Elden Ring- Messmer's Crusader | Fire Knight's Greatsword Build (NG+)

- For this Build: This Elden Ring build is a Faith build centered around the Fire Knight's Greatsword, primarily set to the Flame Art Affinity using the Ashes of War, Flame Spear and Flame Skewer as well as Messmerfire Incantations such as Fire Serpent and Messmer's Orb. To start with my weapon of choice, the Fire Knight's Greatsword has a relatively unique moveset for a Colossal Sword as it has the Godslayer's Greatsword's light attack chain while also having the Zweihander's heavy attack pokes, which is very smooth. The weapon skills this build use are Flame Spear and Flame Skewer. Flame Spear is a fire-based projectile that can be fully charged to extend its range and damage (and is compatible with Godfrey Icon), has a hitbox on the weapon when used, can pierce through enemies, and provides a fire buff for 40 seconds, whereas Flame Skewer is a piercing attack akin to Giant Hunt that deals physical and fire damage that buffs the weapon with fire for about 15 seconds and can have a follow-up flash of Messmerfire and combos nicely into the light attack chain of the Fire Knight's Greatsword. Messmerfire Incantations act as situational ranged options as needed with Fire Serpent being a fast cast with decent range, tracking and damage and Messmer's Orb being a surprisingly quick cast that creates a massive AOE explosion and deals good stance damage. The main strategies of this build is to utilize Flame Spear or Flame Skewer frequently in combat to deal massive fire damage whiel also weaving in melee attacks that are buffed by using those weapon skills as the Fire Knight's Greatsword, when set to the Flame Art affinity, can have an incredibly high attack rating at its base power and when fully buffed.
Fire Knight's Flame Art Greatsword Attack Rating (AR) when two-handing and using Fire Scorpion: 985. (2020 when at Scadutree Blessing Level 20)
Fire Knight's Flame Art Greatsword AR when two-handing and buffed by Golden Vow, Howl of Shabriri, Flame Shrouding Cracked Tear, Fire Scorpion and a Flame Spear/Skewer buff: 1804. (3700 when at Scadutree Blessing Level 20)
Lastly, if facing a boss with high fire resistance (a la Mohg and Fire Giant), this build can be switched to the Sacred affinity as a situational alternative.

@@MG-lc5tv Welcome!
I have been looking for this type of content for a while and you finally popped up in my recommendations. Keep it up!
@@ZZzz-nb4ol Glad you enjoyed my content! Definitely have more DLC builds on the way
The fire knight greatsword is a beautiful weapon with a beautiful Moveset
Absolutely! Loved this run.
Recently found your channel thank you for all the build ideas gonna have multiple runs!
Thank you! Just doing my part to show people some weapons to play with. If you ever have questions on a build or weapon, I've got you.
Nicely done and great build you have. Building myself a dragon communion build, as well as a crucible build.
Keep in mind that Messmers helm grants 8% to fire knight skills AND it also boosts the incants by another 3% which stacks with the chest piece
@@fishnutz5196 Keen observation!
I mostly went with the Winged Serpent just cause I liked the look better.
@@ironstark917 fashion always comes first haha

Made a point to try to be as detailed as I could with this build since it is a new weapon and all
@@ironstark917 Thank you, really helps me understand the build. I absolutely love it.
Its crazy how this build is my exact setup atm, this weapon goes so hard lmao
@@aceosu7852 it really does. To be honest, Colossal Swords were far from my favorite class in the game with few exceptions, but this weapon is absolutely perfect in every aspect. Great moveset, infusible, suits many playstyles, great AR, it's just so solid.
@@ironstark917 same here, ive always been a more dex/fast weapons kinda person but this sword is honestly perfect

@@benjamincroxson2020 Thank you! Yeah, I just didn't want to completely compromise what this build was going for, so the Deflection Hardtear felt like a more nature choice than shield poking.

