As a creator (although completely another content type), I always look forward to such videos. Sometimes I can't even imagine how difficult it is to shoot some moments, and it's very interesting to see what techniques you use. And, more importantly, what thoughts you have. Wish you more inspiration.

I attended a survival course when I was a kid. The amount of energy just to look for food while surviving bites from flyes and other natural discomforts is insane and demotivating. Developing some technology is going to help on these tasks but it also adds more stress and it's time consuming. The fact that you can add on top of that the shooting and editing activity is mindblowing for me as well as seeing you so relaxed and in good shape. Plus you are shooting as if you had the plot of the story in your mind already, which is another work in itself.
You are one of a kind for sure.

When I was a teen I discovered Les Stroud, Survivorman. I then began to explore more avenues and discovered a website called Primitive Tech that taught me more than just the art of getting out of the woods safe, I wanted to know how to get into the woods safe. Then I discovered UA-cam and naturally began looking for more teachers to aide me in my evolving interests of bushcraft. That's when I found your first channel, Primitive Technology and I was hooked. I gained alot of knowledge and much grief from my peers and family for wanting to live a more basic life. I allowed them to discouraged me and began to run the rat race like a good obedient boy.
I'm 30 now and have reflected on my path. There is a great emptiness that only the wilds have been able to fill. Rediscovering your channel has reminded me of what I've been missing and inspired me to take the risk and apply what you and many other great teachers have gifted to many. Thank you Chad Zuber for being you.

GRACIAS!

I know of several uses for deer antler!
Deer antler can be used as a pressure flaking tool for use in flintknapping.
Deer antler can also be turned into several things according to wikipedia, but something that may interest you more is "hartshorn salt". They're shavings of deer antler that can be used instead of baking powder and apparently produce extra crispy cookies that store for longer. Thinner cookies work better to let the ammonia escape.
Wikipedia does say that hartshorn is the antler of a *red* deer, but I can't imagine the composition of antler being very different between species.

Seaweed is a good food indeed. Good health benefits from it too. Man, you've been down there quite a while. How's it all going? If I put a thin layer of clay it will eventually wash away in the rains. I suppose that they would just reapply it after a while. I will experiment and see how it goes.

Oh Chad, thank you so much for sharing your life there , your camp, your plans and your thoughts. This was a super enjoyable video , and in no way too long. It was so great of you to share the aspects of your life , the projects and challenges, and the videoing of it all. You went to a lot of trouble to be able to share all of this with us. I loved how you shared your thinking process with us.
The new hut sounds absolutely awesome. It is going to be plenty big and sounds so awesome. I figure if for some reason you find you need more room you can create another hut next to, or close by your new hut. Though looking at the size of the new hut , I can’t think of the need for more room.
On the cracked brick , and any other future cracked brick, scoring, or roughing up the clay around the crack and using a little moisture, like what you did might help to repair the crack.
I was so impressed with the hole in the ground that you have created in mining for the material for the bricks. LOL! It does look like a swimming pool. The idea of using it for a covered work area sounds like a really good idea. It might even offer a little bit of cooling during the summer. Amazing all you have accomplished, especially in the torrid heat of summer there. Really impressed. That type of heat really takes a toll on you, especially while during heavy manual labor like what you have been doing.
Your idea for the roof sounds really good and since you have already experimented with roof you have on your temporary shelter shows it will work.

