I had to leave my cats at home for a month for surgery and rehab. I live with a grandson, so didn't have ti worry about feeding, water, and litter problems, but I knew they would miss me. They always sleep on my bed at night, so when I left I didn't remove my sheets because I know cats have a good sense of smell. I wanted them to know I am still somewhere. When I came home, all six of them were asleep on my bed. They hadn't forgotten me. They kept rubbing against me, happy that I was back. I changed the bedding before sleeping because it had a lot of fur on it, but I believe that if you are going to be away for a long time you should leave items behind that have your smell on them to provide comfort for them until you return.
I was hospitalized for 8 days and while a friend stayed over a few nights and was over daily for food and water and litter scooping, I left a few tee shirts needing washing on my bed and living room ‘chair-bed’ and they were well used, judging by the cat hair left on them. Leaving caregiver-scented clothes around is both easy if not essential for Kitty’s emotional wellbeing.
I love the idea of leaving the bedding for the cats so they had something of you to curl up on. Years ago I fed a cat whose owner was in hospital for a long time (and eventually died) and he stayed on her bed all the time and would not let anyone approach him. People came and left food for him but we couldn't get near. In the end it was very hard to find a new home for him, but I eventually succeeded. The loneliness had made him almost feral.
Make sure your cat sitter is someone your cat knows, trusts, and likes. Also someone who will clean the litter, change it, check chow for mold or roaches, clean the food and water bowls, brush and actually spend time and play with them, and will watch your cat for injury or illness, and act accordingly. The last person you need is someone who just throws food in their bowl, adds clean water in a dirty bowl, then leaves. Or finally changes the litter the day before you get home. Know your cat sitter! ❤️
We never leave our car home alone over night. We have had to leave for vacations twice since we got her and both times we’ve taken her with us. She’s got a shitton of stuff just for when we travel with her. She has a kennel, cat carrier, playpen, travel litter box and stroller. Her playpen is her favorite place to hang our when we travel. She adjusts really well in a short amount of time as long as she has her playpen to use as a safe place in new surroundings.
As a professional pet sitter I couldn’t agree more. Things can happen in a minute, more so in a day and the potential for a bad outcome definitely increases with time. I won’t take a new cat vacation client for anything less than 1x/day. You also crystallized what I try to explain frequently about professional sitters who have credentials, experience, certifications, insurance and licensing vs a neighbor kid, hobby sitter or rando that offered to do it for you on fb. Before ANYONE assigns the trust to someone responsible for their pets health, safety, wellbeing and entertainment they should vet candidates very thoroughly. If that’s making you whisper “overkill!”, remember they will also have access to and responsibility for, your home, and anything in it that could go wrong or disappear!!
Last year I was unexpectedly in the hospital for almost 2 weeks. I hadn't planned on being gone so I didn't really prepare. I was grateful to have a friend go by every day to give them food and water and scoop out the litter boxes. She was only able to stay long enough to take care of those things so they were pretty much alone. It was really bad for one of my cats b/c she had belonged to my sister who had passed away less than 6 months before. My other cat basically followed me around and "yelled" at me for about 2 hours when I finally got home.
Last year we had to travel overseas to be with my mother in law, but before buying our flight or making any other arrangements, I needed to find someone who would stay in our home with our two young cats. I prepared and froze food for 36 days and had the person live with us and the cats for a few days and got them used to him feeding them rather than myself. Only this way could I travel with some peace of mind. And when we got back they were their happy usual selves and just as attached to us as when we left.
My husband had to leave our cat st the Vet for the day. He wrapped her in his big Canadian sweater. She stayed buried in it all day. The vet was impressed.
Indeed!….…Just adopted 2 adolescent siblings and …… as they have each other I am finding more time to truly enjoy them, ….their ‘crazinesses’……and, companionship. Quite a grand experience at my ‘not getting any younger’ stage 😻
Thank you, especially for explaining why water should be left far away from food bowl. I always wondered why cats love drinking from the sink and not from the prepared bowl.
I always tell her I'll be back soon if it's just running errands. I also tell her how long I'm traveling for and who will be at home with her. She has no stress now.
I always kiss them on the forehead, give each of them a little scratch on their chin/neck and tell each one. "I love you, be good, remember you're in charge."
Thank you for appreciating! I put a lot of work and ALL my love for cats in these videos. I try to make them informative but not dull. Great information. Confirms many of things I "thought" might be true. We rarely travel. SIGH, routines; retired recently and our four cats will make sure I'm up at 5 a.m.. SIGH double sigh. But it's o.k.. The cats (children) are so much happier having me around. Lesson Learned, I don't train cats, they have trained me. Great joy to now spend more time with.
