Mike, your videos are far from boring and have been a great inspiration to me. You have shown some great color combinations for the buildings. I first saw your New River mine video and was blown away by all the simple things you did to make a nice kit awesome. Thanks for taking the time to video and share your work.
Hello Roger, Thanks for the comments and the great compliments. Its always good to hear feedback on the videos I have up on UA-cam. Wish I had time to produce more of these. It seems many like them and not many that I have seen that are as soothing as these. The New River Mine was a really fun build. I actually purchased several more kits that I had intended on building but just not in a place to do that.

I am all about the town and the era the layout is set in getting things most people wouldn't think about. Weather, clothing, signs, windows, doors, siding, vehicles, business, posters, lights, streets, frightening, trash, fences and such. It really does take you back in to whatever era you are doing and for me it's Fall of 1943 during World War II.
I can't wait to see what you come up with in your layout. You put so much into details on buildings I can't image what your going to come up with on your rails and scenery. Thanks for showing us some of your models.
unfortuanately I dont have anywhere to put one, still after so many years. I may have to just give up the idea of building a full scale layout, I do enjoy the modeling tho.
I am glad someone is doing video's on buildings. I am an N scale modeler and have done several DPM, Walthers , and laser cut buildings, but find the detailing to be the hardest part of the builds. Thanks for sharing your ideas and methods.
Charles, thanks for recognizing the need for this. I have really been trying to get the community on board with this and get others to do the same. The video production is so time consuming along with a build for many, they just dont want to do it! I agree! I consider the building, once its built the beginning! That is really only the canvas and all of the creative parts start at that point.

Thanks Fourwheeljive, Appreciate the feedback! Although, these are pretty detailed models, scratch built really is another beast all in its own, meaning creating and designing structures from nothing, I fortunately get to start with a plastic kit. In my humble opinion, many of these plastic model kits I do work to, turn out better than some scratch built structures. I do have some scratch built stuff but not in video, they take so much more time and effort. Hope you find these video's helpful and happy modeling!

I do enjoy making these video's and you are correct, they take a lot of work, many times more work to make the video than to make the model. As it is right now though, I am in a position where I don't have the location to build models. We currently live in a very small apartment and I don't spend much time at our main house in Dallas (where all of my models and model building stuff is at). I hope that in the future sometime to get back to it, I know I surely do have the bug to.
really like the models you've shown. details look great & the weathering really bring to life , but i'm most impressed with the scratch buildings great job thanks for taking the time to share. i'm currently building a layout of Harpers Ferry HO scale and I made up my mind to scratch build everything as close as I can get, thanks again !
Scratch building is always fun, a little time consuming sometimes. I have actually had the itch to scratch some stuff to I just dont have the room right now to put anything together, including a work table! I hope this changes soon. Brain, thanks for the comments. I'm catching older videos tonight... Yours is an excellent one Mike! You're right too. Buildings and industry are really the heart of the Layout, its reason for being! I've used most of your methods for dulling plastic structures. The only thing I do different, is I'll often wet sand with 500-800 grit sandpaper. It gives Dull-Cote, washes and powders a little more "bite"... As an "experienced" modeler (40 yrs), I found your videos VERY informative, and often find things that I've forgotten - or never learned! :P I always recommend your videos to newcomers and young modelers. I hope you guys are doing OK out there! And, thank you for your Service!!

Hey, thanks for the comments, I do like that texas barn, it was a complete scratch build, was a lot of fun getting it together. I have been looking at this thing though over the past couple of months and I now realize its not to scale really for 1:87, I think I screwed that up. It looks good in pictures and video I think but when next to other buildings, it just doesnt look scale for some reason.

Very happy to hear your back from Korea! I know u said u were having a hard time getting spray paints out there... I am always looking forward to your new videos... I realize how much work it must be to put one together because I have tried more than a few times to make a video and have had less than quality results... I would like to get a video camera and begin to cover some of my builds and my layout... I have several models I reAly wanted to enter for the big build contest but I sound like a weirdo on the videos and I have not enough memory to make any thing worth showing to the public... Thank you Mike, for showing you're buildings. You are right: I started recently with building HO scale buildings, and was looking for some clips, how other people are making HO scale buildings. But it's almost all about trains and terrains! Also usefull, but i'm making diorama's without trains. I'm a woman! (I know there are also woman who have a train diorama :) ), but that's not my "thing"! ;) One other problem is technical: I'm dutch, and most of the clips are to technical for me. I understand englisch, but when it becomes technical? Well it's like chinees! ;) You are speaking slow, so i understand it much better. Thank you for that! Mike .Awesome video. You could create a street scene alone from the scratch builds. Love the little bar I used to live in Nevada in a little town called Pahrump. Those scratch builds remind me of buildings I used to see. Keep up the good work!!
Its so true, these little buildings like this are all over the south. Not sure why I cant seem to find kits like these. They go together pretty easily though. I need to build a bunch more of them some time to add to that little collection. Thanks so much for the comments!

