Especially the gauge cluster on the Rocket 3, the chrome exhaust and feel it gives off... Think I'll buy an R18 tbh. Coming from bonnies and royal enfields, think it's a better choice
If you're buying a R18 be sure you want to keep it long-term - it's a beautiful bike to own but depreciation is horrendous. The RRP is well over £20k but there are 2021 model year bikes available for sale at less than £8K which show little sign of holding, trade-in prices are commensurately less. Regarding the R3, unless it's brand new, suggest you investigate the issues which necessitated the recall of several model years (both R3 and R3GT) for the rear brake. I had a similar dilemma as yours and bought the R3GT mainly because of superior performance overall although the Triumph, having half of the depreciation curve of the BMW, was / is a factor.
@@RogerWoodhouse Almost bought an R3 R a few months ago, should've gone through with it. I'll most likely pick up the storm edition come march next year. Biggest question now: which colour looks the best...
@@Bradshaw812 The depreciation curve is hellish on the BMW, seeing 2023 models for sale at around 15k, and even 12.5 if you look hard enough is alarming. I own a 2020 r18 and a 2024 rocket storm gt. Love the R18 but it took me a long time to get used to it. Every day riding the r18 is a windy day. Feels like it anyway because of the wind buffeting. Found that wearing an open face helmet reduced the noise. Suspension on the rear can be harsh and reminded me of the twin cam fat boy. I get 55mpg on a long journey, I upgraded the seat for £600 and it was worth every penny. The R3 wow I took to it right away and love it. Best I’ve had was 42mpg. I have not owned either but I have ridden both and found the R18 front end to flop in during low speed turns. The R18 motor is under powered for it engine size and physical size. I generally don't need a ton of horsepower but BMW needs to give the R18 more power or cut the weight of the bike in my opinion. Riding the new Rocket 3 and I found it hands down a better motorcycle and that is probably the reason why R18s are being heavily discounted in every country they are being sold. The R18 is likely to discontinued and yes used prices are terrible if you want to sell yours. If your planning on holding on to an R18 for twenty years and hoping the lack availability will drive up the price seems to be a bad bet. Witness the BMW R1200C, Suzuki RE5, Yamaha TX750, Suzuki Katana, Yamaha GTS1000, BSA 650 Goldstar, Honda DN01, Ducati Paso, Yamaha Niken, etc. Since looks and style is subjective I could see why someone just looking at the bikes might pick the R18. I think 9 out 10 people after riding bith bikes for a day would pick the Triumph Rocket 3.
Personally I prefer the looks of the BMW by quite some margin, then again I love a flat twin! Nice house and garden you have, handy having that drive for the bike testing!
I had a bit of a cruise against a Rocket 3 - dude struggled to lean in the corners, but looked like monster torque everywhere else. We allowed each other through a couple of times and exchanged thumbs up. Personal taste I suppose, but best looking cruise bike I've seen out there.
I love both, each gave different appeals to the other. However what would be interesting is what people prefer between the rocket 2.5 or the bulkier older 2.3 model. If you had the 2.3 would it be worth upgrading and which looks the best. Personally I liked the older 2.3 as there were 2 models..
I always love warching your videoes in those beautiful places you live in. For sure these bikes compete according to me, due to the biggest cruisers from each brands in the lineup with biggest engines each. For me the R3 is a step down from a BossHoss. So why not get the V8 with better sound and loads of weight extra and automatic 2 speed 😄 For me, cruising isn’t about big HP figures, I prefer the BMW state of art R18 design and feel, compared to a 180HP bike. I’m only a bit sad about the leg position, and BMW don’t provide optional seats that i could try, to see if it helps. In the end i will leave both of them for a V2, i just love their pulse and good leg position.
I bought an R18 with option 719 Galaxy Dust paint. I would describe the R18 as a piece of dynamic art which was designed with passion and elegance. There are so many small details which show that someone cared about the detail. Not so common in our modern age, and not what you would always expect from Germany! As much as I like the fish tails, I changed the exhaust to a Rogue Motorcycles cat back. I is not Harley offensive, but sounds strong and meaty. The tech in the R18 is unexpected, but awesome.
Great video boys! I ride a Speedmaster and the Rocket III would be one of the few bikes I would replace it with in a heartbeat. I think the BMW looks great but there is something savage about the Rocket that just appeals to my inner caveman. Also, VERY cool you ran in to Austin Powers! What are the odds of that happening on a quiet country lane?
