It makes no sense that You Tube would demonetize a channel that provides timely, accurate and valuable information for the aviation community, while channels with questionable content collect advertising money.

Remember folks, we're only allowed to get our news from approved sources, not independent experts and journalists on social media.
YT, like the rest of the big tech oligarchy, has a much higher opinion of themselves than a reasonably well informed person should.
Inoffensive pap sells advertising shares and doesn't offend corporations and countries. YT's parent company is Google, so don't hold your breath waiting for the "Don't be evil" crowd to wake up to reality.
I am type rated in the Citation series. Flight Safety teaches that single pilot you should engage the autopilot to allow you to monitor the airplane better in those high load times such as right after departure in busy traffic or heavy weather.
I’m not typed on the CE....do these models have “Auto-Throttles”? And..you are absolutely right.
Single pilot, in the weather, USE the Automation. Did the “Automation” have a failure here which lead to the “chain of events.”
I can’t make an accurate judgement with no time in type. What do you think?
@@rodcoulter997 no sir it doesn’t have auto throttle. There is a possibility that the autopilot might have failed hope fully that information will be uncovered during the investigation. The other question in my mind would be the level of Aviation education of-the pilot in command. Was he unsure of how to use the functions of the autopilot? The very viable questions have been raised about the pic’s instrument currency? The CE501 is. actually a relatively easy airplane to fly and that can lead to complacency.
Well, the only person on the plane that was type rated for the Citation was Joe Lara but his license was invalid from his medical certification being expired (last updated in 2017). There was another person, Brandon Hannah, on the aircraft who had a valid license but wasn't type rated on the Citation according to FAA records. To me, it sounds like the pilot knew how to fly a plane, just not that plane.

@@roji556 To me it looks like as if the one pilot (Mr. Hannah) knew how to fly a plane, just not that plane - and that the other pilot (Mr. Lara) knew at least in the past how to fly this plane but was for years out of flying business (given that he had no valid medical certification and the last update in 2017) and was therefore unable to manage the situation. So to me there´re a couple of open questions in this case: Was Mr. Lara the PIC? Was he a single flying pilot or sat Mr. Hannah with him in the cockpit? Do we hear Mr. Lara on the radio? And why was it possible that an airplane departed the airport with no pilot with a valid license on board? Especially the last question is important if we want to learn lessons from this crash. I hope that the Preliminary Report will bring us at least a step forward to answers.

Woodring, 2nd Lt, U.S. Army Air Corps, a "Mustang" as he had come through the enlisted ranks, KIA in France on July 10, 1944. He was one of the "old men" in his squadron at 22 years of age.
RIP Lt. Woodring. I lost an uncle late in the war, too, who was a bombardier for the US Army Air Corps. His Liberator broke up as a result of the aircraft debris above it got shot down in 1945. His remains were finally located and returned to our family in 1948. RIP 2Lt. Robert Lanoice Stedman, all those who gave their lives, as well as all the MIA, lest we forget.
GOD bless him, and all the others who made that ultimate sacrifice for our Freedoms.

Juan, you always blow me away. Insightful accurate analysis without inappropriate emotion and fear selling of the masses. I think you are probably spot on in the suggestion of a pilot disorientation. That turning and climbing entering a cloud layer has disoriented all of us a time or 10. You have to really maximize your efforts on setting that adi perfect and doing whatever it takes to hold it there. Even rolling out would have helped this pilot immensely. Pitch and power in a slight climb until your head clears out. Such a huge responsibility for pilots to take people up in the air that don’t fully understand what is happening. Don’t take these responsibilities lightly. Stay proficient and know your own personal limits and abide by them. Use strategies to sequence things and keep the workload down. Never forget that your passengers are counting on your skill, not your ego.
Thanks Juan! This plane went in the drink 2-3 miles north of my house. My son and I have kayaked in the area. Very sad for the loss of life, but glad you are following and reporting on the situation!

@@martintheiss4038 I don’t know for fact, but I feel this was an exception. Smyrna’s airport is the busiest civil aviation airport in the state and home to The Great TN Airshow (50 years this coming weekend). I don’t know the victims, but wonder if wealth and power clouded otherwise better judgement.
I flew into MQY about an hour after that accident for a fuel stop in an Eclipse. It was 1,200 ft ceiling and smooth air as I did vectors for the ILS 32. Nothing too challenging. They warned me of the mower as well! On the way out I took off on 01 with the same vectors. Not very noticeable winds aloft at 3,000 ft and below. Thanks for the analysis as always.

One of the big problems in early Citations was the Artificial Horizon required a long time to spin up the gyros prior to flight in order to become effective. Several years ago, another Citation crashed shortly after takeoff going into IMC because the pilot didn't allow enough time before takeoff for the AH to "uncage." It would interesting to know how soon after engine start this aircraft went airborne.

Juan spot on as always. There was a second pilot (Brandon Hannah) on board, but not C500 type rated. The radio voice from 66BK sounds like a younger voice. Just a hunch. I’ve sent your video to one of the Nashville TV stations. Your 11 minutes has more good information than all the other coverage combined.
There are relatively recent pictures of Mr and Mrs Lara in a Hawk XP. It’s a pretty big leap to a Citation.
I have a friend who flies a CJ for a company. He said the insurance for single pilot was significantly more than the cost of a second pilot, and he’s extremely experienced.
Once again, a professional analysis and a preliminary report of what could happen on this unfortunate accident.

