- Hey guys! In today's video we'll be upgrading the processor in a Lenovo ThinkPad T430 laptop! The original processor, a Core i5 3320M will be replaced with a Core i7 3612QM for a huge speed boost! This process will also be similar on the T410 and T420 laptops, as well as on the 15" T- and W-series counterparts. Enjoy the video!
You replaced the keyboard with the classic thicker keyboard from the t420, didn't you? A man of culture, I see.
While the Mill Park incident was an extreme case, dog attacks are more common than most of us think. Monash University figures show that almost four Victorians are hospitalised daily as the result of a dog attack. And the numbers are rising, with a 56 per cent increase in attacks leading to amputation, broken bones and open wounds in the five years to June 2018.
Surprisingly, most attacks happen in the home. Monash University’s Victorian Injury Surveillance Unit found that almost 57 per cent of attacks happened in homes, compared to just over seven per cent on the street.
The RSPCA’s head of operations, Tegan McPherson, says dog attacks can happen for various reasons and the type or size of dog is not an accurate indicator that it could be aggressive. Aggression is often linked to training, socialising, owner behaviour, temperament and underlying health issues,
There are steps you can take to keep you and your family safe:
Never approach or pat a dog without the owner’s permission.
If approached by a strange dog, let it sniff you and don’t make eye contact.
Always supervise young children around dogs. Tegan says toddlers are the most at risk of dog bites because of the way they approach and try to play with dogs. “Throwing their arms around a dog, burying their face in them, climbing on their back - these are all things a predator might do and are seen as a threat,” she says.
Learn to recognise signs that a dog might be stressed. Growling and barking are obvious but excessive yawning and holding the tail high or between its legs or laying its ears back can also be signs the dog is stressed and might become aggressive. A dog that freezes and stares is in the most heightened state of stress.
If your dog is normally calm then starts to demonstrate fear or anxiety, consult an animal behaviourist or vet in case there is an underlying problem that can be treated. “Dogs can have pathological changes in the brain due to pain or illness which can trigger aggression,” says Tegan.
If a dog lunges at you, turn sideways and use your arms to protect your face, neck and body, and use a bag or a jumper to create a barrier.
If bitten seek medical attention, no matter how minor the bite, to prevent infection.
When your dog reaches three months of age in Victoria, it must be registered with your local council and that registration needs renewal every April. If your dog hasn’t been registered before, it will also need to be microchipped first.

Just in time, I got a clean T430 off eBay last week delivered before the weekend. Thanks Sebi
NukezzUU How is ir, bro? Worth it?
Ernesto Espinoza very happy with it for the price I paid, also pleasantly surprised it came with the 1600x900 screen :)
I did this to my T420. Now, it runs i7-2630QM. It starts with 2.6Ghz 4 cores 8 threads before throttles down to 2.3Ghz in Cinebench R15 test. The score is 368. About 10% slower than the average i7-2630QM systems. But it is as expected since T420 never designed to handle quad cores CPU. My T420 is on par with a modern dual-core i7-7600U.
It runs cool at 55-65 Celcius when idle. TDP is 45W. The fan almost completely silent in light task. i7 quad on T420 always thermal throttled at 97 Celcius and then it gradually reduced the speed before stable at 2.3Ghz. all cores at 85 Celcus.
where to buy the processor?
i also have t420 and i want to upgrade

something to keep in mind if you're watching youtube.
Thanks for the video. I got a T430 last month and I'm really happy with it. Looking forward to more T430 videos!
Did a similar thing to my t440p, went from an i5 4300m to a 4810mq and it is INSANE! Just put liquid metal on the CPU and it never goes over 90°C under the heaviest mixed loads.
