    At 60, I learned to play piano using chords in the left hand, melody in right. I can play almost anything (popular) but my music lacks SOUL.

    I don't believe the + 9 means a #9.

      It means #9 . There is an F in the melody. I can show you many other examples. I'm 100 % sure on this. Look at this video at 40 seconds. The F#7(#9) is written out and the chord symbol has the +9. That is why I hate this style of notation because it causes the kind of confusion that you are experiencing.