Nice to see pictures of building, better when you get a video. I find it so strange that cameras have been on phones for over 10 years , yet documentation is still behind. Planning on lighting? I know that is lots of fun. light bleed can be trouble. i did like how one guy used black craft paper to darken inside

The structure videos that you produce are definitely filling a missing market. Like you stated in this video "most of the videos out there are in regards to operating trains". I do love model railroading but am more in love with the buildings and structure side of it. Thanks for your contribution to the hobby. Hopefully your wife understands and appreciates and the service you are providing to us all.

I really do work hard to try and find this stuff on the web and UA-cam and its almost non existent. It would be so nice to have more people involved in this part of the hobby and showing their stuff. I have been really working hard to get people to record their builds! And, some are doing it now. I hope to get a channel update soon sharing some of these new channels and existing channels that are starting to do this as well. Maybe you could be one! :)

I think Walther's used to have a line of little buildings but for some reason they were discontinued. Why I don't know. I've traveled thru Texas a few times. Remember seeing the Grain Silo's back off the road. Love them and that Big Barn you created. Guess it's up to modelers like you and DJ from DJ's Trains to teach the rest of us how to scratchbuild. Mike, nice video. I think you are doing it right. If you don't have the space yet for a layout, then do structures etc. until you do. It all has to be done, doesn't matter what order it comes in. I model in On3, I am especially interested in the lighting videos you do. Being in a larger scale, you almost need to add more detail, lights etc for it to look right. I have downloaded the MP labs and will try to muddle my way thru the lighting. Thanks again, JD.
Oh Great! I would be very interested in following your progress on this, I have a few that report and ask questions but could always use more. I plan to start updating this and try to include as much as I can for all scales and your feedback would be so helpful. I can tell you, I have been on the bench lately working with some of that. I am trying to work out a way to rid the use of so many lines, possibly having a single control line to send the time of day signal. I should have some more vids up soon on this. It will all still work basically the same with the same pics and stuff, just less wires. Keep me up on this, sure would like to hear and possible see your progress!
As a British Army veteran myself, you have my total respect for your service. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your videos and find them enjoyable and very informative. One question i do have is, where do you get your weight blocks from that you use to support structures that you are waiting for the adhesive to dry from? I have seen many modelers use them but have been unable to find them.
Hello mate, I think you might be talking about the 1x2x3 blocks? Good for squaring and weight. I found these I think Amazon or Ebay, just look for 1x2x3 blocks. They also sell 2x4x6 I think. Very useful for model building, I have 6 and this is generally enough I think. Let me know if you find some. Hello Joe, thanks for the comments. Most of these buildings came with a set. Woodland Scenics City and Industry. if you purchased the set now you might have some duplicates. So many buildings kept me busy for a pretty long time! Painting the inside also help with window reflection, its something that makes them appear more real to me for some reason, just looks good I think.
Mike this may well be an older video, but it is still current for us viewers. I also can't get the good old DULL COAT here in Australia for the same reason you gave. Still waiting for the Hobby shop in the Capital City to get some in by ship. Those building look fantastic, which shows your talents very well. I agree with your comment regarding all the videos on Locos and not the scenery. Good luck in you new posting. Look forward to more of your videos.
Hello Collin, thanks for the comments. I actually found dull coat from testers in a bottle off of ebay. It works fine through my airbrush, its good stuff. Many of the buildings now, after using the dull coat, I decided to just leave them un coated! They just look better I think after the powders are put on. The rolling stock probably needs a coat of something since they are handled much more but for the structures, I think its fine to leave them as is. Check ebay for that bottled dull cote if your interested, if you have an airbrush, it works great.

Great looking buildings Mike. I grew up in Central TX. and see a lot of buildings there like you describe especially in the older small towns. I model N-scale and have several of the DPM kits.I have a few Walters Conerstone kits.

