I haven't heard anything from BMW regarding this for my R18. I'll keep a look out. Love the new direction of your channel with videos like this in your studio Alf 👍🏼
I'm currently looking at one in a BMW dealership being advertised with reverse gear. I would have thought they'd have complied with the recall, or maybe they have and they just forget to include that information in their advert. Very strange
In OS markets (outside of Australia) BMW are offering incentives to bring your R18 to get the reverse gear disabled. I’ve read the incentives are parts and accessories UP TO $1,500-$2,000
In the UK, compensation is 4% of invoice value of the bike for existing owners. That 4% could only be used on BMW accessories. My dealer noted new buyers after the recall announnced were unlikely to receive any compensation.
On 24 Oct 2024 I went in for yearly service on my 2021 R18 (purchased it new in Oct 2020). I had no idea of the recall and neither did the service advisor. When I picked it up it came home with the reverse gear "permanently disabled" until a fix is derived. There is no date on when, how or if it will be fixed. The dealership said BMW was going to offer effected R18 owners a "$1000 towards parts and/or accessories at BMW Motorad for the inconvenience". Unfortunately they had absolutely no information on how I was to obtain this "inconvenience" credit. Since new I've never used the reverse it doesn't impact my enjoyment of this otherwise great bike but now it's value is diminished awaiting a mystery fix. What chaps me is BMW never told me, sent me a letter or anything. In fact since I bought the bike I've had no corporate customer interaction. No welcome mailers, check up emails, no "hey how's it been?", no notices, not a freaking peep. BMW Motorad is the worst post sale customer service interaction I have ever had buying a new bike or car for that matter. Don't get me wrong, I love the bike. I've been a multi BMW bike owner ever since buying a year old K100 in 1991. I've put up with the goofy way they do things, crazy parts sourcing, odd pricing, etc. It went with the territory. This was my first pre-ordered new bike purchase and corporate BMW interaction has been non-existent. The local dealer is the only saving grace. They have always been top notch!
Hmm… the reverse gear is a big selling point for this bike to my mind - and puts it on my shortlist for next ride, but until BMW get this fixed, it kinda rules it out for me. Kudos to them for trying to do the right thing, though…
Yea, honestly, I’ve had my R18 over two years and am active on the R18forum. Not a single report of any ‘fire’ or suchlike to do with the bike or the reverse function. I use my reverse a lot, it’s great. Read it, be aware, get on with it.
My BMW dealer recalled my Z4 for a screw change on the cam …. That was a month ago , can you believe they still havnt received ‘the part ‘ from Germany 😂😂😂😂 same dealer has had my bike since August ( it’s now October) awaiting paint on a fairing panel …. Needless to say to say I’m not buying a new S1000XR next year but will change manufacturer
England. Got my letter yesterday, there is nothing alarming in the letter I got that concerns me, whatsoever. Will get it looked at over winter sometime. They do have a fix, in Q4, doesn’t detail exactly what that is but it says it will take about 45min. Think this is a bit click-baity really Alf, come on m8.
Pretty sure it's an electric motor. That's what Honda does. Worst case, the water could short the coils and overheat the battery if it's not fused which is HIGHLY unlikely. Unless one removes the fuse, I don't see this being a big deal. I'm not big on gizmos, but this is one device I'd love to see HD put on their touring line up. Edit: Now that I think about it, if they use a Lithium battery, all bets are off...
Sounds as if lawyers and insurance providers up to their typical rogering... "Nice bike... be a SHAME if 'something' happened to it..." I promise to post a pic if I see a new R-18, backing-up and sporting a very realistic "flames" paint job!
Are you looking into the completly motorcycles group collapse, leaving people without money, bikes etc etc seen a few posts on this topic since yesterday
I don't get it... reverse gears are wildly unnecessary. Been riding nearly 30 years and not once have I ever thought to myself, "If only this thing could go backwards". If you can't back your heavy bagger up a few feet under your own power, then don't park facing downhill... problem solved.

Thanks so much
There was a thermal event in Salisbury just last week. The sun came out.

Could be obliged for warranty and also for selling or trading in.
I guess the owners will make an informed decision.

My mates GS1300 is running around with straps on the panniers, as there is a recall on them for the possibility of them opening at speed!
I've got an r18 b and a classic can't do without reverse gear,and lost a fortune in depreciation 😢
Thanx for the info have not heard anything over hear in Germany.
My reverse gear doesn't work half of the time anyway, so I'll abide by the recall.
I'm in the states..I own the R18 Transcontinental.. haven't heard anything yet..I will call my dealer this weekend ...we will see..Cheers😊

Is that the same thermal event that EVs have😂👍

Hardley-Davidson should strive for a mere 5000 units in one of their many recalls. We dig the R18.

I’ve heard, BMW is giving owners $1000 BMW gift card for the inconvenience.
You'd be a mug to ignore this recall. Insurance springs to mind.
