So glad to see an depth interview of Burning Spear with revealing insight into the creative process from a true legendary artist of reggae music who I have listened to for nearly 50 years. Positiveness throughout the interview from Mr Rodney who survived the music business without animosity. I hope The People can get to see more shows when the time is deemed to be right. On the theme of perfect matching melody with lyrics... Come Come (1993) "Your mind and your thought should be clean Come, mek we say what we have to say Come along, come, mek we do what we got to do"
Mann!! I'm 54 now, got introduced to this brother at age of 15 ,never turned back, and when I say every day, not a day I'm not listening to Mr. Winston Rodney!!✊️RESPECT
in a couple of days I will be 55, I remember some years ago whilst playing the Marcus Garvey album, and telling my children I was listen to this at age 12, they could not stop laughing ! Modern music has poisoned their ears. One day, I'm certain they WILL come to appreciate.
In my early days as a kid, my dad and my neighbours used to play your songs every day. I only fell in love with the beat, the drums, and the voice; I didn’t understand the lyrics back then. As I grew older, I began to understand your music. Now, I am inseparable from your music because it speaks the truth and is a healing to an African soul. Much love from Zimbabwe 🇿🇼🇿🇼🇿🇼
Oh man, this interview was revealing for me as an author of books that are more inclined on Pan Africanism, inventions and innovation. I have always wondered if what I came to write about was my own doing and today, the Burning Spear, opened my eyes and confirmed that it is a calling, a gift not to hoard but spread for everyone to gain from. Yes, albums could be produced when the time is right just as books, written or birthed years ago could be produced when their message would make sense for and to a generation. Garvey's words are today like a Bible to any Pan Africanist. Africa, chained from the feet to the neck, mouth, eyes and thinking is finally putting into action Garvey's and Nkrumah's philosophy. So, Africans, everywhere, Motherkand, Carribean and uttermost Diaspora terrains, stand up and be Man in the Hills and proclaim the total and ultimate freedom - mindset!
Nuff Respect to Winston Rodney, better known by his stage name Burning Spear, One of Jamaica's greatest And most influential reggae singer-songwriter, vocalist and musician, he is a dedicated follower of Jamaica's Greatest National Hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Who's aimed was to achieve Black African unity internationally Through the celebration of African history and Culture, Marcus Garvey was the first African man in the history of the United States to lead and develop a mass movement, Big up Burning Spear for remembering Marcus in his music,
After all these years he still feels so strong about Marcus Garvey. That is what we call dedication. I like how he sprung into song without being asked. Thats a true defination of an artist. I alwys thought that you write a song first than a melody follows. Its nice to hear Spear's take on that.
@ 16 minutes in…yes, we know that the rejection of our Ancestors and Marcus Mosiah Garvey in Jamaica was prevalent in the self hating minds among us. Still that way with many of these people today. Thankfully, Black Americans fostered our Caribbean revolutionaries. Bigups to Rasta for teaching me that I was a Black-Afrikan and that we had great Kingdoms and Empires, taught the Greeks the sciences and such. I LOVE BURNING SPEAR👑🙌🏿🔥

Mr Rodney, thank you for this very insightful and meaningful interview. So many of us around the World have been fed by your music, your wisdom, talent and message! Was blessed to have opened for you last summer in Philadelphia PA. I shall never forget it! Spear burn forIver more!
The first reggae album that 'hit' for me was "Garvey's Ghost", the dub version of "Marcus Garvey". It has meant so much to me over the years - the way the keys fade in and out and the dub treatment of the horns. Amazing record. It is astounding to me that Spear got so little financially from a major label like Island (Mango). I always knew that the artists got so little from their Studio One work, but Island with its worldwide distribution? Wow. Just wow. The interview is spot on about the sound of 'Hail H.I.M." Such a great record. "African Postman" I used to listen to in my truck when I worked for USPS, delivering mail. I have had the privilege of seeing Burning Spear a number of times, the most memorable being early '90s at a small club right on the beach in Misquamicut, Rhode Island. This was the time of "Make We Tweet" and I fell in love with that record, especially the song "Elephants". Thanks for this interview. I hope Spear realizes how important his music is to us that know him and his records. The great artists mean more than they probably even realize.
The exploitation of Afrikans whether it is in the world of music or otherwise stills continues. That is why we Afrikaans throughout the world have to come together and establish our own businesses in music, banking or otherwise. If we work together prioritize we do have the financial capacity to grow and develop. We can take as an example, Mr. Marcus Mosiah Garvey 17 August 1887 Saint Ann's Bay Jamaica. Mr. Marcus Mosiah Garvey Jr, the founder and first President-General of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and Afrikan Communities League (UNIA-ACL, commonly known as UNIA), through which he declared himself Provisional President of Afrika. Ideologically, black nationalism, Activism, and Pan-Africanism, his idealism is known as Garveyism. So in memory and in honor of our spiritual and courageous ancestors who fought for our freedom without fear against oppression, whereas we Afrikans now must accept and continue with responsibility the moral duty of the struggle they waged as their legacy, so that nothing will prevent Afrikans from regaining their full sovereignty and restoring their dignity! And so Mr. Marcus Mosiah Garvey ideology continues encouraging Afrikan centered education, Afrikan history and awareness uplifting self esteem among Afrikans globally. Mr. Marcus Mosiah Garvey in his time has touched the grounds on the little island of St. Eustatius where I was born, where his legacy continues to inspire young people. The island is just 12 miles beyond the island of St. Kitts where my mother was born.
Respect Burning Spear yes I agree Marcus Garvey should be teach in all schools in Jamaica if nowhere else. Thanks for your contribution in Reggae ❤️💛💚🖤