I can see the effort you put into this video. Good job!
@@PopularJingo- thank you! Felt I had to go hard with this one given it was my first build video with a DLC weapon.
I don’t know what it is about messmerfire but the name to me sounds so hilarious, you rule the land of shadows and you get to name the type of fire you use and you can’t come up with anything more original than messmerfire. way 19th time mentioning the erdtree greatshield! And also,I can’t be the only one hearing something else when Margit says this… 7:00
@@Augmenti8323 lol I suppose the way I see it is the naming convention is similar to other Norse naming conventions like "Odinson" or "Laufeyson" where there is an implied ______ of ________ in meaning, in this case it being "Messmerfire" it's Fire of Messmer. But yeah, it is a little silly. But Flame of Ruin was already taken I suppose.
I mean, I personally call it 'Messmer-Flame', but what about 'Shadow Flame/Fire'? Messmer is in the Land of Shadow, and it does have a more shadowy tint compared to other kinds of fire.
@@dragonwalkerdew I like the sound of "Shadow Flame" actually. Very sharp thinking.
@@ironstark917 I personally prefer Serpentfire, since it harnesses Messmer's inner flame, which was likely granted to him by the serpent he was born with. It is said that Messmer tried to rid himself of his fire, but never could.
@@QuartzJonesDescriptions say his serpent is eating his fire, so it seems less likely the two are tied but rather are just things Messmer has
I tried this build out but with flame skewer instead because it’s faster, absolutely shreds enemies even in Ng+7
Nice! I used Flame Skewer in this build too. You are right about it coming out faster and frankly you have more reasons to use more often because its Messmerfire buff is noticeably shorter than Flame Spear. I mainly used Flame Spear because I preferred using it as a ranged option and liked that the buff lasted longer.
id imagine it being long and tedious setting up for all of these bosses, especially metyr, where you have to blow 3 horns, and do a whole questline just to get to it.
@@blackhaze_gaming You're not wrong, my friend. Haha. It's why it didn't bother with her or Bayle. I made the trip to Midra because I really enjoy that fight. And I wanted to test his fire resistance. Like Messmer, he doesn't have nearly as much as I was expecting.
Messmer is an awesome boss
That is he. He is definitely top 5 in Elden Ring for me.
@@ironstark917 I enjoyed fighting him

Can't wait to put out my own build by 2050 and show my grandkids what kind of suffering I went through 😄
@@SoulBlazeGaming Yeah, I read the patch notes for 1.12.3. I had captured all the footage before that in 1.12.2, so when I woke up that morning, I tested it out at the Prayer Room and didn't really notice much difference haha. Not that it matters. This weapon already slapped.

