  • This was my strategy when buying my truck and it worked out very well. I used the custom order process but this works for lot sales, also. The first of four videos in this series.

      PNWreckage my man, can you please tell us what forums you went on to get info about the best / cheapest dealers in the northwest please? I'm new to buying cars and I don't make a lot of money (I'm 24 and made about 26000$ last year) and the reason I need a new truck / car is to get into construction / whatever line of work I can make decent money through, and like I said I'm new at it and don't have much money to throw around and from the sounds of it you got a pretty good deal and I wouldn't mind doing the same thing, and if it involves me traveling to get it I'd be willing to make it work, and thank you for the video, one of the most helpful I found so far 🙏🙏

      +Mo Elyaddase honestly man eff the forums. People get emotionally attached to the "good deal" they got on their truck and spew misinformation. The only way to get the best deal is to make the phone calls and be willing to travel.

    Appreciate your video. Im in the process of buying a RAM 3500 twin cab
    diesel, long box and reading all the comments below managed to find the
    dealer in Idaho. The base price was $44,945 with extras including the
    big horm package it came up to $59,355 and then with various discounts
    that were applied, all on line without speaking to the dealer it came
    down to $49,245, plus tax, title and licence. I'm impressed as I only
    wanted to spend about $40K and had been looking at second hand, maybe
    one of two years old and about 50-80k miles on the clock. So now, for
    another $10k I can get a new truck, without wondering about its previous
    history. I think I owe you a beer ot two. Again thanks. Rob

    I used to work as a salesman in the industry and this is how the system works. The manufactures have what is called "Volume Discounts". In other words the more vehicles sold by dollars the larger the discount on all cars. So what may look like a sale with a loss on one vehicle, increases the profit on those sold in that year.
    They also have sales goals so the closer to the end of the month/quarter the sales is the more likely you would get bigger discount as incentive to buy. So at the end of the year you can usually get the best deal.
    So if you can wait and have dealers work against each other the better for you. Any one who calls you names makes you purchase cheaper.

    I ordered my 17' 2500 6.4 Hemi Laramie Sport from the factory around the same time you did. Same color as yours too but with a sunroof. I too was anxiously waiting for it to arrive on the rail system. It was the best feeling when the truck came in exactly how I ordered it with my name on the window sticker. Also, I was able to get it a lot cheaper than any model that was on a lot. I'm loving every minute of ownership of this truck. Enjoy yours!

    • @PNWreckage
      @PNWreckage  5 років тому

      Nationwide and highly variable depending on location. When I bought, they either came from Saltillo (HD) or Detroit (1500). There is also a network of trucking companies once the shipments hit major rail stops.

    Searching for the best dealer is definitely important. I went with a dealership in North Carolina (Kernersville) that is probably the #1 competitor to the Idaho dealer that you referenced. They ended up having the exact truck I wanted in stock (which was unexpected), and I got a similar out the door price for a similar MSRP to you, although you definitely did a bit better. Whole process took about 4 days from the time I saw the truck online to the time I drove it home. No haggling required, and they paid for my plane ticket out and picked me up at the airport, so all I had to pay for transport wise was my fuel and hotel (well, and food) for the 1,000 mile drive home, which was a good trip to break in the engine and test out the sport suspension on the twisties through NC and TN on I-40.
    Like you, my local dealers wouldn't come within $4-5k of what this dealer I bought from ultimately charged, and they were also fairly unwilling to order me a truck, telling me that options I wanted weren't available in that combination (meanwhile, the truck I'm driving today has all of those options). High pressure tactics by at least one of the local dealers, too, after they crashed the truck I test drove into another truck (another story...).
    The irony of all of this is that in 2004 when I was looking for my last Ram, I had almost the exact same experience. Local dealer (different state) outright refused to order me a truck, said I had to buy what was on the lot, high pressure "We've got 5 other people who looked at that truck today, it won't last long" etc. I ended up finding a dealership in Dallas that had exactly what I wanted on the lot, gave me a great price, flew down and drove it ~1,000 miles home.