I dont joke around with Air Force Flight Surgeons. The USAF needs pilots 24/7 to be legal and prepared to fly. US security depends on that.

Smyrna airport, formerly Sewart Air Force Base, is here in the county I live. It’s also very close to BNA, Nashville and there’s a lot traffic in the skies. Also, Murfreesboro airport, MBT, is close as well and has a very high volume of student traffic. Our skies are always full of air traffic. This is a very sad event and I appreciate your response and excellent report. Honestly, I’m amazed that this does not happen more often due to our weather and volume of flights. Thank God it’s a rare event. Thanks again Juan.

I find it assuring that professional commercial pilots are almost always partisan to those who fly non commercial planes and will know exactly who is obeying the rules and who are not. (I am waiting to hear how Mr. KLAS ended up after busting that damn Bravo and was not polite to either the ATC or the local SWA inbounds).

When I was a low time pilot I got myself into similar situation and knew I was in trouble. Fortunately I had auto pilot to get me out. Always felt bad about having to use the auto pilot, not anymore.
Thanks Jaun for explaining these to us non airplane pilot people. I used to fly with my uncle occasionally. He had an old Cessna 172? He was a retired test pilot in the navy from shortly after WWII. He would let me run the controls once in a while so I have a little sense of what goes on.

Every pilot should go in the FAA somatogravic simulator at Oshkosh, or wherever they have it. Understand how intense the sensation can be, so a pilot can disregard it, and fly the instruments.
Until I watched Scott Perdue of Fly By Wire channel do a flight using a tennis ball hanging on a string, I just did not understand it. I was truly amazed to see that tennis ball barely move as he banked, rolled, and inverted. He used physics to illustrate as he explained the laws of motion and though I’m not a pilot, it was interesting and gave me yet another reason to admire and respect pilots, as if I needed any more.

Thank you for bringing out the point of turning on the autopilot. When I learned to fly the autopilot was poo-pooed by instructors as something a REAL pilot never used. Over the years many lives would have been saved by just turning it on. I hope training has changed by now.
autopilots are not infallible as I have had one almost roll a 727 when it was switched on. So it stlll comes back to good cockpit resource management, being ahead of the airplane, and not flying into conditions that are beyond your skill set. And you had some bad instructors if they thought autopilots are never used.
Thanks for you expertise Juan! A bit weird watching you give an initial analysis on a crash that happened pretty much in my backyard. Most recent update that I saw today is that a barge and crane have made it out to the crash site, might be seeing a recovery effort soon of a larger section of the airframe.
Growing up and living in Nashville through my 20s, Percy Priest Lake area was our stomping grounds. It’s bad enough to hear of such a tragedy, but even more so when you have any sort of connection to the area in which it happened. Condolences to all the families, as well as the church family to which they reportedly belonged.
I used to put my boat in at Stewart's Creek and Jefferson Springs all the time, know the area well.

My wife heard his plane when it was making its turn off the departure. It crossed about half a mile from my house. There have been unconfirmed reports of an explosion before he hit the water.
Great video, I got my pilot's license flying out of the Smyrna Airport years ago. A great private/public airport that used to be an AAC and AFB so it has long runways. Priest Lake is basically all that separates it from Nashville International hence the turn and climb and maintain 3000 until the hand off to BNA out of runway 32. Sadly, do not think the pilot was experienced enough in the Jet and Conditions, will be interesting to see how many flight hours he had total, not to mention in a high performance aircraft. Sad, really sad.

Will be curious to see what happened in this one (in a year or whenever). I've taken off in a Citation into night black-on-black (technically VMC, but no reference to a horizon with the deck angle after takeoff) for a return to service flight with a failed primary gyro roll input to the left seat's AI that went unnoticed for several seconds. I was monitoring on the right side and was wondering wtf the pilot was doing with the crazy roll inputs and about to take over when he finally got an external visual reference and realized what was happening. We terminated the flight without issue. You can't always trust your instruments and, in this case, it would've screwed the AP as well since it took roll data from the same faulty gyro. After the flight, we realized the connector between the gyro and the bulkhead had a bent pin for the roll data. This left the AI without any flags - it happily assumed the roll was at zero degrees and displayed only pitch. Without a second pilot and if it was actual IMC, this flight likely would've ended up cratering and, depending on the state of that connector in the wreckage, resulted in a "pilot failed to maintain control" PC.
Great breakdown. I’m a student pilot. I am from that area. My grandfather worked at that airport back when it was Sewart AFB. Been fishing many, many times where the plane went down. Was home for a visit when it happened. It’s very disconcerting. There, but for the grace of God, go I.

Great video as usual Juan. Just one little heads up though, New Smyrna (Beach) is a town in Volusia County, FL. Smyrna is a town in Rutherford County, TN. I lived about a mile south of the crash site in the 60's when the airport was Sewart Air Force Base.
O.K. I'm finally subscribed. It's tough to do though. But you are thorough, and you follow protocol in regards to what you report in contrast to when you report it... I think I said that correctly. You understand the sensitive of these events. I almost wanted to do this job once, but I liked flying more. Anyway, I'm on board now.