Does it everleak out
@@jaymesc4436 mine didn't, but you have to be very careful with the amount you use! Less is more and it's a good idea to put some form of insulation on caps and other exposed components in the cpu's PCB
8:20 "be sure you reconnect the fan" yeah I unintentionally tested the thermal capacity of a Dell Latitude E6530 by not doing that here a couple years ago. I got a used E6530 off Ebay and in usual fashion whenever I get a new PC/Laptop I always explode it apart and clean everything as well as re-paste the CPU. Well long story short after applying new thermal paste to the CPU (Arctic Silver 5) I fully reassembled the laptop EXCEPT I forgot to plug in the fan controller for the heatsinks fan. By the way the CPU is a I7 3740QM which is even more powerful then the 3612QM in your Thinkpad. Has a higher base and turbo speed. Making matters even worse the laptop has a dedicated GPU in it as well which shares the same heatsink. The GPU being a Nvidia NVS 5200M. So after installing a new Samsung 850 Evo I'm installing windows and noticing damn this laptop sure runs quiet...very quiet...suspiciously quiet... I reach down by the vent for the heatsink and think yeah I can feel heat wicking away...but why don't I feel heat being forcefully pushed out of the computer?... "OH SHIT!!!" I think to myself as I realize WHY the system seems so amazingly quiet. I never bothered to reconnect the fan for the heatsink. Having felt the top of the keyboard and all over the top of the chassis nothing was worryingly warm so I let the install finish before opening the system back up and correcting the problem. I try to remain un-bias with computer brands but after that experience I learned a whole new level of appreciation for Dell's because while the SSD was getting hammered with the OS install, that CPU wasn't just sitting there doing nothing either and still the system never gave any thermal warnings or issues at all. Moral of the story being just when you think you've got everything completed and it's time to close it up and install the OS, stop, and go over everything once more. You might not get as lucky as I did. Also not being a dumbass would be helpful too...
I'm retiring my Acer Aspire E15 laptop for a used Thinkpad even though my Acer is a few generations newer. Especially since I don't use the Nvidia graphics much anymore on the Acer and it's giving me a few hardware problems. The T430 just feels better built and more room for expandability.
This is what I was looking for after watching your t- series thinkpad video
i put on my T430 an I7 3740 QM and run very fast and not hot
Running myT430 with a (relatively cheap - approx £50) i7 3740QM quad core, no issues, no overheating, no special hardware mods (beyond changing the CPU of course! :D ). I would recommend it :)
I know this video is about 6years old. But would like to check do you still use the T430 in 2024? Do you recommend the T430 in 2024?
I hope you will get the answer from Sebi. I use a T430 and it works well even in 2024. Today i ordered the i7-3612QM and 16gb of RAM. It only get better.
Typing this from mine right now ;)
I upgraded my laptop and it woks just fine 🙂
Is there anything else to keep in mind when doing one with the NVIDA GPU? I assume you just need reapply thermal paste there as well?
Yes.
Sebi, if I modify my T430 Thinkpad from an i5 processor to an i7 processor, do I have to change the Heat sync unit also? Aliexpress sells the Core i7- 3612QM for $75.75, is that a good price???
That price is about what those are going for at the moment. With the 3612QM you shouldn’t *have* to upgrade your heatsink, since it is still a 35W CPU.
Thanks just did the swap with your video tonight. I can't beleive I still use my T430 >.
Hi Sebi, did the fan noise under load increased or decreased after installing the new HSF assembly? I noticed they're both Toshiba fans, but the dGPU you installed had much larger intake openings.
Across the board I did not notice a significant increase in fan noise.
I just upgraded my T430 with a i7-3632QM which is a 2.2GHz processor with up to 3.2GHz turbo.
Weirdly I can run prime95 on the upgraded T430 and according to Core Temp 1.12.1 the 3632QM stays at 2.9GHz with 35W dissipation. I'm used to seeing prime95 bring more modern desktop processors down to their base frequency.
It does get up well towards 100 degrees Celsius though! (I'm using the original fan, I don't want to spend too much on this old thing).
I upgraded my T430 w/ 2 core i7 to a i7-3632QM 4 core, 8 logic processors, and found my Thinkpad runs noticeably cooler than before, using the stock original fan/heatsink. Works for me.
When you play 4k/60fps videos on YT, how cpu usage do you get with the 3612qm? I am about to do the same but with a 3632qm... The 4k Software decoding on YT is a real-life benchmark I usually use...
I usually don’t go above 1080p, because, well, the T430’s highest resolution screen isn’t even 1080p so there’s no reason to waste system resources decoding a video it can’t even display at full size.
Overall, do you prefer the T430 over the X230? Also, I saw your MacBook Pro in the background. In other videos I think I saw an older iMac. When are we going to get a video from you talking about some of these Macs you collected?
X230 is definitely a sleeker and more portable machine, but the T430 has more upgrades available and is just more versatile (typing from mine now). Which one is better for you would depend on your planned uses.
