Okay..... So I pulled the laptop back apart and put the i5 back in and both RAM slots worked again. So several things could be wrong. Something might be wrong with the CPU, the laptop's BIOS and the CPU might not be playing well together, ect... I am not really sure what I am going to do at this point, because besides the memory issue everything is working great. I keep having to edit this comment because I keep running into conflicting evidence as to whether I can use a 16GB dimm in the T430. The i7 DOES support 32GB of RAM according to the Intel spec sheet (though that might not be referring to a 2X 16gb dimm config) but I am not sure if the T430 BIOS/chipset supports 16GB dimms. Some say yes and some people say no. Any input on this would be appreciated.
Update: I just upgraded the T430 to the latest BIOS and that did not change anything (which was super easy, I am not sure where I read that it would be difficult, they were wrong). The top RAM slot still does not work not matter what configuration I try.

      Just a theory...
I recall reading somewhere, Thinkpads having stability issues when using Quad core-i7 cpus, it had something to do with the motherboard not being able to provide enough juice to the processor, and maybe that could affecting your Dimm slot as well :P

@@alexf1515 an i5-4300m, but the t440p had multiple different factory options, any cpu made for Socket G3(FCPGA-946) should work, the highest end cpu is the i7-4940mx, but I don't recommend it for the t440p because it is has a 57w tdp and you'd need either a 135w or 170w ac adapter just to charge it, the best cpu to go with would be either the i7-4702mq or i7-4712mq, they both are 37w and are 4 core 8 thread, only downside is that for some dumb reason ebay sellers think they should be more expensive then the 47w equivalents the 4700mq or 4710mq, even thought the 4700mq and 4710mq are clocked higher, so best thing to do would be to wait for a great deal on either the 4702mq or 4712mq if you don't want to wait get the 47w cpus and undervolt them using throttlestop, there's also the 4800mq, 4810mq, 4900mq, and 4910mq which are all 47w don't go with the 57w cpus the t440p weren't designed for them

    • @Montisaquadeis

Yeah I was going to post that the rough non backlight is the safer option when it comes to germs as it has the antimicrobial coating on it compared to the backlight one where the coating is not there hence the difference in texture between the 2.

Actually the roughtness on the keys is the antimicrobial coating, which does not allow light to shine through. A lot of people hate it, but I think it rocks, love that textured feeling. As for the RAM, Lenovo site specifies that it supports up to 16Gb so I'd suggest to clear CMOS by taking out the cell battery after CPU swap. It may be some weird config stored in the BIOS that carries when you swap them.

does anyone know if there's a limitation of how much RAM could actually be held in there like maybe only 8 gigabytes and you're trying to put in more than it can take I'm just wondering about that cuz I would like my ram to be more but right now I only have 8 gigabytes I have not opened up my computer yet to see if it's two sticks or one but I doubt it I think it's two sticks if you would have had a higher stick in there and might not function maybe that's just part of the configuration of this particular operating layout

Hey, just wanted to drop by and say thanks. I'd been looking for a decent used or refurbished laptop to practice Pentesting and other infosec things, and based on your videos you got me looking seriously at the T430.
I ended up finding one on eBay for $190, in really good condition, that came with a 256GB SSD and Windows 10 ( which i need for business), 1600x900 display, and I added a second SSD in the DVD drive to dual boot Kali Linux.
I may add the backbit keyboard, will definitely upgrade to 16GB RAM...but otherwise I'm extremely happy with this model and will probably grab a refurbished T440 down the line that I can run Parot Linux on.
Can't thank you enough for featuring this model as well as talking about other Lenovo's. They are really good refurb deals, and there's plenty of them out there,.

And it's a really nice machine, especially for 320$, but I always use a dock and a 1080p external monitor at home, because I just cannot stand the crappy TN panel. The T430S in 2023 is very cheap on Ebay now! This laptop I am typing on has the 3rd generation i5, (fast enough for me), 16 GB RAM, 250 GB SSD, DVD Drive, screen perfect, Charger, Battery still holds a little charge. With Zorin OS, 16.2 Core, I can do everything I need!
One can get those newer flat keyboard laptops, no panels for the RAM and Hard Drive, no DVD drive, i3, 8 GB RAM, 250 SSD for $399, Windows 11, (and we have a few), yet I am liking this laptop better that those, and it is over 12 years old!