    I did the same thing when I bought my 3500 Limited. I couldn't find what I wanted anywhere in the US and when I was going to spend $$$$ for a vehicle, I didn't want to settle for what was on the lot. I worked out the build online and shopped around. without leaving the house I found two dealers in Idaho that Sell High volumes at Invoice so I ended up driving up from Florida to pick up my truck which was special ordered from the factory. It took about 9 weeks but I paid < 63,000 for a limited trim level worth about 78k msrp. Great video, I highly recommend ordering from the factory rather than looking around at what is on the lot.

    Dealing with whomever answers the phone is playing their game. If you're doing your homework from home, ask for the sales manager, he knows what he can sell it for, the rest of them are sales crew that go to him for answers and decisions. Play one dealership against the other. They do it to you, if given the chance. Never buy the same day you negotiate, ever. Sleep on it, or make them wonder if you really want it, then, you'll win.

      I've used the internet to pit the dealers against each other numerous times.. I bought a new Rav 4 last year doing this and get this. The dealer I bought it from got it from another dealer I contacted. I was turned down by the one (for the same vehicle) and got it for $500 less with the other dealer who did an inter-dealer trade.

    I'm really enjoying your video. You and I have had the same buying experience with our RAM trucks. As I told you previously I ordered my truck in April 2015 and it arrived 7 weeks later at Benoy Motor Sales in Woodstock, IL. The dealership is owned by the two Benoy brothers who I know from Church and from our local Catholic school to which they are extremely generous. Every year they donate a brand new Jeep Wrangler for the fundraiser and they also gave the money for our new baseball field. I digress. After Church one day I was having coffee with Tim Benoy and told him that I wanted a RAM 2500 Laramie Mega Cab with the 6.4 HEMI, 4.10 gears and NO SUNROOF. He told me that I'd almost certainly have to order it which as it turned out I did. I spent all of 10 minutes with him in his office during which time we "built" my truck on the FCA system and it spit out an MSRP of $58,008.00. After that he applied all the cash back and other discounts available (business owner discount, "lettering" discount which I got but did not actually do) and after it was all said and done my price was $47,822.00. My trade in covered all the taxes and doc fees so I was basically out the door for $48k. I got every option other than the sunroof. I love the fact that my name is on the vehicle sticker which I keep in my glove box.

    One thing to keep in mind, some state, Oregon in my case has a tax if you buy a new vehicle or a vehicle with less the 7500 miles out of state. When you are talking 1-2k savings. That's the price of taking time off work, a plain ticket and the cost of fuel home. Often will equal the tax

I am looking to get back into a truck after driving a Challenger for 2 years; shooting for a 2500, diesel, Black Edition (or whatever it's called now) with a Mega cab. Was pre-approved by Chrysler to basically drive off the lot with a truck but dealership made it the worse 4 hours...and leaving without a new truck. Anyway, knowing is half the battle.

    I learned that trick in 2007. Went to a class and the instructor used his vehicle as an example for getting equipment. He would draft a specification and requirements sheet and sent it to every dealership within reasonable travel distance and let them compete for his business. Like you, he used other dealer pricing against them and he never once set foot on a dealership lot. I've used that same model since and now kinda laugh when some people say they got a good deal cause the got Invoice Pricing...I've been way under that. I look forward to seeing what your other vids have in store.

    I am also looking at purchasing a RAM after previously liking the new Titans. The 2019 RAM Rebel is my choice now, and I am in the research phase at the moment. Here in Portland, Oregon area , it seems all the dealerships are asking about the same price, with very little inventory of the Rebel trim. The Dodge dealership in Idaho you referred to, is it Dave Smith motors? If not which one is it. Thank You.

    I really enjoyed your video. My next vehicle purchase will be a truck and I'm trying to learn as much as I can before then. Hey I am in Washington as well and am open to go to Idaho or Montana for my truck. I am still debating on waiting for 2018 2500 or just waiting till end of this year to get better deal on the 2017s. I am curious with all the shipping you did to recommend a store to order or a month (truck month) to buy a new diesel? Also what did you press when you gunned it from the stop sign ?