I've thought about doing a video of some sort on one of those Macs but haven't found anything interesting enough to talk about.
I can't find the i7 3612QM on Ali Express anymore. Are there any other safe i7 alternatives?
i7-3632QM.
What Operating system do you use for the T430.
Very clear and understandable instructions.
I have a T410. I'm thinking about putting 16 gigs of Crucial RAM in it. Do you think that will help battery life? I want to improve performance and battery life. Changing RAM is much more within my comfort level as my only experience is with upgrading from and HDD to an SSD in the same machine. I believe I can get low-voltage RAM.
Any information on that topic would be greatly appreciated.
The T410 will not accept more than 8 GB of RAM. The T420 and later will take 16. Processing power has more of an effect on battery life than RAM, that’s why Ultrabook laptops can last for 10-20 hours while a full power mobile workstation can only be used for a few hours under heavy load. If you don’t have the 9-cell battery (the pack sticks out the back), I highly recommend it because it increases the battery life and doubles as a handy grip when you’re using the laptop.
Thanks for the reply. And thanks for the reminder about the 8 GB maximum. I did run the Crucial system analyzer on it but I had forgot that fact.
Knowing almost nothing about computer systems, I had just assumed that decreasing paging would improve speed and battery life. I have noticed that Intel advertises a lot about more power-efficient CPUs but I didn't realize how important that was to battery life versus the amount of RAM the system is running.
Oh, and by the way, I just bought a T440 P. Yes, I love that thing. They're built like a tank and as you've shown, the internals are very accessible for upgrading. I'll be looking for much more content from you, and searching your archives, for everything about changing the back cover, palm rest, screens, SSD…, Etc., Etc. Keep that excellent content coming!
How is your temperatures now when idling , video editing...now?
Thanks
Haven’t taken a close look but the laptop has never gotten uncomfortably hot even around the processor and cooling system, so I’d say it’s well within reason.
That was neat and the job didn't take too long and you have the computer running just fine so you are a happy camper and you have a faster computer too. I tried installing another OS on the T400 Thinkpad which currently have Windows 10 on it currently. I thought there was a problem with the computer, but now think it is the Windows 10 software which don't want to run on that computer.
Would you still recommend the igpu fans with the 3632qm (35w) or is the standard fan fine.
The standard fan would be fine, but you can get the dedicated GPU cooling assembly to keep things a little cooler.
Hey why did you go with the 3612QM? Is there something you know about insofar as the hierarchy of processing and/or choice of data strands that it receives for reality transceiver reception? Because there seems to be quite a few choices of CPU available... I was wondering if you knew about any choice standings which bridge IVY and SANDYBRIDGE? I believe there was one processor I'd read about which was able to do that. Hmm...
the X30 series takes sandy bridge and ivy bridge cpus, sandy is a year older and runs hotter, but isn't horrible. The 3612 & 3620 are suggested for the T430 because they have a lower tdp than the other 4 core options for that socket. All sandy bridge 4 core cpus are of the higher tdp and will not play nice with the stock cooling in the T430, but the 15 inch W530 and T530 will have appropriate cooling, but at that point they probably already came with an ivy bridge that out performs whatever sandy bridge cpu you may throw in there.
Hello, was battery life affected significantly after the upgrade? Thank you for the video :)
Not really. Get an average of 3-5 hours with a 9-cell battery.
thank you my best teacher in all time but i have question .what will happen if i do not buy a new cooler for the processor or and i decided to use the old one?
Hey sebi! I hope all is well! I was wondering if you were considering removing and replacing the current T430 bios using 1vyrain in order to allow 802.11ac wifi cards. A video on this would be awesome if you have considered it!
Thanks
It's on my to-do list, unfortunately everything that's been going on lately has put me a little bit behind schedule.
Ivyrain?
thank you, will follow your video to upgrade my t430. can you give some recommendations about which egpu to look for?
Is it still wirth the i7-3612qm in 2020? i'm considering buying a moded x220 with such a CPU. Considering i want to run occasionally Dolphin Emulator and just run Arch Linux on it. Also I have 16GB RAM and a SSD.
A modded X220? Go on...
@@SebisRandomTech Thanks for the replay. They replace the stock CPU with the i7-3612qm. Additionally i'll get also a FHD 13' Screen.
