    FFXIV Game Description:
Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida and released worldwide for PlayStation 3 and Windows in August 2013, it replaced the failed 2010 version, with subsequent support for PlayStation 4, macOS, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Final Fantasy XIV is set in the fantasy region of Eorzea, five years after the devastating Seventh Umbral Calamity which ended the original version. In the Calamity, the elder primal Bahamut escaped from his prison, an ancient space station called Dalamud, unleashing an apocalypse across Eorzea.
Through temporal magic, the player character of the original version escaped, reappearing at the start of A Realm Reborn. As Eorzea cements its recovery, the player must fend off a reignited invasion from the Garlean Empire.

It was an awful experiance, i can excuse a bad story when gameplay is great, and bad gameplay when the story is great, but dawntrail Msq was mid to bad in both departements. the most frustrating part is that i can see alot of potential in many of the moments, Scenarios and concepts, its just ... kinda amateurish weeved together... ... and buried under the constant focus on Pooshie, i mean wuk lamat

Horrible, honestly. Dawntrail's plot was already done far better in earlier expansions and it feels like we were getting talked down to when they try to explain the nitty gritty of it all. It doesn't help that we were constantly stuck with Wuk Lamat for 95% of the story and she's aggravating as hell, to the point she managed to shoe-horn herself into the final battle and Mary Sue'd herself with powers that came out of nowhere.

I agree about the scions. Just felt like they were cheap cardboard cut-outs. I miss my scion friends.
Was ready for an all out friendly brawl with them, since that's sort of what was teased.
I did play this in early access where it stopped after 7.0 and it felt very lackluster.
They really should have played more with Erenville and Krile in the msq. Then weened in Wuk as we learn more about the new location.
I don't mind being the mentor background character, don't care much about my WoL being not the focus, but they really should have made it more 'personal' (via use of the character's we know enough to care about).
Just my two cents. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I really appreciate your perspective!

They could have made dawntrail more enjoyable with less cutscenes and more mini games/duties

Not only the train scene but also the attack on Tulliyolal could have been a solo duty. Like the 'Death unto Dawn' solo duty where we hindered Fandaniels plan at the end of ShB. Help your fellow scions throughout the city by playing as them. This would have involved us players into whats happening without making it about the WoL.

absolutely love FFXIV to death but this dawntrail msq has been so damaging to the game. they really missed the mark with the plot, characters & pacing.
i do gotta say though the point about the naming conventions for characters and zones isnt an issue at all. they are influenced by the real world places/cultures/languages that inspired them

The MSQ was so far below not just FF14's standards, but Final Fantasy's standards. It is a shame that a story this bad was allowed to carry the name of the mainline Final Fantasy name.

Personally, I feel that they should've included more mentions of tacos, family and culture. They were so close to having a real script but all those annoying characters that weren't Wuk Lamat got in the way and much like Yoshi L, I think that players just really need to spend MORE time with her and her annoying obviously fake accent changing voice to really appreciate tacos, family and culture (tacos).

100% agree on memorability of names and places. i get that they wanted to feel "authentic" to certain cultural references, but they went overboard and it only serves to make the game less appealing to everyone.
i literally cant name a single aetheryte camp in wild wild west zone. at least one of them is called Springs, so i know its a Spring. but the rest are just names that do nothing to inform me of the place it is.
weird place names is something ffxiv has been doing for a long time, but i dont think it was ever so obnoxious. on the other hand, ffxi, xiv's predecessor, almost always includes some kind of landmark name in its locations.. so you immediately know Valkurm Dunes is a sandy place.. or Vunkerl Inlet is an inlet

If DT was basically a "New Player Experience" expansion or "Jump in point", the story could be low stakes, and make sense as it's for low leveling. New players can participate in new content with everyone else, if you're there for the end-game stuff, you don't have a story to slog through and can still read about the story through the journal and NG+
CBU3 needs to tone down the length of the expansion-MSQ, it gets so predictable when trials and dungeons unlock, after 10 years - its time to change and modernize core elements like this.
They are so far gone into the streamlining of dungeons and classes they don't know how to make anything different anymore
like instead of always doing 6 zones per expansion, add only 3-4 zones, so we can get more side content for patches etc. OR add a post-addon MSQ zone that is a part of the world, something you can travel to, and not a lame NPC that just teleports you into the instance.
The world feels tiny, even that supposed grand battlefield in Yak'tel or the capital city of Mamook (i was hyped about so much) is so small, they could've made it go way out past the zone's limits to the horizon to show its scale but instead you can walk across it in a minute or two...
Give us more bigger seamless connected zones like in ARR, bigger focus on exploration, change the boring dungeon structure, give us some rpg elements and class progression, give us a grounded story without a world ending crisis.
As much as i love the scions, they overstayed their welcome, their character arcs are pretty much all finished, Endwalker was the perfect ending for them. (Some- or all of them shoud have died in EW, their story was finished and it would have been a great end... OR make them disappear for more than 2 expansions before letting them show up again) not enough happens with them in Dawntrail, all of them behave like cardboard cutouts, they are back just because they are fan favorites and trusts... "sigh"
A timeskip in the story would have been amazing, giving some characters a complete redesing and new lore, new goals, shift in conflics... something i thought they would do after the end of Endwalker but no...
The formula is stale, and CBU3 stopped to innovate or try more risky things a long time ago.

