    Great shots! Loved it! Super power for that sized train with a 36 and that big Garratt. A very interesting original concept......designed to run on light branch lines (16T axle loading) but v powerful even in original form.... at just under 60k lbf!!! What a great job those guys have done with the restoration! …Hᴜɢʜ….ツ

    The Australian loading gauge is about 10 % smaller than the U.S one. Would love to see a "Big Boy" , "Challenger", U.P. or S.P. or N&W 611 Northern and the Garrett on one track. Can't see it happening??? Stranger things have happened. Never thought we would have a "Big Boy" restored either. Been a rail-fan for 61 of my 64 years.

      I am 66.Australian. grew up in Mortdale, southern Sydney, close to the Illawara line that went down south close to the coast, never saw a Garret on this line, never saw a Beyer Garret hauling passenger until this restored one, they were built to haul heavy freight. sadly when steam was at the end of use you could see a high speed express Locomotive in tandem with a Garret..

    • @steamfreak
      @steamfreak  2 роки тому

    The 60 class may not be the biggest, fastest, or most powerful steam loco but it is the toughest looking loco of all time.

    Some great footage, thanks. I think it's the first time I've seen the Garratt taking on water.
    0:34 Engineer in 3642: "Gee, we seem to be pulling very well today" ;-D
    Both wonderful locos. I could be mistaken, but that doesn't seem like an original AD60 whistle on 6029. If they can't get an original, perhaps use a whistle like 5917's? I think 5917's is the meanest I've heard on any Aussie loco; immediately recognisable, almost a muscular, growling roar/scream more than a whistle. Seems more like the original I've heard from footage of AD60s from back in their operating days.

    • @steamfreak
      @steamfreak  2 роки тому

      They sure are magnificent machines! Not sure about the whistle, but yes 5917s is certainly awesome!

    I have just managed to buy the N gauge version of this loco after 2 years of searching at a price I could afford. The one that I bought has the rotary coal bunker so I am now looking for the fixed bunker type which is far more rare and then the oil tender type, wish me luck.

    Nice video, SF. Thank you. Wish you would follow the locomotive as it passes by.
    Is this not a freight locomotive? Hate to see freight locmotive going fast. Must be hard on it and hard on the track.
    Broad gauge?

    • @davidrayner9832
      @davidrayner9832 5 років тому

      Yes, it is a freight loco but like all restored steam locos, it'll probably never haul freight again which means it'll never work very hard which means it'll never bark like it did in the days of yore. It has an axle load of only 16 tons so is very easy on the track, and is standard gauge.

    • @steamfreak
      @steamfreak  2 роки тому

    Must say it is differnt looking. What was the point of designing it that way?

    • @steamfreak
      @steamfreak  7 років тому +2

      +railpast articulation, a larger loco can handle sharper curves; axle load, loco weight spread over more wheels and length; power, two sets of driving wheels for more power... and other things. Google "Garratt Locomotive" for more...

      When they were first introduced, they had to modify a lot of platforms along the lines they were planning to use them on - these locomotives were a wee bit wider than anything else used earlier!!