Hello Sebi. May I ask for details regarding the aftermarket battery for your T430? I’m interested in getting the best replacement possible.
Honestly at this point it is a crapshoot. You can probably still find used/refurbished/new old stock genuine Lenovo batteries around; these will probably be the best option. If not I *would* try to recommend a certain aftermarket manufacturer over another but the vendors and brands of those batteries seem to change all of the time.
Love your videos, I just got a T430 myself that came with an i5-3320M. I'm planning on upgrading to the same CPU. Do I need to replace the heatsink? Mine is a Toshiba one and I also have a dGPU but I've disabled it due to the laptop getting really hot and the battery draining quickly with it enabled even when I just replaced the thermal paste.
The stock heatsink should be fine as long as you aren't putting a super hot processor in.
Can i run call of dutty warzone exactly with this laptop and this i7 3612qm??
It might be able to run, but it might not be playable. If you use an external graphics card with this then it could be doable.
Hey Sebi, did you have to use a "better" heatsink and fan to keep the CPU at good temperature levels? Furthermore, from what I have read online, it is possible for 90W chargers and below to be insufficient to charge a t430 running a quad core CPU. Is this the case? Please let me know, as I am going to be building my T430 soon.
Thanks!
90W worked fine with mine. I didn't have to use a better heatsink.

Thx for great vid! Question please: I have a T530 with a dedicated Nvidia Gpu and the stock i5-3230. I’ve been reading different opinions on upgrading to a i7-3840 and overheating. If you think it’s too risky I’ll go for a 3632, but I’d rather have the faster 3840, any thoughts?
Overheating shouldn’t be a problem if you use good thermal paste. Will it run hotter than the stock i5? Probably, but will it overheat or thermal throttle, probably not.
cg sather I have a 3740qm 45w chip in my t530 with integrated video heatsink. Seems ok but haven't run benchmarks. I've gamed w it on expresscard egpu and pushed the CPU sometimes but never felt heat.
Meissnerflux I installed a i7-3740qm like yours, I also have a dGPU NVS5400. I’m using my laptop for 3d modeling and rendering, now the cpu temps in the nineties when rendering with cpu at 100%, speed stays at 3.5hz. A couple times it went over 102C, with thermal throttling results. I think I did the thermal paste right, used Arctic 4. I have Intel XTU installed, doesn’t seem to do much. Any suggestions on lowering temps without losing performance? Install fan mgmt software? XTU won’t let me undervolt.
Also, now my dGPU is the weak link and I’d like to do the eGPU. How did you do yours? GDC EXP to express card? Any tips?
I have one T430 with I7 -3640QM, but there is always fan noise, if I downgrade to I5-3320m, whether that will make the T430 more quite and cooler?
Great video. I am considering either the T430 or the T440p. Are both laptops screen upgradable to 1080p ? I understand that the T440p (i7-4910MQ) shall be a beast. So which is a better choice. PS: I only do productivity works, internet and light gaming.
T440p takes 1080p screens out of the box, the T430 needs an upgrade kit to be able to accept 1080p screens (but I did this with mine and it was well worth it).
Hi, I've done the same upgrade, for my T430 laptop, from original CPU i5 3320M to the more performant i7 3610QM processor. I've also updated to 16 Gb ram and various other upgrades like a new SATA 2,5 1TB SSD and another M-SATA 250Gb SSD. All is gone well but I've encountered more problems with the original 65w mini power supply: when connected to AC plug, if I leave the battery in place, the unit was not active to charge it and the laptop was on only by the battery residual charge. When I shut down the laptop, the charger was again usefull to re-charge the battery. Also, when laptop was on, I've had many many other problems with the two USB 2.0 ports but not with the two USB 3.0 ports! Often my wifi logitech mice goes down and on without a reason! The only I've immagine is a low power disponibility to ports due to the major CPU request!
So I've also changed the power supply from the original Lenovo 65w to another original Lenovo 90w and I've just solved all problems!
I've noticed a higher thermal profile utilizing same application under windows 10with the new CPU, till extreme 90°C temperature!
I hope this not compromise the CPU durability. I write this comment for other people as I've found many information on youtube to upgrate.
Hi all!
The 3610QM is rated for a higher TDP than the 3612QM I used in this video. My processor and your original processor are rated for 35W, while the 3610QM is rated for 45W. As such the power issues and the higher temperature you're encountering make sense. That's why I only recommend the 3612 and 3632, as other quad-core i7's are rated for higher temperatures.
