I feel like a 3rd year mechanical engineering student could have told you this would happen just by looking at it. Unbelievable that a company selling $100B worth of cars a year makes this ridiculously basic design error.
Kinda makes you wonder what else did they miss
4th year mechanical engineering student here. I swear to god, 100% serious, when I saw those things I talked to my girlfriend for a few minutes about how surprised I was that they’d actually sell with those hubcaps.
The exact shape of any given tire is always changing when the car is moving, whether it’s due to bumps in the road, more or less force being applied on one tire due to cornering or braking, heating, cooling, the list goes on. Fixing a rigid piece of plastic to the wheel while it’s in contact with the sidewall of a tire is just asking for trouble in such an obvious way.
I went to art school and thought it was a bad idea just by looking at it.
Given that other automakers regularly make similar and sometimes worse decisions. It's not too surprising. At least this particular issue is somewhat minor. Hopefully the rest of the truck is done better though. I'm really not sure how the cyber truck is going to work out.
...yep. But compared to the "finger removal" CT front trunk lid, this is nothing.
You people don’t owe Elon anything. There’s no need to downplay these flaws that can significantly impact the integrity of critical vehicle safety components. There’s a reason why tire shops don’t patch punctures in the sidewall.
Especially how fast these things can go and weighing 7000lbs
There is no way Telsa tested the Cybertruck for more than a few hundred miles. Kind of feels like the first customers get screwed by the $20,000 upcharge and get to be beta testers.
exactly
Main screen blanking and 'stainless' steel corroding ("remove tree sap, bird boo and insects immediately")
People are beta testers no matter what vehicle they purchase. Especially EVs.
You wouldn’t expect this on a $120K vehicle
Agreed.
Google "is tire sidewall damage OK" and let me know if you get a single answer of "it's no big deal".
You gotta be kidding when you said the sidewall is not a big problem.
It was funny when he said you could get 50-100,000 miles out of a set of tires on a Tesla
I dont know who gets 50k miles on anything
Right? Cause people only ever get 3 sets of tires in 15 or 20 years 😂. Wish they lasted that long, my last set of BFG's were over a grand... good tires be pricey
That was pretty funny. I have been hearing around 30-35k miles from Tesla drivers as being the norm.
exactly.... tires won't last that long anyways. But, still a bad design.
Or anything, for that matter. 30,000-mile tire life is a good long tire life.
I think the sidewall is kinda important part of a wheel.. I mean, it's the one that support your vehicle 😂
OMG! You'd think the man that "knows more about manufacturing than anyone on earth" would have had the engineering forethought to manufacture it correctly the first time.
No one is above mistakes meanwhile this is a whole different automobile design built from scratch I expected a more serious production flaw than just a wheel cover.
How did this not get noticed by either Tesla or the tire manufacturer. Engineering and product testing failure. Another product that needs a few years to iron out the issues. My late-2015 Model S suffered from 2 major production issues: front half shaft design and door insulation that did not stick. Tesla owners need a lot of patience to be on bleeding edge.
They probably said something, but we're vetoed by musk. He does know more than anyone else about manufacturing
It probably was noticed from the start, but Tesla is filled with yes men. I doesn't surprise me, not even a little, that nothing was done about it. What surprises me is that the tire manufacturer went along with it.
Bleeding edge of what? A tire cover that goes beyond the rim? Hub caps have been a part of cars since the beginning. They did not exceed the rim for a reason.
This shows you how much testing/thought/research Tesla gave into manufacturing this product 🤦♂️ I have res awaiting but idk
Totally get it, you won't regret it one bit 🙃
I cant imagine why anyone would want to support Elon with a purchase and specifically what use case one might have that the CT is a better solution than any other truck option. And it you don't want a proper truck then get one of the cars. Those actually make some sense.
Just cancel it. The steel is corroding too. But this is a safety issue. Is it worth putting your life and others at risk?