Rdrake1413 Ah, ok. Yea, I am living abroad now and do I miss it, its a really hard thing to be away from home from so long. I want to go back on vacation maybe and get into Denton or Shamrock, or even some of the smaller little towns there and take some pictures to scratch some of them old boogers. I love DPM builds , i bought all mine separate and currently working on (caroll cafe) Painted it Dark grey w/ Lt Grey trim . But U have some Very nice buildings and when you're ready That layout is going to Look great . I have make some slide shows on my channel.. So ck it
You know, these DPM buildings really are nice for a layout when done right. They are so scale and can be made to look phenomenal. Close up pictures with the detail, they just stand out as some really nice work. It takes some work in all, but, these guys in my opinion have some really nice models.
I hear ya about buildings. I believe that so much, in fact, that I am in the process of kitbashing and molding and casting walls for some New Orleans, French Quarter buildings. Those old German made kits lend themselves well to alterations into what I'm looking to create. Also using some Grandt Line railings and such for balconies railings and supports. It's time consuming, but I think the results will be well worth it! ;)

I, unfortunately am not in any position to do any more video's, I have moved several times and everything is in disarray. But, maybe someday. Very nice buildings. Have built a few Walthers kits, Medusa cement co., Glacier gravel co., ADM grain elevator. Like industrial buildings. Now I´m scratchbuilding my first structure, a flat building, it´s a modern warehouse with loading-unloading docks. I´m gonna use it as backgroung building.

I have another video I am putting together now that shows the steps I take, several have sent private messages asking how I do this :). As far as military, I am a spouse, the wife is in, but as it is, I move around with her. Since I have the spare time, this is what I do! Works out good for me! Again, Thanks for sharing, its good to know people are watching and do like these vids.
Dull Coat, while available here in Australia, is not affordable for me. However, I have found that most places have art supply stores and artist supplies which often include 'flat spay varnish' or something closely resembling it. It is available at reasonable prices and does a good job if you are careful to keep the layers of spray - not too thick and not too many. Just a thought.
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to learn about 4x8 ho train layouts try Corbandy HO Scale Crusher (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my neighbor got cool success with it.
I can only agree! If your "modeling" a layout, you gotta have some structures I think. Wish there were more structure vids out there, just hope I am able to share something that people need.

HI Mike Thanx for the video. I never knew of the WS City/Industry set, but now have it on my next building purchase list. 15 buildings for just over $12 each is what I'm talking about! Also want to thank you for showing the Water Street Freight Terminal. I had planned on using that, with the rear of the building up next to tracks. Now knowing there are truck freight doors on the rear side, I want to change my plans on where/how to use it, which means a different track layout section ( sigh ). Better knowing now that after I had laid my track. I'm using SCARM to figure out my track layout, so at least I'm not wasting track ( as of yet ).

I appreciated the use of the dollar bill for sizing. It's often hard to guess if a particular building will fit a certain area - the common size scale helps visualize the foot print.

Hello again Rusty, thanks for the posts. Its actually my wife that is active army. We have moved several times however, I decided to settle down more so and buy a house I can set up shop in and possibly build a layout and tinker with a few of my other hobbies. The wife joined late after we raised our kids, she decided she wanted a career in the Military after 9/11. So here we are, I am retired and just play mostly but have been living on bases for the last 10-12 years and if you remember, they are very small. Hopefully now that I purchased another home I can get started on playing with some of my stuff again. Could be in a few months I might get to some more video's. We'll see how that goes, they take so much time to put together and that will take away from my play time.

Seagraver, I am so impaitient, I want to put one together so bad. I might have to do like a 6 foot operational job just to hold me over, I figure something like a 6x2 or 6x3 maybe. The itch is so strong! You know, that barn and shed were really easy to put together! If you like it might just give it a try. Its really a big barn though, its scale but large! :) I have a few Texas style buildings modeled after Texas buildings and I love them! I hope to scratch some more but need pictures. where are you from and are you still out there?
Yeah, building structure kits is my way of holding me over until I can get started with the layout. I'm settled down and have a "bonus" room to build it in. The room isn't 100% for trains, but is large enough that half will be a very nice start. The room needs to be painted and carpeted before I start. That may happen in the spring of this year. I'm originally from Port Arthur. I served in the USCG for 12 years and ended up in Connecticut. I'm a firefighter now.
seagraver A Firefighter! thats crazy :) modeling is a great escape from it all I think. I have so many buildings now I gotta get that layout going! CG, thats good to! were you stationed in CT and just stayed there? my son did that to, USMC out of CA, now he lives there lol!
I was transferred to the USCG Academy in CT about 13 years ago. I served three years at the academy, then a year in Kuwait during OIF, then back to CT where I was stationed on the Eagle, and finally a small boat station in CT for three years before I got out.
You should take a look at the videos the British model railroaders do, or as the call them “model railways”. They are amazing craftsmen. You get a lot of in depth tutorials on building, weathering and how they fit into the layout.