@@SebisRandomTech Hi Sebi, tank you, I want to add another important information from the 3610QM CPU Datasheet: The 3610QM has a rated temperature max of 105 Celsius instead of other processors of the same generation that is around 90 Celsius!
For that, I hope this the upgrade is good, even if you notice a great heat near the left grid on the hand!
Using the my upgraded laptop with intensive applications, HWMonitor tells cores and package temperatures less 100 Celsius, so I suppose to be in the normal range. Obviously I don't think to overclock the laptop!
Tanks
Can us upgrade cpu to newest generatiom processor?
No.
Do you prefer the T430 or the T440p? You can install a classic keyboard into the T430 but you're stuck with the "modern" keyboard on the T440p. But the T440p looks easier to upgrade than the T430.
T440p is definitely easier to upgrade and performs better on the surface. You can upgrade the display to a FHD IPS if it wasn't configured with that from the factory. T430 has the classic keyboard as an option, can use an external GPU and has the ExpressCard slot for expandability, it has the ThinkLight, hot-swappable UltraBay, and the more classic design.
new to wroking on computers, but on the fan/heat sink whats the little square piece with thermal paste on it? like whats it go over or on?
That goes over the processor.

There is an adapter kit you will have to buy for an IPS display to work. More can be found on the ThinkWiki article "Replacing T430 screen with a better one".
Have you tested if it has an effect on battery life?
Very clear instructions btw. 👍
Haven't really been able to do a thorough test of that, but it still lasts several hours doing normal tasks so the only time battery life is heavily affected is probably when it is under a full load.
Quite good I guess. But, as I discovered, there are quite a number of screws you have to remove before the top will come off that are not mentioned at all in the video.
I thought I had mentioned it, however I might have edited it out because some of my instructions were redundant. I’ll have to look back through the video and see.
With my mixed-use (web browsing, watching video, etc) I manage to get around 3-5 hours with the 9-cell battery. Your mileage may vary.
I have Lenovo ThinkPad t430 but the bios is lock is it possible to upgrade the processor
I think you can also do cpu upgrades on the E430.
Have you test for the temperature after CPU swap? I got my T430 last year and I upgraded from 3320M to i7 3740QM with 45w TDP, temperature when idle is around 45c, full speed around 70-80c.
From my experience, temperature is the same when you install heat sink with or w/o dGPU heat pipe.
I used a 3612QM, it and the 3632QM are only 35W chips so they don't get as hot.
Have you hand any issues with over heating? I'm thinking i might want to go with a 45 watt instead of a 35 watt

3632QM would probably be best because it runs cooler.
i have a 11 year old thinkpad t430i model will a i7 3610qm upgrade from i3 3110m be fast enough for egpu
Depends on what sort of eGPU you plan on using. I recommend the 3612 or 3632QM processors, since most of the other quad core options will run hotter than what the T430 was designed for. The older hardware of this system will be a bottleneck for modern GPUs.
Is there a reason to change the heat sink? I have the 3612QM ready on hand to upgrade.
Like I said in the video, the heat sink is the one meant for T430's with a dedicated GPU. Even though my model doesn't have the GPU, using the GPU heat sink can help keep temps down a little better than the stock cooler. The regular heat sink will do fine though, and as far as I know the CPU won't overheat even with that.
Thanks for your reply. I look forward to upgrading my T430. I'm going to max out the RAM and install a SSD. I'm thinking about upgrading the screen to.
Do you need a new heat sink or should the stock on work well on the upgraded quad core
Stock one worked fine for me.
Hi Sebi, I happy that YT recommended you once , because due to your reviews I bought a T430. But know I need some ideas. Recently I finished my CPU update to a Core I7 3312QM that works very well. I am suffering since cpu upgrade an issue that the carger does not seem to charge the laptop anymore while it is running. But It starts with AC only connected and it even seems to charge the battery when turned off. But When I start it with battery and AC the battery is discharging and turns off when getting below 5%.
The charger is an original lenovo FRU/PN45N0314 that gives 20V/3.25A. Might it be thatit does not deliver enough to charge and run the laptop at the same time? And is this due to the CPU change, because both CPUs have TDP 35W.
