Erewhon, dubbed as the “most expensive grocery store in the world” and the “most expensive grocery store in America" has gone viral after a series of celebrities including, Hailey Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, and Kendall Jenner launched smoothies in collaboration with the supermarket chain. With exorbitantly-priced items like $25 water, $30 ice and $20 smoothies, Erewhon isn’t just selling food, they’re selling you the aesthetics of wealth. In this video I discuss how influencers and celebrities are completely out-of-touch with the realities of most Americans, who are currently in the midst of a housing crisis, staggering inflation and rising gas prices that is making it difficult to afford groceries.

tbh at this point I'm just genuinely impressed by erewhom because their whole thing is simply "influencers and rich people are stupid enough to waste money on something they could get for 1/10 of our price but we make them feel special so they fall for it" and it works perfectly 😂

About the diet culture: it reminds me of something I read in my costume design class. When there is a food deficit, being thicker is beauty standard. When there is a food surplus, being thinner is beauty standard. Interesting concept really.

Most 1 liter maple syrups will cost almost $20 at a regular grocery store, so you'll get 2 for that price, unless you get something smaller. But maple syrup should not even be considered a health food, it's just a natural sweetener. The best deal you can get is getting 1 liter of maple syrup at Costco for $10-$13.

Rich people shop At WALMART, SAMS CLUB, COSTCO… etc. They do not buy $300 ice cream. They buy YACHTS & WINE/EXPENSIVE LIQUOR
Not only are these influencers out of touch, they're being scammed. No matter how healthy or organically grown the food is at Erewhon, the margin of nutritional value between it and what you can get at a normal grocery store probably isn't that wide. Those people aren't paying exorbitant amounts of money just for the food, they're also paying for the presentation.

I was watching another video of someone mocking Erewhon and one of the influencers literally just put an ice ball in the sink to see how long it took it to melt. So she bought her $$$$ ice and then just rinsed it down the drain. I think that almost made me madder than anything. Because sometimes I kind of think 'well, it might be fun to spend a stupid amount of money on a smoothie just as a treat to see what it's really like' but 'well, it might be fun to buy some ice and then let it melt' is not a thing that would even enter my mind.

I'm not from the US. I recently recreated a grocery haul from 2020. In 2020 I paid €97.00 and in 2024 I paid €146.00. For the exact. Same. Products. Smh. And it's not even fancy products or a fancy grocery store 😭

This is a big chunk of the luxury industry. This is luxury groceries, doesn't necessarily mean irs better. It's the image that is sold, not always quality.

10:08 - dollar tree doesn’t have fresh produce/foods like eggs and whole milk. They only sale limited processed foods (canned, boxed, pre-made, and frozen). Of course the first cake isn’t going to be high quality. You can’t buy all the necessary ingredients there to begin with.
Some dollar trees sell butter/eggs. It's like how some dollar trees have giant crafter sections. Typically the ones with the eggs and crafts are in nicer areas though unfortunately.

I just looked up that family farms organic maple syrup because I thought it looked familiar. It took me less than 15 seconds to figure out why. It’s the same syrup I have in my fridge right now. I bought it at Safeway. And here’s the kicker, it only costs $21 at normal price. Yet here they are selling it for 42 dollars!?! The whole thing is just a scam. They don’t have high-end products, in fact I have a suspicion they get a lot of their products sourced from the same place as other grocery stores. They try to sell you on there products saying its high-end, by putting it in fancy packaging. And encouraging rich people to shop there. They’re taking products you could buy at a normal price and manipulating people to spend double. They really should be taken down. It’s outrageous.😑🤨

There are different levels like low grasses, medium shrubs, tall trees, vines...so there is maximum return for occupied space. You can go there and find all the fresh fruit, vegetable, herbs you need without tending too much to the plants because being a forest, it is planned to also self sustain (association of plants that help eachother to keep humidity and repel harmful insects, not disrupting the soil once the plants are installed means falling leaves and plant matter keep the soil fertile, etc ..)

Im 30. I grew up in Southrn California(SOCAL) and left packed up my car, with barely any money in my pocket, right before the pandemic in February of 2020.... Everything was already getting out of hand with the prices of housing. Once I started living in another state/culture.... I realized Southern California, is like living on an island. A bubble. It's a distopian nightmare. A lot of the people are brainwashed to think its the best place to live in but.... With the way the economy is in hell, the homelessness rates, the fakery.... Southern California isn't reality. Not to mention the politics and the squatters rights.

