      Even more, I worked in corpo and usually you work there 8 hours a day, and if you want more you need to take extra hours (paid), but that may be due to the law I got in my country so I am not sure if this is true for everyone in the world.

      @Name Unavailable well I’ve heard that statement more than 5 times already. One of my friends is a cartoonist and she has been put down many times because ppl say “she doesn’t have to do any real work” and “being an artist is easy stop making a big fuss”. So yes, some stupid people still don’t understand what it is to be a professional artist.

      @Name Unavailable disagree. I've watched a lot of Professional Artists who are getting paid a good amount of money, especially commission works, Like for example Akiane kramarik, who literally bought her parents a house by selling art at a young age.

      and if you get a bad editor you can have a pretty crappy time, kinda like how Tite Kubo disliked his editor as he didn't let him really do what he wanted to do for his story and kinda made decisions that Tite didn't really agree with but was forced to do it or he wouldn't have been published in shonen jump

      @@jj2002ful this is how the competitive scene of weekly mangas are as the company still has to mind their sales. Each weekly chapter the mangaka gets paid alot so of course the editors get a say on how the story gets paced. Manga magazine publishers like Shonen JUMP have their series voted on by their readers each week and they tally them to see which are the popular ones; these are the ones that stay around the longest. Those that drop from expected results get axed and are forced to close up the story, and I'm pretty sure you've read manga that had really abrupt endings. The popularity ranking is also a determining factor on how many copies they produce for a Tankoubon for specific series as this helps predict how fast or how long before the copies sell out in stores.

    • @kchorro2012
      @kchorro2012 3 роки тому +3

      @@jj2002ful That's how those publishers work, when a series becomes popular enough the publisher will try to milk it for all its worth so they'll need the mangaka to make the story as long as possible. It's a business after all, the publisher may not be creating the manga but every series is basically an investment risk for them. Some famous examples of these kind of creative differences include Death Note and Yu Yu Hakusho.

    As much as I love Paolo's videos, his "Day in the Life of" series doesn't exactly show a true "average" person's life. The people he follows in this series live a very well-off life compared to many people in Japan.
    (For example, his Day in the Life of a Typical Japanese Office Worker in Tokyo shows an office building with wide-open office spaces, a bakery, a gym, and a petting zoo! "Typical" offices DO NOT have that)
    MANY Japanese mangaka artists don't have nearly as much luxury as this artist has. They usually have very cramped small spaces cause that's all they can afford in the crowded city of Tokyo (forget the drawable walls). Publisher's notes are like bills; you hate them and yet they never stop piling up. Add your Editor to it and you're stuck with practically UA-cam comments coming at you. You'll have cool modern tablets to draw with only if you can afford it (you usually can't). No need for exercise equipment since you won't have time to use it. Speaking of, getting to sleep 7 hours in one night is a dream within a dream for many mangakas! If I remember, the artist for One Piece had a time when he slept about that much in a WEEK; 30-40 minute naps here and there. So so so many mangakas end up getting severe health problems because of lack of self-care during their career.
    This mangaka seems to be doing good so far and I'm happy for him. But I see this as a "TV friendly" rendition of a mangaka's life, a sort of "what your room looks like vs what it looks like with guests" sort of way.

Mangaka usually sleep less than Reiji so he has it made for him and they usually work every day unless it's a holiday or the mangaka is on break. Eiichiro Oda is the manga artist that works 4 weeks in advance, I'm not sure if other creators work the same schedule he does that are produced in the same magazine but I'm sure they're not to different.

Basically, he sets up recording equipment at fellow mangaka's workspaces to see how they work over the course of a few days, then he has the mangaka come in to watch the footage with him to comment on their processes, thoughts on tools and materials, etc. It's incredibly insightful. My favourite episode features Higashimura Akiko, who has a very confident hand.

    FYI-This mangaka has it very good, like top 1% or less of manga,he has assistants,he has a decent studio, and those cost a TON of money to run,to pay assistants.
    Not to mention that making money from your manga is mostly luck,so if you wanna pursue this one caree, you are absolutely insane!

    Coming in late but this is NOT the typical setup and schedule of the average mangaka, Reiji's manga is doing extremely well right now (as well as it's anime) so he can afford all of this luxuries. Also, most mangaka don't get to sleep that much, even some of the biggest have lots of health problems due to their work hours. Don't get me wrong, 12 hours every day is A LOT, but most mangaka have it worse.
    Also, lots of artists still prefer to do traditional drawing, at least for the inking and tones, and some will color digitally.
    And yes, aside from the manga itself, they usually will have to work on color pages for the magazine, promotional colored illustrations for other media and stuff, so they don't really get that much free time.
    I urge you to read Bakuman (it's by the same duo that made Death Note), it follows the story of 2 kids trying to become mangaka serialized in Jump, it's obviously a tad exaggerated for dramatic purposes, but it's still pretty spot on in terms of the life of a mangaka and relationship with the publisher and editors, and shows the brutality of how the magazines deal with unpopular series. It's reaaaaaaally good.
