that they benefit from offering it as collateral to the banks if say they are in need of a loan, please share the alternatives for this . Thank you ladies, I have enjoyed the conversation thoroughly.

Why is it an unfair advantage? Isn't financial literacy aimed at creating wealth which will be passed down to our children?

Imagine two children. One child’s parents regularly discuss money management at home and even put tools and financial strategies in place for themselves and their kids.
The other child’s parents never talk about finances and struggle to manage their own money.
The first child has an unfair advantage because they are exposed to financial literacy early on and because of good planning, the parents will never be a burden.
Unfair Advantage means a Competitive Advantage for our children in this case.

Black tax will keep you block forever. I Stopped doing it two years ago, l gathered all my siblings, to assist them, for them to start carry/ buld their
own life. From dependent to independent but they refuse, get annoyed. I just Stopped sending money. It wasn't easy but l did it. Just focus on buld myself that's all. I just send little amount of money to my parents but only when it's needed, just twice in a year