Aero covers for a vehicle literally shaped like a brick 🤣
It has the same side profile as a giant prius...
the shape is actually a lot more aerodynamic than other trucks
@w0ttheh3ll Mmhmm sure it is. Because we're in upside down land where sharp angles are more aerodynamic than curves. Lol
@@ZeroHero-33 Ignore the edges for a second and look at the overall shape as viewed from the side. Look at the profile of the Cybertruck, then look at the profile of a Prius. kinda similar, no? Then look at the profile of an F150. Shaped like a small brick stacked on top of a larger one. Also remember that the Cybertruck covers its bed, that helps a ton.
@w0ttheh3ll I don't need to look at anything because I understand how aerodynamics work. Sharp angles create vortacies which absolutely ruin any type of flat panel you have. If you looked at that vehicle in a wind tunnel, you'd see swirls near every sharp andle on that truck... those are bad.. you want smooth air blowing over the vehicle, not high pressure zones everywhere. If sharp angles were more aerodynamic, then every vehicle for the last 80 years (including F1) would have them everywhere, but they don't... There's your sign lol
There’s no way that the designers and engineers would have missed this. They were probably too nervous to tell Elon no to wheel/tire idea.
Side wall is very important as it distributes the load to the wheel. A small scuff is fine and even this is probably okay but you have added a defect to the sidewall and it should be replaced
Especially on a truck that weighs 6600lbs.
He just said the sidewalls primary purpose was to protect the cords inside, though.
@@hatetheoneyoulove Ask any reputable tire shop, they do not repair side wall punctures, but a will repair punctures to the tread area, this little man in video is poorly informed.
Thank you! Disturbing this UA-camr is downplaying sidewall damage. “This sidewall takes so much stress it flexes widely as the car drives” is incongruous with “a little bit of damage is ok”.
@@jeremyhawker3879 the stress is borne by the steel cords, not the rubber
They had four years to design and test those covers. 😔
No way who could have ever predicted this
it's wild they didn''t notice on any of the test vehicles and actual owners having issues already after a month? of driving
Hey, Switch, the Cybertruck is finally ready for production!
“Not like this.”
My first thought when I saw the design
yes, we saw 'scuffs' on day one, but now after putting a couple thousand miles on it, it's confirmed an issue.
Having a specific tire made for a specific model is a very apple thing to do. No thanks.
this!
Two additional things/issues that I see:
1) In the video, the gaps between panels in the front end seem to have, a, well, gap
2) The small headlights in the lower part. They are small and low. I think they may be easily be covered by dirt or snow, and will impact visibility at night.
I could forsee this problem from the prototype stage. Crazy
These Aero covers are probably not compatible with aftermarked tires anyway, so they need to be removed at some time anyway.
Pathetic work from Tesla. A true embarrassment for the company that such basic issues can be missed. The way they protrude from the wheel also makes them vulnerable to damage and being torn off.
Plus the guillotine front trunk lid is looking like a real safety recall.
Great research and clarity of the issue. I’ll bet this also explains what some are describing as a buzzing or vibration sound at highway speeds.
Finally a real selft Recall from Tesla
I think a bigger deal is that these covers don't lock onto the wheel... These are going to be stolen by the thousands if they don't put some kind of locking mechanism in the center
Well, people do steal things...but hub caps survived for decades without mass stealing...we will see!
@@TSportline no one wants the $5 hub caps on a Chevy Sonic.. even though yes, those do get stolen a lot anyway. But fancy one of a kind wheels covers on a $100k iconic breakthrough in vehicle design pickup truck?
I can already say, I told you so. I would bet you a cybertruck that I could take one of your cybertrucks and park it in certain local neighborhoods in Miami and those will be gone in less than 2 hours if left alone in the evening.
I don’t know of anyone with a Tesla who complained about their wheel covers being ripped off, not on a 3, a Y or a new S. I have seen the actual rims being removed from the car and the vehicle left on cinderblocks.
Wheels have locking lugs for a reason, as should expensive wheel covers.
And I've heard of Tesla wheels and wheel covers stolen...
Where do you people live that you have never heard of theft of unsecured items? 🤣
@@zakirsiddiqui1 you've never owned a nice car, have you? No Ferraris, Lamborghinis, McLarens, high end porches, high end Mercedes?
