  • In this video I discuss how I choose the next tire I mounted on my KTM 390 Adventure with the plan to hit several sections of the California Backcountry Discovery Route (CABDR). I looked at Bridgestone, Dunlop, Continental, Motoz, Mitas, Metzler and others before making a final decision that was both based on price, experience and performance. I also go through the installation of the tires for anyone interested in doing it themselves showing if I can do it, anyone can.

    NOTHING smells like a new set of tires!
    Good to see an “every-day dude” change tires on these nice, black rims and not mess them up. God job! Encourages me to do the same. I’ve changed plenty of tires on spoked dirt bikes but alloy rims intimidate me.
    Anxious to hear how many miles you get out of these on your 390.

      If you are used to changing tires on spoked wheels the cast wheels wont be any different. Use plenty of lube and it will be fine.

    Great Video! Appreciate. My & 2 buddies bought 390 Adventures last fall & love them. We're doint part of the Colorado, UTAH part of the TAT in a few weeks. Rumor has it we'll need more knobby aggressive tires than the current stock one. (which I've been impressed with so far)

      I really like the TKC70s, but will want full knobbies where you are riding. Make sure the Colorado passes on the route are open. Some of those dont open until July. Enjoy the ride, it is amazing in both states.

    Great stuff! Nice that you are also using the foam pad on the floor to protect the disc, I've seen a few that don't and it always makes me cringe! I use an old tire for the same purpose. I've just put on some Motoz Tractionator Rallz on my DR650, very chunky tires and a little wandery until they wear in a bit, but fantastic traction offroad and pretty good onroad. They are supposed to last well too. Tires are always a gamble and it's hard to find tires that do everything well, you just need to keep their limitations in mind when you ride and pick the ones that suit where you ride the most. Enjoying your videos, very interesting and informative, thanks for putting in the effort and sharing them with us!

    Hey Matt! Me and my wife are riding death valley this weekend. What PSI do you recommend for the tkc70 on this bike offroad? On my 1190 usually run them at near street pressure. Just a little concerned with the cast wheel on the 390. Appreciate the help!

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  2 роки тому

      Cool, love Death Valley, I will be running around there too this weekend. Tire pressure question is hard to answer. It depends so much on how hard the tires are pushed and if the bike is loaded with gear. With no camping gear, maybe run the front around 26 to 28 psi and the rear around 32 to 34. It's a compromise between traction and wheel preservation. With camping gear keep then run them at full street pressure and ride at conservative speeds. Not sure how much this helps. I think you have a good handle on it. I will look for you guys. I am not sure where I will be right now.

    I'm thinking about getting a TKC 70 Rock rear to go with the TKC 70 front. Do you wish you had skipped the Rocks and gone with something more aggressive from the start? What would you recommend now?

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  Рік тому

      It really depends on the type of riding you are planning. If you are planning to ride offroad that is more than just hard packed forest roads then I recommend a knobbier tire. If you are doing a lot of road riding with occasional offroad riding then these tires are fine.

    Have you found any issues with mud getting clogged under the front mudguard with those tyres?
    I'm toying with the idea of getting rid of my G310GS and getting the 390 Adventure CW. I had a go on a bike like yours and it felt more spritely and manoeuvrable than my bike. However, also thinking of something like a v-Strom 650 XT for the power and reliability. Do you have any advice or thoughts for me?

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  11 місяців тому +1

      I haven't had issues with mud, but I installed the high fender kit last year. As for bike choices that is a tough one. I really like how light the 390 is over other bikes, I have rarely wanted more horsepower and I am biased toward the 390. It also depends on what type of riding you plan to do. More offroad and the 390 is better, more road and Vstrom might better.

    Hi, what is the lowest tyre pressure you can run on 390 Adv ?

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  2 роки тому

      That is a hard question to answer. It depends on how you ride, how much stuff you carry and if you have spoked wheels. I personally dont lower my tire pressure to preserve my wheels. I know I give up some traction and my is a little more harsh but I ride slow. Your tire pressure will also depend on the tire. Stiffer tires can run a lower pressure. I run between 28 to 32 psi in my front tire and 34 to 36 in my rear tire. I almost always loaded for travel.

    Hey Matt! I was absorbed by the famous AX41s and bought them in sizes 130/80 for the rear and 110/80 for the front. Out of curiosity, I measured the size of these tires and the rear tire (130/80) - before putting it on the rim, it has a measured width of 110 mm (!?), Exactly the same as the front tire, which is also measured at 110 (and size 110/80). The description on the rear tire (engraved) is 130/80. Is it normal for a rear tire to be 110mm wide before fitting? Did you have the same? Is it possible that this tire will expand by 20mm when fitted? Or is it a production defect? Thank you and best regards. (Mike from Poland)

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Mike, I am not sure how to answer your question regarding the tire measurements. What I can say is once the rear tire is mounted the width of the tire will increase because the width of the wheel will spread it out. Once the tires are mounted you will see the difference in sizes. Hope this helped some. Unmounted tires are really hard to visualize how they will look and be once mounted. Cheers form the States.