Maximum respect for the living legend Winston ‘the burning spear’ Rodney. His concerts are always kinda hypnotic, cause there’s more music then lyrics. Hope we can still njoy him for a very very very long. Let the spear burn forever!!! Irie vibes from the Netherlands White Rasta
Father Winston song "wood dry" honestly keeps me in the mood of contentment and hardwork. "Man in the hills" and "Identity" are my favourite tracks on his albums. "Jah no dead" is my spiritual upliftment song since childhood till date.
Give thanks for conducting such a deep and thoughtful interview. Your questions were on point, and you listened and followed up so well. Plus you let Spear finish his thoughts, and really explain his process. Give thanks, and bless de I, sir.
I Feel so blessed to hear my hiro speak, especially how music comes to a person, feeling it, hearing it in my mind, that's what I always hear in me and say, truly this need to be recorded and stored, I'm sldo and artist who play melodica along my favorite reggae songs, and I know what the elder is talking about, because as an artist you play what you feel in side of you, the same thing happens to me and end up playing what I hear in my head and my heart, so music is a gift that one individual hears in side then put it out through singing or playing a music instrument, therefore just as the elder says, everything has its own time to manifest out or be done, only time will till and it's not about rushing for making money, , it's about the gift one is given to attract money at the right time because money can also be dangerous as it come at the wrong time. Thanks very much for this interview with my lovely elder Winston Rodney AKA Burning Spear ❤
. I saw him at Sunsplash in the 80s. After smoking a huge spliff, He performed, among other songs"People of the world" I thought he was singing directly to me. I was forever changed . He is a Rastafarian missionary

Thank you for this interview Mr Burning Spear we were going to see you in concert me and my friends we were from a small village lost in France and we listened to your songs but also many other Mutabaruka, LKJ, Aswad but the period 1979 Hulet, Israel vibration . And strangely my favorite piece of you is " You want me to "
After yrs of Pop, Motown, Funk, Rock, & Fusion, I got a job after college at an NPR station who's format was Jazz , Blues , & Reggae, and I became a fan.
Wise and humble.. incredible that he held no resentment towards the label that f'd him over but instead was empathetic!
I’ve always respected your music. Now I’m a great respecter of your mind. It’s a wonderful way of looking at life. Notice how he belittled no one, he knows good people have bad ways, people are fallible creatures.
Classic interview in the making! The legendary Spear, man this is a living legend wow
Big up yourself for this interview, there are levels when it comes to legends. Spear is at a higher level.
Absolute respect to Burning Spear....We will always remember and honor Mr Garvey. Thank you for always reminding us about our prophet.

Marcus Mosiah Garvey. I could never chose an African form the east for my own Jamaican black man. You mad. Marcus mosiah Garvey is the greatest son of the African diaspora. I feel the chills, Happy Birthday Mr. Garvey.
Brilliant man one ppl. One ppl one ppl. Can’t y’all get it. We are all one ppl, we survive together or we’ll all dead together. Your choice. Keep finding differences to divide the people, blk ppl, yt ppl, str8 ppl, gay ppl, church ppl, worldlions. Alll ridiculous differences we use to hurt ourselves/each other. One ppl , the great message from the man from St Ann. Some of the greatest Jamaicans born in that parish.

He is the only one left out of all the reggae greats from the 70s.
Winston Rodney is a GOAT! I've seen him numerous times over the years at large concert settings to club venues. I was never disappointed with his performances. I feel so fortunate I was able to see him. Totally love this man. African teacher is "the man"
Many Thanks for the words of Mr. Rodney. So happy to still have him around!
Maximum respect for the living legend Winston ‘the burning spear’ Rodney.
His concerts are always kinda hypnotic, cause there’s more music then lyrics.
Hope we can still njoy him for a very very very long.
Let the spear burn forever!!!
Irie vibes from the Netherlands
White Rasta
Father Winston song "wood dry" honestly keeps me in the mood of contentment and hardwork. "Man in the hills" and "Identity" are my favourite tracks on his albums.
"Jah no dead" is my spiritual upliftment song since childhood till date.
I’m so happy to see the Spear himself in a live interview. I’ve always looked forward to something like
This.
Thanks for unveiling your inspirational musical history, Burning.
Hope to see you in Liberia once more.
Give thanks for conducting such a deep and thoughtful interview. Your questions were on point, and you listened and followed up so well. Plus you let Spear finish his thoughts, and really explain his process. Give thanks, and bless de I, sir.
My father is a rastaman who put me on to marcus in the 80s, 88 to be exact as I was born 81 and let's recall some great men was my fav
Blessings Spear

I share a birth month with Garvey and my birthday is 18th and I see similarities with him, where he speaks, I write!
I atill have to watch the Montreaux Jazz Festival. Quite a while back when Rodney was warming up on his way to the stage and the Sax guys smiling at him. .That concert is still one of the best ever but the band is always tight. Perfect delivery every time.
Rodney interviews so well. How come he never looks old?
Seen for free in Prospect Park Brooklyn
And burn a spliff with him in 12 tribes Queens as a youth my experience of a lifetime
It's so sad that music companies were taking everything from these Legends.