I flew out of MQY for Kolob single pilot with no autopilot and it is not that hard even in a SA-227 which is very demanding.

During my flying years as a Private Pilot, I got to experience both of those illusions - the illusion of climbing and the illusion of turning while in IMC at night. Focusing on the instruments, doing a normal scan, helped to break out of those illusions every time.

Apparently his medical was not current, by many years. He married a wealthy woman who bought this old Citation 501SP. You can get them for as little as $250,000, depending on engine time remaining. I have a CE500 Type and +300 hours in Citation I and V. It was my first jet. I loved flying them. It was so easy to fly. An old citation is better than an old piston twin. Yes they are slow jets but fly high and faster than piston and most turboprops. *It is possible it had instrument failure? I don't know what flight instruments it had. I wouldn't be surprised if it still had original 40 year old mechanical/electrical flight instruments.*
Does anyone fly without Foreflight and a Stratus of similar setup which would provide an alternate source of AHRS these days? Sure, it's not 100 percent accurate but definitely better than nothing.
I am not a pilot but I know that if your medical certificate is not legal (expired) its not a good idea to claim readiness to fly.
@@grayrabbit2211 I have one of those alternate AHRS. Maybe mine is defective, but it is VERY unreliable. If I have to go partial panel I won't be using it!
@@Matt-zc1qs I don't trust the altitude on mine implicitly, but for everything else it's far more reactive than the steam gauges in some of the aircraft I fly in. Better than a G1000 or even the single gauge retrofit glass gauges? No. but reasonable enough. Check how you have yours mounted as that does make a difference.
@@grayrabbit2211 I'll look into the mounting. I'll be honest, I haven't even been flying with it lately. G1000 with ADSB in/out and local flights have me not even taking it most days...
If anyone is interested in turbine engine igniters, AgentJayZ just did a video with a nice hands-on demo of one working on the bench. Very much like a multi-thousand-dollar barbecue igniter. Experienced or not, current or not, anyone can get "the spins" entering IMC, so anticipating that problems can arise when entering IMC seems like a good idea - being prepped and ready to engage the autopilot sounds like a good idea.

I don't know anything about aviation other than flying commercial across the country but I was able to understand a lot about this. HBO max released a 3 part series on the people who perished in this flight. Your explanation on the errors made and spatial orientation really made things click for me. Thanks for your content!

Thank you for your respectful insight into this very tragic event .. I read another report that was very disrespectful to the pilots, their communication, and their aircraft warranted or not. He was especially hung up with the actor pilot as Tarzan.which had absolutely nothing to do with the accident.

I am sure that when they find the wreckage that thing came apart before it impacted wing tips or tail something gave out under those stress loads.
I sold Mac tools years ago, and one of my stops was this airport. It's also used by the Reserve base there. They worked on the Blackhawks, and I would spend too much time there just looking at the different aircraft. The coolest thing I ever saw was around 6 Blackhawks taking off. They were in a row and hovered for a while then just like in the movies. they formed a line following the leader to the runway and took off heading down the runway. The hair stood up on my arms.
Years ago when I worked in a Chevy dealership, I was a slave to the tool masters: Snap-on guy on Mondays and Mac on Fridays. Nice tools.
I have been a mechanic for 30 years. I wanted to get out of it, so I started selling tools. I am no salesman. Left and went back to being a mechanic. That 20 dollars a week sounds good until it's multiple trucks.
Exactly the same way a Citation crashed in Kelowna BC a few yrs ago killing the single pilot and his passengers. Climbing turn to right, spiral decent, bought the farm.

I am a physician and pilot. Practice, practice, and practice more. Practice emergencies and practice more. Mother Nature loves complacency. I am a trauma anesthesiologist. Just like flying, hours of boredom interrupted of moments of terror. Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, PlanD, etc! Induction of anesthesia and waking up patient two most dangerous times. Just like takeoffs and landings are very critical to flight. Either profession not very forgiving if things go wrong. You be safe. ER’s/OR’s are not happy places to be. Very costly to health and the pocketbook

I was amazed to read that it happened to that pair. They own a gigantic church off of I-65 and Concord Rd in Brentwood. The church seizes all of your assets and they put you up in shared houses with other families, with the church's advertised dogma being healthy eating and weight loss. With how much money they rake in, I'm amazed they didn't have a newer airplane.
Sounds just like a religious cult. What legitimate church would ever partake in seizure of assets but then have its senior members flying around in private jets ? This sort of con artistry is one reason why people have turned against religion. It's a mind control, for-profit business in the views of some.

Very sad here in Smyrna. I have been waiting for your update, Juan. I boat on Percy Priest lake and we were out today on the lake but not in the area of the crash. My marina slip is roughly straight out of rwy 32 at KMQY, maybe 2 NM.

The reason why he expects a two year delay from the NTSB is that it takes that long to make a legitimate reccomendation to improve overall safety of aircraft and pilots.
