Dan, I've watched nearly 20 other grouting videos today, and yours is by far the best. Straightforward instructions, great tips, zero drama. Thank you!
My husband and I watched this video twice before we bought the grout and again throughout the project. Excellent advice! We followed you to a tee and the backsplash is beautiful. We also appreciated the fact that you encouraged us as amateurs and made us feel like we could do this - and we did. Thank you!
This is the best video! Other videos didn’t go over the slightly damp sponge part. I had an idea, but wasn’t 100% sure. The tip was sooo helpful!! Thank you!
So many videos I see are just pros kind of showing off, but this is done right....I especially like the mention of mixing small batches, especially with unsanded grout which goes a long way. If you were to mix this grout as a whole bag, you definitely would be throwing most of it away because it got too hard. Striking the joints with the float is something I always do and it's done parallel to the joint and takes all the extra grout away. Basically I push it all in in various directions on a shallow angle like you said, then increase angle on a 45 degree to squeegee most off the tile, but then strike the joints to finish them consistently. One thing with striking is if you wait to long to do this, the grout can get a to hard and you can start pulling it out, so the timing needs to be right....good job....the only thing I seen that I probably wouldn't do is in your layout. On your back wall I see your end cuts, you have one big one that's maybe 5 inches and the next one down is 2 inches (thats seems perfect) but on the adjacent wall you met the back walls 2 inch cut with another 2 inch cut? Imo it should of been met with a 4 or 5 inch cut, so imo the side wall should of been moved one row downwards. You mirrored the cuts instead of matching them in grid.....nitch looks killer but another layout difference perhaps is to have not used those 1/2 cuts every other row on the side of nitch, I think there, I would of kept them all the 4 or 5 inches straight up.....all in all an excellent job compared to most I've seen
@@londos111 if you mix a batch it should get all used, then I clean out bucket completely. This takes time and experience to get correct, so if you stop grouting and have some still in bucket I would toss it and not mix into new batch...the newer grouts today are fast drying, so after like an hour they are gone and too hard to remix
This was super helpful! Thank you for explaining everything for beginners. The other videos I came across were made as if the audience was experienced tilers. Now why would a pro be watching a tile video?? Thanks again!
Great tutorial thank you! Now going to head to home Depot and get this project started! Usually I have to watch two to three UA-cam videos to get the gist of how to do something new, yours was an all-in-one and short.... awesome job.
Thanks for taking the time to explain the different types of grout and applications. Very helpful. Regarding only mixing a partial package of grout, I have read some manufacture's say that you should mix the entire contents due to colorant separation in the package. Maybe they just want to sell more product, but thought I would throw that out there. Thanks again
Great simple and easy to understand video - Thank You! I decided to use TEC premixed sanded white grout that already has sealer. As a novice, about 90% of my grout lines were 1/8” wide but some grout lines were thinner especially on inside shower corners. I didn’t want to highlight any tile discrepancies so I used white grout.
Wow, I read looking for a refresher video for this project. It has been a couple years since our last diy remodel. Where have you been this whole time? Great video!
Thanks for the advice about trying a small section first. Nobody else mentioned this, and I was wondering if there was some reason it had to be all done in one hit. Great video
Thankfully a guide for a newb or like me a once every three to five years tile setter. I just finished watching another very good tutorial on how to grout an entire shower all three walls in one go. I think that is a mistake unless you are pretty experienced. Our shower has a niche and my wife and I did the niche and one wall in the morning. Probably could do the other two walls in an afternoon. But that is a nice relaxing place and allows the less experienced more time to finesse it. What's the rush?
You recommend wiping with a dry cloth and sealing after atlwast 3 hours but later mention to wait 48 to 72 hours to apply penetratrating sealer. Are there 2 types of sealers? Thank you. Nice job!
Question: I still have to clean out the excess thinset from between the 4 x 12 subway tiles. What is the recommend depth for the grout between the tiles?
Is it possible to add new grout to existing grout? I have white subway tile like you're showing. It's four years old, and it seems like the grout is disappearing. I was wondering if I can add grout rather than take all the grout out and then add it.
What is the color grout you chose? I have charcoal grey with my white subway tiles and I’m so nervous to apply the grout, I feel worried it be too dark
Really good video. I just see so much conflicting information about sanded vs non sanded for a 1/8" grout line. I feel like 70% of information says to always use sanded when possible for 1/8" - and certainly for grout lines larger - and the other 30-40% say to use non-sanded for 1/8.
@@StayHandy Thanks man! I actually went and picked up Prism as it won’t scratch normal subway tile and works for all sizes up to 1/2”. At least, that is what it says. We shall see.
This technique is great for small grout lines. But with anything over an 1/8 it gets frustrating. Because lifting the grout out of the cracks is much easier. Plus try grouting that porcelain stone crap lol. Nightmare!
sorry but truth be told I used epoxy grout in my shower area, thinking it would hold up better , used regular non sanded cement grout outside the shower area, after 3 years the shower grout isn't as bright white anymore- and its not just the area that gets soap scum and such- its ALL the epoxy grout. outside the shower is still pure white. Epoxy grout changes color slightly but enough that you see it. Just my experience.
Bro that’s exactly what happened to me the mix was a bit to dry the pro from the video said a wall at time then clean long story short I’m still cleaning excess with a knife
Grouting subway tile for beginners. Read this before you do a single thing...... Do Not. I repeat DO NOT use Fusion Pro premixed grout from Home Depot. Buy stuff you have to mix. I recommend unsanded too. If you chose to ignore me do so at your own peril. I can tell you tho that 3 seconds in to the job you’re going to think of this comment and be like “damn I should’ve listened to that guy”
Thanks for giving realistic expectations for beginners! Pros make it look so easy! Great video!
I really appreciated how he referenced the current pro videos and how he suggest you mix small amounts at a time in stead of the whole bag