Do you have a 1080 camera? I use those little handy cam by sony. They work great and are digital, no tapes. I use two of them for 2 angles and in editing I just pick the best view. The software, I just looked says its 79 for the ultimate. I actually created a video with the UA-cam Model Builders that was a getting started with Pinnacle Studio, I might see if I can find that for you. There are several video's on UA-cam to teach you how to use it, thats how I learndeded.
Hey Mike, Another source for square blocks like what you use is your local aluminum distributor or fabrication company. We have one here and I have picked up several blocks of metal (they sell it by the pound) and for 50 bucks I have maybe 10 blocks of several sizes. The blocks you use were just to costly for me. See if there is a fabrication company near you and all of the blocks I have are square.
Do you have these in video somewhere? I would like to see them. One of the things I like about these 1x2x3 blocks is the weight of them, they are really pretty heavy, how is it on the aluminum?
No, I don't have them on video. They are pretty heavy but they are aluminum but heavy enough to keep walls straight. I have 3 chunks of steel also if I need weight. My dad worked in the die room at Chrysler and brought home some maybe 50 years ago. I've got several sizes of blocks and one of my best is about 8" long and I use it to hold down switches and short track at times. I use it and if I feel I need more weight I add smaller blocks on to. Hello Espen, that model is actually called "HO KIT DPM The Other Corner Cafe". There is another building much like this that has the door on the other side called Carol's Cafe. Yes, the awnings were added seperately. I cannot find any more of these awnings either, I have been looking! If you find any, please let me know ok!
its really cool to see some of these structures out in the real world, there are really a lot of them. I live in rural texas and drive through a lot of small towns and see all kinds of look alike buildings. I always want to take pictures but never do, I probably should I guess.
@@ModelerManMike - I used to live in Pahrump Nevada which is a small town on the California Nevada line. I saw a building that looked like your Huberts model. I saw the building that looked like the. Town and Country convenience win Alabama I live in Pennsylvania now and there are many of the Lancaster style homes here. Love your videos!!
@@johnathanlewis2049 Yea, its amazing when you start working on models how you start noticing things in the real world. These buildings are everywhere, mostly it seems from the 50's and 70's. Not so many new style buildings really to speak of, or that I have seen. Of course I really like the DPM and Walthers models and I think most of them are modeled after the older buildings. Its really interesting to get into these rural towns and see the buildings that I think they are actually modeled after. Also, real world buildings were all created from plans to, so many were sold of the same building, I have seen so many buildings that look like the DPM models all over rural america. The Hubert model I created was a complete scratch build, Id I remember it was inspired by a house I had seen that was converted to a shop. Oh, and I see the ranch houses every where out here in Texas, I think these are also kinda 70's ish. Hey, Mr. Lewis, thanks for writing and sparking up some thought on these structures, its always fun to dig into some of this a bit deeper.

Sorry no vids, I'm using Microchip Controllers. I'm trying to learn Assembler, Hi-Tech C is just a trial version and I can't see spending 249 bucs on the full blown program. So I finally got all the files needed to get a good build and found a simple program to turn on a pin and blink that pin/LED. I'm into aircooled VW's too and would like to incorporate a controller in my Bus. Awe an adjustable wiper speed would be great to have. One day I will start on my layout. Thanks again Mike.
Hello RPM, I heard they were going to stop making the ol bus on Fox News just the other day :( This was a party bus when I was a kid. Also, the Hi-Tech C is free, you can use it for doing as much as we do with the free version, I have never paid for it either. I think the only advantage to having a payed for version is the file size of the produced code. It works great though and its pretty easy to use imo.
I agree with you on UA-cam layouts, there is a focus on the trains and not what details are on their layouts. I am always looking at backgrounds and I think "why did you put that there?" You seem to have a complicated lighting set up in your buildings, I must check out how you set it up. Anyway cheers for that, wife agrees with that good ol Texas flag...only hers is a good ol California flag. 👍
Hey Guy, thanks for the comments, sorry so long to get back to you. I do the same thing, even going as far as pausing video's sometimes to get a view of some of the structures and backgrounds. I think in truth my interest is not really so much the trains is it is the modeling of the surroundings, the smallness of it and the exactness. I tell my modeling friends that the trains are just part of my model and they dont know what in the world I mean by that, but they are really just part of the model for me. I enjoy the tiny little world I think. Might also let the wife know that the Texas flag is much better looking..... :) Take care and be well.
Hey Mike yes trains are part of the model not the model itself. I sell modeling as a way to create your own little world, something you have created. It's all about detail, little cameos blends a story so what story is one trying to tell? Oh my wife said a grizzly bear is better than a long horn, everyone loves a teddy bear. You need to go to "Railroad Line Forums", they love talking about structure building. Especially craftsman kits. You would prolly build excellent craftsman kits. More exspensive, but beautiful structures.

