Have a good look over the lyrics guys. She’s singing about her actual baby not her boyfriend. She’s found out she is pregnant and she wants to keep the child but is frightened of her fathers reaction. There’s even the lyric of ‘my friends keep telling me to give it up’. Madonna has always been pro choice so she’s not anti abortion in any way but this song just happens to be about a young woman deciding to go through with an unplanned pregnancy and the problems/difficulties that entails.

Exactly. Back then when a girl was described as being "in trouble", it was a euphemism for being unwed and pregnant.

Perhaps we Madonna fans have over cautioned them a bit about many of her songs being ironic or metaphoric or having dual interpretations.
But yeah, this ain't one of them. 😊

Madonna’s fourth #1 single, and rightfully so. As with Like A Prayer this one is just as relevant today, probably even more so, than it was in 1986. Madonna’s acting is top notch and she gave such an emotional and passionate vocal performance. I get chills everytime she sings “Pleeease.” You can feel that fear, uncertainty and desperation. She knocked this one out.

Absolutely love this song.. Then and now... She got so much criticism and she faced it all head on.. She, really was, an incredible trail blazer.. And if you like storytelling.. Wait till you see her live work from this era onwards.. She got full creative control and her shows gave themes, arcs, storytelling and incredible messages and choreography/theatre involved in it.. Love her.. Love this journey you guys are on.. Its was this and Live To Tell(Ballad) that got me hooked.. In 1986.

“Shortly after its release, the song caused heated discussions about its lyrical content. Women's organizations and others in the family planning field criticized Madonna for encouraging teenage pregnancy, while groups opposed to abortion saw the song as having a positive anti-abortion message. “
Her friends are telling her to give up the baby.
But the baby she is talking about is inside her.
She is worried her father will be mad about her pregnancy.

The actor playing her dad in the video is Danny Aiello ( pronounced "I, yellow" ) played hundreds of small roles until his huge role in "Do the Right thing" as Sal, the pizzeria owner. I think he's retired now.
And yes, Modanna consciously channeled Marilyn Monroe and other Hollywood greats and was known for trying on different personas. She is a student of celebrity, and only Cher has a longer stretch as an A-list celebrity going on like 50 years. for Modanna it's been about 40 but still going strong.

fun fact : Her style during this era of her career was intentionally influenced by Marilyn Monroe. If you haven't seen her video for Material Girl, it's actually filmed off of a direct scene from Marilyn Monroe's movie, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. or watch her performance at the 1990 Oscars for Sooner of Later which for me is probably her best live vocals and her look is definitely Marilyn there.

There was a 1950s revival in fashion during the 80s, in large part due to Madonna adopting and reinterpreting the style of Old Hollywood actresses.
Here, she's actually channeling Jean Seburg, an American actress who rose to fame in the French new wave cinema.
The gamine (or boyish) hairstyle, the striped jersey, ballet flats etc.

one of her best, and as we know she's been a huge ABBA fan, the intro might have been inspired by As Good As New from ABBA, overall her True Blue album back then had much ABBAesque vibes to me... La Isla Bonita, True Blue.. I always thought that it could have been an ABBA record if ABBA had been 15 years younger and broke in that era...

Agree. The inspiration by choosing strings orchestration as an intro is rather clear that was done after 'AsGoodAsNew'Also the fab 'La Isla Bonita' sounds 'pure Abba'.Even the music press at the time was stating this when the 7 inch was released.Twas also co-written by Agnetha's partner.

Means I'm keeping my unborn child. So you see at the end of the video when she tells her father she's pregnant he doesn't like it but he eventually accepts it.
The story is there..her bf says he's going to marry her and they can raise a little family... her friends tell her to give it up (baby) because she's to young. How can Anyone miss the meaning of this song? Even on a first listen.

