I always felt she was begging him to not preach that what she did was wrong and kick her out. The whole line "Daddy, don't stop loving me Daddy" hits that way.

Back in the day, it was well known that “papa” wasn’t just her father but also a subtle dig at the Pope, hence the preaching. Catholics back in the day were furious at the insult

Back then, “preach” meant parents were telling the kid what to do, what he/she should or shouldn’t have done, etc, etc..without listening to what the kid has to say. It’s a one-sided, sometimes patronizing conversation. She’s saying she wants advice but she also wants to be heard.

Preach has a double meaning. It’s not as well known now, but back in the 80’s everyone knew that she criticized the pope (Papa) for condemning unwed mothers.

I was 17 when I got pregnant with my baby. I was 18 when I had him. This song came out when I was still pregnant and my dad was angry with me and for me. I didn't understand his point of view, but he didn't understand me either. But I loved my kids dad and I wouldn't change a thing. This song meant a lot to me when it came out.

Worldwide No. 1 hit and album followed but parents and church went crazy condemning her for encouraging teenage pregnancy but she wasn't.. She was saying it happens, shit happens, and young girls get pregnant.. so Papa/Patriachy/Pope/Parents don't judge! Instead Support!
Pro choice.. and just looking out for the kids rather than saying go get pregnant.. If you keep exploring Madonna you'll see the themes, the guts, the messages and she never shied away from controversy in fact embraced it.. All the creative control is hers.. She is so underrated in my opinion as they all say she was just a shock jock for publicity.. as if there's not more to her than that 35 years later she's still doing it.. They gave her 6months tops!

Surprisingly it was mainly the progressives that hated this song and called Madonna "reckless" for encouraging teenaged girls not have an abortion. "She has a huge teenaged girl fanbase, and she is telling them that keeping a child when they are not financially or emotionally prepared for it," I'm paraphrasing here, but you get my drift. They really went after her. There was even an answer record called "Madonna Don't Preach".

Madonna was raised catholic so the preach part refers to her dad preaching about being an unwed teen mum.

I always figured from this video that she is in high school and her father warned her about her new boyfriend. He didn't like him or trust. When she finds out she is pregnant all her friends tell her to not have the baby. She decides to keep the baby. She needs to tell her father but doesn't want him to preach about the fact he warned her about her boyfriend. And she didn't listen. She knows that she's in trouble she needs help. And needs her father to accept her decision. And to give her advice on what she needs to do. That's what I always thought this video was about.

Pops preaching at her would probably be, "I told you about that kid!"

This song is about teenage pregnancy. Madonna takes the voice of a confused teenager who wants advice from her father at a difficult time. In a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone, she said: "It just fit right in with my own personal zeitgeist of standing up to male authorities, whether it's the pope or the Catholic Church or my father and his conservative, patriarchal ways."
The line "I've made up my mind, I'm keeping my baby," caused anti-abortion groups to praise Madonna and abortion-rights groups to criticize her. Madonna refused to take a stance on the issue.
Madonna called this "a message song that everyone is going to take the wrong way."
This was one of the most controversial Madonna songs. Many articles were written about it in the context of abortion. The media attention helped make it a hit and keep it on the charts.
A producer named Brian Elliot wrote this song for a new artist he was working with named Christina Dent, who was on the same label as Madonna. When a record company executive heard it, he convinced Elliot to give it to Madonna instead, because she was an established star.
This was one of the first Madonna songs to take on a political issue. Her previous hits, like "Holiday," "Borderline," and "Lucky Star," stayed well clear of controversy.
The video featured Danny Aiello as Madonna's father. He recorded an answer song from the father's perspective called "Papa Only Wants The Best." Aiello was mostly unknown at the time, but went on to star in Do The Right Thing and Moonstruck.
Around this time, Madonna was working out and had a more toned body that she showed off in the video by wearing a tight black outfit. It was rumored that you could see her nipples when she leaned back.
Ozzy Osbourne's daughter, Kelly, recorded this with Mike Einziger and Jose Pasillas from the group Incubus for the soundtrack to The Osbournes, an MTV show about Ozzy's home life. Kelly's mom, Sharon Osbourne, asked her to do it. Her version peaked at #74, making it the first instance of a cover of a Madonna song reaching the Hot 100. Osbourne's rendition also reached #3 in the UK singles chart.
The guy who plays Madonna's boyfriend in the video is Alex McArthur, who is featured in the Desperado movies. (Thanks, Linda - Oudenaarde, Belgium) >>
In its review of the album True Blue, Rolling Stone magazine referred to this song as "Madonna's Billie Jean." Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" had a similar theme, about a pregnancy complicating people's lives. Jackson has been called "The King Of Pop," while Madonna has been referred to as "The Queen of Pop."
Rock critic Dave Marsh gave this song a glowing review: "that ultimate rarity - a message song that opens with Beatles-esque cellos that you can dance to." >>
This won Best Female Video at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards.

