In an interview prior to their last LP release Mass Manipulation, David mentioned having written 50 to 60 songs over time, so we should expect more releases. I rest assured....
I'm blessed to have lodged these humble & conscious guys in my little apartment in Sweden at the end of the seventies. They were just satisfied with vegetables, as they're vegetarians. I'd apologise for serving them meat. This interview highlights a lot with what we were taught at schools & other educational faculties. There were more & probably more educated fools amongst the blacks & coloured people. People who stood up against racism, oppression, segregation & human rights violations, will never be forgotten. Some names've been mentioned in the interview.
There're many, many more, like Rosa Park, Patrice Lumumba, Elijah Muhammad, Stokely Carmichael, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Rap Brown, Bob Marley, Thomas Sankara, Luis Farrakhan & many, many others, that contribute to a better & worthwhile living conditions for humanity.
There're obviously many conscious white people, who also participated in this struggle, who became enemies of the state. They were liquidated. As they did to Patrice, Malcolm, Martin Luther, JFK, Bobby Kennedy, Sankara & many,more. The education offered was somehow controlled. I'll quote Pink Floyd < Another Brick In The Wall> The great walls of Babylon 've fallen, the great Empires, even the youngest of them all, the British Empire.

Wonderful interview with David Hinds, one of several visionary musical artists that inspired a generation in the 70s, and have continued to do so ever since.
Bands like Steel Pulse, Aswad, Misty in Roots, Matumbi & dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson were the UKs most influential reggae music bands.
I grew up in Wembley, London in the 60s and 70s and I saw and witnessed many of things he speaks about.
WAS LISTENING STEEL PULSE SINCE A BOY, ONLY HAD KNOWLEDGE THEN, NOW I HAVE THE WISDOM, I SEE EVERYTHING THE SPOKE ABOUT, IS COMING THROUGH TODAY AS WE SPEAK.
Big up Steel Pulse they from my town and I remember seeing live supporting Bob Marley and they blow the whole place apart when the came on dress as the ku klux klan and fired up the song ku klux .. bad out deh 👍👍👍

As a punk in 77 I and many other punks loved Steel Pulse and identified with the hassle and oppression the Rastas and blacks were getting. I managed to see them play live at Portsmouth in 79. Johhny Rotten said he loved Steel Pulse and The Stranglers loved the Pulse too. I couldn't get hold of a Steel Pulse badge to wear so I made one myself using Airfix paints, I felt so proud wearing that badge. Still love Steel Pulse today and 'Tribute to the Martyrs' is my favourite reggae album.

In June - July Of 2019 My Dad Took Me To A Concert They Did In Bandshell Miami. Since My Dad Knows Many Reggae Artists He Took Me Backstage To Meet David Hinds. David In This Video Looks Exactly Like How He Did When I Met Him, What A Night That Was. Since Then Ive Been Getting Into Music And Trying To Learn Reggae Music On All Instruments I Know. Steel Pulse Is Quite A Band Man.
I bought their album, True Democracy back in 1980. Leggo Beast, hooked me ever since. This album steered me through Art College to now as a Graphic Designer.
I still play my Marcus Garvey vinyl album. An original JA pressing well played but still storming sounds. Bless and respect.

I'm sure there are still many of you out there not familiar with Steel Pulse. Let's recount the scene back in the mid 1970's. First off, this is a BRITISH band, not Jamaican and their audience at the outset was largely black youth born in England. They loved Bob Marley and the Wailers and embraced Rastafarianism. This new music in Britain was fueled mostly by self contained bands, not by individual singers and these bands found great success not only in England but in other countries like Germany, France and USA. Birmingham's Steel Pulse was the most successful of all these UK bands, touring extensively, sometimes with punk bands. (They are the reggae band I have seen more than any other)
They were formed in 1975 by three friends in the Handsworth area of Birmingham. Originally a trio with a couple of singles, they expanded to a septet and that is what gives their music such a unique, layered sound. When they signed to Island Records (Bob Marley's label) they were exposed to a much larger audience and their debut LP Handsworth Revolution, delivered the goods in spades. This is a CLASSIC ROOTS REGGAE ALBUM and left little doubt that a non Jamaican band could play reggae with the best of them.
Got to big up the man John Peel again. This session was recorded about 10 months BEFORE the release of Handsworth Revolution. So once again he had the foresight to champion a band way before anyone else. All four of these Peel session songs appeared on that album so these are early versions of very famous songs, and as such are fascinating to hear.
Steel Pulse were joined by Aswad, Cimarons, Misty In Roots, Black Slate, Matumbi, Capitol Letters, and Black Roots in the flowering of reggae in England. These bands proved beyond a doubt that first class reggae could be created outside Jamaica.

Being from the states I never once thought reggae from Jamaica was more real than anywhere else but I understand it analogous to rap music here as opposed to the rest of the world , if a rapper doesn't sound American there no way to make big here( for example 21 Savage), that being said roots reggae in particular, bands from around the world has kept it alive , there are many that should have been super stars
Jamaica still has a much larger imprint.

This man is a genius. He is one of my heroes. I was able to shake his hand once. I just thanked him for inspiring me and one god one aim one destiny. That shocked him. He has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard. He was much shorter than I ever imagined. Not that it matters at all.

I got like every reggae artist in my playlist.bob marley I consider him a legend but David hinds is a different kind of legend when it comes to reggae.my favorite reggae band I put steel pulse ahead of bob marley in my book.

thanx we noticed in 1978 to 1981 these folks were even travelling to the record shop at BOBS residence now a museum and they will talk and mix with rastas on location.I heard mike Jackson and his mum visited evidence that GONG had a mysterious energy .Like the record shop created a free invitation internationally to music lovers ,every day was joy and blessings
I remember playing my Uncle's Sound Musical Downbeat at Nottingham Palais 1973 / 1974 and the band on Stage was. Steel Pulse they used to dress as Skinheads,checked Brutus Shirts,Levi jeans Doc Martin's boots I came back to London and telling people about this group of Black Skinheads they thought I was mad then Klux Klan and Prodigal Son came out on 7" singles then they believed me.
The year was 1974 /1975 the band was unknown in London at the time

My earliest introduction to social conscious reggae was precisely in 1982 as a youth in the then newly independent Zimbabwe when I bought the Steele Pulse vinyl albums Caught You Dancing and Handsworth Revolution. The voice of David Hinds just mesmerized me. I was later to realize that this was indeed British Reggae alongside other defining groups of that time like Matumbi, Aswad, Misty in Roots and UB40. The last three British reggae groups even came on tour to my country at that period and whose concerts I attended with much fanfare and pride.

I expected a short docu on Steel Pulse but see an interview with David Hinds. I loved them but it is also fair to say that True Democracy was their last full good album. Earth Crisis contained already some very commercial poppy songs and there I lost my interest to the band. Same applies to Aswad. First 4 albums are really great and I still listen to them.