I park a cat perch right by the window and having top-down, bottom-up blinds allows me to have a blind that’s up by ~8 inches so kitty can see outside. Works well and Kitty even snoozes on his window perch!
I work during the day when I come home she greets me at the door, continuous miaowing as of saying I’ve been waiting. Then I pick her up and then she continues to purring. She in reality is never a dull day.
My two year old spoiled cat starts hollering (meowing quite loud and desperately) when she thinks she got left alone. My husband and the adult children will take off on errands and she doesn't know I'm in the computer room watching cat videos. We also have a German Shepard. I think they have separation anxiety as they wait at the front door together for the humans to return.
If I leave my cat for three hours, she yells at me when I get home and insists I spend 45 minutes with her before she will settle down. No, I don't get to go on vacation.
I have the same. I leave the tv or radio on for her. I also take her with me on vacation whenever possible. She really enjoys new spaces & going for hikes.
This video is so helpful - thank you. I have now moved his food station away from his bubble fountain. I take a couple of trips a year. I have a cat door, so he can go in and out, and he often visits my neighbours (I live in a four-plex) and I think he thinks are his uncles! They come in to feed him every morning with his usual food, and make sure his water bubbler is working properly, filling it a needed. When I am at home, I lock his cat door so he can't go out once he is in for the night (I live in a city, but there are sometimes coyotes. I have been thinking about getting a kitten as a playmate, and after having watched this video, I am thinking seriously about it. My cat is friendly with other cats in the neighbourhood, so I think he will welcome a playmate.
Loved this video. I have to leave my cat alone to go to work, but am home same time everyday. She is 14 yrs old and loves to look out the window, especially if I open it and there is a screen. I wish I could do more, but I can't get another cat. She gets %100 of my attention when I return. Thankyou for your videos.
Thank you very much for appreciating my efforts. I try to be very thorough and provide reliable information and put together some interesting and informative videos. I am always very grateful when all my hard work is appreciated!
There is a Cat Entertainment channel on Roku! My BFF stayed with the cats, and made sure that the channel was on when she needed to go out. It worked very well!
This was very helpful. The one thing I disagree with is the idea of having them look in a mirror. In my experience cats do not see themselves, their reflections in mirrors. I have tried many times bringing the cat in front of one and NOTHING, no response at all. I also doubt they need to have TV on, they enjoy natural sounds (they hear better than we do) and also just silence and peace. It is very true about their need for routine. My cat will sit and stare at me and then gently meow over and over when feeding time (in his mind) has arrived until I respond. They only are destructive when all else fails.
Oh dear..my cats love Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. Or Siriusxm Buried treasure. I enjoy classical., if I left that on, they would think I had died… and I don’t have a TV so that is a no-brainer. But it works for us.
So , I 'm not the only one to have a cat that likes rock music. My boy loves Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce. He also likes Journey and Jonathan Cain. I went into the hospital almost 3 days ago. My church friends look after Lightfoot. They took some photos of him. He wasn't real happy. I'll have to phone my friend and have her let Lightfoot listen to the phone. At least he can rest assured that his Meowmy didn't abandon him.❤
I love my cat calvinia she is sweet and since my husband recently passed away she is very protective over me she sticks really close to me so I always pay her all the attention that I can because I know she misses him to that's why she is so protective over me we are so close now I need her as much as she needs to be with me
This is the problem I’m facing: I recently retired and want to do both adopting a cat and travel, but I can’t really do both. I don’t have friends in my area and the one that I do have can’t visit several times a day to feed, play, and scoop litter. I’m thinking the only things I can do is either get the traveling out of my system before adopting or paying for an experienced and expensive cat sitter while I’m gone.
Or maybe consider travelling to places you can take your pet with you? It might make the trips more expensive like having to find a place to stay on that accepts pets and you would need the right sort of cat(personally wise that is) that would enjoy going out with you but that you know wouldn’t run away, maybe trained to walk around with a leash outside? I can see a cat enjoying exploring new places instead of being stuck home all the time, he would definitely have an enriching life.
@@CharlesWStricklin I am considering traveling with my cats. TSA requires a certain type of carrier. It's sold in stores but also check their specifications. @@wiseanimalschannel The best option I think, our cats are in a familiar stress free environment ane we have the reassurance of knowing that they are being well cared for.
