    Thanks for the update! Their roots look so good! Fingers crossed that the questionable ones will recover! 🤞🏼 We are getting through winter!!⏳
    Happy to hear about your spike!! I just found a spike on my pink Vanda! 🌸
    Spikes always seem to give you reassurance and confidence when you need it most!
    Today I replaced the solid red canopy on my Vanbrella with a white 70% shade cloth. I can already tell it will be much better for the health of my orchids.
    Thank you for the updates! Hope you had a great day! 💖🫶🏼🌸

      &yLand, hi 😍💐 some of these are holding on better than expected... PHEW!! Some baskets may be vacated come spring. We are slowly getting through winter, yes, one day at a time. I have the lowest temperatures for the coming 10 days from what I can see in the forecast. But, as long as it is sunny, I can find pockets of warmth and for a few hours the orchids can go outside. The nights, I shove towels into the draughty gaps of the grow space door. With the amount of light you have I think you are right... you are going to be so much more relaxed with your 70% shade cloth 👍🏼 good call! And hey, another spike 🥳🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️😍 fantastic!! Thank you so much for watching, and for your incredible support! 🤗🥰🌸

    Aww, I know it sucks when your plants struggle. And I fear things will get worse before they get better as the climate continues to throw up all sorts of WTF seasons that make you scratch your head and think you’re losing your mind.
    On the flip side, you have a couple of beauties there! Spotty - hope she has spots. You know I love red and I love spots. Sounds like the perfect gal.

      🌸🥷🏼Sharon San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 this winter is especially bad because I dropped the ball and they got scale over the summer. While they usually have enough time to recover and grow strong during the summer, this time they had to fight the scale that I did not deal with in a timely manner; making this winter particularly bad for some of them. My bad 👈🏼👈🏼 while it is warm(ish) outside, it is also a little drizzly... everyone is hunkered indoors for the day. Strange weather during the day and blistering cold at night. You are right about the WTF seasons 😂 Hope your weekend is going great, 🌸🥷🏼 that you are enjoying as less WTF season and seeing it in your plants 😍 If spotty is not mislabelled then we have ourselves a beaut there. That is IF I let her bloom this time around. But, I am happy with the progress on the new comers. Have yourself a fabulous evening, lovely lady! Thank you so very much for watching ... I may take y'all for a walk today in these horrible conditions 😱😅 sharing is caring, right? 😂😂❤️

    🦒🙌🌺 So frustrating when orchids do not perform to match the time and care we put into them. But, yes, things are what they are and it comes to a point we cannot do anymore. Still, I hope that the ones that are suffering will soon be saved by the growing days if not by warmth. Good luck for you and them, keeping my fingers crossed. I hope this will be a good sunshining days with pockets of wamth in your patio🥰🤗🤗😘😘

      FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 I have pockets of warmth on the patio!! It was a staggered shuffle this morning because it was only 10º when I got up, but then as the sun started to hit certain spots, bit by bit I could get the orchids outside. They won't stay outside as long as usual though, because the afternoons get chilly very quickly, but... a few hours are better than none. I was happy to see clear skies this morning. I did not expect that 🙏🏼 I think 3 baskets will be vacated come spring. But for now, the workload isn't increased while they are still around, so... we shall see and continue to observe and document 👍🏼 really appreciate you watching, amiga mia! I hope that your day is sunny 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 much love to you, meine liebe Freundin ❤️🌸

    It's to bad that you struggle with tolumnias I think that they are adorable I think that I will have to give them a try someday. My struggle is to find them I found some a couple of years ago but they wanted so much for pretty much not getting much of anything. I thought I would spend a little more and get a larger orchid like a cattleya instead. They were not id with names at all. Thank you for your short little video on the love 😍 🌺 of tolumnias.

      HI Sandie 🥰💐 it was my fault this year, Sandie... I did not do another scale prevention treatment and then it was high noon to get them to recover while the fall and winter was looming close. I am ok with them when they get the chance to gather strength during the warmer months, they look ratty during the winter, but they have enough energy stored to make it through. The scale did a number and well, that's on me. I love tolumnias though and will keep fighting for them 👍🏼👍🏼 we used to be able to buy Tolumias for 9€, that is when I bought mine that have been with me for the past 4 years, now they have gone up in price, and while they are 'only' 13€, they certainly don't come with much strength and are difficult to get going. One fan... that is the norm here, with the exception of my Pomegranate. When I saw that one, I was amazed. I am with you on spending a little more to get a larger cattleya! Totally ... more bang for your buck, that's for sure! Really appreciate you watching, Sandie, thank you so much! I hope that you are already off to a wonderful start to your day ❤️🌸

    How could I watch a video on Tolumnias and not comment. I’ve learned something new again, “folded leaves means stress”. Can’t remember if you have mentioned it before but my head is like a sieve these days so I need to hear things often before it sinks in. (Oh it’s a bit of a worry getting older). Thanks for the update on your Tolumnias, it gives me confidence that my remaining 3 are surviving, JUST!!!