She took ballet as a kid and a teenager. She also took dance lessons after she dropped out of college. She had gone to college on a dance scholarship. She took dance lessons from Martha Graham and she went to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for awhile. She was also a backup dancer for awhile too.

There's a difference between preaching and advice. I always felt like when people preach, they talk at you and try to force their opinions and beliefs on you. Advice is when someone takes your feelings, beliefs, and goals into accounts before giving ideas on ways to move forward.

When this song came on the radio I was 18 and pregnant and I had my daughter. My family the women in the family. Had their family meeting and they all came to the agreement that if I was going to have this baby they would be there for me but there were many times when she became a teenager and that teenager pissed me off and I wish I never had her but as a mother you have to chalk some stuff up as TEENAGE BEHAVIOR. I think we did a pretty good job, she's 40 with no children and she's a CPA so I say we did good although we spoiled her rotten and sometimes when she's around me she likes to try and fall back into that teenager mode and have to look at her and say "AREN'T YOU 40?" 😂😂😂😂That makes her so mad when I remind her of her age 😂😂😂😂😂😂 but that tickles the hell out of me to see her reaction 😂😂😂😂 I love being a mother cause I can make my day by seeing the look on her face, it doesn't happen often but when it does I am LMAO 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I had a friend get pregnant at age 13 in the early 00's and her parents just washed their hands of her. They kicked her out and refused to even speak to her. She had to drop out of school and move in with her boyfriend's family because she was 13, pregnant, and homeless. Now imagine what a girl in the 80's had to face at 18. That's the "preaching" she's talking about and why she said "don't stop loving me".

What I told the title “Papa Don’t Preach” as is, don’t pass judgement on & instead of giving me the father lecture, give me the support of a father bc that’s what I need. This was a HUGE & controversial song back in the day. Teenage pregnancy was one of the topics that was in the limelight. I never got pregnant in my teens, but I was so glad that Madonna made this song back in the day bc the message was something a lot of parents needed to hear. I know several of my friends were so scared to tell their parents. One didn’t tell until her mama pulled the car over & told her to just tell her.... She knew. lol

Madonna was more 90s than 90s in the 80s. Always pushing the envelope. She did a lot of good things for American society and for women and a few not so good things, in my estimation, but no one can deny her success as a singer. Edit: Oh crap, the Dad is coming out in you. I'm officially scared now. LOL.

I learned in a rock history class that Madonna worked with Michael Jackson and mtv before MTV was even Popular. She got popular because of MTV and then started hanging out with Michael Jackson cause he gave money to help MTV launch so they played his videos and they needed more black and Latino singers so Michael was the one they felt like playing. More inclusion didn’t come til later but Michael included Madonna a lot in her 80s music because they were hanging out a lot in the 80s with mtv launching.

Madonna wasn't not a teenager when she made this video, but I think she's playing a teenager in the video. She wants to keep the baby herself and raise the baby herself . . . so obviously Papa would either tell her to give it up for adoption or abort it. One of those two. This video was shot in Staten Island, NY I believe.

Madonna was a dancer first. At this time in history, a girl who got pregnant was looked down on. Madonna is Italian. Traditional. You get married first, then pregnant. Again, Madonna was pushing those boundaries. Madonna is an ICON. She was more than a dancer or a singer....she changed perceptions. YES, he would be preaching about keeping the baby.

Madonna was a dance major at the University of Michigan. The song came out right after I found out I was pregnant with my son when I was 21. I had to have this conversation with my dad. Thirty years later I would’ve kept my son & not married that boy. My family ended up giving us all the support we needed.

I took this song as a teenage pregnancy & she is hoping her father doesn’t kick her out or stop loving her. She wanted to make it clear that she was keeping the baby & not to preach to her about she messed up her life, she should give it up or abort it.

Madonna started off as a dancer. She was/is the whole package and in the 80s she was the closest female equivalent to Michael Jackson (it's funny that four MJ videos popped up as recommendations at the end of the video). I always interpreted "preach" to mean "lecture." She wants his support and advice but she's going to make her own decision. I think the character in the song is probably in her late teens (maybe early 20s). Young enough to be living at home in the 80s at least!

I always interpreted as I know I "messed up" this isn't what you had in mind for me and right now I really don't need you yelling at me and being angry, I need your support. And don't be at angry at the guy he's a good person even though that's not the type of guy you wanted for me. Wr need your help on how to figure this out.

Just saw your page for the first time now, and subscribed because you did this song. Without having seen your videos ... if you haven't reacted yet ... Madonna's other big '80s songs were Take a Bow, Live to Tell, Burning Up, Like a Prayer, Material Girl, Borderline, Like a Virgin (and there are a few others). You could spend a week doing her songs and videos.

I think it means preach end of world consequences w sex and daughters decisions. I think it’s from perspective of teenager being shunned.