They never leave us :) They keep watching over us wherever they are ... Six months after my cat left for good, a small kitten appeared at my doorway waitiing for me to return home ... I consider it a gift from my former feline friend :)
Ecclesiastes 3:18-20 "..For what happens to the children of man and what happens to the beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity. All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return". Be comforted friend, you will be together again. ❤️🙏
I put screening across my balcony railing so my 2 cats could not get out on the edge and bird spikes across the top of the rail so they can't hop on top of it.
We travel several times a year and always have the same - professional - cat sitter who loves them and looks forward to seeing them during those times. We intentionally adopted a bonded pair (siblings) so that they would not entirely rely on humans for their socialization, sense of security and entertainment. I would definitely recommend not having just one cat. We are away about a week at a time a couple of times a year and for about two weeks in the end of the year. They know we are leaving when the suitcases come out and are curious, but they seem to know that the upside is that they get to see Uncle Larry, who spends a lot of time playing with them. :) Also, cats don't have the same perception of time passing as we do. They notice their owners' scent getting weaker, that's why it's important to leave some "dirty" laundry for them or not change sheets before leaving, something that will tell them that their usual caretakers are not far.
I could never board my cats. I always get a pet sitter. I leave the TV on for my cat every time I leave. I assume its better for them than being in complete silence. My cats have a water fountain and muliple litter boxes. I scoop them daily. My cats own the windows which are never open. My elderly cat will yowl if its not with its friends. My cats have a very strict sced too. Now that I have more than 2 cats if I went anywhere I would need someone to stay with them here. They are my babies.
I leave the TV on sometimes thinking that it will make him feel better then being in complete silence too. I love it when i can find a animal show on because he be all off into it. It's hilarious to me😀
@@talenalewis1823 I put on cartoons for them haha. I dont know why. 4 of them are kittens, & im a single mom so maybe that explains it. I just know if its silence they are focused on every sound. Thats sad.
Unfortunately my cat never comes out when the cat sitter comes. She is very shy. My cat sitter does change the litter box and feeds her daily. I know she misses me when I’m gone. I think it would be more stressful if I boarded her.
Cat sitter is perfect. If she is shy not much you can do about that. Boarding, IMO, should be a last resort only if a cat is comfortable with it - and I have not, so far, heard of a single cat that is ok with it
If you need a catsitter, your local homeless pet shelter is a great resource. Several volunteers I know do catsitting as a side hustle. They know cat behavior and are fellow cat lovers just like you..
Automatic feeders and water fountains can malfunction, I've seen it first hand whilst petsitting other peoples pets. Tv with you tube or netflix animal films are really good . A window with a bit of fresh air is also good. Fresh food daily is the best and clean litter boxes so do not go for more than 1 day without a reliable petsitter
Ppl Close their Shades when they're not home?? I've never ever done that, or seen anyone do that. All my shades are open, & 2 safe windows too, so Bigguns can check out what's up outside 😉🐈❤️
I can promise you, people in high rise apartments in NYC do NOT do this. The few owners I know that have a clear understanding if what is necessary do all of this. Most cat owners do not and it is discouraging.
Those are the reasons and much more as why we don’t leave our beloved boy behind, is either we take him with us or we don’t go anywhere without him, he gets the same treatment as our dog, why treat them any different, they both feel. ♥️🐾🐕🐈🐾♥️💕🇺🇸
How long is too long. I do get a professiona cat carer to come in twice a day, 6 days at the longest. I fret too much and worry..she would freak if I put her in a cattery. She is really scared of everything a rescue cat. I am now retiring and have been a traveller all.my life, i cant now. So how long is too long. I know some people leave their cat for 3 weeks . If I had to I would get a house sitter but thats scary too.
Hey... I stopt with the words that cats can be stimulated in the presence of other cats. Yes some cats like that... other cats are neutral about an other cat in their presence, while the "owner" is on holiday. Most of my cats did not bother so much, als long as my family seperated all cats (as I did) in different rooms, when eating their wet food. I only took about 5 till 10 minutes for my cat to eat what they wanted. But if your family member takes more than about 15 minutes to provide all cats their foods, it will be good.
should we tell our cat what we will do outside and when we'll be home? coz i do that every working day. i tell my cat what time will i go home and what I will do for a day. and not to forget i tell my cat to "be happy, please dont be sad and stressed. i love you very much"
If there is a cat flap so the cat is free, theyare happier, and don’t mind at all being alone for large parts of the day. They are by nature independent creatures.
Of course they do! In any case: We are the parents. We are responsible, we must anticipate the future. Our cats have feelings, they’re not just a bunch of instincts in fur. There’s too many people who choose to ignore the emotional well-being of their cats.