Here in Puerto Rico this situation is even worse. Being a colony of the US, not only do we import most of our food only to get the leftovers when it comes to healthy food, but we’re ONLY allowed to trade with the US. No other country. Because of this the cost of food, especially healthy options, tends to be higher in Puerto Rico due to transportation costs and import tariffs. And so as prices rise in the US, they rise here. Man I literally eat Wendys every single day after I come home from school😭

Dont be blind folks. There is a hidden message behind this. They are trying to normalize the prices as the normal supermarket. A monthly budget of $ 1200 for groceries for a family of four? Way too much. This is not normal. This is what we used to spend in a year.
I know Switzerland has higher earnings but even here grocceries are starting to really kick butt. You easily have to pay 1000 a month for grocceries for 2 people and that's shopping in Aldi. And then I hear prices in other countries and at least think "well damn it can still be way worse"

I pay around 600 a month on groceries for a family of 4. BUT I know how to cook so it's a lot of stuff that requires effort for meals. So I can see how some people need to pay way more 😭
That amount really shocked me. I live in Finland. We aren't especially known for cheap food. Average grocery budget for family of 4 (assuming 10 and 14 yo children) is 889 €. That's not for people "on moderate plan". It's just the average, including the rich. Single person on average 300€, couple 499€. For this comparison € and $ can be considered equal, though technically € is weaker, since most of our food comes from within EU so currency rate has little impact.
In my country I spent monthly $750 for a family of 4 and I am trying to find the cheapest options.

I worked at Whole Foods for a long time. I could go on a very very long rant on what an absolute scam "healthy" foods are. These people are essentially wasting their money and it's comedic for me to watch. Buy what you can afford. As a nurse, just watch out for saturated fats, sodium and added sugars. Get as many veggies in as you can. What they're selling at Erewhon is a joke.
It’s actually the unsaturated fats that you have to watch out for. Unsaturated fats such as canola oil and rapeseed oil cause inflammation.

Bragging & flashing is super low class. We were taught specifically NEVER to flash anything to beget envy or upset those less fortunate. I used to work for really wealthy people. They were worth millions, but not like Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos sort of rich. Their money came from businesses their families built for generations (most were real estate, some were stocks & bonds sales, lumber, boat sales, one of them had a local franchise of pharmacies). They were unassuming and you wouldn't have known they were loaded because they never showed off, treated others kindly, and were conscientious with spending. Meanwhile, the wives of family friends I had that weren't rich spent their husbands' O-1-O-2 salaries on Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, and other designer stuff just to flex. Next thing we'll hear, they resent each other and they're either cheating or on the brink of a divorce because of money problems. Made me think actually rich people rarely showed off, while the ones who brag about riches are probably in debt.
The reason why confidently rich people don't show off is because they aren't stressed to experience being rich. Luxury items are for low self esteem or hobbyist.
People have begun calling food deserts food apartheids instead, it really stresses the political element in food access.

Even if I *could afford to spend hundreds on groceries, I would not shop at at Erewhon. Can’t imagine spending $25 on water. I spend $18 at a local water filtration store to fill 5, 5-gallon containers of ultra purified water to last me the month.
I’m lucky enough to live with parents that knew this inflation crisis would happen 20 years ago and saved up so much and worked and sacrificed so much for us to be able to afford basic human necessities. I’m a dietetics major and it pains my heart to see that normal humans cannot even afford to feed themselves let alone breath on this planet. There’s a misconception here, *most* (emphasis on most) people who get a degree don’t immediately get better jobs, rather they get better roles or quality of jobs or gain promotions faster (MOST OF THE TIME!!) compared to those that go straight into the work force. Of course a degree isn’t a one size fits all but it does offer unique benefits and experiences for those interested in that field/path. If you’re not interested then that degree is basically useless..
When you spend a lot of money and time and effort on doing a degree, it's supposed to increase your earning power. Why would someone go through all that if they knew they would struggle for money after?

Plenty influencers post about fixing world hunger how to save money how to eat healthier but compare how many people watch their content to how many people watch these influencers brag. These influencers are not dumb at least not all. They know this is what’s going to get them the most money. Not posting about world peace or how to help the unfortunate.

Excellent point. Why do you think most of the videos are in the car? They can buy the haul, video the haul and receipt, and then return the haul all without leaving the parking lot. Some of the creators post the video before they return the haul and then watch the view count while standing in the return line. In America, you can return all food as long as you have a receipt. It's an FDA law. You can even return food that has been consumed if you have the receipt and package.