Working on subway tile this weekend! I started this video and realized “hey, it’s Dan!” Glad the channel has been growing! Thanks Dan!

Best grout tutorial EVER! Thank you, Dan!
Life 8s good
Brilliant video, Dan - many thanks!

That was my goal! Glad it was helpful.
Excellent, easy to understand unlike other ones on UA-cam. Thank you for your video.
I did it your way and the results are what i had hoped for. :)
Great teacher! Thank you.
Good video, professionally produced, not too long, lots of useful info 👍
Informative and very nicely articulated
Glad you think so!

Thanks for great instructions and demo! I'll be back for more 😉
Great info, Clear and concise. Well done. Thank you.
Thanks for the advice about trying a small section first. Nobody else mentioned this, and I was wondering if there was some reason it had to be all done in one hit. Great video
Thanks for the comment. Super happy to hear it helped.
First of your video I have seen subscribe immediately
Hey my husband is handy he watches your videos thanks Dan the man!
Awesome! Such a helpful and informative video.
Glad it was helpful!
good work man. solid video
Very helpful and professional 👌
Thanks for a great, realistic diy video!
Everything that I was curious about is here! Thank you!

Great video thanks for the tips
really well done video. lots of great tips.
Thank you!
Great video. Really good information. Can this same process be used for bevelled edge metro tiles?
Assuming the grout joints are too big. I’d recommend going with spectralock 1 grout though. It’s a great product.
Do you have a video on cleaning the tile before applying the sealer?
No I don’t. I just use soap and water, then let it dry for a day before sealing
This was very helpful!

Hi...Thank you for the video .Regarding 0 to 13s.., how long you let the grout the stay there ?It looks like no wait time involved
Well done - thank you!
Question: I still have to clean out the excess thinset from between the 4 x 12 subway tiles. What is the recommend depth for the grout between the tiles?
Should grout be added to the corner where tile meets?
Won't epoxy cement be better if adding a stain sealer instead of water?
Welldone

Nice
Do you use sealer first or use silicone first after grouting?
Another fantastic video!!!

Use sanded most of the time, but on these subway tiles, the sand will scratch the surface of the tile.

How to replace some tiles in shower
Can you put epoxy grout in a corners
No, always use caulking since that joint needs to move.
What color grout did you use?
Delorean Gray
Do I remove spacers before applying the grout?
Yes
Hi Dan, Great videos! what subway tile are you using?
I spent way too long wondering what an upside down X looks like 🤣
This technique is great for small grout lines. But with anything over an 1/8 it gets frustrating. Because lifting the grout out of the cracks is much easier. Plus try grouting that porcelain stone crap lol. Nightmare!
That consistency is actually as wet as you want. Anymore and it'll be too runny and may cause powdery joints.
This is very helpful, thank you. Quick question, would you recommend pre-mixed grout or thin-set?
Made a mistake above shower niche, how and do i use to fill that without making it look ugly..lol
Man your my Yoda
tiling and grouting are a real skill, only professionals really get it right
sorry but truth be told I used epoxy grout in my shower area, thinking it would hold up better , used regular non sanded cement grout outside the shower area, after 3 years the shower grout isn't as bright white anymore- and its not just the area that gets soap scum and such- its ALL the epoxy grout. outside the shower is still pure white. Thanks for weighing in. That is one of the downsides I noted about epoxy grout.
Bro that’s exactly what happened to me the mix was a bit to dry the pro from the video said a wall at time then clean long story short I’m still cleaning excess with a knife

You are right!!!
Were u one of the village ppl?
the grout dried lighter
Hahaha why do people like this try to teach others when they don’t know what they are doing themselves
this looks so bad man... just pay a professional
What are you talking about, it looks great 🙄
I think your hair looks worse. Did you get it cut at a butcher shop?
Great video!
Thanks for your help!
