  • Finally get back to Denver's 1997 playoff run. Good playoff game between Denver and Kansas City. Defense really won he day for both teams for the most part. Joe Horn who would later be a Saints 4 time pro bowler in the early to mid 2000s got his only playoff reception in this game.
I meant to post this one earlier but I just ended up having to keep pushing it back to here. Hopefully the next Denver 97 playoff game will be more timely.

As a Chiefs fan since the 1970's this one is still painful to watch all these years later. I may not be remembering correctly but I thought Tony Gonzalez had two touchdown catches nullified, not just the one shown here where he was clearly out of bounds. I think the Broncos and Elway would have found a way to win anyway as they were a team of destiny and was rooting hard for them the rest of the playoffs. It was awesome to see Elway finally get his first championship a few weeks later and go out a two time Super Bowl winner the next season. Interesting note; I didn't know until yesterday that Elway almost was a Raider as then Oakland owner Al Davis had a deal with the Colts who had the first overall pick in 1983. NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle, who hated Al Davis, nixed the deal but allowed Denver to make one with only one first round pick, a backup quarterback and two other picks instead of the three first round picks offered by Oakland plus others for the chance to draft Elway. He may have preferred to play in his home state of California at that time but now Denver and Elway seem made for each other and it worked out well for everyone.

I think Gannon would've, bare minimum, given us more than 10 points. People talk about Denver's "magical" 97 run. The Chiefs absolutely were that year. Except the playoffs ughh. Still not completely over this one or the 95 choke. They should've been so much more

@@CaptainTunnel I feel ya. Gannon would've provided an extra dimension and the team had been fire when he was playing. I don't want to be like cowboys fans who assume Dallas would've won 3 more Superbowls if Jimmy Johnson stayed coaching. But Gannon certainly would've changed the dynamic. Anyway the chiefs got Pat Mahommes now. Denver, well they're still looking for Elway...

Grbac hadn't taken a snap since October and they put him in this playoff game against the toughest opponent, sub zero temperature, and the biggest game with no rhythm with the receivers. We would've won this game with Gannon. I have no doubt he could've scored more than two touchdowns. I threw my Division Champs hat away on the ground in the parking lot. I was 15. @@Kibagami07 I'll agree to disagree on KC not being a good team. 13-3 regular season is pretty phenomenal for any team to achieve in the National Football League. They just typically choked in the playoffs and many would blame coach Marty Schottenheimer for his infamously conservative approach and just being out coached.
As far as the 97 and 98 Broncos SB teams, I agree that the 97 team was hungry and driven to get themselves and Elway a SB especially after the all-time upset the previous year against the Jags at home. Yet I disagree that the 98 team didn't have the same hunger. The greatest teams/dynasties in ANY sport may actually be HARDER to beat once they've tasted ultimate victory and knows what it takes to get there. That 98 team had a chance to go undefeated and were even more dominant than the year before. They were on a mission to PROVE that they weren't a one year SB wonder like so many other past and future SB winning teams. They had an entire different reason to be just as hungry and motivated to win it all again.

I have looked for this game on tape or UA-cam for years and and years and finally. At one point, I was convinced that the NFL had done their damndest to keep anyone from seeing the game ever again because they know the refs blew the TG TD call. I envisioned league office lackeys meeting fans in multiple parking garages between KC in Denver in the middle of the night with lumps of cash for their VHS copies. I went as far as to question sports radio guys in KC as to why its so hard to find this game film. Finnally I get to watch it. I would love to get a replay official to comment on it now. Replay would have seen those Donkey asses back to the shitiest town in Colorado I say that with reluctance in my heart now though because baseball has replay now too and if it had been around in 85 then The Royals may have lost the World Series but oh well. For me... This was the most painful loss in my memory of being a Chiefs fan. I was a 16 years old. I remember I cried alone in the bathroom after the game. The sting hung around for months. It was a long winter and of course it was the last gasp of the Marty ball era. This game essentially transformed the team.

Enjoy you're 4th straight losing season!
Oh and GL in finding a QB. No "Peyton Mannings out there to buy a Championship" with. Looks like Den gonna have scout one in upcoming Drafts. Trevor Lawrence? If I was a Den fan. THATS who I would want. Best Lock gonna ever do is (7-9, 8-8) as an NFL starter. He's a future career backup. Best job in sports.