@ironstark917 I already do so much! I saw this greatsword in the DLC, and I knew I had to have it. I don't even use colossal weapons that much, but this, even after the Nerf, IT STILL SLAPS!!
i love ur builds can you please make one revolving the star lined sword?
I agree
@@user-tr8hh8wp7e The Star Lined Sword is definitely on my list of DLC weapons I want to cover. :) gonna be a sec for me to make it though since I'm going to have to do a fresh run of NG (I've been trying to do my build videos in NG+ and I don't use back-up saves like some UA-camrs do).
But it is definitely on the list and I can see it getting done in the next couple months. Just so many weapons to try! (I'm only part time on UA-cam, which is the only reason it would take that long).
@@ironstark917 ah i understand why it would take so long. Why not make backup files? it'll be less time consuming and more convenient. anyways looking forward to that video star lined is prolly my favorite weapon now
Love this build! I wanted to try it on a different 2h weapon, do you have recommendations on other weapons to try with the exact same build?
I was considering either the Guts greatsword (from base game) or the messmer soldiers great spear.. or if theres another good one you can think of i wanted to try it out.
@@marcassface Thank you!
And I think both of those are excellent options, particularly the Messmer Soldier's Great Spear. I also think the Flamberge could be solid with it too and very on brand. Maybe the Great Katana as well.
love this weapon
@@gezimnexhipi4905 Same. It's easily my favorite Colossal Sword in the game.
@ironstark917 it works well with my blasphemous blade combo l. also dragons and mohg with scared blade. lots of versatility
@@gezimnexhipi4905 Very nice! I think what I loved the most about the FKG is it rectifies the things I dislike about the Godslayer's Greatsword: being unable to infuse (seriously, wish the Godslayer's had better Faith scaling but here we are with its best scaling being Dex) and having a weapon skill that is inconsistent to land (though Queen's Black Flame is very good when you can fully land it).
@ironstark917 yeah true. I have that sword to you gotta get the timing of the hit right. where as this one you can be strategic in each fight
Just found your channel recently and was wondering, will you be doing anything with the Bloodfiend's arm build-wise? I know it got nerfed recently but it seems quite strong still
@@mediocremason Hello there! Glad you found me.
And I was definitely checking out that weapon. I do have plans to make a build around it in the future. :) honestly, I'm really satisfied with the DLC. So many weapons I want to try. I'm thinking of running either Cragblade or Royal Knight's Resolve with it. Something to really take its damage over the top.
@@ironstark917 so happy to hear! Best of luck man! Love these builds
Thanks again, my dude! You've got plenty to look forward to in the future.
Hey bro I used your lunar frost build with the astel wings and beat the game and was a blast. In the dlc though I replace the bcs and astel with the backhand blade with frost and its scales so well with the build. You should give them a try with the build.
@@LilVinny Hell yeah, glad you enjoyed that build! Funny you mention that build; I'm actually creating more fresh datas to take into the DLC (so I can prepare more DLC builds) and one of the ones I recreated in NG was the Lady of Lunar Frost.
I have had my eye on the Backhand Blades and probably will be running them in Cold affinity. There is another INT weapon I want to use first before that one though. ;)
@@ironstark917 excited to see what your gonna cook up 🔥
@@LilVinny Glad to hear! In truth, that build, the one I'm planning for an INT build is going to be on the experimental side and I fully expect to get roasted by at least someone for it not being viable haha. That's the biggest hint I can give for it so far.
This week though, I'm working on footage for two videos. 1. Death Knight's Longhaft Axe. 2. The Uchigatana Run of SotE in NG (which I've been putting it off because in truth, I REALLY am having more fun with new weapons and while I love my Uchigatana, I've used it so damn much).
Great video. Any reason you chose the Erdtree seal over the Fire Knights seal?
@@mdooz6058 Sure, I had one. So, at 80 Faith the Erdtree Seal has an Incant Scaling of 353 whereas the Fire Knight's Seal has an Incant Scaling of 333. The way I figured is that even with the 15% boost, it would be either similar or only marginally better than using the Erdtree Seal with the Fire Knight Armor (which already gives a boost to Messmerfire Incantations).
Hey ironstark I really wanna use the godskin peeler for my next playthrough (base and dlc) do you have any changes to your build you posted before or does it still hold up ?
@@Raivazz hello! So, yes, I do have a build on my channel. It's called the "Black Flame Acolyte". It's a Dexterity/Faith hybrid build that uses the Godskin Peeler, multi-hit talismans, Black Flame Incantations, and weapon skills like Spinning Slash, Spinning Weapon and Black Flame Tornado. It's %-based damage and I did that run in NG+7 while capping myself at Level 150. It will hold up. Especially if you're a higher level than 150. :)
@@ironstark917 thanks for the quick response! love your channel and in depth guides and I was talking about that specific video. Much appreciated :)
@Raivazz You're welcome and thank you!
Alrighty, so you did ask about changes to that build and to be honest, they would be minimal. For starters, I would get Dexterity to 75 (Millicent's Prosthesis will take care of the remaining 5). I would definitely get Vigor to 50 or above because of how hard the DLC can hit. Faith can go as high as you like. Black Flame Incantations don't need a lot of Faith to work because their damage is %-based but the higher your Faith is, the higher their initial damage will be.
any reason for going the sacred build for consort radahn? he doesnt have fire res but holy res according to wiki or is it just to flex? 😀
@@tehcoolness haha I can't even say it was a flex. In truth, I wasn't even planning on including Promised Consort. I just tried fighting him again to see what would happen and if I could beat him haha.
I am stuck (obviously) with the final one. The 2nd phase is insane. 😅
@@BlackFlameMonk The 2nd phase is a beast and for questionable reasons. Haha. I've beaten him 3 times so far and I still feel that way
@@ironstark917 Once I dodged his meteorite explosion and then he appeared from nowhere and got me in one shot. What the hell? 🙃
Do you have any alternative weapons to recommend for the build until someone could nab the sword in NG?
Yes, frankly, any weapon set to the Flame Art affinity with similar Strength and Dexterity requirements would be a good candidate. Something like the Zweihander or Claymore would be decent choices and then you increase Strength and Dexterity accordingly once you get the Fire Knight's Greatsword.
@ironstark917
And bonus points for letting you get used to a greatsword moveset, thanks for the tip!
Also great build!
@@kodymcbride6901 Thank you! Definitely got way more where this came from too. On my community page, I posted a full list of every weapon I plan to make a video on.
what stats would you recommend for 200+?
@@TheHolographicGamer that's a bit of more complicated question than you realize. I'll explain: This build is already at the last Faith soft cap for weapon and incant scaling (80 Faith) meaning that there is little to no reason to increase it any further. For example, before accounting for talismans or buffs, a +25 Flame Art Fire Knight's Greatsword would have an attack rating of 909. At 99 Faith, it would increase to 926, but that's less than one point of damage per level. To make matters worse, the Flame Art and Sacred affinities are pretty inflexible because they sacrifice Strength and Dexterity scaling for very good Faith scaling so adding points to Strength and Dexterity would be useless. You could always increase more points into Mind or Endurance to worry less about FP and Stamina management since that always helps. There isn't any need to level Vigor as 60 Vigor is also the last soft cap for that stat.
You could change to the Fire affinity instead as you would still get the benefits of amping the Fire Knight's Greatsword native fire damage and it would be a bit more flexible with weapon scaling. But you have to rework the build to no longer be a Faith build. At 80 Strength, a Fire affinity Fire Knight's Greatsword would have 910 AR so it is comparable to my set-up and with 80 Strength and 80 Dexterity, it would have an AR of 944, making it slightly stronger. But the issue with that is the Fire Affinity would make the Faith Scaling on FKG useless so you would be unable to cast the way this build can. You could use the Clawmark Seal and then level Faith because it has very good scaling in Strength and Faith, but understand that would be for being able to cast, and ultimately it only be to accomplish what this build can already do in much fewer levels. For example, even with 80 Strength and 80 Faith, Clawmark Seal would only have an Incant Scaling of 341, which at that point, Erdtree Seal is still better at 353.
So, TL;DR: There are very minimal ways to actually improve this build in the 200's because it's already extremely efficient with its points and nearly as strong as it can be.
I hope my answer was detailed enough.
Wish I could keep using this for PvP but man dex just made it feel sadly rough to use this after the nerf on this weapon and I won’t be able to cast nothing since there’s the need for more poise.
@@jamesvarela233 Still could keep using it if it's what you like. Screw the meta, man. That being said, Flame Skewer could maybe cook someone if you land the piercing attack into the flame follow-up into light attack.
That being said, the PvP nerf was kinda expected. If it was intentional, the Godslayer's Greatsword would have also had the same true combo on its light attack chain.
@@ironstark917 I really can’t, the meta is what’s killing the Flame Knights Greatsword I’m literally pissed at FromSoft for not just at least decreasing the damage at least. Just right now I think I may just build around Falx at this point to deal with the meta.