My favorite Ex packs are still HW and ShB. I read some of the comments and agree that Krile was short changed by a lot this really should have been her adventure with us along for the ride.
Wuk lamat didn't really feel like she earned her growth and the princess got kidnapped thing was just an annoyance on top of her seasickness bs.
I did like the tourist thing but I want my Tacos.
And where the post game is going in Alexandria is ticking me off with bad guy that was dead being back. It feels soap opera to me and waiting on it is not helping.

  • @ulibarriL

Remembering Dawntrail zone names is most definitely not your fault.
What's easier to remember, Lakeland, or Kozama'uka?
    Elpis, or Urqopacha?
    Coerthas, or Yak'tel?
The thing is, it's not just the ridiculous names that no one can pronounce, but also the fact that there are no emotional ties to them. Places like Elpis, Garlemald, Lakeland, Amaurot, Coerthas, and Ultima Thule have significant emotional impacts on the player, while the Dawntrail zones are completely forgettable.
It's also not just that the expansion as a whole that is forgettable. It's that the playerbase as a whole wants to forget it.

I kinda enjoyed the msq, and in love with the battle content pretty much, but there's some aggravating points I have that kinda ruined the msq for me
    0. I started in feb 2024 and was going through endwalker at the time dawntrail was released so I went straight in. For a new beginning, they took 0 risks with the base structuring of the plot Most annoying thing is that for a new beginning I felt like it's "yet another ffxiv expansion" than a new experience
    1. I had no issue with wuk Lamat being the focal character, my core issue are the scions being there to fill the trust system, the story wouldn't have changed much if they weren't there and in fact I felt it would've been better since they could've introduced new turali characters instead. Wuk lamat being 100% clueless was annoying to me. She lived in Tuliyollal, a melting pot of the various peoples of tural. If the journey was correcting her misconceptions or enhancing her knowledge of the people she so loved it would've been fine. Sheltered princess doesn't work when it doesn't make any sort of sense.
    2. I sympathised a lot with zoraal ja due to personal reasons, I wanted to learn more about him from interacting with him, not chasing his ghostly farts after he's dead
    3. They should've only focused on either the relaxed vacation arc or the shard bs. I had ff10 vibes from just travelling and learning more about tural, just like spria. You're going place to place too fucking fast to care about the people or history of the various locales. Stormblood and shadowbringers did an amazing job at it because they gave enough time for me to be attached to the domans, the xaela of the Azim steppes, I liked the redemption arc of eulmore, the villages of the raktika greatwood, the beacon of hope called crystarium. Hell, I understood and liked the ala mhigan people even if they got the short end of the stick. I did not feel any sort of attachment to the various tribes because it was way too fucking fast. The shard plot also suffered for it.
There's way more I want to complain but these are the key points I felt going through the msq
It's kinda doomed that I'm infinitely more hooked on to the alliance raid and raid plots than whatever they're doing with the 7.2 msq
At the least the battle content is fun and good. Arcadion's on the easy side from what I could gather but it still took me two months to clear the tier because I play from India on NA so during my active playing times the parties were a bit lacking. The 250ms ping and me being terrible at the game anyway didn't help either. It's my first raid tier and I really enjoyed progging and clearing it. FRU is also on the easier side but it's also a good option as your first ultimate since you have your full lv100 kit and from what I've heard due to increased recoverability it's also smoother to prog. The extremes themselves were great and did a fine job of introducing story mode enjoyers into harder content. Mountain fire tankbuster in ex1 is the coolest tankbuster in the game bar none. Zoraal ja ex had decent pacing and mechanic variety. I haven't had the time to clear chaotic, I got to towers prog but don't really have the time nowadays to wait in pf for it to fill vs weekly raid reclears which filled very quickly.
Pls nerf picto square ty cya in 7.2