Any clue ?
Another point is my bios version is quite old : v2.52. from 02/14/2013.
You will need a higher wattage charger. 65-90 W, or 90-135W
@@SebisRandomTech I thought the same and ordered already one from Amazon with 90W. But what bothered me is that I nowhere read about that. And that makes my PSU with 60W useless now. Anyway, many thanks for the advise. I have doubts if it is really necessary to update the bios. My genuine battery supported the core i5 for more than 6h. Now I am thinking about the 9 cell battery slice that would extend the battery time again. But I am really worried to brick the bios with the hack from your other video. Can you point out which is the flash chip on the Mainboard, that I can dump with an external programmer? As far as I remember there were two.
@ChAnTi I’m not too familiar with the T430’s motherboard, or with flashing directly to the chips/dumping from them.

@@CrazyJames As far as I know they're legitimate. If they aren't and you used eBay it should be easy to have your money refunded.
Stumbled across your channel today! Greetings from the UK!
Would you ever consider doing the FHD mod on your X230? I know you've already changed it to an IPS display, but FHD would be even better! :P
I'm currently in the middle of upgrading an X230 Tablet from the i5 3320M to the i7 3520M. I'm also adding 16gb RAM, a backlit keyboard and a 500gb ssd along with a 128gb msata ssd.
Should be a nice little laptop when I get it complete!
If only there was a FHD mod for the X230T.
Ahh well, good luck with your endeavours - I shall be subscribing!
As I’ve probably said in the comments in that video, 1080p is too high of a resolution for that small of a screen to me. Yes Windows 10 has scaling but it still wouldn’t look right. For now I am more than satisfied with the current IPS upgrade. I am eying up doing the IPS mod to the X200/X201. Best of luck with your X230T upgrades and thanks for subscribing!
Thanks bro!
Hey. Whats your situation with a X230T???? Are you happy??
What about a T430 with dedicated Graphics?😅
I have a egpu hooked to my x230 through expresscard.
@Somali Navy now I have a razer blade, so I don't use that setup anymore. But I used to play Witcher 3 on High 50fps on a ultrawide monitor. Thinkpad x230 + GTX 1060 gpu. So no, not CSGO. Anything, really.
@Somali Navy It's acutally crazy that it can do that, but it can. It's crazy.
@Somali Navy yeah, but it works
I'm curious how big the bottleneck is with the single PCIe lane in expresscard.
I doubt you remember, but what heat sink did you use?
It was either the 04W3269 (Toshiba) or the 04W3270 (Delta). It was the discrete GPU heatsink (despite my system not having descrete graphics) to allow for presumably better cooling. In my current system I just have the standard integrated heatsink and it still cools just fine.
Thanks!
I attempted the upgrade. Unfortunately it powers on for a split second then shuts down. I put the old processor (an i7-3520M) and everything is fine again. Does anyone know why my upgrade failed?
I'm Planning to do this with my L430 same socket rpga G2 from i5 3210m to i7 3610m, plus I'm going to change my board with gpu nvs 5400m hopefully will work after lockdown hear in Philippines :)
How about the t530? I assume the process is almost identical but is the i7 3612QM probably the best option for the t530 as well or is there a better CPU to consider for that in terms of performance and thermals?
I actually just got my hands on the T530 and am planning on swapping the 3612QM from my T430 into this. I may hold off a bit on doing this, as the T530 and W530 share the same chassis so I may just swap in the motherboard and heatsink of a W530 for the better graphics performance and higher maximum RAM.
Hi, Can i use same i7 processor upgrade in my T430s varient.? ... Thanks for the video
No, the T430s uses soldered processors.
Would this work for a L430?
Installed a i7 3632QM on mine. The temps hit 95c when stress testing on Prime95 and throttles.. So I decided to throttle the CPU ( via Power options in Control Panel) in battery by using only 90% and on Charger to 100%. Sits idle at 40c..Should I be upgrading to the Nvidia heat sink? Will it shave a few degrees off?
Thinking of getting DDR3L sticks to save battery life. Do they work on Ivybridge architecture?
DDR3L sticks should work. An Nvidia heat sink should help keep things cooler. Make sure to do a good application of thermal paste. I have a 3632QM in mine now and it almost never gets close to maximum temperatures.