Same switch gear on Rocket as is on the 1200 scramblers. Really fiddley and the joy stick spring is prone to breaking. Left hand cluster was replaced 3 times on my 1200XE
I have a V-rod and I'm thinking of just adding Fitzgerald turbo instead of a new machine. I have a few built up sportster with hammer performance. Reliability hasn't been an issue so far
I met a Rocket owner at a gas station here in Saigon. He was so happy he might have been on powder. The rocket made by rnineT look like a scrambler. I think the R18 geometry is off.
Great vid! I think the Triumph is ludicrous, wouldn't be seen dead on it, it's the bike equivalent of a lardy arsed gormless SUV. So it's the Beemer for me. 😁
Great vid! The BMW is a clear winner for me! I can acknowledge how impressive the Rocket is but (and I say this as a Triumph owner!) the R3 is the only bike in the entire Triumph stable that I don’t like the look of. I think it’s mainly the shorter rear end. The old Rocket III Roadster was a stunning looking bike so I’d be in favour of bringing that rear fender back!
My vote is for the Rocket. Looks a lot more interesting and I quite like the exhaust styling. So glad it doesn't have an analogue dash too. TFT all the way!
The R3 has that busy modern bike look..the Beemer looks more integrated and displays more of its BMW heritage. But tha R3 has that bad boy appeal that is hard to resist.
They are really both really beautiful. I would have gone for an R18, only things I don't like about it is the jutting out boxer engine and its ground clearance. On Indian roads with speed bumps, I would scrape the middle real quick because of the ground clearance. I also don't know what the turning radius is, so there's that. The Rocket 3 is a dream motorcycle too. Absolutely beautiful in every way. I have the BMW 1250 GSA at the moment and I am looking at something more vintage looking like the R18 But the lower ground clearance and the freakin' engine jutting out, its just a bit too much.
Will the Rocket 3R burn your right ankle/leg area due to the hot exhaust heat(even with the supposedly exhaust cover)? Also, from what I understand, you can raise the front foot pegs of the rocket 3R up by .59 inches which would be good for more lean angle...
I looked at a Rocket 3 and put a deposit down on a 18 month old bike with 3,000 miles on the clock with a dealer 150 miles away from me. When I saw it I was appalled by the corrosion and had my deposit back. I went to see several others and found similar issues. You don't get that with an R18 and with the very attractive second hand prices, that's what I would buy.
This reminded me of the comparison video, where you put Davidson Breakout 117, BMW R 18, Triumph Speedmaster in a line up. You gave good marks to the Speedmaster, but at the end of the day there just isn't a comparison in size from the Speedmaster to the R18 or the Breakout. This time the R18 is made out to be the little guy! Or maybe less big, as the R18 isn't small. Like the Rocket is the next level up guy at the gym, if I recall your analogy correctly. I still don't care for the boxer engine or frankly not a fan of the look of the fishtail exhaust of the R18 (can't speak to the sound as I have not heard it in person, videos only translate so much), but I must agree on this point that the R18 is a much classier look overall, for sure. I agree on your point that the exhaust of the Rocket is lacking (in appearance) a bit, and a bike that big really should have a reverse. For me, I would still lean on preferring the Rocket out of these two bikes, but as the Rocket is in its own class, or dare I say orbit, not too many bikes you could compare it too I suppose!
I'd have a hard time in trying to choose only one from those two bikes, Harley-Davidson Low Rider S and Ducati Diavel V4. Each is excellent in its own respective ways.
I considered both but ended up going with a R18 Roctane. The Rocket was just too much motorcycle for me. The R18 lineup is stunning. The base model is the worse of the lineup in regard to ride quality and comfort. I don’t expect the R18 to go out of production anytime soon. They don’t sell a large number of them. But I suspect they sell enough to keep building them. The Rocket probably doesn’t sell like a Bonneville but Triumph keeps building them. I’ve never seen a Rocket on the road but I’ve seen a few R18’s.
Got to be one of each for my garage. The R18 is an instant classic and a thing of beauty which will almost certainly be very collectible in years to come and the R3 is an absolute must for those special days when you need to run around the city pretending to be Judge Dredd.
