  • Anything to do with watering plants, especially succulents, is a bit of hot topic. People have different ways of doing things and no one way is good or bad.
But what works for one person may not work for another. And so in this video we will establish what should work for everyone based on research.
Watering leaves and/or roots can have advantages and disadvantages. We'll have a look at all of them.

Team roots because my water is so hard it leaves white deposits. I go through the trouble of bottom watering and have the table to deal with it, it's not an exact science though and can lead to a lot of problems.
Not sure I recommend this way, unless you micromanage everything like crazy, it's real hard to get an entire table to dry out before watering it again. They make enough flats and trays that would fit into a small tub on the ground, just fill the tray with plants, fill the tub with water, put the flats in, wait a few minutes, then pull them out
Helps a little bit, I still have to clean up some plants from mineral deposits, but I noticed as the plants grow and mature it seems to be less of an issue.

I love the comment section- what a good point! I didn't even think about hard water. That would definitely be a problem. Most of the growers here use rainwater stored in tanks so it's usually not a an issue. I have some 40k L storage which is tiny compared to some of the massive tanks i've seen at large nurseries. The only time i've noticed hard water deposits is when someone has dam water- i guess the rain picks up all those minerals then.
Using trays is a great idea. I also have a few for the plants that tend to play silly buggers when i water them overhead. But, as you say, it's very laborious 😅

@@SucculentGrowingTips I swore collecting rain water was illegal here, but I looked it up and it's not. Something to look forward to this winter.
Once I brought them inside, getting them onto a shelf with a long drip pan was the only thing I could think of. I thought it would be cool if I could add drip irrigation.... But the insanity of having 1000+ lines is obviously too much. I really do like the idea of automating this though. Especially when I look at some of the vertical farming operations, I often wonder if this could be easier.
Always great to hear from you.

I really dislike getting plants from growers with hard water marks on the leaves because you can’t get them off without disturbing the farina.

That is a good point! Hard water didn't even cross my mind as everyone i know, including myself, has huge water tank storage so most of the time we use rainwater, which is naturally soft, i think. But i can totally see how the white marks are annoying