Another Tesla FAIL. I guess they couldn’t figure this out driving CT for thousands of miles before they sold one.
Did he say 100,000 miles while talking about the tire??
People nowadays easy get brainwashed by those unnecessary extra feature or uniqueness but neglect to see how those manufacturer take good care of the basic stuff first. Back to basic first before anyone want to show off they are catching up with the so-call "trend", otherwise, you are just purchased a laughing stock.
You need that "frunk" to cut carrot when you going camping, the non-standard small dashboard indicator light to test your eye sight and you need this truck to hit King Kong when you see one, the sharp edge will definitely helps.
The tire you used for demonstration does not look like the ones on the truck with the cutouts for the wheel cover. The truck will take special tires that will be extremely expensive. Also you stated tires lasting 100,000 miles and to the best of my knowledge there aren't any tires that will last that long. From my understanding tires on EV's don't last as long as regular automobiles.
It’s crazy it’s not like we’ve known how automotive tires have worked for 100 years lmaoooo
Great video! Would be great if some popular Twitter can let cyber owners to remove the covers until the get new ones to avoid tire damage
Don't forget to grease your sidewalls every 3,000 miles folks!
Tesla Stan spewing misinformation. Plug your ears at 4:48. On a normal tire, one not designed for sidewall driving like these space-aged Cyber tires, any sidewall damage that's not superficial can become a catastrophic flat. Got my Tire and Wheel cert through US Naval Aviation training. I might know a little something about them. 😜
I’m here from the Jalopnik article. I have a question: Does anything at all in the car tell you to remove the covers if you’re going to air down the tires for off-roading? I know you need to remove them to air down anyway, but I could imagine someone trying to put them back on to prevent damage to the rim.
I saw in another video the manual saying something like that and removing fairings as well.
Five. Years. From concept to customer delivery. And they mess up the HUBCAPS!?!
Reports say Tesla HQ is working hard on a plan to... reject warranty claims on these tires (claim user error or normal wear&tear or something), rather than working on a solution on how not to get the issue in the first place.
Tesla has already been cited stating they will offer replacement aero covers of a new design. Your comment eludes otherwise, please cite a source, otherwise your comment is simply rumor.
@@TSportline I was just being sarcastic
@@pipopipilf you have to explain it you cant!
So sad, may Elon and Tesla thoroughly test their products (Tesla shareholder here) but this issue isn't unsolvable, no worries.
God bless.
Not a bug, it's a feature
Off road users will chuck them away before driving anywhere. If not, the trails will eat em anyway.
you said off road users lmao
It seems like the grooves wouldn't continue to get bigger and that 90 to 95% of the wear on the sidewall would happen in the first couple thousand miles and as the groove got a little bit larger, the distance to the rubber extension would get farther. But nevertheless, those rubber extensions need to be cut in half with a much larger clearance
This is why I rarely but a first release of a vehicle. Always a unforeseen issue not found in development and testing.
Why can’t tire shops patch or plug side walls? I would think that the side wall has quite a bit of outward force as the tire rotates.
It is against the law to patch a sidewall of a tire for good reasons. Very dangerous.
@@velocityacoustics yup. And so is this guys opinion on thinning sidewalls.
I'd want to paint the underlying alloy wheels bright silver for a nice contrast with the tire and the transparent color wrap that stainless body's crying out for.
Stop apologizing for tesla. 125 thousands is almost half of the tire and once you make it to the cords that are half way the tire blows out. The sidewalk is the most critical part and it does hold the air. Your probably only 5 thousands from the cords.
We did confirm directly with tire manufacture, unrelated to Tesla, the sidewall rubber does not hold air at all. The 'inner liner' rubber, which is inside the cords, is 100% responsible for holding air. Tread and sidewall rubber do "not hold air".
"Inner Liner - The innermost layer of a tire, starting on the inside, is the inner liner. It is a thin air-tight layer of synthetic rubber designed to keep the air inside the tire. A good inner liner will help maintain your tire pressure which will help you get better fuel economy and lengthen the life of your tires"
So faulty is now “limited edition” 🤦🏻♂️ lol
Tesla mentality
Tesla needs to replace tires.