I really appreciate my own motorcycle - which probably doesn't come as a shock to anyone. It's a Rocket 3 Touring from about a decade back. It's a much more classic American bagger layout that gives that old school feel the BMW also has in spades. But it still performs like any Rocket. The new Rocket is just an entirely different class of bike to the old Rocket - in either of its guises. It's much sportier, much more of huge Speed Triple, and it's not something I generally go for in bikes. It's a great bike, but not really to my taste, nor do I feel it would be comfortable for what I like to do. The BMW is just ludicrously wide and just entirely impractical but I do enjoy its looks.
If I could have the power and handling of the Rocket 3 dressed in the look of the R18 would be near perfection 8) Both lovely bikes, enjoy my 3R and decided to downsize as found the power was too addictive, which could power wheelie, and light up in the dry with TC on, super stable but great handling too, used to average 42mpg on mine, the Rocket exhaust looked better in the stainless and some good slip-ons for it now, if Rocket had twin clocks I may still have kept onto it !
I'm 80 years old and still riding. I've owned at least 30 large displacement bikes, including a 480 hp Boss hoss and Harleys. My 2021 R3 GT is, by far, the best of them all! All it needed was a BT-Moto ECU upgrade to increase the HP by 35 HP which I did and it's a killer! The R18 is excellent but is a wannabe takeoff of the earlier models whereas Triumph has produced a radically changed ultra high performance machine; 95 HP be damned. I also see the fit and finish of my GT as excellent and the comparison is not even close IMHO!
I love how that BMW looks. But when it comes to monsters that Rocket is an apex predator, top of the food chain. It's THE muscle cruiser right now, no doubt.
Interesting comparison. But the backdrop chosen…wow, what an estate. May ask what camera you are using for your UA-cam’s as the focus and clarity are really top shelf? Looks like a cool day out there. Cheers Gents.
Not really into cruisers, but if I had to choose it would be the BMW R18 . I liked the original proper BSA rockets but not that over the top crock , with that grotesque naff rear end . The BMW R 18 has got more old school charm & class about it , whist the Triumph rocket is totally devoid of any .
At 6'3" the Triumph feels..... Well it feels like a Triumph. I've not had the chance to ride it but it fells like a Triumph if you sit on it. It's a lot smaller than it looks. But like you said if you buy a bike on specs we'd all have a H2 Kawasaki. And I'm a "team green" fan boy, Don't get me wrong they're both stunning but for my money I'd have the slower, more old school R18. Because character.
I've got the R18 Bagger. Would recommend anyone owning or wanting to buy this bike get crash bars front and back. My left foot slipped on some wet leaves whilst stationary and I dropped it. Without those crash bars, the damage would have been extensive! 22:00 Wife casually wiping the shit off her shoe 😂
Nomenclatures are spot on, whilst the R18 is definitely a rating the Triumph is the Chief Rocket engineers lift-off device!!! ps, where do you house the R18's batman?
Hi Both. As an R18 owner I have a question.. do you get a ticking slightly tappety noise on the left cylinder? Thanks for the great videos - keep it up Andrew
Mine does. I’ve adjusted the left side tappets a-few times and they always seem to open up a-bit. It’s left me quite baffled! Going to re-torque the left head next time just to be sure.
Currently have a Guzzi V7 cafe racer. As I’m looking to go to the next level…BMW R18 and Ducati XDiavel s are my top picks. The triumph is nice but it’s just not a good looking bike.
Great comparison, these are beyond me as I’m a bit of a shorty but you guys are ok and fit you fine. I did take a Rocket out for a test ride on a newish s/h one but it had the forward pegs which I kind of struggled with as they didn’t have a standard bike for me. It’s too big for stop start in town for me unfortunately as not practical and I wouldn’t feel confident with it as it’s massive to me. Should have listened to my mother and not swallowed chewing gum as a kid as she said it would make me a didiman and I might have been a bit taller in reality 😂 👍🍻
After agonzing --an excruciating 8 months, between the Diavel 1260S, the R18 and R3GT I finally went with the R18 --but the Classic version. While the lessor of the 3 in power, top speed and torque, for me it came down to comfort, practicality and aesthetics. I'm past needing the muscle and power of the other two --but I do want enough when I need it. I am head over heels with the beauty and presence of the R18. People are literally wide eyed and gap-jawed when they see it. I went with the titanium (more greenish w/ black) I'm styling it out now with DK Design engine and head covers in matte black w/ the old school brown logos. So it has a nice military feel. I like the naked bike look so first thing off came the bags and windshield but I like that I have the option and ease of popping them on. I also like the exhaust of the classic rather than the somewhat (to me) overbearing, focus grabbing of the fishtail.
