New Primitive Shelter and Friction Fire (episode 04)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 лис 2024
- I am very close to finding the ideal place to establish my new hut. My primitive tools have been useful for basic necessities and I’ve found several good natural resources along the way. Today in this video I move my camp to a better location and make a primitive shelter. While digging I find that the earth is hard with clay and I start to think about making mud bricks. Then my patience is tested as I struggle to make a friction fire which is so important in order for me to stay warm through the night. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?
I first started wearing sandals on outdoor adventures in February 2014. I’m so glad that I did because wearing these Luna Sandals has really helped strengthen my feet. You can see their selection of adventure and running sandals at this link: www.lunasandal...
(Note: I receive an affiliate commission from any sales derived from clicking on the link above)
Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 48.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including UA-cam. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free.
This man's content is better than any Netflix series. He deserves more subs.
True
So true!
@Richard Manfield Yeah but based on the quality of his content he derserves way more.

Most of all, I like to watch your channel on the topic of non-free survival. And you know why... because you are developing in this area, you are learning - and this is great ☝ 😏 💫 I myself do the same in Russia, including in winter🤝
Yes, every day I am learning. I am a student for life... What is non-free survival?
@@ChadZuberAdventures Learning is great. What I meant was that I don't use the items I brought from civilization. Survival only with what we find in nature. I don't use anthropogenic garbage either. Primitive survival technologies, to be precise.
Okay, I understand now.
I used to teach wilderness survival in the Sonoran Desert and I just relived every frustrating fire-making failure while watching this video. I was dying! I’m so glad he includes the struggle. There are few things more frustrating than not being able to start fire after you’ve done it a thousand times. This series is so good!
Yes, I was so frustrated because I had previously done it with less effort. Hahaha, but it's good to be humbled by nature.
@@ChadZuberAdventures It sure is. I know how hard you worked for that fire and how sweet the reward is. Awesome, man! I love it!
Most of humanity takes for granted how quick, and easy fire has been available to them through out there life's! A lot of us outdoorsman, hunting, an fishing types understand how hard fire can be to come bye! Things seem to slow way down in the wilderness! Being one with Earth, an nature is truly one of the best feeling's a human can have! Absolutely adore the place your videos take my mind, an spirit!
You are absolutely right about that. A match, lighter, or even a ferro rod can make fire seem to be an easy achievement. It's easy to take for granted the skills that native people's had. I'm really enjoying this journey and the landscape makes it that much better.
@@ChadZuberAdventures Amen brother!!! Stay strong! Make sure your fillin that belly, and gettin your vitamin C;)
Oh yeah, I heard that manzanita fruit is really high in vitamin C
This is a fantastic series. Captivating to watch. It is almost as if I was watching through a portal, back in time.
That's exactly my intention. Thank you!
many people find happiness in many things but when watching your content makes it seem as though the less you have the happier you are
To a certain point, yes. Less is more... The problem with material possessions is that they require our attention, they require management. If your house is big and full of belongings then it requires more cleaning and organizing. One thing I always disliked was organizing stuff that I didn't even need. That's when "stuff" takes over your time, and your time is your life. If your only possessions are things that are truly useful to you then you will find that you have much more free time to do the things you want and the things that are truly important.
These are ideas deep in human psyche and philosophically based as well. More is less and less is more. As Tyler Durden says in fight club.... The things you own end up owning you. Only until you lose everything is when you'll be free to do anything.
So true. We live in an old house. It isn't aesthetically pleasing but not an eyesore. We live off the grid. I line dry all our clothes. They last longer that way. I go through our stuff once a year and if we haven't worn or used it, it gets given away.
@@ChadZuberAdventures I'm alone please help me.
@@ytsrebgxhtrt233 what's he supposed to even do?
The UA-cam algorithm is sometimes very deep, didn't even know I could enjoy those kind of videos. However it is a good vibe in it, all against the mostly fast and energetic life we use to have. Greetings from Germany and stay safe!
Hallo
Gute Unterhaltung während der Pandemie
Wichtig!
This is the primitive life. You will find it a lot in India.
When I first learned the hand drill fire I used yucca stalks as the spindle and hearth board I had collected during a trip in Colorado, I noticed that I had a hard time creating producing embers with a spindle I had used before, I soon realized it was because the end of the spindle was charred during previous attempts the heat produced during the drilling process exposes the top of the spindle to heat that hardens it making it difficult since a low density softwood is the only viable option, for me simply scraping away the charred end on a rock to reveal a new soft spindle tip helped tremendously, not sure if this tip will help but i found it to be very useful
Yes, I scraped the tip a few times on a rock during the video. That is a good tip that should be emphasized. Thank you.
That seems really crucial. After he scrapes the stick on the rock, it still makes a really creaky sound. I think he didn't scrape enough, or rather on the right rock either. The rocks behind look much more abrasive and would remove more charred stick. Seen at 15:27
I can't wait to watch. These videos fill my soul.
I'm so happy to read this. Thank you!
Aaron Fu maybe your since you may not have many skills to survive, but Chad is a big disappointment to me.
Don’t get me wrong, he got a few skills above average person, but I can put him in my back pocket anytime, ( except the way he make pots and everything from clay). Otherwise he just takes advantage of ignorant people and the fact that UA-cam pays him good money which he can use for his retirement.
@@ChadZuberAdventures but can you read and respond to some constructive criticism????
@@peaceforall1291 He's just minding his own business. What's he gonna do? Tell UA-cam to stop any money from getting to him?
The scenery in my uncle's country is very beautiful👍