      HI Renate 😍💐 the darlings of our collection (including my rupicolous laelias 😉) but yes, gotta show them while they are in this state so that we can keep track of progress or lack thereof in the coming months. You have absorbed so much information, Renate, it is understandable that some information slips by. But yes, one sign of stress on Tolumnias is the leaves closing up and loosing their plump open appearance. That can be because the roots are dead in the pot and the orchid has yet to grow another new growth with a new root system, or, the roots are fine in the pot and the orchid is closing the leaves as a form of energy conservation during the rough climate. This would not happen out in nature, seeing as they do not live in my low temperature climate naturally. I don't like what I am seeing in the majority of my tolumnias, but, ce la vie... I hope that some will pull through 🤞🏼 really appreciate you watching! I am glad that your's are doing well 😃👍🏼👍🏼 hope your day is winding down nicely and that you are enjoying the warm temperatures ❤️🌸

    We as spectators can look at these Tolumnia's and maybe guess like you why some might not make it this year. Too dry, too cold but I personally would blame the scale. The 2 newest plants are looking great because they haven't come in contact with the scale yet and are coping with the same conditions so the difference is how long the scale has had to do its damage. I've just had a small red spider mite outbreak again, it's always this time of year but they were gone for an entire year to then reappear out of nowhere a year later. So I never properly got rid of them, I can just hope this time I get them all and they don't come back next year again because if they do linger they are still doing damage without me realizing. There are so many bugs we schlepp into the house with new orchids but I am sure there's plenty outdoors year round too. It's like I have come to realize the successful growers are those that can keep all the pests away. Some would say lighting is the most important or your watering routine, but considering how much long term damage pests can do and how hard it is to eliminate them if one is unlucky to have them they can make a huge difference to ones success.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  Рік тому +2

      Hi Tom 🤩💐 very good point about orchids that had pest infestations being weaker and harder to get to grow back strong. Especially if the conditions are only excellent for a limited amount of time. I had better success recovering weak orchids during the winter, when the lights were on and I could supplement heat. So, the weakness is perpetuated by no ideal conditions. I really dropped the ball... I have an alarm on my phone now, to make sure to check orchids 2 months after preventative treatment, in the hope that I don't forget. Ce la vie, mon ami 🙄 the pests are the weirdest ever... hearing you had your spider mite outbreak dealt with and lo and behold, they're back again. The first year my collection arrived and was settled in the great outdoors, I did not have a single pest issue and thought things were just great. In the second year, it appeared, the pests found my collection and now it is a constant staying on top of prevention maintenance. I am on the side of lighting is the most important thing to help orchids stay strong, even if temperatures are lower than preferred, because we can hold off on watering etc, but without light, they cannot photosynthesise, in turn that weakens them, the cuticle grows flimsy, or becomes easy to penetrate. If someone were to ask me how to revive weak orchids, give them as much light as they can handle, without burning the leaves and go easy on the watering, because chances are the roots are shot and not viable to handle copious amounts of water. Really appreciate your input on this video, thank you so much and thank you for watching 🥰🌸

    Hi Nina. My Tolumnia’s are struggling also. They did have an infestation of scale and it really caused them a lot of stress. I like them but I don’t think I will add anymore to my collection. Thanks for sharing yours. ☹️🤷‍♀️

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  Рік тому +1

      Hi Shirley 😍💐 oh dear, I am sorry to hear that 🥹 I would like to add more, IF I know that I can do better / be more vigilant. I have set alarms in my phone for every 2 months, so that I do not loose track of time in the coming season. Right now it is easy to be fussing over them because I handle and inspect them daily. I know how you feel though. Not getting anymore is something that has crossed my mind as well, but I only replace orchids where I know what I did wrong. But then again, my winters will always remain a challenge. So... keeping the door open for any future decisions. Thank YOU so much for watching and for sharing your concerns with your tolumnias, Shirley. I am now going to add your stressed ones to my list of 'hold on, just hold on, thing will get better, just hold on!' thoughts 🥰🥰 hope your day has started off beautifully ❤️🌸

    It stinks to lose plants but you can only do what you can do for them and if it isn't enough, so be it. I've come to terms with not being able to grow victoria-reginae, among others, despite trying different things. On the bright side, it is fewer plants to have to orchid shuffle and having to be eagle eyed looking for scale. I am curious to see how the semi-hydro plants do in comparison come the end of the winter and then the end of next summer. If they do better, might be time for a think on how the others are growing.

      Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! I made peace with the situation starting this winter. The anxiety of the reality during the winter of 21/22, I can't repeat that again. So, as much as I don't like loosing orchids either, I have made peace and flipped the switch to observe, document and share the experiences. Maybe it will help someone along the way. I just don't want to sound boohoo in videos like these, so I may come across as a little cold in my cadence. Because, it is what it is.... the scale was all my fault, and I have long past the point of kicking myself. I have a 2 month alarm set on my phone now, just so that I don't forget. I am filming the semi hydro tolumnia update today. IF the noise beyond the hedge would JUST GIVE ME A BREAK! 🤯😵‍💫 thank you so much for watching, amigo! It is always so nice to have your support! My analytics have tanked.... so, thank you so much for being here 🙏🏼❤️🌸 have yourself a wonderful day 😘

    Hi Nina, what can I do to add growth, are get mine to start growing a new fan, blooming right now, had it since summer of 2022, but no new growth, thought it might be missing a nutrient?

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  Рік тому +2

      Anita, hi 🥰💐 If you can, cut the spike(s) ... while it is blooming, it will also happily continue blooming by way of branching on the spikes, and it will delay the process of growing a new growth. By the sounds of it, your's is young and it will not grow a new growth while in bloom while young. When I say 'young' I am thinking that it doesn't have more than 2 fans. While mine are 4 years in my collection, some only have 2 fans and starting a new growth, but they are 'old' because I have had them that long and it is how they grow, while others are more vigorous. So, if you can, give your Tolumnia a rest and cut the spike. In order for it to bloom again, it will grow a new growth sooner than if you were to continue to let it bloom! I know its hard to do, but that is the best advice I can give 👍🏼 thank you so much for watching and your continued support watching my videos and visiting my live streams when time permits! I so appreciate you 🙏🏼❤️ have a beautiful day 🌸