Have you tried running 16gb RAM with the new Core i7 3612QM? I’ve heard issues with running this CPU with 16gb RAM. Should that be a problem?
I can't say I've seen any issues with it.
@@SebisRandomTech Thanks man! Love your channel!
I have the parts ordered to do this to my T420 but am flip-flopping between this i7-3612QM and a i7-2670QM.
Awesome! I hope it works well for you.
Thanks, I try that and let know how bad I did, or good....
will the i7 3520m? work? i have an i7 right now, but i have 3 i5 t430 i want to upgrade. I also have a t440p i5 i want to upgrade as well. Im not real good at figuring out what works with what, but im good at taking stuff apart and putting it back
It will work but won't be a massive upgrade over the i5. The T440p is a nice laptop as well.
@@SebisRandomTech yea i like it i just hate the track pad and i know you swap it out for a different one, but I really dont want to go through that work. I do like the t430 though i like that black look. it feels like you could bash someone in the head and then post online with it lol
Great video :),
I personally have an intel i7 3610qm in my t430.
Cheaper and faster option as can be seen from a few places online. Can pick up a i7 3610 for a good bit cheaper…. Well in the uk you can.
Can you also do this to Thinkpad T430s? With the same process?
No. The T430s uses soldered processors.
I have the t430 and have yet to open it up all the way...installed ram to get it to 12 and next is the processor...do you have the link for this i7 as I’m a UA-cam streamer and it’s time to max this thing out!! If you can help me please
Availability of the processor is never consistent with any given seller, so for me it’s easier for the buyer to look up the processor on eBay rather than send a link, usually by the time anyone sees the link that seller is no longer offering it for sale. But if you need to know, the processor I put in is a 3612QM.
Core i7-3740QM with 45W TDP works fine also, if you're not using Windows... Manjaro Linux manages to cool it just fine.
Great video 👌👍
what the cooling system are you use for the cpu ?
The dGPU cooling assembly.
What's the part number for the replacement heatsink?
04W3269 and 04W3270 for the dedicated GPU, 04W3267 and 04W3268 for the integrated GPU heatsink.
How is that possible, sorry im new in ThinkPads, How you can upgrade from I5 3320M (FCPGA988,FCBGA1023) using BGA1023.
To i7-3612QM (FCBGA 1224) using BGA1224, how is that possible, theyre not the same socket, im asking because i want an T430. Thanks.
They are the same socket.
Oh, thank you so much!
I HAVE UNAQUE IS 4G BUT I WANT TO PUT ONE OF 2G IS CORRECT?
Can you maybe help me?
I also changed my cpu to a i7 3612QM and install windows new and driver also updated. But battery doesn't charge. only if the laptop is off. Why?
If i put the i5 3320m battery charges.
Is it an old or aftermarket battery?
Sebi's Random Tech
No its a original lenovo battery with 3-4 hours battery life
Is Lenovo Power Manager installed?
Sebi's Random Tech
Driver or software?
Can u send the link please
Ok i installed it. But atill doesn't charge if the laptop is on.
has probado instalar 32gb en ram? ya que este procesador lo soporta mi bios es 2.82 version
El procesador si pero el motherboard en la T430 solo soporta como maximo 16GB
which bios version are you using in this video?
Hard to say, this was almost 2 years ago.
What is tdp and how can one know that how to keep the tdp lower or the recommended cpu 2 kp it low ?
The CPU spec sheet tells you what its TDP (35W, 45W, etc) is. The best ways to keep it cool are high quality thermal paste and good application of said paste, and adjusting the fan curve using something like TPfancontrol to make the fans run faster, getting more air moved.
Great Example!!!
Hi, do you know if it works on T430s, too? Thx
Nope, the T430s uses soldered processors.
.. Cheers to you ..
hey, i'm thinking about buying a E470, do you think it's a good buy? (btw, they only sell 768p panels on my country and it has a 6th gen i3, 4GB ram and 500 GB HD)
Whether it’s a good buy or not depends on the price and your needs. If it’s on a heavy discount then it might be worth it, but if it’s close to the regular price there might be better options out there.
thanks, it's just about 10% discount.
the 3632qm is the best 35w tdp option
edit: not only is the 3632qm slightly cheaper its also ever so slightly faster
So where Can I get that cpu? Thx!
eBay.
@@SebisRandomTech I know that you can get it on eBay. I wanted to know if you have any trust seller? Or maybe a link? Thx!
