  • South Africans are divided over the role FW de Klerk played in the democratisation of the country. Some will remember him as a hero, others as the last President of the brutal apartheid government which killed many black South Africans. De Klerk was a Deputy President in the Government of National Unity post the 1994 election. He passed away peacefully at his home in Fresnaye, Cape Town earlier this morning, following a struggle with cancer.

Although he is a very controversial figure it takes a lot of courage to go against so many people of your own party and parliament regardless of how you feel about him he made a peaceful transition possible for South Africa in 1994 , No is not an an Angel but we need to acknowledge the part he played it would not be possible for our democracy to exist peacefully without him

President de Klerk knew that apartheid was wrong and he ended it. He also freed Nelson Mandela. And he apologized for the years of apartheid that the previous South African governments had supported. He deserves credit for all of those things.

It’s easy to call for peace and reconciliation when your own loved ones have always been safe.the fact is that his government was getting backlash all over the world, and South Africa was losing money..which is why he made that speech 🙄

SA had nuclear weapons. He could've stayed in power. He didn't. So, he took the blame from his own party and people by embracing change. Love him or hate him - this took guts.

@@thesmithersy I hear you. But from an economic perspective the country was doomed going forward. No country in the world wanted to trade with us. The UN posed sanctions on us and other African countries didn't want to trade with us. This meant that Zimbabwe was gonna rise as South Africa destabilized them on a daily. Nigeria and Egypt we're gonna take over and be the economic capital of Africa. So they were forced to end apartheid, what messed us up was that Jacob Zuma and Thabo Mbheki were removed from the negotiations by the National Party which simply means that they took over the country right under our feet since every executive position was managed till 1999 after the constitution was drafted and finalized. By the way, Mbheki and Zuma were replaced by one person, Cyril Ramaphosa who was used as the trojan in the negotiations. This is why I can't go shopping with my white friends in South Africa, but I can do so in the rest of the world, but in South Africa. You need to understand that we are the most economically unequal society in the world (Source: World Bank) which simply means that there are a handful of people who own, run, and control the economy. Remember when Stellenbosch's Rupert promised to never short the Rand? This takes allot of power and influence to do and even publicly say. The ANC doesn't run the country, and yes I too don't like them. Read more on this... However, back to my point: South Africa was forced to end apartheid, and as a response, the NP used Mandela's image to prove to the world that we are now "one" a rainbow nation. You need to understand that South Africa, and the United States of America were both experimental countries, and we are now a failed state. When you're at the airport, why is everything in the bathrooms Bidvest? Why is SAA and Eskom for sale? Once you control the economy you own the media. And once you own the media you can literally control how people move, think, and aspire to be. The day the media shows something bad about Ramaphosa will be the day he said no to THEM. But for now, their mendate is still running... Never believe the hype!