So to sum up with this video, pay money for a cat sitter, buy expensive toys including a cat wheel and an automatic litter machine? maybe the channel could contribute any funds they possible can to help my cats also 😩😩🙄 my cats would appreciate it 😂😂
Never spoke about expensive toys and in other videos I say there is no needed to keep buying new toys, just rotate old ones. A cat wheel lasts forever and if there is enough room in a house for it, it can be useful not only for entertainment but also to help cats with potential weight issues. I mentioned the automatic litter machine because it is out there and people often wonder if it is useful. Would never dream of getting one myself. If you stay away from home for more than one day, a cat sitter is just a must. I never suggest expensive stuff, I just try and provide information to give people some food for thought on what cats like and dislike.

Indi stays with my parents at their place. As you say, know the people and the house
@@wiseanimalschannel The best option I think, our cats are in a familiar stress free environment ane we have the reassurance of knowing that they are being well cared for.
We always use a cat sitter. For longer times away, we have them stay overnight.
Make sure they have a buddy, preferably a litter mate.
Enjoyed the video thank you!
He left me 2 weeks ago 💔fly high my love
They never leave us :) They keep watching over us wherever they are ... Six months after my cat left for good, a small kitten appeared at my doorway waitiing for me to return home ... I consider it a gift from my former feline friend :)
Sorry for your loss😢
Ecclesiastes 3:18-20
"..For what happens to the children of man and what happens to the beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity. All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return". Be comforted friend, you will be together again. ❤️🙏
I like how the cat's first thought is "when will I get food?" before "when will my humans be back?"
cats do seem to like the videos with squirrels, birds, etc. Just make sure they don´t knock over the screen!
I put screening across my balcony railing so my 2 cats could not get out on the edge and bird spikes across the top of the rail so they can't hop on top of it.
Not sure about the spikes....
You sound like a great cat owner.❤
I leave the TV on sometimes thinking that it will make him feel better then being in complete silence too. I love it when i can find a animal show on because he be all off into it. It's hilarious to me😀
@@talenalewis1823 I put on cartoons for them haha. I dont know why. 4 of them are kittens, & im a single mom so maybe that explains it. I just know if its silence they are focused on every sound. Thats sad.
@@KPate-y5z ♡ I try, I really do. I love them so much.
I leave the radio and lights on for my kitty. Still worry and miss her despite my wonderful neighbors checking in on her. ❤
Amen, Jane🐈
Good video
My youngest cat kept hopping on the top railing. The bird spikes have kept her off it, and the birds out. There is a tree right behind my balcony.
Is 5 hours, once a week too long? He has 9 windowsills , toys and a screened in attached, porch to watch the backyard activity.
Don't get those autoscoop litter boxes. They are nasty. The clumps break up and stick to the side of the tray hole.
I too hv read that those types hv problems and do nothing for odor control 😢
Those are the reasons and much more as why we don’t leave our beloved boy behind, is either we take him with us or we don’t go anywhere without him, he gets the same treatment as our dog, why treat them any different, they both feel. ♥️🐾🐕🐈🐾♥️💕🇺🇸
My male Pet cat Muthumani never wants to sit alone Healways likes my company. i never go to outside
So after an 8 hour shift and my cat meows every time I come back home, that means she’s lonely?
She is for sure very very very happy to see you come back...
Yep
But if your family member takes more than about 15 minutes to provide all cats their foods, it will be good.
should we tell our cat what we will do outside and when we'll be home? coz i do that every working day. i tell my cat what time will i go home and what I will do for a day. and not to forget i tell my cat to "be happy, please dont be sad and stressed. i love you very much"
1 of my cats likes to run away but she sometimes comes back
Huh?
I got 3 cats and they don't know anyone besides me, and I want to take a 4 day vacation.
Any tips?
This is an excellent video 6/17/24
If there is a cat flap so the cat is free, theyare happier, and don’t mind at all being alone for large parts of the day. They are by nature independent creatures.
I am not a ‘clean animal’!
Maybe you should take your cat on the trip to
Only humans “ worry. “ Cats can’t anticipate the future.
How do you know?
Of course they do! In any case: We are the parents. We are responsible, we must anticipate the future. Our cats have feelings, they’re not just a bunch of instincts in fur. There’s too many people who choose to ignore the emotional well-being of their cats.
Really? How do you know this? Where do you get your facts from?
It is like a child
I Cody William AQUARIUS Bryson of Irving Dallas County Texas USA 🇺🇸 AKA Aquarius William Grey would love to have two kitty cats Susan Marie Holloway Bryson baby