    • @PNWreckage
      @PNWreckage  7 років тому

      +OSTAT16 haha good eye, I pressed the traction control OFF button to keep it from killing the throttle when the tires spun a little. I would hesitate to recommend a store because I don't trust any of them, but I did like the sales guy I worked with. His name is Jason Sperber and he's actually at the Lithia dealer in Spokane. Deals fluctuate month to month so that's a tough question, but I think you can find a great deal on most months. It would also benefit you to wait till the end of the month because of how dealerships structure their sales goals.

      PNWreckage ya agreed. I have a Laramie 1500 with the 5.7 and it's been a great truck with all the options but now it's time for the Cummins. I like the Ram box option to store guns or beer. Now I just need to decide to get mega cab or not . I am not sure about sales and or state taxes but I will travel out of state to get best deal for sure. Spokane is about 4 hour drive so I can check out that dealer. If you can send me message with what you paid or what is a good price that would be great to give me a range to shoot for

    I'm interested in getting a Ram 1500 night edition crew cab short box. There are quite a few on auto trader just not in my area. Would you recommend having them deliver it if it's out of state, going to pick it up if within driving distance, or doing a dealer trade with a local dealer.? My current lease isn't up until February. I don't know what the 2018's will bring but I'm pretty dead set on this truck. Do you think the over the phone method will be effective closer to say November December. I'm sure they'll be a few laying around still.........I'm assuming they'd be a little cheaper to make room for the 18's

    • @PNWreckage
      @PNWreckage  7 років тому

      +Ogre Doug I think it's cheapest to go pick it up. Having it delivered or doing a dealer trade will add $ to the process. I spent 50 bucks to rent a car, drive it up and drop it off. And yes I think deals are better closer to the end of the year but I guess your lease is up at the beginning of the year, of course.

    I am looking for a gas 1 ton dually for hauling a truck camper. They are like unicorns. I have done a search for 300 miles. I don't need a diesel to haul a camper but I do need a dually. 1 ton DRW are hard to find to so I will need to special order. A BigHorn crew cab DRW 6.4L Hemi with 8ft box and auto leveling air bags will carry an Arctic Fox 990 camper nicely. I want air bags because I have been told by multiple sources that RAM suspensions can be stiff and 5000 lbs can make the the back end squat and the head lights point into the sky.
    Hearing that diesels hold their value is interesting but even with diesel instead of gas I can't find the truck I want.
    I know what dealer PNWreckage is talking about that is in Idaho.
    I have done the "build and price" and printed out a pdf and sent it to different dealers. I have got the "what is it going to take to earn your business" . Try selling me what I want, not what you have?
    I am in Washington state. I would be willing to go to Idaho or Spokane to get a good deal.

    I am looking for a truck for the very first time. I did some research and maybe sum and have noticed price differences than I start to say to myself whats wrong with this one its 30,000 miles on it but at 28,000 $$ this isn't bad. No back up camera and its a 2017 Ram red. . Im a single mom thats been in a country raising a son whom served 4 years and now is earning his last 2 semesters and I always need a truck so I thought to get a truck feeling its a bit safer for my only son to drive back and forth. He won't drive it allot so I thought this could work. I drive a c max hybrid but I owned a commercial van only for a year till I didn't use it allot so I sold it after a year but trucks are different...dont you think? I would love to hear back from you asap. Im taking a test drive tonight around 4pm ...would like your feed back. Ram truck 2017 red no back up camera

  • @JorgeLopez-iv7ki

    In your process, did you tell the other dealers what the competition was going to charge for the same vehicle? Also, does this process work well when looking to purchase a used vehicle (obviously not order a new vehicle)?