    • @molliejonte2732
      @molliejonte2732 3 роки тому +1

Also, thank you for showing and explaining your video equipment and what you have to do in order to shoot the videos. Just shooting the videos is a lot of work, besides all the work you are doing in order to survive and thrive.
Really looking forward to the new hut build , this should really be educational.
It is good that you have waited to build your new hut , because it has enabled you to become acquainted with the area, know how he sun travels , how the rain run off occurs and the sights that you enjoy. Speaking of rain run off, I think the trench, to divert the rain runoff is a super idea.
Oh, an idea for the antler might be to incorporate it into the hut for both decoration and a place to hang things on. Maybe put by the door so you can have the things you need, ready to grab, as you leave the hut. Just a note, antlers were used a carving material. Ancients would create tools and decorative items of them.
Another thought about the new roof. One is that using multiple layers will give great insulation. Second is that maybe partially weave the bark , especially the smaller material into the mat itself. That might make a tighter roof that would maybe help keep out leaks, then just lay the bigger pieces on top., like you are doing. The beauty about the juniper bark roof is that if a storm comes up and damages, or blows off part of the roof, is that it can be easily repaired. Great idea on the roofing material!! The woven juniper bark looks beautiful from inside the shelter. On a larger scale , like in your new hut, the ceiling will be beautiful!!!
Looking forward to after the new hut is built, when you will have a little time to create things It will be very interesting to watch and learn about weaving from you. Also, looking forward to the new pottery and seeing how the new clay will fire up. This will be a great and interesting journey. Just an idea, but maybe when you will have a little time you can create something using the little treasures, the feathers, rabbit skin or parts and any other things into an artwork for decorative purposes. . Maybe a fine weaving using these things. You could also use natural things to dye your cordage, and any other fibers , for a decorative weaving. Something to look forward to after all the hard work in building the new hut. Having time to be creative just for creativity sake, instead of survival. LOL! You have to be creative every step of the way in surviving and thriving where you are at.
Thank you again Chad for taking us along on this journey, and especially taking your extremely valuable and needed time, to make a video to share your life, thoughts and creative ideas. This has been so enjoyable and educational.
Just one last thing, I think if nothing else you should have a tourniquet handy at all times. You do a lot of hard and at times potentially dangerous things in your life there.
I too love and crave silence. I live pretty far out in the country and love and crave the silence. It has a very calming effect on me.
So glad the video was as long as it was.
Enjoyed every minute of it. Wish it would have been even longer. Thank you 🙏

Thank you so much Mollie for this very detailed comment! I'm happy you enjoyed this video. I intend to build a few different huts with different architectural styles of materials that I collect here. The next one that I build will probably be what is known in Mexico as a Temazcal. It is basically a sauna. I really want to make one. But there will be other buildings too, such as a small restaurant/bar and an outdoor gym. And yes, I often can fix cracks in the bricks by moistening them and then pressing more fresh mud into the crack. As long as the bricks aren't too dry then this method works well. I was surprised how difficult it was to do anything during the hot summer months. I really felt wasted most of the day. I tried to do the heavy work early in the morning or late in the evening. One advantage of the heat was that the bricks dried super fast. Now they take a lot longer to dry so I'm unable to produce them as quickly as before. Plus, the days are shorter now. I like your idea for the antler. Another person suggested it be the handle for door. Both are good ideas. I'm sure I will find more antlers out here in the future. A tighter weave of juniper bark would be beneficial but it is a bit difficult to achieve due to the nature of the bark and irregular thickness. Layers upon layers will definitely work though. I am really looking forward to creating useful and decorative things with the materials I've collected. I intend to weave bags, nets, baskets, make lots of pottery, tools, hunting gear, clothing, and decorative items as well. It's going to be so interesting. I can just imagine being inside the hut at night with the fire burning, some food cooking, while I work on these projects. I can't wait!!!

I love being able to watch and relate to someone that appreciates and enjoys the process of primitive living. I too am working on a hut that I am planning on using a wattle and daub method of creating walls and a roof thatched with tall grass. Your frustration with making compound tools only to see them break is so relatable to me. In order to speed up the process of gathering dirt and clay for my walls I made a digging stick out of a straight round piece of ash wood that thick but still small enough to be used as a handle. With limited materials I used a hafting method which was extremely effective and relatively simple as all I used was a flint hand axe and a small little piece of flint which I flaked serrations into to make somewhat of a saw. In order to make the handle I split the piece of wood into two pieces. Then I sawed a notch in the middle of each piece down the length of the wood so when they were put together there was a hollow hole in the handle which I hafted the bone into. I then ground the part of the bone I was hafting to the handle so that it fit tightly into the handle. Then I wrapped the two sticks together very tightly with some cordage. The part of the bone used for digging was ground into a thick tapered edge. Also I firehardened the wood. Only took about 3 hours to make and it digs with much more force than the stick I used to use. Maybe you could make a fishing hook too out of that bone.