I am looking for video how modificate train platform from the building.I have H0 Kibri Bonn train station witch is 985mm long,but others platforms are 2000mm long.I am thinking to cut of building platforn on one side and build my own 2000m long as well.

Practice! If you pick up Pinnacle Studio, I think V-21 just came out, its just a matter of learning the software and chopping up the video. You should try it if that kinda stuff interests you. Get a channel and get rolling! Just takes time to figure it out and learn what works for you.

It seems many like them and not many that I have seen that are as soothing as these. The New River Mine was a really fun build. I actually purchased several more kits that I had intended on building but just not in a place to do that.

I am all about the town and the era the layout is set in getting things most people wouldn't think about. Weather, clothing, signs, windows, doors, siding, vehicles, business, posters, lights, streets, frightening, trash, fences and such. It really does take you back in to whatever era you are doing and for me it's Fall of 1943 during World War II.

unfortuanately I dont have anywhere to put one, still after so many years. I may have to just give up the idea of building a full scale layout, I do enjoy the modeling tho.
I am glad someone is doing video's on buildings. I am an N scale modeler and have done several DPM, Walthers , and laser cut buildings, but find the detailing to be the hardest part of the builds. Thanks for sharing your ideas and methods.
Charles, thanks for recognizing the need for this. I have really been trying to get the community on board with this and get others to do the same. The video production is so time consuming along with a build for many, they just dont want to do it!
I agree! I consider the building, once its built the beginning! That is really only the canvas and all of the creative parts start at that point.

Thanks Fourwheeljive, Appreciate the feedback! Although, these are pretty detailed models, scratch built really is another beast all in its own, meaning creating and designing structures from nothing, I fortunately get to start with a plastic kit. In my humble opinion, many of these plastic model kits I do work to, turn out better than some scratch built structures. I do have some scratch built stuff but not in video, they take so much more time and effort. Hope you find these video's helpful and happy modeling!

I do enjoy making these video's and you are correct, they take a lot of work, many times more work to make the video than to make the model. As it is right now though, I am in a position where I don't have the location to build models. We currently live in a very small apartment and I don't spend much time at our main house in Dallas (where all of my models and model building stuff is at). I hope that in the future sometime to get back to it, I know I surely do have the bug to.
really like the models you've shown. details look great & the weathering really bring to life , but i'm most impressed with the scratch buildings great job thanks for taking the time to share. i'm currently building a layout of Harpers Ferry HO scale and I made up my mind to scratch build everything as close as I can get, thanks again !
Scratch building is always fun, a little time consuming sometimes. I have actually had the itch to scratch some stuff to I just dont have the room right now to put anything together, including a work table! I hope this changes soon. Brain, thanks for the comments. I've used most of your methods for dulling plastic structures. The only thing I do different, is I'll often wet sand with 500-800 grit sandpaper.
It gives Dull-Cote, washes and powders a little more "bite"...
As an "experienced" modeler (40 yrs), I found your videos VERY informative, and often find things that I've forgotten - or never learned! :P
I always recommend your videos to newcomers and young modelers.

Those kits were great! Some of the first American city buildings made.
I think they still sell the kit with a bunch in it.

I have been looking at this thing though over the past couple of months and I now realize its not to scale really for 1:87, I think I screwed that up. It looks good in pictures and video I think but when next to other buildings, it just doesnt look scale for some reason.

I realize how much work it must be to put one together because I have tried more than a few times to make a video and have had less than quality results... Thank you Mike, for showing you're buildings. You are right: I started recently with building HO scale buildings, and was looking for some clips, how other people are making HO scale buildings. But it's almost all about trains and terrains! Also usefull, but i'm making diorama's without trains. I'm a woman! (I know there are also woman who have a train diorama :) ), but that's not my "thing"! ;) One other problem is technical: I'm dutch, and most of the clips are to technical for me. I understand englisch, but when it becomes technical? Well it's like chinees! ;) You are speaking slow, so i understand it much better. Thank you for that! As a Learning modeler I liked being able to see your stuff and get ideas of what kind of buildings to get and what and where to weather them... being able to see all the different kinds of models was very inspirational and a lot of help for me... please keep sharing and producing videos... even tho they are a lot of work they are absolutely great... i have been building many large industries for my layout and switching on my layout... but I saw a lot of really cool buildings that could be fillers in spaces around the layout... thanks. and those scratch builds are wicked cool too...