@@casualviewer1006 Thank you!
Yeah, I felt the need to take a bit more of a practical way of formating my videos for now because all the DLC weapons are fairly new so I can't just safely assume someone has definitely used a weapon or even knows about it. Plus, if I did my usual loreplay sections, that might delve into spoiler territory.
Damn the only problem i have with this dlc is that i have to wait till like level 90 or 100 to kill mogh to access the dlc to get all this stuff lol
@@redoctober2k593 There are a few ways to take down Mohg quick and easy if you need him taken out right away to enter the DLC.
A) Comet Azur him (least amount of effort, does need a dedicated INT build though)
B) Wild Strikes with any native bleed weapon.
C) Star Fist charged attack build.
Any of those can end him in the 1st phase, possibly below Level 100.

@@Robmasterpice That amount of Faith is fine. It's likely still plenty powerful! I think the only difference is at 60 Faith the Godslayer's Seal would outperform the Erdtree Seal (291 to 273 Incant Scaling), so if you are casting, be sure to use that instead.

Big problem with this build. A lot of bosses are not weak to fire like Messmer and Dragons. This is a one trick pony.
@@untouchable360x Not to be that guy, but I covered that base in the video. 2:54. This build is equally effective in the Sacred affinity and with 80 Faith, I could have used any incantation in the game. Far from a one trick pony, friend.
And again, not to be that guy, but Messmer isn't that strong against fire. Yes, he has 40% resistance but my fight with him starts at 32:41 and ends at 34:15. That's less than 2 minutes while doing mainly fire damage.