For an April Fools day episode, I'd love it if he tried doing this series in a Suburb or city
I've thought of doing that. It would be really interesting.
That would be awesome!
Oh boy, ive been patiently waiting for this video. Lots of content on UA-cam nowadays is very high energy and these videos match the chill that im going for. Love you Chad!
This one is really a chill relaxing video for sure.
this is so true
Good morning idol and I love you
@@ChadZuberAdventures chill? I almost had a panic attack when u couldn’t get the fire lol 😂.
These videos help so much with anxiety. Modern society/ life is just so stressful
Your verbal response to the initial failure of the firestarting was surreal to me! Up until now I had only heard you in voice over and had just accepted the silence as part of the lifestyle. It got me thinking that, in a survival situation, I would probably be rambling constantly about the task at hand. Do you talk to yourself off camera or anything, or do you work best in silence?
Probably when you live in the wild for a long time completely alone, you begin to get used to everything, and conversations become superfluous. Plus, I guess talking takes energy.
The only thing I don't understand is how he manages to do so much work and yet eat practically nothing. Man, this is a mystery I can't solve.
@@peace9375 its simple, he eats actual food when he gets home to upload the videos
There was a moment where you were breaking down wood for the lean-to, and reached down for a rock, and seeing your traps astonished me. Truly the real Tarzan.
Haha, really?
Chad, you're a year older than me. I love how you make things from the simple things around you x please keep making more of these fantastic videos, I appreciate the time and effort you go to, to produce them x

Thank you for your comment and for watching!
I love the quotes on these videos
That's good! I think they are good quotes.
Hey Chad, your hair is getting long! To keep cooler in the coming summer I suggest you plait it then wrap it like a 18th C queue. Maybe make some wide flat five/six part plaits out of yucca fibre for the wrappings. It's so much more comfortable to have your hair off your skin when it's really hot (I have hip length hair). There's a special way to secure plaits with cord/ribbon so it won't slip out, if you google medieval ribbon plait fastening you'd find it.
I hope you make (have already made?) your new hut near that river, there's probably clay around the riverbed if it's in the region, it collects in the bends especially during flooding. Really looking forward to seeing what you do.
You are true geniuses enjoy watching it with you and very awesome place

In the last video, you mentioned not being able to sleep because you were up all night feeding the fire.