@@Phantom-pj1ls Sellers always change, very rarely have I found that the same seller will have the same parts available at different times. The only real exception is if the person selling the part was the person who made the part, such as the nitrocaster X220/X230 FHD mod or modified LCD cable/inverter sets for the T60.
I upgraded my T-430 (same laptop, just next model)... It's not a BIG upgrade, but you can definitely tell...
From I5 to I7
BTW the "s" model has a soldered on CPU...So if you have the "s" variant, you're out of luck...
The i5 to the i7 that Lenovo originally shipped is not a huge upgrade, as it is still a dual core CPU. The i7 I put in is a much faster quad-core, so there’s a much larger difference in performance between it and the original i5.
Btw, this is the T430 shown in this video too, so I’m not sure what you meant by “the next model”. I talk about the -s and X series ThinkPads using soldered CPUs in some of my other videos.
Where can I get this processor? It's not listed anywhere.
eBay.
That Unicomp Spacesaver tho
Actually the Unicomp Classic 104 :)
@@SebisRandomTech ah the big guy. I have the white spacesaver but don't really use it much. And of course... a T430 that I am now looking at upgrading with a 35W i7 thanks to all this info. I remember my college days (computer engineer BS/MS here) and the 430 line was new when I entered grad school. Sure was a big deal then and I drooled over it, but no one drooled more over a ThinkPad at that time than the original X1 Carbon, even if it wasn't very future proof. Just a beautiful machine. Anyway, I digress. Maybe a T480 someday for me is next...
@@metal571 I do agree that the original X1 Carbon is a very nice machine, even if it's a little lacking in upgrades. It's built well, feels nice to use, and still has that "ThinkPad" feel to it.
@@SebisRandomTech I might be a little biased. At one point for a couple of years I was part of a Lenovo internal group called the Lenovo Insiders where we were basically promoters. Unfortunately when they started getting us to push Yoga and IdeaPad stuff I totally lost interest, but it was a fun group to hang out with with a lot of Think line fans there too.
Here's to hoping they offer some more models in the future with fully socketed RAM and those Ryzen chips. Was looking at T14 with the AMD option for a wild 8C/16T powerhouse but the drawbacks vs T480 are annoying.
@@metal571 I'll be sticking to my T430 for the foreseeable future. Bringing back a socketed graphics card on the P15 and P17 is promising, but they also cheapened the design a little and got rid of dedicated touchpad buttons (trackpoint buttons are still there).
hi , i changed I5 for I7 3740 qm and it's very good and fast !!!!
Did it increases your system speed...
I'm also want to upgrade my T430 from i5 3rd generation to i7 as i have much to deal with Graphics and rendering stuff...
Did this upgrade helps me?
I5 is a core 2 duo , I7 3740 qm , 4 cores , i saw better performance in Cinebench 15 . Test your CPU whith it and compare whith I7 results . Rendering is best . I think really that this upgrade help you in your job
@@patrickcremmer8989 Where did u buy ?
@NYCfactor Hi , if you haven't an nvidia gpu ( nvs 5400M) , temps are very good 109°F in idle in a room at 68°F . If you have an nvidia , temp is 140° idle in same room ( no good ) . I know because i have 2 motherboards . 1 whith GPU and other just HD 4000
@NYCfactor never problems whith heat . Heat when i use the motherboard whith nvidia nvs 5400m .
bro this laptop still life ?
best wishes. god bless you.
Also what are your thoughts on adding an i7-3840QM (or any i7 with a TDP of 45 watts) and adding a dual pipe heatsink and a non delta fan? Would this work/improve the speed of the cores and keep the computer cool without causing throttle? Would I need to flash the BIOS and overclock?
LOVING your channel!
I don't *think* you would have to patch the BIOS. A dual pipe heatsink should help with preventing things from overheating.
@@SebisRandomTech Thanks!!
Somebody watches uxwbill-you are in good company.
Huge fan of him, always get excited when a video of his is in my Subscriptions feed!
2 things: Coffee filters are better than paper towels for removing old paste because they don't leave lint and I always remove the old past and replace it away from the computer(before inserting the chip)to be sure that I don't dribble alcohol or slop paste onto the mother board.
U use a T420 keyboard in T430 ?
Yes. Fairly easy mod to do.