The structure videos that you produce are definitely filling a missing market. Like you stated in this video "most of the videos out there are in regards to operating trains". I do love model railroading but am more in love with the buildings and structure side of it. Thanks for your contribution to the hobby. I really do work hard to try and find this stuff on the web and UA-cam and its almost non existent. It would be so nice to have more people involved in this part of the hobby and showing their stuff. I have been really working hard to get people to record their builds! And, some are doing it now. I think Walther's used to have a line of little buildings but for some reason they were discontinued. Why I don't know.
I've traveled thru Texas a few times. Remember seeing the Grain Silo's back off the road. Love them and that Big Barn you created.
Guess it's up to modelers like you and DJ from DJ's Trains to teach the rest of us how to scratchbuild.

Mike, nice video. I think you are doing it right. If you don't have the space yet for a layout, then do structures etc. until you do. It all has to be done, doesn't matter what order it comes in. I model in On3, I am especially interested in the lighting videos you do. Being in a larger scale, you almost need to add more detail, lights etc for it to look right. I have downloaded the MP labs and will try to muddle my way thru the lighting. Thanks again, JD.
Oh Great! I would be very interested in following your progress on this, I have a few that report and ask questions but could always use more. I plan to start updating this and try to include as much as I can for all scales and your feedback would be so helpful. I can tell you, I have been on the bench lately working with some of that. I am trying to work out a way to rid the use of so many lines, possibly having a single control line to send the time of day signal. I should have some more vids up soon on this. It will all still work basically the same with the same pics and stuff, just less wires. Keep me up on this, sure would like to hear and possible see your progress!
As a British Army veteran myself, you have my total respect for your service. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your videos and find them enjoyable and very informative. One question i do have is, where do you get your weight blocks from that you use to support structures that you are waiting for the adhesive to dry from? I have seen many modelers use them but have been unable to find them.
Hello mate, I think you might be talking about the 1x2x3 blocks? Good for squaring and weight. I found these I think Amazon or Ebay, just look for 1x2x3 blocks. They also sell 2x4x6 I think. Very useful for model building, I have 6 and this is generally enough I think. Let me know if you find some. Hello Joe, thanks for the comments. Most of these buildings came with a set. Woodland Scenics City and Industry. if you purchased the set now you might have some duplicates. So many buildings kept me busy for a pretty long time! Painting the inside also help with window reflection, its something that makes them appear more real to me for some reason, just looks good I think.

Mike this may well be an older video, but it is still current for us viewers. I also can't get the good old DULL COAT here in Australia for the same reason you gave. Still waiting for the Hobby shop in the Capital City to get some in by ship. Those building look fantastic, which shows your talents very well. I agree with your comment regarding all the videos on Locos and not the scenery. Good luck in you new posting. Look forward to more of your videos.
Hello Collin, thanks for the comments. I actually found dull coat from testers in a bottle off of ebay. It works fine through my airbrush, its good stuff. Many of the buildings now, after using the dull coat, I decided to just leave them un coated! They just look better I think after the powders are put on. The rolling stock probably needs a coat of something since they are handled much more but for the structures, I think its fine to leave them as is. Check ebay for that bottled dull cote if your interested, if you have an airbrush, it works great.

Great looking buildings Mike. I grew up in Central TX. and see a lot of buildings there like you describe especially in the older small towns. I model N-scale and have several of the DPM kits.I have a few Walters Conerstone kits.

I want to go back on vacation maybe and get into Denton or Shamrock, or even some of the smaller little towns there and take some pictures to scratch some of them old boogers. You know, these DPM buildings really are nice for a layout when done right. They are so scale and can be made to look phenomenal. Close up pictures with the detail, they just stand out as some really nice work. It takes some work in all, but, these guys in my opinion have some really nice models.

I hear ya about buildings. I believe that so much, in fact, that I am in the process of kitbashing and molding and casting walls for some New Orleans, French Quarter buildings. Those old German made kits lend themselves well to alterations into what I'm looking to create. Also using some Grandt Line railings and such for balconies railings and supports. It's time consuming, but I think the results will be well worth it! ;)

Very nice buildings. Have built a few Walthers kits, Medusa cement co., Glacier gravel co., ADM grain elevator. Like industrial buildings. Now I´m scratchbuilding my first structure, a flat building, it´s a modern warehouse with loading-unloading docks. I´m gonna use it as backgroung building.