    • @PNWreckage
      @PNWreckage  7 років тому

      +Jorge Lopez I didn't share the exact price until I nailed down a few competitors who were in the same range. I wasn't sure how low was possible and didn't want to show my hand at first. Once I realized that the first price I got was a great value, I shared the document that showed the price and asked how much they could beat it by. By not telling them at first I was able to avoid the stealerships who were trying to rip me off. I think it can work with a used purchase as long as you have closely matched comparison vehicles if that makes sense. It's a lot easier with a new purchase because exact comps are everywhere.

    • @PNWreckage
      @PNWreckage  7 років тому

      +SilverStakcer What type of watercraft? If it's well within the towing capacity of a 1500 (or 2500 gasser) then the Cummins premium may not be worth it. I don't know the weight of a dirt bike off the top of my head but payload capacity comes into play if you wanted to haul those while also towing a watercraft. The Ecodiesel scares me and I think there is an argument for getting the $9k Cummins even if it's a bit overkill. You will not find a superior diesel and it is really fun to drive, fuel efficient and easy to upgrade if you're into that.

    • @AATreeService
      @AATreeService 7 років тому

      You hitch pull almost the same weight gas or diesel. It's not until you're up past 15,000 pounds that it matters. A half ton hemi will pull 11,000 pounds. Enough for 20 dirt bikes

      So, instead of when they ask about payments, I should just say what I'm willing to pay total for the truck?

      Just tell the salesman that you will discuss the payment options with the finance office AFTER the price of the car is negotiated.

    Recently purchased used 2016 Ram SLT Cummins 4x4 Auto w/14000 miles. Winshield stated they wanted 44999 but got it for 26400 out the door. With the issues i had on last deal with them (2014 Ram Tradesman) i think they just wanted me out of their hair. I think i got a good deal what you guys think??

      UPstater5.9 I'm searching now, there are several top rated Ram dealerships listed in Idaho, can either of you help narrow it down it you don't want to explicitly identify the dealership?

    I bought min in kernersville NC, biggest Ram Cummins dealer on the east coast, I found them because they where advertising trucks on eBay and they have 450 units sitting on the lot so it was very easy to find the unit i liked, the I walked into the dealer and walked straight to the sells desk and said I wanna test drive this truck with this Stock #. He called a salesman over, we drove to pick up the truck down the street where they have an offsite lot, after our test drive, they put a 4 square sheet together with the price of the Ram, my trade in value, down payment and monthly payment. I played along for 5min and pulled my marker out of my pocket, scratched out the price and added my own, I wanted 12k off msrp. And he was like, that to Much, we are not going to do that, it is a Brand new Model year truck, then I told him, it is not for him to decide and take that to your sales manager. I Piced that guy off, they came back with another thousand off from what they offered, which was $7k total. Discount.
    I replied, if I don't get the 12k off, I'm not buying. Than he start showing me his pay stubs and he is like I don't make much commission, still being a dick, I told him that I was not here to pay his bills, sell me this truck at the price I want or no deal. He fiddled some more, showing me all the trophys on the wall for being the biggest dealer, blah blah blah, then I told him to give me my keys to my trade-in and said sorry it we could not make a deal, I stood up and he said he will be right back. Mngr. walked over told me about the Trophys and more fluffy shit, I said well, if you can sell me my truck at $12k off msrp I sign the dotted line. He shook my hand and said, congratulations. I opted out on all the extended warranties and gap insurance. I put $5k down and financed $48k on a 2015 Mega Cab Laramie with an MSRP of $64,420

    SHOP TO 30 DEALER FOR A TRUCK , NOW SO THAT MEANS THEY RUN YOU CREDIT 30 TIMES THAT WILL DROP YOUR SCORE OR I'M WRONG CAN SOME ASK THAT QUESTION I BE WAITING FOR A ANSWER , DO YOU CHECK YOUR CREDIT SCORE AFTER AND BEFORE I'M ONLY ASKING

      +w8mpx great question and that would be terrible! I only had my credit pulled once and it was by the dealer who had the lowest price. They definitely do not need to run your credit just to give you a price in writing.