12:26 "...almost looks like an aircraft engine." I think it would look great with the triple ejector exhaust manifolds from a Rolls Royce Merlin. Although I don't think your ears, or neighbours, or legs would thank you for it! By the way, when you're quoting torque figures in imperial values, it's lbft not ftlb (force then distance as in Newton metre).
I’m super stuck I wanna get back to riding sooner rather than later I’m 24 almost 25 so I’ll be able to do my a licence. I like in Cornwall so some of the roads can be country lanes. I’m looking for a stylish bike that great for road riding and off road aswell so like an adv but I love the classic look for a triumph and a royal Enfield like the bullet. What do I do. I’m going grey just thinking about it 😂
A used R18 or 6 rec watches... R18 or 340 Domino's pizzas. I would go for the R18 in black because it's cool as **** and if you can afford one of those watches, you'd have both bikes
I like the bmw a lot. Yesterday I was at eicma and sat on r18s for the first time. And love them my favorite is r18 roctane But the issue a i have is my foot gets stuck between left cylinder and gear lever and I wear 44eu size, not that big. It's less pounced with standard foot peg but with floorboard style footpeg it's quite annoying. I wonder you get around it. Keep up the videos big like on style of reviews
The interaction with the ‘ramblers’ made this video. Unscripted and provided an insight of people’s perceptions and thoughts about the two bikes - glad you didn’t edit this out as very natural and down to earth. 👏👏👏

Katana vs. kitchen knife. Triumph for sure, even though I'm a BMW fan. Perfect review, guys. I needed these bikes on the same stage. Thanks a lot.
I know which one I would pick 😏Great video you guys! And both are absolutely EPIC bikes 👏
@@CourtneyScarlettMoto thanks Courtney 👍🏼👍🏼
Good review with a few chuckles included 😂
Same switch gear on Rocket as is on the 1200 scramblers. Really fiddley and the joy stick spring is prone to breaking. Left hand cluster was replaced 3 times on my 1200XE
I have a V-rod and I'm thinking of just adding Fitzgerald turbo instead of a new machine. I have a few built up sportster with hammer performance. Reliability hasn't been an issue so far
Rocket 3 was probably assembled in Thailand. Currently only the Tiger 9 & 12s for Europe are made at Hinckley.
I met a Rocket owner at a gas station here in Saigon. He was so happy he might have been on powder. The rocket made by rnineT look like a scrambler. I think the R18 geometry is off.
Top job fellows, well done. 👊😎
The old Rocket III Roadster was a stunning looking bike so I’d be in favour of bringing that rear fender back!
having ridden both of these, I'll take the Rocket 3 all day long in every category. Nice video! The Rocket 3 just has that "it" factor~!
Both are amazing motorcycles, but I firmly believe the R18 will age much much much much better than Rkt3.
Great video as always guys. Where did you get your classic Black & Sliver plate from.
Great video really enjoyed it 😊 both lovely bikes I just prefer the unique look of the R18 and its awesome amount of character ❤
I love the R18 👍🏼
Will the Rocket 3R burn your right ankle/leg area due to the hot exhaust heat(even with the supposedly exhaust cover)? Also, from what I understand, you can raise the front foot pegs of the rocket 3R up by .59 inches which would be good for more lean angle...
@@markettradinggenius we have not noticed any burning from the exhaust on any of the four times we have ridden the Rocket 👍🏼
@@MrDarcy-OlMan what a relief...good to know. :)
Excellent video would rather have the bmw I really like the look of the R 18 Roctane
I have both, I have 16k on the R18 and 14k on the Rocket. I have no complaints, each has its own personality.
Personally I don't really like the R18 Pure, Classic or the bigger B and TC. But I absolutely love the R18 Roctane so much I had to buy one.
The R18 is excellent but is a wannabe takeoff of the earlier models whereas Triumph has produced a radically changed ultra high performance machine;
95 HP be damned.
Thank you. We use a Sony A7iii for filming.👍🏼
@ renders great results.👍
@ I see the Sony A7iii has very similar specs to my Nikon Zf. A7iii and Nikon Zf - Nice bit of kit. 👍
My head says rocket, my heart says R18, especially with the bobber pack.
We only ride big bikes for touring,so our road glide is the weapon of choice.