So glad you are digging Madonna. Her style, her messaging/story telling, vision, energy and versatility as a performer all explain her longevity and why she is the “Queen” and an Icon. And don’t worry that you didn’t get that she was referring to an actual baby. For some reason almost all of the “younger generation” reactors to this video don’t get that. Also don’t take some of the criticism on here too personally😉 You should also check out “Secret”, “Live to Tell” and “Rain”. And to mix it up a little you should also check out “Express Yourself” from the Blonde Ambition Tour, “Future Lovers/I Feel Love” from her Confessions Tour , “La “Isla Bonita” from her Girlie Show Tour, “Give It To Me” from her Sticky and Sweet Tour and “Girl Gone Wild” from her MDNA Tour because all of her live performances are🔥🔥🔥🔥.

Hi guys. Nice reaction. To put it in context for you. The premise of the song/video is about a teenage girl who gets pregnant and she decided to "keep her baby". Of course, she got a lot flack for this back in '86 when it was first released Some conservative and religious leaders protested against her, even though she was singing about not giving up her baby.
And Papa Don't Preach kicked off the release of her new album TRUE BLUE at the time, so it was really her FIRST huge transformation when it comes to her look. Before she wore loads of lace, jewelry, bows, and accessories, and had ratty semi dirty Blonde hair. She was going for Hollywood Glamour. It wasn't necessarily the look at the time, but she made it so after making the transformation. She was recently married to an actor and they made a film together and she made "Who's That GIrl" film during this period as well. So again, she was going for Hollywood Glam.
Despite the controversy, the song was huge and this is the album where she began her peak, and became a world wide star. She had already gain some ground with her previous album, but this album elevated her to mega status. She maintain that status until about 1992. She was hugely famous, right up there with Michael Jackson, Elvis and the Beatles. Since '92 she's had some lows and highs, but still maintained an iconic status until this very day. With each new album/era... there was a new look and a new sound from her. By the 2000's, her tours were spectacles and the show to see. She's a true superstar. I look forward to your next Madonna reaction.

Nice reaction, yeh Madonna did go through a Monroe phase, in the 80s it became a kinda iconic look for her, especially the look on the True Blue album, so like Michael Jackson she became rather untouchable and could sell songs just by the quality of the material and with little promotion. For those wondering why songs were mostly five minutes long before the year 2000. It's for two reasons. 1st, back then songs had many changes within a song and time flew hearing the chord progressions changes. The other reason was that radio stations had less commercials back then and you can actually hear four or five songs in a row without the DJ even talking. Then, when commercials increased songs had to become shorter or they would ban long songs from the radio. So, songs became four minutes long. Now songs are down to about three minutes and thirty seconds. The other reason songs are shorter is because today's music is very repetitive. Today songs start and finish the same way. So songs the repeat the same hook or beat over and over gets tiring and boring after three minutes. Today's music is only getting worse with the exception of singers like Bruno Mars, Rosalia and Adele that still make unique interesting music.

The moral majority was totally freaked out about this song, which is kind of ironic considering she's basically arguing for not getting an abortion! Isn't that their whole freaking agenda? In any case, you kids are so sweet listening to old songs. But they still feel new to me!!! (I feel old :( )

Madonna has never said what the song is about. People assume abortion. But “keeping my baby” could equally refer to keeping the new boyfriend.

I hope you know the story behind the music video is she got pregnant with the boyfriend and the lyrics are about "Keeping the baby" as in the unborn child. Abortion is murder.

You two were way off! Lol! She is supposed to be a pregnant teen. That’s why her dad looked mad. Cause she had just told him. That’s what she meant when she said she is keeping her baby.

Why don't you get what she's singing about? She's not singing about her boyfriend but about her actual baby! She's pregnant and just doesn't know how to tell this to her dad. She's singing she's "in an awful mess" and "in trouble deep". All of her friends say her boyfriend is a troublemaker but exactly this troublemaker promises to marry and raise a little family with her. At the end the father understands and shows his affection. So the video very much helps the lyrics to be understood. And STILL you don't get it. Please, guys ;-)

This was very controversial back in the day...a pro-choice song.