Light scuffing won’t require replacement. It’s not different than “curbing” a tire and scuffing the sidewall 👍🏻
@TSportline it's hard to tell how deep it is. It appears to be about 1/8th inch. Sidewalls are a safety issue. Everyone has seen what happens when a sidewall blows out.
20 years ago, when my wife curbed a tire, a bubble formed, and the tire had to be replaced. While this is a much larger diameter tire, I'd be upset and ask Tesla for a replacement. After all, it's a new vehicle, and as I said, it's a possible safety concern and most importantly, it's a manufacturer defect.
@@TSportline those are 7 huge gouges, not scuffs. And after only a few thousand miles. Lots of people are going to have major tire damage.
The tires last more than 30k miles?
Not a big fan of cybertruck but how much will you miss for just removing the cover, or it really persuaded you for the purchase just because of the cover design. Btw they should see it’s coming
If you do miss the cover, just cut the overlapping rubber off and keep the covers on.
If you cut them straight you'll still have the effect.
It could be that it only happens during turns when they are at max deflection and not while driving straight. I'm not saying that's okay.
Oooo ok so it’ll only be an issue after 50,000 or 100,000 miles. Phew for a second there I thought it would affect the current set of tires. So no issue then.
Sorry, but if you blow out the side wall you will lose air, full stop. It’s not like this truck uses run flats that can run without air..stop Tesla sugar coating.
This will be like the condensation in the tail light issue. Tesla knew about it but still keep putting out cars with defective taillights. I’m sure this won’t be last major defect.
And they ordered a special design from Goodyear to make it look like that. I guess they almost didn't test these Aero Cover outside the wind tunnel.
You have a point, but you will never see 50,000 or 100,000 miles on any tire on that truck,
yes, 20kish would be a great run. However, the aftermarket replacement Goodyears will last longer.
@@TSportlinethen why'd you say it...
@@TSportline no, they wont.
When you make reverse affirmative action a major part of hiring engineers, lol.
Maybe Cletus and Billybob got passed over by Toyota/GM/Ford for a reason.
These are things you find out through testing, not having the customer be a beta tester.
No one mentions the horrible design of the caps extending way past the tire. It won't survive it's first curb scrape. Trucks scuff tires much more than a car. Tesla loves to make wheels that scrape curbs!
So the HUB CAPS rub on the tires eh? Doesn't the cyber truck and most other heavy electric vehicles burn through tires like no tomorrow anyway? I would love to see a cyber truck with 50k miles on the tires. That would be magic 😁
Surprise they didn’t notice that before with all the testing
They may not have had the covers until very late in the game, most all the early testing photos we saw had no covers installed...
"all the testing"
@@TSportline The concept version had almost those exact wheels. It was not late in the game at all.
Just to let you know these hubcaps are selling on eBay for $2300 there should be some kind of locking mechanism cuz that’s a risk!
My boss has cybertruck on order...won't be able to get delivery for a year.. sometime in 2025' ..rims underneath hubcap look way better
I bet these won't last for much more than 10K miles. Especially with how fast the truck is. If people are doing sub 3 second 0-60 often then they will be lucky to get 10K miles
OR they could buy your TCT with the covers which looks better 😊. That's what I'm planning to do.
I love the CT7 but they don't have covers 😢
That's a great idea!
lol
Btw, 50k miles, 100k miles, do truck tires last that long?
My Model 3 tires lasted 9k miles 😂
I was just gonna say the same thing!
Mid-size and 1/2 ton truck tires generally last 50k or more.
I can fix that with PTFE. No need to re-design.
A new cover ahead. I stopped watching when he says 120 thousands for the wearing depth. Millimeters please.
Extra Tire and Road Wear Particles (TRWP) are part of CLEAN & GREEN environmentally SUSTAINABLE future... right? 🤔😎
Those covers look sick tho.
Use the head of the calipers to measure depth more accurately than using the probe. The tops of the jaws are even at zero and will separate to measure an even step. I’m taking about the opposite end from the probe.