The BMW R18 is classed as a "cruiser"is a cruiser and the Triumph Rocket is classed as a "muscle bike".
Can you make a comparison between Iron 883 vs Super meteor 650 ?
I believe both have almost same tyre size and dimensions

love the rocket 3.....i started out with a trident, but ill get there one day haha
I can't make my mind up love them both so il av both of them 😊 brill vid
At 6'3" the Triumph feels..... Well it feels like a Triumph. I've not had the chance to ride it but it fells like a Triumph if you sit on it. It's a lot smaller than it looks. But like you said if you buy a bike on specs we'd all have a H2 Kawasaki. And I'm a "team green" fan boy, Don't get me wrong they're both stunning but for my money I'd have the slower, more old school R18. Because character.
I love Rocket 3 Storm, its well engineered and brutish
I like them both, but I'd probably buy the Rocket.
2 of the best looking bikes out there
Nomenclatures are spot on, whilst the R18 is definitely a rating the Triumph is the Chief Rocket engineers lift-off device!!!
ps, where do you house the R18's batman?
Hi Both. As an R18 owner I have a question.. do you get a ticking slightly tappety noise on the left cylinder?
Thanks for the great videos - keep it up
Andrew
Both cylinders make a noise equally, but a ‘normal’ noise for the type of engine it is
Good choice!!
If I was offered one and had to choose, I'd choose the R18. It's gorgeous.
As far as I know, Yes the rocket 3 is still hand built in England
12:26 "...almost looks like an aircraft engine." I think it would look great with the triple ejector exhaust manifolds from a Rolls Royce Merlin. Although I don't think your ears, or neighbours, or legs would thank you for it! By the way, when you're quoting torque figures in imperial values, it's lbft not ftlb (force then distance as in Newton metre).
I found a red triumph rocket for 6 grand in Afghanistan should I buy it?
5:43 no, I don't cry. my motorcycle has ;)
hi guys i ride a honda grom and have just passed my cat A license what do you think to the transalp 700 as a first big bike? cheers
Congratulations on passing, the Transalp is not a bike that would be on our radar, we would be looking at something more classic looking personally 👍🏼
I’m going grey just thinking about it 😂
We would recommend a Triumph T100. Put some trials tires on it and wider handlebars, and you've got a stylish scrambler
@ I love that idea. I have worked out that a scrambler would be easier. I love the look of the new 2024 triumph 400 x scrambler and the speed 400.
@@Grant25099 if you don’t mind all the power at the top of the rpms and not much at the bottom bear in mind 👍🏼
A used R18 or 6 rec watches... R18 or 340 Domino's pizzas. I would go for the R18 in black because it's cool as **** and if you can afford one of those watches, you'd have both bikes
The R18 is stunning, but I would have wanted it to have front mounted pegs
I'm not sure forward pegs to the R18 because of those huge jugs.
Yes it does not need them as the riding position is great 👍🏼
Need Classic 650 review
I like the looks of the R18. But the Rocket 3R does look nice too. 😁
I like the bmw a lot. Yesterday I was at eicma and sat on r18s for the first time. And love them my favorite is r18 roctane
But the issue a i have is my foot gets stuck between left cylinder and gear lever and I wear 44eu size, not that big.
It's less pounced with standard foot peg but with floorboard style footpeg it's quite annoying. I wonder you get around it.
Keep up the videos big like on style of reviews
@@TheTonicro Ive got size 46eu and don’t have a problem. You cant wear chunky boots, but otherwise it’s fine. 👍🏼
Maybe it was messed up since it was a show and everybody is sitting and playing with it
The interaction with the ‘ramblers’ made this video. Unscripted and provided an insight of people’s perceptions and thoughts about the two bikes - glad you didn’t edit this out as very natural and down to earth. 👏👏👏
@@ianbaines9705 Thanks 😊
Completely different bikes. The rocket is, well, a rocket. The r18 is way more of a pretty machine. Both are super cool though
A game of top trumps: topical sort of thing to say. Seriously , though, I'd prefer the BMW as the Rocket would probably be too much for me. Nick
Im probally biased, I own a 2024 Rocket 3 GT, but that exhaust lone on the beemer kills it for me.... Its hedious.
Both are a bit ott but much prefer the look of the Rocket 3 (Not that I would ever buy either ...or be in a position to buy either). I like classic looking bikes but really not keen on the looks of the BMW.