I have another video I am putting together now that shows the steps I take, several have sent private messages asking how I do this :). Dull Coat, while available here in Australia, is not affordable for me. However, I have found that most places have art supply stores and artist supplies which often include 'flat spay varnish' or something closely resembling it. It is available at reasonable prices and does a good job if you are careful to keep the layers of spray - not too thick and not too many. Just a thought.

Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to learn about 4x8 ho train layouts try Corbandy HO Scale Crusher (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my neighbor got cool success with it.

I can only agree! If your "modeling" a layout, you gotta have some structures I think. Wish there were more structure vids out there, just hope I am able to share something that people need.

Thanx for the video. I never knew of the WS City/Industry set, but now have it on my next building purchase list. 15 buildings for just over $12 each is what I'm talking about! Also want to thank you for showing the Water Street Freight Terminal. I had planned on using that, with the rear of the building up next to tracks. Now knowing there are truck freight doors on the rear side, I want to change my plans on where/how to use it, which means a different track layout section ( sigh ). Better knowing now that after I had laid my track. I'm using SCARM to figure out my track layout, so at least I'm not wasting track ( as of yet ).

I appreciated the use of the dollar bill for sizing. It's often hard to guess if a particular building will fit a certain area - the common size scale helps visualize the foot print.
This was always a problem for me, to judge size seeing these buildings. It helps I think. Thanks so much for the comments!

Hello again Rusty, thanks for the posts. Its actually my wife that is active army. We have moved several times however, I decided to settle down more so and buy a house I can set up shop in and possibly build a layout and tinker with a few of my other hobbies. The wife joined late after we raised our kids, she decided she wanted a career in the Military after 9/11. So here we are, I am retired and just play mostly but have been living on bases for the last 10-12 years and if you remember, they are very small. Hopefully now that I purchased another home I can get started on playing with some of my stuff again. Could be in a few months I might get to some more video's. We'll see how that goes, they take so much time to put together and that will take away from my play time.

Seagraver, I am so impaitient, I want to put one together so bad. I might have to do like a 6 foot operational job just to hold me over, I figure something like a 6x2 or 6x3 maybe. The itch is so strong! You know, that barn and shed were really easy to put together! If you like it might just give it a try. Its really a big barn though, its scale but large! :) I have a few Texas style buildings modeled after Texas buildings and I love them! Yeah, building structure kits is my way of holding me over until I can get started with the layout. I'm settled down and have a "bonus" room to build it in. The room isn't 100% for trains, but is large enough that half will be a very nice start. The room needs to be painted and carpeted before I start. That may happen in the spring of this year. I'm originally from Port Arthur. I served in the USCG for 12 years and ended up in Connecticut. I'm a firefighter now.
seagraver A Firefighter! thats crazy :) modeling is a great escape from it all I think. I have so many buildings now I gotta get that layout going! CG, thats good to! were you stationed in CT and just stayed there? my son did that to, USMC out of CA, now he lives there lol!
I was transferred to the USCG Academy in CT about 13 years ago. I served three years at the academy, then a year in Kuwait during OIF, then back to CT where I was stationed on the Eagle, and finally a small boat station in CT for three years before I got out.
You should take a look at the videos the British model railroaders do, or as the call them “model railways”. They are amazing craftsmen. You get a lot of in depth tutorials on building, weathering and how they fit into the layout.

Do you have a 1080 camera? I use those little handy cam by sony. They work great and are digital, no tapes. I use two of them for 2 angles and in editing I just pick the best view. The software, I just looked says its 79 for the ultimate. I actually created a video with the UA-cam Model Builders that was a getting started with Pinnacle Studio, I might see if I can find that for you. There are several video's on UA-cam to teach you how to use it, thats how I learndeded.