But can't the master flim flam man just do a software update? Tesla needs looking into, using public roads and customers as test sites
Underlying question is, why are all teslas wheels so dorky looking?
Imagine after 50k or 100k miles, lol. You'd NEVER get that many miles on an EV tire, let alone this beast......
Tesla recall solution: Overinflate the tires, watch stock price rise as cultists praise Elon for his revolutionary solution.
1st year Tesla vehicle = Still in beta testing
As a home retrofit, I bet you could just take a knife or pair or sheers and trim back the ends of each flange so that it no longer touch the side of the tire.
Agreed, these can be trimmed back and clearance can be added
Absolutely what you'd expect to have to do on a vehicle costing 100K lol
They're going to be collector's items once Tesla stops shipping them, better to just remove and store them.
@@treennumbers yes the tesla zombies will buy them up
Shears
Sounds like Tesla's buying you new tires ASAP. Sheesh.
Not great, but you’re probably only going to get 10-15k miles out of those tires anyway.
yes, 20k would be a really good run. Depending on inflation and turning frequency and vehicle loading, wear is going to vary.
"The sidewall of the tire is not the most critical part of the tire" Please stop giving DANGEROUS incorrect information to people. The sidewall of the tire is in fact THE MOST critical part of the tire. This is why it is illegal for anyone to repair the sidewall of the tire. I used to work in tire shops BTW.
We got our facts directly from an OEM tire manufacturer. We stand behind the facts shared.
@TSportline no tire manufacturer is going to say that damage on the sidewall of a tire is safe. Period.
another problem that common sense should have prevented. giving it a fancy name like aero cover does not fix the problem.
It is going to touch less the more it wears and wears less. All you would have to do is just shave off some of the aero cover. And Tesla will be replacing tires and covers for free for customers.
Lol this guy doesn't know how a tire works, the sidewall absolutely holds the air of a tire
You might think so, and so did we - until we connected with tire engineers and researched it. Go ahead and research it, you'll learn about how the inner liner holds the air...we're not making up the facts here :) Thanks for watching!
@@TSportline so I can punch a hole in the sidewall of my tire and no issues will happen because it doesn't hold any air. Got it
Lmao, "after 50k miles or 100k miles" be happy if the tire last 30k miles.
Btw, it won't keep wearing down, it will get to the point (likely as it is now) when the pressure stops and so does the wear.
They should change the company name to TESTA... Just get them out man.....Too much pressure to roll out an untested design... They'll eventually fix it.
Can't you just flex off the part that rubbers? Easy solution 🎉
No one keeps the same tires for 100k miles...what the fuck bro. They gave this guy a cybertruck

RECALL !
Tesla started off very well, revolutionizing the electric car market. But Tesla has been making mistake after mistake for a long time. There is an obsession with being innovative and different, and little concern about the quality of new ideas.
Who tha f... is driving 100k Miles with one set of tires? It's even nearly impossible I think to drive a 100k Kilometers 😮
Thats crazy, if I saw that much wear on the sidewall of my tire, I'd be looking into a new set of tires. Yet another reason that Teslas are ruining the automotive landscape
Bro about to be cancelled by the internet for saying the sidewall isn't critical for holding air.
I say, just remove those little edges and keep the wheel cover circular. Less wind noise also
Not a show stopper...
The massive gap between the front/side panel, LOL. They charge people money for this?
Don't worry guys you can just download the tire software ..😅😅 and fyi if you think Tesla is gonna replace these tires "free"your on Elons ketamine ..🤤
Will 18" wheels fit? Are you going to sell 18" wheels for people that actually want to go off road?
Hi Brian, Great information, Question about the watch you wearing, what kind is it? Thank you
Nice, love fellow watch peeps! That is the Garmin Marq Aviator Gen II in Titanium 😍
Simple solution. Have a more of a floating cap. All the new renderings are disgustingly. I will 100% cancel my order if there is no good solution
Certainly not the worst problem in the world but a disappointing oversight for sure...
How little testing did Tesla do before selling them that customers had to find the problems? Incompetent, as usual