Only another thing it could be with the memory - DDR3 SODIMM's can potentially be two different voltages - 1.5 volts and 1.35 volts - if you mixed voltages between the SODIMM's they won't boot in the notebook (it won't pass the power on self test) - and I also realise that this video is now over a year old - so I hope you've now solved your issue :) - Nice Video btw

According to Lenovo, the best CPU you could buy for that notebook was the i7 3520M. That leads me to believe the CPU you bought is possibly just not compatible with the BIOS/chipset/mobo and lead to that compatibility issue. I have a T430 myself, and I love it! Might snag an i7 for it, just to keep things relevant. Oh, you've got a spare mini-PCI slot underneath the laptop; look into external GPU solutions, they exist! Or maybe an SSD.

It's clearly pronounced "MAte", not "Maté" in Spanish, because it's a spanish word. Some original developers were from Uruguay and Argentina, and half of the tools have spanish names, like "Hoja" (leaf) or "Caja" (box) It's a really common herbal beverage, like tea, but bitter. So no, the developers don't want you to pronounce it like some weird french word.

I have a near exact setup as yours, I bought a T430 for like 100 bucks, it was is dGPU version with the 1600x900 Display and backlit keyboard in perfect conditions with the Intel 180gb SSD. Almost immediately got the same CPU (the 3612QM) and some months later a new sealed docking station for very cheap (A long story where the seller was offering the 4338 model, sent me a a sealed 4337 and i was able to retrieve like 20% of the original cost because the seller didn't respond to my complaints) I'm even thinking on installing an eGPU (god I really love that laptop).
Some days ago I bought an 8gb DDR3 HyperX RAM to upgrade from 12gb to 16gb as I needed more ram (I like to do AE stuff like motion graphics and Live2D). I had the same problem as you, changed the 4gb for the new 8gb stick, and when i tried to turn the laptop on, only a black screen. When I tried to put the original 4gb back in, it didn't worked either, so I was really worried that the decision of upgrading was going to end in a forced downgrade. After a lot of tests and changing the ram placement over and over, cleaning the board and the sticks and other stuff i did, it finally worked. I don't remember what was the final setup, but i think I installed the new ram on the top slot, and the old on the bottom. I never knew how and why all of that happened, but until now I haven't had any problems whatsoever, the laptop is working like a charm, and i promised myself never to touch the ram sticks ever again hahaha.

I'm using it on my Alienware M14xR2 (my Sager NP7358 is busy getting completely ruined by the manufacturer and I got this gaylienware for $50 idc) and it helps a lot with boot times and frequently used programs. Inspiring vid for this old guy. Just got a refurbed T430 to replace wife's WinXP Satellite.
She'll never need more than the 8G but --- one thing came to mind about that slot mystery vis a vis the BIOS idea was the old Pentium criteria about memory bus speed. Probably a dinosaur of a suggestion since I am sure you matched the speed and parity specs.
My big question though is whether or not you think the display change made a noticeable enough difference, for say, just plain old Photoshop tasks.
Guessing that the Intel graphics is integrated. Would be nice to swap in a new card and run external monitor over 1600*900.

So, for those of you who have actually upgraded the CPU to a quad, you are saying that you have not had cooling issues? At all?
That is my biggest concern and why I am still leaning toward i7-3520M.
I know I won't see a huge performance kick, but the i7-3520M runs a bit cooler than the i5 my T430 came with.
Note: to the naysayers: I have already moved to 500gb SSD and am maxed at 16GB of
    RAM (G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3L 1600 Model F3-1600C9D-16GRSL). FYI: the RAM I use is great, but it runs a wee bit hot.

I have a thinkpad t440p that used to have a dual core i5 4300m. I wanted to upgrade to an quad i7 but I was also worried about overheating. I decided to give it a shot and I replaced the i5 with a quad core i7 4700mq, and I haven't had any issues with cooling. Heck, when I'm browsing the web or doing other light tasks the fan doesn't turn on at all.

I have an i7-3720qm (45W) in my t430. It is works fine with usual developer stuff. Sometimes in few cases it can hit the 100C and do throttling (also I use it in a docking station, that can affect airflow). I need to clean the cpu fan more often to keep it cool. You need at leas 90W power supply for charging. The 65W small one will not be recognised after upgrade to 4 core. Also you can choose from the 35W i7-6xxxqm cpu line, but those have no vt-d, this is why I chosed the 3720qm, it is the smallest 4 core with vt-d as I know (and it is like 2x i5-3320m)

I mean you say its not a gaming machine, but frankly this technology is really impressive. You basically get to use one of the best designed laptops of all time with upgrades for modern use. You can definitely play some games on here. My guess is you can run gameboy emulator and even DS emulator on this machine. And correct me if I'm wrong but it should be able to run Minecraft as well with quite low settings and an optimization mod that increases performance a lot. In fact that optimization mod allows you to turn on more things to make the game run faster.