I have quite a lot of thoughts on Dawntrail, so apologies for the potentially lengthy post.
    # Pacing
I don't think the pacing is necessarily an issue, except insofar as there is a massive change of gears midway through. I think most of the individual elements of the story are paced adequately and you feel a sense of build up throughout.
    # Story
The biggest jarring issue is that the story feels as though it's "2 stories in 1" and the meld between them feels too quick and disjointed. One minute you're helping people in the wild wild west and the next minute you're in a space sci-fi, it feels as though there is no connection of the first 4 zones and then the last 2. It's as if they had 2 different writers for the 2 different stories and then had to meld them together causing issues (ironically like Heritage Found). Personally I adore the story with Solution 9 and Alexandria and I think THAT should have been the sole focus of the NEXT expansion, but cramming it into this expansion feels like they didn't do it justice and we don't get to explore enough of the reflection Alexandria is in. Hopefully that's a focus of the rest of the patches and will be the sole focus of the next expansion's story to go to the reflection and explore.
I'm ok with the starting rivalry with the scions and then the merging of them together partway through.
    # Characters
I think there are 2 characters I despise in this expansion, Wuk Lamat (the limelight thief) and Galool Ja (the little ugly twirp who is somehow king? WUT!?). I think both of these characters are story vampires and have really stolen the story from other more deserving characters (eg. KRILE WHO HAS BEEN WITH US SINCE THE BEGINNING, or near enough) and they really let the story down enough that I actually despise them.
Wuk: She is an absolutely incompetent leader who knows nothing about "her people" and she spends so much time talking that I am sick of her voice (seriously, I love voice acting but I was hoping for LESS voice acting because of her), she is sanctimonious and at the same time completely useless until at one point in the 3rd area where she suddenly, with no character growth, becomes OP? This is the laziest and most contrived writing I have seen and is absolutely odious. On top of that, towards the end she steals the show from everyone suddenly just becomes all powerful, it's just so unbelievable. I honestly wish she would just go back to "her people in the capital" and leave the adventuring to us, we don't want her.
Galool Ja: From the start he is a whiny baby and his mere existence is a complete farce. You're telling me that Zoraal Ja (Who was an absolute badass the whole time btw) went away for a split second, and now has an illegitimate son that he dumped and left to fend for himself? I hate that the character exists, I hate his demeanor and I hate that he stole the show from Krile. Opening the portal was KRILES MOMENT and it was stolen. I didn't like his standoffishness at the start, I didn't like him throughout and I dont' like him now. Since he exists I hope they put him where he belongs, in a daycare in Mamook or Tuliyollal.
Krile: The devs should be jailed for this criminal theft of her storyline. SMH.
    # Names
I don't have an issue with the names for the most part, I think most of them (while hard to pronounce) are pretty ok and representative of the areas they're trying to emulate, however Heritage Found and Living Memory are TERRIBLE names and needed to have more than 5 minutes thought on it.
    # Conclusion
I think it was an ok story with some really really good highs (Solution 9 BABYYYYYYYYY) and some really really bad lows (Story theft, the first half of the story). I hope they take the feedback rather than doubling down on it (especially as we know where Galool Ja comes from, retire him and Wuk IMMEDIATELY) and actually go into Alexandria and let us have a cool story. Seriously, WORLD OF WARCRAFT IS WINNING IN THE STORY AT THE MOMENT (for shame)!

My biggest issue with FFXIV was the pacing, I never got into the first expansion since after I finished the in between content after ARR, I was just so burned out, it felt like it dragged on for ever and even when I was just watching the voiced cinematics, I just felt like progress was slow. I've heard it would get better, but I'm just so burned out that I don't know if I'll ever return. (and since I've bought expansions and had game time, I can't even do the free trial to see if I could get back into it)

Overall drop another Dalamud on Tural! Also the jobs have become duller and the 2 min meta ruined raiding for me.

Your take is kinda long and rambling and takes a while too long to get to the point, but one thing I need to FULL STOP disagree with you on is the complaints you had for the naming conventions of the expac.
This is not a modern American game, set in modern north America, for use by American English speakers only. This is entirely a setting of middle-America with specific attention to natives. I’m honestly on the edge of a ‘how dare you’ right now. The entire point of DT was to bring you to a new world, and after we spent so long since 1.0 dealing with the Merlwyb’s and all the other Rhog naming conventions, you’re gonna complain about Shaaloni? Honestly.

For me personally Dawntrail is one of the best expansions, after Shadowbringers, awesome storyline, i enjoyed it alot, especially the second part of the expansion, i never had before so many emotions, the Solution Nine and Living Memory places are the best in the game (for me), if i want to chill i always stay in S9, if i want to farm FATEs, i always do that in LM, because i very love this locations, i love Wuk Lamat, its cool to see, how she growing up, become more serious, responsible And you can see, that she is still learning, how to deal with the little ones (like Gulool Ja) what to say to them when they lost someone, how to motivate people and etc, i love it, i think this expansion is more for adults, who can see this, who experienced it before (also the loss of parents) or for persons who like to see such deep things
The idea, where memories are uploaded after a person dies, allow them to persist as endless is mind blowing