Hey Mike, Another source for square blocks like what you use is your local aluminum distributor or fabrication company. We have one here and I have picked up several blocks of metal (they sell it by the pound) and for 50 bucks I have maybe 10 blocks of several sizes. The blocks you use were just to costly for me. See if there is a fabrication company near you and all of the blocks I have are square.
Do you have these in video somewhere? I would like to see them. One of the things I like about these 1x2x3 blocks is the weight of them, they are really pretty heavy, how is it on the aluminum?
No, I don't have them on video. They are pretty heavy but they are aluminum but heavy enough to keep walls straight. I have 3 chunks of steel also if I need weight. My dad worked in the die room at Chrysler and brought home some maybe 50 years ago. I've got several sizes of blocks and one of my best is about 8" long and I use it to hold down switches and short track at times. I use it and if I feel I need more weight I add smaller blocks on to. Hello Espen, that model is actually called "HO KIT DPM The Other Corner Cafe". There is another building much like this that has the door on the other side called Carol's Cafe. Yes, the awnings were added seperately. I cannot find any more of these awnings either, I have been looking! If you find any, please let me know ok!
I saw a building that looked like the Town and Country Convenience store in Alabama a couple years ago.
its really cool to see some of these structures out in the real world, there are really a lot of them. I live in rural texas and drive through a lot of small towns and see all kinds of look alike buildings. I always want to take pictures but never do, I probably should I guess.

@@johnathanlewis2049 Yea, its amazing when you start working on models how you start noticing things in the real world. These buildings are everywhere, mostly it seems from the 50's and 70's. Not so many new style buildings really to speak of, or that I have seen. Of course I really like the DPM and Walthers models and I think most of them are modeled after the older buildings. Its really interesting to get into these rural towns and see the buildings that I think they are actually modeled after. Also, real world buildings were all created from plans to, so many were sold of the same building, I have seen so many buildings that look like the DPM models all over rural america. The Hubert model I created was a complete scratch build, Id I remember it was inspired by a house I had seen that was converted to a shop. Oh, and I see the ranch houses every where out here in Texas, I think these are also kinda 70's ish. Hey, Mr. Lewis, thanks for writing and sparking up some thought on these structures, its always fun to dig into some of this a bit deeper.

Sorry no vids, I'm using Microchip Controllers. I'm trying to learn Assembler, Hi-Tech C is just a trial version and I can't see spending 249 bucs on the full blown program. So I finally got all the files needed to get a good build and found a simple program to turn on a pin and blink that pin/LED. I'm into aircooled VW's too and would like to incorporate a controller in my Bus. Awe an adjustable wiper speed would be great to have. One day I will start on my layout. Thanks again Mike.

Hello RPM, I heard they were going to stop making the ol bus on Fox News just the other day :( This was a party bus when I was a kid. Also, the Hi-Tech C is free, you can use it for doing as much as we do with the free version, I have never paid for it either. I think the only advantage to having a payed for version is the file size of the produced code. It works great though and its pretty easy to use imo.
I agree with you on UA-cam layouts, there is a focus on the trains and not what details are on their layouts. I am always looking at backgrounds and I think "why did you put that there?" You seem to have a complicated lighting set up in your buildings, I must check out how you set it up. Anyway cheers for that, wife agrees with that good ol Texas flag...only hers is a good ol California flag. 👍
Hey Guy, thanks for the comments, sorry so long to get back to you. I do the same thing, even going as far as pausing video's sometimes to get a view of some of the structures and backgrounds. I think in truth my interest is not really so much the trains is it is the modeling of the surroundings, the smallness of it and the exactness. I tell my modeling friends that the trains are just part of my model and they dont know what in the world I mean by that, but they are really just part of the model for me. I enjoy the tiny little world I think. Might also let the wife know that the Texas flag is much better looking..... :) Take care and be well.
Hey Mike yes trains are part of the model not the model itself. I sell modeling as a way to create your own little world, something you have created. It's all about detail, little cameos blends a story so what story is one trying to tell? Oh my wife said a grizzly bear is better than a long horn, everyone loves a teddy bear. You need to go to "Railroad Line Forums", they love talking about structure building. Especially craftsman kits. You would prolly build excellent craftsman kits. More exspensive, but beautiful structures.

I am looking for video how modificate train platform from the building.I have H0 Kibri Bonn train station witch is 985mm long,but others platforms are 2000mm long.I am thinking to cut of building platforn on one side and build my own 2000m long as well.

Kitbashing is interesting cause it creates something entirely new other than theodel straight out of a box.

Never thought about it, I really cant right now though until I get my layout designed. Maybe after that! Its going to be a while though. Hello Dewane, my wife is the service member, or used to be. She is retired Army. We spent most of our time over seas, she was never stationed in the use in her entire career.

Practice! If you pick up Pinnacle Studio, I think V-21 just came out, its just a matter of learning the software and chopping up the video. You should try it if that kinda stuff interests you. Get a channel and get rolling! Just takes time to figure it out and learn what works for you.

I have have matchbox cars and idk what scale build work perfectly for them
Very close in size really. these models are 1/87, where your matchbox cars are 1/60-1/75.