I got my T420 for roughly $300 $220 for the laptop and $70 for a brand new lenovo 9cell battery. Beats out any brand new $300 laptop in both specs since most of then have atom based celerons aka N2840 for an example and in durability. I can beat someone to death with this T420 and have it sill work perfectly fine afterwards NOT so much with those new $300 laptops.

Montisaquadeis So true! anything in this pricepoint brand new is going to be either a chromebook, or an utterly garbage windows laptop. Part of the magic in electronics and computers is the depreciation. Our thinkpads and latitiudes would have cost $1000 or more back in the day, but now they can be had for less than half that cost. Technology really hasnt changed all that much, other than gpu's and power consumption. But who gives a shit when youve got a 9 cell battery? :D

    • @Montisaquadeis

Fat Max Yeah the reason I plan on snagging a Sager NP8155 is becuase of the upgrade in GPU becuase I am a gamer and my nvs 4200m sucks for anything newer then mid 2000s while the cpu could easily handle newer titles. I need to save even more money then what I currently have to get the new laptop. the i5 in the t420 itself is fine in every day tasks but i just need the newer gpu.

If you install the wrong RAM, it will refuse to boot. Check your original DDR RAM and see what it says on the label. If the specs between the original and the new are listed differently, there will be an issue. A PC3 is not the same as PC3L. If you don’t pay attention, your laptop is going to reject what’s installed.

as for the memory issue if you swap the cpu back in and both slots work again it means that there is an issue with the memory controller in the 3612qm you purchased. I know through experience I cooked an i7 2600ks ability to run dual channel memory by pushing it too hard while overclocking. It would only post with 1 stick of ram in it. Swapped motherboards, used different dimms and everything.

You absolutely need to upgrade the bios... I have a t420, which came with an i5 2540m.. Now has an i7 3630qm... 4C/8T ... went up 10 watts, but the chipset can handle the entire gamut of 2nd and 3rd gen i5/7 cpus... all of them.. .even the extreme series. These machines simply didn't offer them. They also claim far less max ram than they not only can handle stock, but can handle even more after a cpu, but more importantly, BIOS upgrade. You MUST update the bios to a modified version... one with the micro code for the qm cpus if not 3rd gen (if using) architecture. Your ram will work again, you will be able to use dual channel, which is super important, and should always be preferred over single stick solutions... But most importantly, your scores were poop, and will improve vastly. I went from a 3800 passmark to a 7600, thats the difference you should be seeing... and if going 3rd gen from 2nd, you'll also gain intel HD 4000 IGP over the older 3000.... not that any intel IGP is good... but this upgrade is noticeable to say the least, and without the bios update, you won't see any of these improvements... actually, it will be of a hindrance (the cpu upgrade) overall than anything.

I had a very similar problem with a Dell Optiplex 9020 where I did a CPU swap and suddenly half my RAM wasn't working but not only half the RAM wasn't working but it was only operating in single channel mode. The board supports 4 sticks of RAM in dual channel mode. Anyway long story short what turned out to be the problem for me was either a slight bit of dust/lint that made it's want into the CPU socket during the CPU swap. Or the other thing it might have been simply was one or more of the pads on the bottom of the CPU was dirty due to me accidentally touching it or some other form of contamination. In any case upon blowing out the CPU socket and cleaning the bottom of the CPU itself I put it back in and magically everything worked as normal. It's probably long over due tips to try now but if you or anyone else is having a similar RAM issue following a CPU swap clean the bottom of the CPU and blow out the socket itself. Even if you can't see anything, something might still be there. I learned this lesson from first hand experience.

What specifications are the two sticks of RAM ?
You keep saying DDR3 RAM but @ 8:36/14:41, the Crucial products are DDR3L (low voltage RAM 1.355v) which can run at either 1.35v or 1.5v.
DDR3 RAM only run at 1.5v, if the laptop/i7 CPU only accept 1.5v RAM then it should be fine to combine DDR3 and DDR3L BUT if the laptop/i7 CPU only accepts 1.35v (DDR3L) then the conflict will cause the laptop not to Boot.
Also if the laptop/i7 CPU accepts DDR3 1.5v RAM and the DDR3L stick has issue with conforming/switching to 1.5v then it will also not Boot.
The final question is "How much do you trust that 'friend' not to have sold you a defective stick of RAM. Is your friendship worth more than 30 bucks ?

The other possibility is the power adapter is insufficient to boot a quad core. I’d go that route before replacing the motherboard. A more powerful charger brick should do the job.
